On DVD This Week. January 10th

I've been thinking about starting a weekly thread discussing the films released on dvd that week. Most movies don't have enough people interested to have a thread of their own but together I think they're worthy of discussion. I'll link the Internet Movie Database Listing and any other threads on TFP specifically about the films below their title. I'll also put up a poll to vote for the best dvd of the week.

The Constant Gardener
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387131/

The Transporter 2
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0388482/

Broken Flowers
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0412019/

Hustle and Flow
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0410097/

Red Eye
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0421239/

I've Seen Broken Flowers, The Transporter 2, and The Constant Gardener so far and all three were good for very different reasons.

The Constant gardener was very hard to watch. It was a very slow, very subtle, and the story was very deep. It required way to much thinking for 4am. The acting was great, the story was intriguing, and it tackled some very possible/real problems. Ralph Fiennes definitely deserved an oscar nomination..

The Transporter 2 was fun and required a whole lot less thinking than The Constant Gardener. The fight scenes were pretty well shot, unlike alot of action films(especially Michael Bay movies) the camera actually stayed focused long enough to see what was going on. I think they tried to humanize Jason Stathom's character a little more in this movie but they kept his badass attitude intact, I think that was probably pretty hard to accomplish. I liked it...

Broken Flowers with Bill Murray is an odd one... It's not laugh out loud funny, but I couldn't help but to keep a slight smile through the whole movie. This movie didn't get talked about a whole lot - I didn't even know about it until today, so I'll explain it alittle bit. Bill Murray is a womanizer who's girlfriend just left him. He get's an anonymous letter telling him he has a 19 year old son who just set out on a roadtrip to find him. He pretty much dismisses the letter but his friend encourages him to find out who sent the letter so he sets out on a road trip of his own to visit every woman(that he could think of) he slept with 20 years ago. I thought it was great, I love the idea of revisiting old lovers and seeing where they are now. He just see's a glimpse into the women's lives and it leaves alot unexplained but that's part of the fun.

The only one I saw was The Constant Gardener. I liked it, but I don't think I liked it as much as every else seemed to. The acting was excellent, but the story seemed to really drag or jump in several places. Hubby and I wanted to see Broken Flowers, so perhaps that will be what we rent for this weekend :)

I saw Red Eye. It was a very suspenseful thriller, and I enjoyed the fact that the female lead held her own against the villain, instead of just screaming a lot. She kicked some major ass. I think that's what made the key difference in this movie--that and Cillian Murphy makes one hell of a creepy villain!

BTW, I like this thread...it lets me know what else is coming out. I'm looking forward to renting the Constant Gardener.

I just watched redeye. I wasn't expecting they could make being in an airplane for over an hour enjoyable but the movie didn't drag much at all. She did kick some ass and she also didn't make alot of dumb mistakes like most victims in thriller movies. Yah she fell down, but she was running in heels. I think they did a good job isolating the character even though they were in the middle of a busy airplane.

I am also in favour of bringing this thread back!

I haven't seen any of those movies and that in part is why I want this thread to continue!
