The Italian Job...

Went to see the Italian Job last night. Did you ever go to the movies and watch a preview and think, jeez... it's showing all the best scenes and giving away the plot? Then you see the movie and realize that the preview barely scratched the surface of the movie. Well, in the case of the Italian Job, the preview did show all the best scenes and the entire plot. In fact, there's no real reason to see the movie if you've seen the preview. All the movie has is a bit more dialog connecting the action sequences. And most of the best dialog is also in the preview!

warrrreagl 06-03-2003 08:23 AM

I was going to see it today, but I may skip it now. Thanks.

diergray 06-03-2003 10:55 AM

I would see it at a matinee or rent it. It's not worth full price.

Porkchop 06-04-2003 12:24 AM

Disgrace this making a hash of it. Stick to the original.

BigBlueWrecking 06-04-2003 06:14 AM

I saw it and likes it, but I agree they showed WAY TOO MUCH in the previews. It would have been better had they not shown who turned and how they got him back for the most part. I thought the car scenes were cool, as was the tech stuff. Charlize is so freaking hot it makes anything worthwhile. Wish she got naked.

rogue49 06-04-2003 04:41 PM

I liked it...and I don't think they showed too much in the previews.

But then again, it was actually more subtle than I thought it would be,
and it has some nice dialog.
Kind of like Ocean's Eleven but with more cars chases.

Charlize Theron was a sweet bonus.

My thoughts exactly!

HockeyGuy 06-05-2003 03:26 PM

Havn't seen this one but really liked the original so i might take a pass.

wondash 06-06-2003 04:27 AM

I've heard a lot of people compare this movie to Oceans Eleven. The only similarity I can see is that they're both about a team of 'good guy' thieves. Anyway, last night I watched Oceans Eleven again and I think it's a much better movie.

I agree about Ocean's Eleven. Normally, I despise remakes on principle alone, but Ocean's Eleven is a top-quality remake. It would certainly stand as a very good movie even (especially?) if it were the original.

madsenj37 06-08-2003 03:08 AM

I thouroughly enjoyed this movie. Charlize Theron was very welcome bonus for me. The previews were a little spoiling but in the end, I was very satisfied as the credits rolled.

WhoaitsZ 06-08-2003 11:46 AM

Edward Norton was (and barely still is) my favorite actor of all time..... but some of his roles has me curious, including this one.

wow. a heist movie. with betrayal. wow! original!

VirFighter 06-08-2003 12:01 PM

I saw it today and I was a little let down. It was entertaining but Ed Norton's character was not given any depth at all. The man is a great actor (and one of my favorites) but he can't work with nothing.

Sparhawk 06-08-2003 12:41 PM

Norton was on contract and the studio made him do it, FYI. I think the movie would have been more interesting if Norton and Wahlberg switched characters. I wasn't terribly impressed with it though, a poor man's Ocean's 11.

holtmate 06-08-2003 03:39 PM

I liked the movie...the action was better than Ocean's 11, IMO. I loved the cars, too. Just a typical summer movie.

WhoaitsZ 06-08-2003 05:18 PM

ahh.... he had a contract? nice to know!

I really, really, REALLY don't want to see Ed start doing tons of movies just because he can.

i mean, if it makes him happy, he should do it but if sticks to his complex roles he'll live to be a legend.

sngx1275 06-08-2003 09:18 PM

He was a god in American History X.

The previews did give away a lot of the movie, but I still think its worth seeign if you don't pay more than $6.50 or so

Daval 06-09-2003 07:26 AM

I quite enjoyed the movie :)

Sparhawk 06-09-2003 08:14 AM

I forgot to say that the napster bit was very amusing, and thankfully not overdone.

teflonian 06-09-2003 02:52 PM

There were some enjoyable moments in the movie, but over all I felt that this movie exemplified the reason so many people are sick of hollywood. The plot was like a concession stand pretzel; a few twists and turns but you've consumed hundreds of them in the past that looked very similar. There were a few well delivered one liners and the Napster joke was actually sort of funny. The rest of it however left me unsatisfied... Maybe I needed some mustard.

warrrreagl 06-10-2003 05:51 AM

So I broke down and went to see it, and I had a great time. It was a thoroughly enjoyable movie.

