The Ring...definitely...

I was not impressed by Ringu. I know that it was the original and all, but the shock value and believability (if that's possible) was definitely present in The Ring. Also, did you see the victim's faces in Ringu??? There was nothng terrifing about that. The faces, the sets, the whole atmosphere was alot more creepy in The Ring.

Definitely...The Ring was better...

Ringu was far superior, The Ring changed far too many sections of the plot and mythology, albeit The Ring was an excellent movie it still wasn't (in my books) up to the standard of the original Ringu.

Ringu's budget was most likely shoe-string, whereas The Ring was probably 20x the originals amount.

p.s. Naomi Watts is damn hot (someone had to say it and I'm glad it was me)

Ok so I finally saw Ringu. and the main thing about it was that it was just plainer. I think Ringu was more believable out of the two, It was just a lot more simple and made more sense. Where as The Ring added a lot of new ideas to the plot, and kind of got you confused in a way. In my opinion it just seemed like The Ring was the "Hollywood" version of a simple japanese horror movie.

This was such a great thing to say because I think it explains the whole difference between the two movies.

So I can't say which one I liked better. I think I would have to go with the "flashy" Ring. I think I make this decision after comparing my favorite part in both movies... the end where she comes out of the tv. It was just so much more creepy in The Ring. The way that they made her look like she was still part of the tv when she was walking around looked great!

I have seen both movies twice. And, although I saw the remake first, I like Ringu more for a few reasons:

1. Sadako is so much creepier than Samara. Everytime I watch Sadako's walk, I get little shivers up and down my spine. Whereas, after the initial shock of seeing Samara coming out of the TV, I didn't really find it very creepy, scary, or otherwise. Not to mention the fact that, except for the EYE, you NEVER see sadako's face. It's always covered by her hair. In fact, you rarely even see Sadako in the movie at all. A brilliant move, as this intensifies an already creepy character. Whereas with samara, you see her countless times, and she's just not as scary.

2. Atmosphere in Ringu really made it much creepier.

3. I found Asakawa and Ryuji to be much more interesting characters than Rachel and Noah.

4. Yoichi wasn't a "Sixth Sense" ripoff kid. :P

Not to say The Ring isnt a good movie, because it is, it's just that it's not nearly as good as Ringu. (but few things are)

THANK YOU! That's too funny, I thought I was the only one that thought that. I think the kid in the ring was too creepy. But Yoichi was so cute!!!

see, my biggest problem with the ring, is that the "cursed" video is to "hollywood" not beleivable at all... its too.... clean looking, not gritty at all. The original movie kept it simple, and really amateur looking which added to the effect. Sometime a little goes a long way.... thats another reason i liked Ringu better....

Definately Ringu.

I think what made Ringu such a fantastic film is that while you're watching it, you really believe it! That is what made it so scary, it made you believe something totally irational (watch this video and you die). Without that power of making you believe, the film is nothing. Unfortunatly The Ring, for me at least, failed to convince.

I also much prefer the mythology behind Ringu. The story of The Ring seemed al over the place...horses etc...

Also in Ringu, nothing supernatural ever appears to happen. Apart from the fact that after 7 days of watching this video, your heart just....stops...perhaps their is a rational explaination for all this? This added to the realism. In The Ring we have screws undoing themselves, boulders moving, flys coming our of the tv (foreshadowing the imfamous crawling out of the tv scene).

Had I not seen Ringu, I would have enjoyed The Ring...and then forgotten about it. Ringu for me remains an incredibly memorable and shocking film.

I actually found the victims faces more scary in Ringu. No makeup required, just a look of sheer gutwrenching shock.

Also, for some strange reason I found the video in Ringu kinda evocative of WWII and the Hiroshima bomb (particulary because of the name Sadako too) - the video just felt nicely aged and real, like it was very old stock footage or something.

Watching the horse go nuts in the Ring was good, but eventually even the horse theme felt overused.

I'm not taking anything away from the Ring being a good movie - they were both impressive.

Yes..they were both impressive, but you have to really see Ringu 1,2 and 0 to see the whole story. "The Ring" took bits from each movie and condensed it into a modern suspense horror flick. I like Ringu better though. It felt more realistic and gritty. Plus the acting was a heck of a lot better in the japanese versions.

I've only seen Ringu, based on that I won't see the Ring.

I had originally heard that Ringu was much scarier than the Ring so I went in with high expectations and was completely let down.

Ringu, hands down.

Most Japanese horrorfilms have good psychological backgrounds to them. The "monster" usually becomes both tragic and frightening.

In "The Ring", some producer must have gone: "No! I want the little girl to be all evil, like, RAHR, kinda like Chucky! And then we put loud noises in it, because that's what good horror is all about! Where's my lunch? Hey, can we make the girl a terrorist in the sequel?!! I hear that sorta stuff is pretty big nowadays."

Sorry about the mini-rant.

Ringu, in it's original version. Way better. I said it before, people in japan are taking the horror business to a next level . If you liked Ringu, i sugges Uzumaki, Hypnosis and The Cure.

I saw the ring first, then saw ringu, mostly because i couldnt find ringu before the remake came out. After seeing both, its hard to say which one was better. Ringu drew me into the story more, where the Ring was flashier and, as bondagegirl said, more "Hollywood". Id say their both good... just need to sit down and watch ringu 2 now.

When I saw "The Ring", I was very disappointed in the fact that the movie wasn't that scary at all.

The special effects, especially where she came out of the TV was cool, but not scary.

Ok how the hell did Ringu have less suspense?
The whole film was built on suspense. The Ring relied alot on "looking good" in order to draw you in.
That's Hollywood for you, they should leave well enough alone.
Another thing, there is no actual physical ring ffs. In the ring that symbolised it twice, the top of the well and they flashed a ring on the screen.
GAH HOLLYWOOD FUCK OFF.

As for Japanese culture translating I guess it depends on what you are into. I mean, if you've never seen anime or other Japanese films before then it may not. Personally I didnt even notice.
