I have to disagree with you there. i believe that star wars is a cult classic even though it was a huge hit. people are so into that movie that they worship that movie. thus a cult phenomena. they know random extreme minor charachters (the third storm trooper in the left in the 5th row behind the space ship his name is Joe).

ok here is another one, BIg Troble in little china. Kurt Russel stars in the John Carpenter movie.

would the toxic avenger be considered a cult classic? i liked the unrated version when i was young... my evil side really liked when they ran over that little bike-riding kid. 'specially when they backed over his head... pretty disturbing but i turned out ok!

Sergio Leone's "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" would be my favourite "cult" classic. It all went downhill for Clint Eastwood from there.

On second thought, "Pulp Fiction" also belongs to this categoy, I guess. I am surprised no one mentioned that one yet. It all went downhill for John Travolta from there. Again.

edit: Concerning the argument what "cult"-movies actually are, i'd like to add that some of you seem to mix up 'cult' and 'trash', no?

A 'cult' classic is a movie that essentially got hammered by critics/politics/media and was conversely popularized by the anti-culture. Some movies that people are mentioning are drawing questions of "What the heck is that movie?" - why? Because it's obviously either not cult or classic enough.

Rocky Horror Picture Show
Howard The Duck
Evil Dead
Spaceballs

...those are cult classics.

Boondock Saints is becoming one as well.

Ring is the Japanese version, "The" Ring is the crappy American version.
Already is a bit of a cult classic, after the American remake a lot more people will be aware of it.

While it's not my favorite, Phantom of the Paradise is an AWESOME cult classic. It's got a little bit of everything in it, and the guy who plays "Swan" is a freak! Plus, it was directed by Brian de Palma (of Scarface fame)! Good stuff.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a good one, Boondock Saints is a great movie... and I don't know if these are considered classics let alone cult classics, but I have to say Goonies, Barry Gordy's Last Dragon, and Leon, The Professional.
