Best cameo appearances
In movies. Cameo can mean, in this case, a small role in a film played by a relatively big star.
Just to get the ball rolling... Hank Azaria - Along Came Polly Will Ferrell - Starsky And Hutch Tom Cruise, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey, Danny DeVito, Steven Spieldberg - Austin Powers In Goldmember Hank Azaria - Dodgeball Tim Robbins, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson - Anchorman Jason Statham - Collateral Cameron Diaz, Christina Ricci, Gary Busey, Flea, Tobey Maguire - Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas Flea - Back To The Future I and II Patrick Swayze - Donnie Darko (extended cameo?) David Hasselhoff - The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie Jason Biggs - Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back |
Also David Hasselhoff in "Dodgeball."
Neil Patrick Harris aka Doogie Howser in "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle." Awsome part! |
Bruce Campbell in both Spider-Man movies.
|
Arnold Schwartzeneggar in The Rundown, assumingly passing on the action movie torch to The Rock.
|
It's difficult in artistic endeavours to rate things objectively against one another, but if anyone can beat Sean Connery's cameo at the end of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, I'll eat my own head!
http://www.allstarz.org/~seanconnery/robinh01.jpg And don't say the movie sucked. That proves the point even further, because Connery's cameo is that much better because it elevated the end of a mediocre movie! |
Tom Cruise, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey, Danny DeVito, Steven Spieldberg - Austin Powers In Goldmember
I also liked that one. That was awesome. :) |
How about Lance Armstrong in Dodgeball?
For an obcusre one, marcel Marceau in Silent Movie. |

There were a whole slew of cameos in "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" back in the 60's. To name a few... Jack Benny, Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson, Jerry Lewis, Don Knotts, the Three Stooges, Buster Keaton, Sterling Holloway, Leo Gorcey, and Carl Reiner. There's plenty more, too. |
bob barker - happy gilmore

I laughed out loud when the camera slowly paned past Brad Pitt and Matt Damon to focus on the total dweeb doing all the talking and winning the heart of the girl during a taping of The Dating Game in “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind”.
|
Topher Grace in "Ocean's Eleven". Great little side scene!
|
Some great ones listed here, but there's one that's fresh in my mind.
David Bowie in Zoolander. |

Steve buscemi-pretty much anywhere....but awesome in Billy Madison
|
Hate to say it, but by my definition of "cameo", very few of the ones listed actually qualify. A cameo is a very small part (ie one scene, often not even speaking) that is usually uncredited.
For instance: Robin Williams as the mime instructor in "Shakes the Clown" Most Albert Hitchcock cameos (he would often just be in the background somewhere) Peter Jackson as a hobbit in Fellowship of the Ring. etc. |

I have to agree....this was the cameo of all cameos!!!!! |
The cameos in Anchorman were the best. That fight scene had me laughing harder than anything else.

Dana Carvey in This is Spinal Tap. This might not qualify, as I don't suspect he was famous at the time. Think of it as a retro-active cameo.

Dwight Yoakam in The Wedding Crashers. I didn't recognize him at first, since he wasn't wearing a cowboy hat :D

The examples given by everyone here seem to fit in with the ones given by lindalove, who started this thread. So please stop trying to tell everyone what your definition of a cameo is, and just join in the fun. If this topic doesn't cut it for you, there are plenty of alternatives on this board, one of which I'm sure would meet your standards.

ron jeremy in boondock saints

Stan Lee has some good cameos :)

I'm as entitled to my opinion as anyone else. If you don't like, YOU can go elsewhere. |

A cameo isn't really an integral part of the cast anyway, so he was right. Dictionary.com - A brief appearance of a prominent actor, as in a single scene of a motion picture. |
in kikilidstroms defense I think what they were getting out was the repeating of "his" definition and that the first time he said it was good enuff.
(and I cant find any definition that includes the fact that a cameo is uncredited, maybe Im just not looking in the right place) |
I enjoyed John McEnroe in Mr. Deebs.

He was a human from Bree. You can see him, ever so briefly, as the camera moves past him in the street as the hobbits arrive in Bree. |
a small theatrical role usually performed by a well-known actor and often limited to a single scene; broadly : any brief appearance ....from merriamwebster.com
I don't think it has to be uncredited, but I think they often are, such as John Malkovich's couple of scenes in "Alive". |

Don't know if it's truly considered a cameo, but Brad Pitt as the stoner roomate of michael rappaport in true romance.
|
That would qualify as a cameo...
|
Steve Buscemi in The Wedding Singer. He's hilarious.

Bob Saget in Halfbaked
Bob Saget - "I've sucked dick for coke" |
Chuck Norris in dodgeball
I honestly almost died laughing... i may have stopped breathing for a while Conan O'Brian was the source of the hilarity on that one |
Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright (Star and Director of Shawn of the Dead) in George A. Romero's 2005 Land of the Dead. Excellent cameo appearance!

Ben Stiller in Happy Gilmour would have to be one of my favourite cameos ever. |
I wouldn't call Buscemi or Schnieders rolls in ALL the Sandler movies cameos. They're part of his troupe now. For instance, in Mr. Deeds, Buscemi was in more than a couple of scenes. Billy Madison, that was a cameo. Schnieder too. When he's in there as supporting cast, not a cameo, ie Big Daddy. The Longest Yard, Sandler's regular troupe wasn't in there. When I saw Schnieder, I was surprised. That was a cameo.
The best kind of cameos are the ones like Pitt and Damon in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, or Sarah Michelle Gellar in She's All That. No lines, just the nod of a head. Sometimes they get annoying, like the old-tv-show-to-movie movies, that have the original cast members showing up for some stupid reason, Starsky and Hutch having the worst one. I didn't have to watch SWAT on TV, or know the actors, to pick out the cameos. |