I wonder if the approval rating for this movie among TFPers is age-based. It reminded me of movies from the 60's that had a lot of intrigue, but not a ton of action (just enough). Perhaps the younger crowd needs more explosions, bullets, boobies, and chases to hold their attention span....?

The negatives I heard in here were about how the plot was contrived and the acting sub-par. Sounds like first-year film students to me, so you might have a point there about the so-called age-gap. ;)

rainincarnate 06-11-2003 12:16 PM

I havent seen it (tempted cos of ed norton) but i heard it was set in america - how do they justify the title as the "italian" job if its not in italy anymore?

jmf1234 06-12-2003 06:21 PM

Yeah, That movie sucked so much balls. It was terrible.

I can't speak for the rest of the "Didn't like it" group, but I'm not all that young.

On a different note, I thought the blatant advertisement for the Mini Coopers was way too obvious, but now I've heard that the original also had a chase scene with Mini's. Anyone here seen the original? How is it?

The original gold heist which went awry was in Venice, and was henceforth referred to as "The Italian Job" for the remainder of the movie.

rainincarnate 06-13-2003 03:44 PM

Hmmm......that is such a tenuous title link - tell me the film still has minis in it though?

edited for spelling

a_divine_martyr 06-13-2003 09:28 PM

I liked it.

Although I'm part of the younger audience here.

I'm not some 15 year old who thinks Vin Diesel is the best actor ever (omg s0 hawt i want ur cok lolz~).

While I will agree, the original is better, I still think this one is worth the ticket price.

quest1mark 06-14-2003 10:31 PM

i heard they were going to make an oceans 11 2....can you believe that??!!?

Thats all it was!!!!!! 2 hours of Mini advertizing, other then that a complete let down

Maveric 06-17-2003 05:06 AM

i was going to see it because Jason Statham. He was in Lock Stock and Two smoking barrels (as Bacon) and starred in The Transporter (as Frank) both of which I thoroughly enjoyed. FYI, Jason was a world class olympic driver before he took up acting...

I finally got aroud to catching this flick ... I thought it was great :D I enjoyed Ed Norton, Jason Statham, Seth Green and the rest of the lot. This will be in my collection when it's release on DVD for sure.

There are some movies that you just can't recreate the original atmosphere and The Italian Job was always going to be one of those.
They were one a loser to nothing from the off.

I hate the way the hollywood has an obsession with remaking older films and marring the originals reputation.
Definitely stick to the original Italian Job, it has got one of the best endings ever!
I haven't seen it, but there is no way the new film can match that ending

Speed_Gibson 07-25-2003 01:57 AM

I watched this film without seeing any trace of a trailer and not even sure who starred in it - thoroughly enjoyed it, but never have seen any earlier versions of the film.

ChipX86 07-25-2003 02:55 PM

I too didn't see the previews, or even knew what it was about before watching it. I loved it, but from the comments in here, I'm going to have to watch the original now. However, I still plan on getting this one when it comes out. It was a good watch.

I can't believe they're doing Oceans 12, but I may just go and see that too. We'll see, though. Almost feels like it's kind of pushing it.

Same here. I enjoyed the movie, thought it was worth the full price I paid. Seth Greene stole the show.

BubblegumTeflon 08-03-2003 06:46 AM

The original movie has a "cameo" in this one, Ed's watching it on a big screen tv. Loved that.

ghostF98 08-07-2003 11:23 AM

Very good movie. I thoroughly surprised on how good it turned out, not that it looked bad in the previews, but I wasn't desperate to see this movie when I heard about it.
