Best cameo appearances

In movies. Cameo can mean, in this case, a small role in a film played by a relatively big star.

Just to get the ball rolling...

Hank Azaria - Along Came Polly
Will Ferrell - Starsky And Hutch
Tom Cruise, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey, Danny DeVito, Steven Spieldberg - Austin Powers In Goldmember
Hank Azaria - Dodgeball
Tim Robbins, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson - Anchorman
Jason Statham - Collateral
Cameron Diaz, Christina Ricci, Gary Busey, Flea, Tobey Maguire - Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
Flea - Back To The Future I and II
Patrick Swayze - Donnie Darko (extended cameo?)
David Hasselhoff - The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie
Jason Biggs - Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back

Johnny Pyro 09-09-2005 10:37 PM

Also David Hasselhoff in "Dodgeball."

Neil Patrick Harris aka Doogie Howser in "Harold and Kumar go to White Castle." Awsome part!

El Pollo 09-10-2005 12:39 AM

Bruce Campbell in both Spider-Man movies.

Nikilidstrom 09-10-2005 08:45 AM

Arnold Schwartzeneggar in The Rundown, assumingly passing on the action movie torch to The Rock.

aberkok 09-10-2005 08:54 AM

It's difficult in artistic endeavours to rate things objectively against one another, but if anyone can beat Sean Connery's cameo at the end of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, I'll eat my own head!
http://www.allstarz.org/~seanconnery/robinh01.jpg
And don't say the movie sucked. That proves the point even further, because Connery's cameo is that much better because it elevated the end of a mediocre movie!

zVp 09-10-2005 09:09 AM

Tom Cruise, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey, Danny DeVito, Steven Spieldberg - Austin Powers In Goldmember

I also liked that one. That was awesome. :)

spongy 09-10-2005 09:26 AM

How about Lance Armstrong in Dodgeball?
For an obcusre one, marcel Marceau in Silent Movie.

Lee Trevino - "Happy Gilmore"
Patrick Stewart - "Robin Hood: Men in Tights"
Mel Brooks - "Spaceballs"

There were a whole slew of cameos in "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" back in the 60's.
To name a few...
Jack Benny, Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson, Jerry Lewis, Don Knotts, the Three Stooges, Buster Keaton, Sterling Holloway, Leo Gorcey, and Carl Reiner.
There's plenty more, too.

irateplatypus 09-10-2005 06:01 PM

bob barker - happy gilmore

micah67 09-10-2005 08:24 PM

I laughed out loud when the camera slowly paned past Brad Pitt and Matt Damon to focus on the total dweeb doing all the talking and winning the heart of the girl during a taping of The Dating Game in “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind”.

ColonelSpecial 09-10-2005 10:14 PM

Topher Grace in "Ocean's Eleven". Great little side scene!

FngKestrel 09-10-2005 11:19 PM

Some great ones listed here, but there's one that's fresh in my mind.

David Bowie in Zoolander.

Matt Damon in Eurotrip. Although it's a stupid teen flick, I loved it; it had some funny parts in it.

Yeah, I can't wait to see what bit part he gets in Spider-Man 3.

spectre 09-11-2005 04:43 PM

Ozzy Osbourne in Little Nicky and Lemmy Killmeister in Airheads.

Xiangsu 09-11-2005 06:07 PM

Charlton Heston in Wayne's world 2 was always a good one.

rob schnieder in any adam sandler movie... and visa versa.

Steve buscemi-pretty much anywhere....but awesome in Billy Madison

Derwood 09-12-2005 07:09 AM

Hate to say it, but by my definition of "cameo", very few of the ones listed actually qualify. A cameo is a very small part (ie one scene, often not even speaking) that is usually uncredited.

For instance:

Robin Williams as the mime instructor in "Shakes the Clown"
Most Albert Hitchcock cameos (he would often just be in the background somewhere)
Peter Jackson as a hobbit in Fellowship of the Ring.

etc.

I have to agree....this was the cameo of all cameos!!!!!

God of Thunder 09-12-2005 07:41 AM

The cameos in Anchorman were the best. That fight scene had me laughing harder than anything else.

