Most folks used to the Hollywood-style of directing might get thrown by the slow expositional pace at the beginning. But if you relax and watch uninterrupted from beginning to end (best in a theater) the 3 and a half hours just flies by. If you expect an obvious singular dramatic arc punctuated by emotional cues from the musical score you'll probably be somewhat disoriented.

And the editing is very economic. There is hardly a wasted moment. The pace of events is actually quite rapid and a lot of story is told in a small amount of time .... and since this is a 3 and a half hour film it plays out like a grand epic (which it is).

For me the measure of a great film is one that you can, on subsequent viewings, find new things, understand relationships better or just enjoy from a visceral or emotional level as much as the first time .... Seven Samurai works for me. So does Casablanca and It's a Wonderful Life.

But if you didn't get into the characters, stories or exposition the first time then I probably can't change your mind. Maybe it's a "guy" thing.

Maybe all that is in there, but when you can't get past the horrible acting, terrible music, shoddy editing, glacier-eque pace and overwhelming ennui, well....

D.W. Griffiths best work. The film was commisioned to induce the United States into WWI. The U.S. entered the war, however, before the film was completed, so he used actual combat footage. Besides...Lillian Gish was just freakin' adorable.

Casablanca, 1942
Need I explain? Arguably Bogart's best work...unless, of course, you're a Philip Marlowe fan.

Toss up between
The Postman, 1997 and The Patriot, 2000
I'm not a big fan of either Kevin Costner or, Mel Gibson, but both gave excellent performaces in their respective roles.

For Sheer fun;
Cutthroat Island, 1995
The absolute best part being when Gena Davis, presumably beaten and about to be killed by Captain Dog Brown, uncovers a 12 pound cannon aimed directly at him, glares at him, growls; "Bad Dog", lights the fuse and blows him out the back of the ship. Freakin' hilarious. I love it.

I don't know if I posted here before and I'm sort of lazy today so I'm not going to check.

Picking only 3 movies is hard and might change with my mood, but I'm going to pick:

1) Swimming Pool: I love the actresses in this movie and the premise is interesting. Still debating on what actually occurs in the movie after many viewings.

2) The Good Girl: Jennifer Aniston is one of my favorite actresses and in this movie she's different from any other role I've seen her in. Plus, it has Jake Gyllenhaal and John C. Reilly in it. I like the transformation of the characters and the mix of comedy and drama.

3) Dial M for Murder: This is my favorite Alred Hitchcock movie. It has Grace Kelly, who is tied with Audrey Hepburn as my favorite woman of all time. I like that it is a simple movie, well as simple as Hitchcock can get. It's a good movie to curl up to on a lazy afternoon.

My favorite movies are different from movies that I consider the "Best Movies"

Favorites
Le Samourai: If you like The Professional, especially the lone assassin with no life aspect, watch Le Samourai. It's great. I see a lot of other thrillers that seem to take a lot from it.
Groundhog Day: Probably my favorite Bill Murray movie. It's so much fun.
North By Northwest: I had to choose something from Hitchcock. I can't get enough Hitchcock, including the movies he made before he moved to the US.

Terminator 2 Is my ultimate favorite movie.
Office Space is my favorite Comedy.

pulp fiction, fight club, lock stock action comedy.
casino, goodfellas, godfather2 mafia/gangster.
Toystory(1&2), Spirited away, Iron Giant Animated movies.

and even now, i'm not sure this is a final list. It changes too much.

I grew up on the Donner vision of Superman. I was my life from the age of like 2 or 3 until I moved away from my first home. Superman Returns was, in my opinion, a wonderful continuation in that legacy. Singer channeled Donner in a way I couldn't have hoped for. I know it was hokey and there were some awkward parts, but that's a part of what it is.

The Boondock Saints
Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers
Black Hawk Down

Honorable mention: I could have replaced any of those three with The Searchers and not felt bad about it.

then either Blade Runner or The Princess Bride. They rate #3 and #4. Basically they flip depending if I'm in a jovial mood or depressed.

If you see it without any kind of hype and no possible spoilers or anything like that, then it's awesome. I saw it on tmn 1 year after it came out so i had no fucking clue what to expect apart from being about a fight club.

The movie itself is really well done and i love edward norton and brad pitt as a pair. 9/10

Shawshank Redemption - I read and quite liked the short story first, the movie really lived up to my expectations.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - just the music and the theme, I would watch it anytime just for that.

Batman Begins- I'm a massive Batman fan and I can't get enough of this movie, The Dark Knight however looks like it'll surpass this one.

Hellraiser- One amazing movie. While HR2 is a better movie overall IMO, it wouldn't exist without the first one so I barely place this one before HR2.

Transformers: The Movie (1986) - I have seen this movie over 200 times, literally. It was my favorite movie as a kid and it still is my favorite movie.

Izathatch Upright Location: MAB, Japan	Batman Begins- I'm a massive Batman fan and I can't get enough of this movie, The Dark Knight however looks like it'll surpass this one. Hellraiser- One amazing movie. While HR2 is a better movie overall IMO, it wouldn't exist without the first one so I barely place this one before HR2. Transformers: The Movie (1986) - I have seen this movie over 200 times, literally. It was my favorite movie as a kid and it still is my favorite movie. __________________ I am Vengeance...
