Paths of Glory
I hope some (many?) of you have seen this movie. It is one of Stanley Kubrick's early works, and one of the best WW I movies yet made.
I think WW I is difficult for Americans (like myself) to fully grasp. We were only involved as a nation at the end. I don't think we normally appreciate that almost every European nation involved in it bled out a generation of men in the trenches of France. This movie, more than any other, reflects the madness of that war. |
Quite so. I think it is a great film, rivaling Strangelove for combining humour and horror in equal measure.
Not only this, but Kubrick stays true to the ruthless misanthropic tone right to the very end, gives us no respite, no hope and no redemption, which is exactly what it was for the people in what is probably the most ridiculous and needless conflict of this or any era. |
I have seen Paths. Very good movie. And it hightlights some of the insanities of war fare. I think Kubrick pulled this one off a lot better than Full Metal Jacket - though FMJ did have an amazing first half.

Certainly the best anti-war films ever made. One of Kubrick's best. I still remember being shocked by it when I first saw it many years ago. The fact that it was banned in France, Spain, and Israel for a long time only added to its reputation.

A great movie. I agree that it may be the best anti-war movies ever made. It may also be one of the best war movies ever made. For me, Paths of Glory and Dr. Strangelove are Kubrick's best.