Quote:

Ron Burgundy: Boy, that escalated quickly... I mean, that really got out of hand fast!
Champ Kind: It jumped up a notch!
Ron Burgundy: It did, didn't it?
Brick Tamland: Yeah, I stabbed a man in the heart!
Ron Burgundy: I saw that! Brick killed a guy! Did you throw a trident?
Brick Tamland: Yeah, there were horses, and a man on fire, and I killed a guy with a trident!
Ron Burgundy: Brick, I've been meaning to talk to you about that. You should find yourself a safehouse or a relative close by. Lay low for a while, because you're probably wanted for murder
One of my other favorites is Jay & Silent Bob showing up in Scream 3.

aberkok 09-12-2005 08:20 AM

Dana Carvey in This is Spinal Tap. This might not qualify, as I don't suspect he was famous at the time. Think of it as a retro-active cameo.

No, but Billy Crystal was in there too.

Dwight Yoakam in The Wedding Crashers. I didn't recognize him at first, since he wasn't wearing a cowboy hat :D

Yes, but again, I wouldn't call Schaffer's role a "cameo". He was in more than one scene and had a good deal of dialogue. To me, a cameo is very brief and usually uncredited. The opening scene to Goldmember is what I'm talking about.

Nikilidstrom 09-17-2005 06:55 AM

The examples given by everyone here seem to fit in with the ones given by lindalove, who started this thread. So please stop trying to tell everyone what your definition of a cameo is, and just join in the fun. If this topic doesn't cut it for you, there are plenty of alternatives on this board, one of which I'm sure would meet your standards.

JStrider 09-17-2005 07:53 AM

ron jeremy in boondock saints

Reese 09-20-2005 06:06 AM

Stan Lee has some good cameos :)

(Rude Comment Removed) People, you can disagree without being rude. -lebell

I'm as entitled to my opinion as anyone else. If you don't like, YOU can go elsewhere.

While I believe that rude comment edited out is the wrong choice of words on this board, Derwood wasn't trying to impose his definition on anyone else. Besides, I think a little discussion of what a cameo appearance is fits well into this thread.

A cameo isn't really an integral part of the cast anyway, so he was right.

Dictionary.com - A brief appearance of a prominent actor, as in a single scene of a motion picture.

ShaniFaye 09-20-2005 09:20 AM

in kikilidstroms defense I think what they were getting out was the repeating of "his" definition and that the first time he said it was good enuff.

(and I cant find any definition that includes the fact that a cameo is uncredited, maybe Im just not looking in the right place)

fightnight 09-20-2005 09:29 AM

I enjoyed John McEnroe in Mr. Deebs.

Peter Jackson didn't play a hobbit in Fellowship of the Ring.

He was a human from Bree. You can see him, ever so briefly, as the camera moves past him in the street as the hobbits arrive in Bree.

Grasshopper Green 09-20-2005 05:04 PM

a small theatrical role usually performed by a well-known actor and often limited to a single scene; broadly : any brief appearance ....from merriamwebster.com

I don't think it has to be uncredited, but I think they often are, such as John Malkovich's couple of scenes in "Alive".

You are correct, thanks. I guess I remembered incorrectly because he looks so much like a Hobbit in real life! ( I remembered him being in Bree though)

Ganggreen 09-20-2005 06:31 PM

Don't know if it's truly considered a cameo, but Brad Pitt as the stoner roomate of michael rappaport in true romance.

Charlatan 09-20-2005 07:15 PM

That would qualify as a cameo...

Grasshopper Green 10-15-2005 07:05 PM

Steve Buscemi in The Wedding Singer. He's hilarious.

RogueHunter65 10-16-2005 06:46 PM

Bob Saget in Halfbaked

Bob Saget - "I've sucked dick for coke"

Ace_O_Spades 10-17-2005 11:20 PM

Chuck Norris in dodgeball

I honestly almost died laughing... i may have stopped breathing for a while

Conan O'Brian was the source of the hilarity on that one

Vales419 10-25-2005 12:16 PM

Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright (Star and Director of Shawn of the Dead) in George A. Romero's 2005 Land of the Dead. Excellent cameo appearance!

Peace.

I wouldn't call Buscemi or Schnieders rolls in ALL the Sandler movies cameos. They're part of his troupe now. For instance, in Mr. Deeds, Buscemi was in more than a couple of scenes. Billy Madison, that was a cameo. Schnieder too. When he's in there as supporting cast, not a cameo, ie Big Daddy. The Longest Yard, Sandler's regular troupe wasn't in there. When I saw Schnieder, I was surprised. That was a cameo.

The best kind of cameos are the ones like Pitt and Damon in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, or Sarah Michelle Gellar in She's All That. No lines, just the nod of a head.
Sometimes they get annoying, like the old-tv-show-to-movie movies, that have the original cast members showing up for some stupid reason, Starsky and Hutch having the worst one. I didn't have to watch SWAT on TV, or know the actors, to pick out the cameos.
