I have to disagree with you there. i believe that star wars is a cult classic even though it was a huge hit. people are so into that movie that they worship that movie. thus a cult phenomena. they know random extreme minor charachters (the third storm trooper in the left in the 5th row behind the space ship his name is Joe).

ok here is another one, BIg Troble in little china. Kurt Russel stars in the John Carpenter movie.

John Carpenter one the best B rated movie directors of today.

Midlandmadman 05-28-2003 11:56 AM

john carpenter makes me think of another great one
THE THING!

clues_blues 05-28-2003 12:08 PM

would the toxic avenger be considered a cult classic? i liked the unrated version when i was young... my evil side really liked when they ran over that little bike-riding kid. 'specially when they backed over his head... pretty disturbing but i turned out ok!

Sergio Leone's "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" would be my favourite "cult" classic. It all went downhill for Clint Eastwood from there.

On second thought, "Pulp Fiction" also belongs to this categoy, I guess. I am surprised no one mentioned that one yet. It all went downhill for John Travolta from there. Again.

edit: Concerning the argument what "cult"-movies actually are, i'd like to add that some of you seem to mix up 'cult' and 'trash', no?

hughjarse 05-29-2003 04:39 AM

Up in Smoke.

Thats where my money goes.

denim 05-29-2003 11:51 AM

The Wizard of Speed and Time is soooo "cult" that the cultists made and circulate their own DVD of it, with the film maker's blessing!

/me has one

3leggedfrog 05-29-2003 12:12 PM

what about the wizzard of oz that michael jackson did.

hes weird enough for a cult but i am not sure if the movie is. lol

Halx 05-29-2003 01:31 PM

*smacks 3leggedfrog upside the head*

A 'cult' classic is a movie that essentially got hammered by critics/politics/media and was conversely popularized by the anti-culture. Some movies that people are mentioning are drawing questions of "What the heck is that movie?" - why? Because it's obviously either not cult or classic enough.

Rocky Horror Picture Show
Howard The Duck
Evil Dead
Spaceballs

...those are cult classics.

Boondock Saints is becoming one as well.

dankitti 05-29-2003 02:51 PM

Santa Claus Conquers The Martians. and, um, rocky horror picture show. and the original House On Haunted Hill with vincent price.

3leggedfrog 05-29-2003 02:54 PM

In no particular order... (i couldn't narrow it down to one)

The Holy Grail
The Princess Bride
Men In Tights
Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes

and wouldn't have thought of it as a "cult classic" but i second whoever said Willie Wonka and The Chocolate Factory... :D

~springrain 05-29-2003 05:21 PM

Willow adds...

2001 Space Odyssey
Clockwork Orange

Some real good ones here. I don't know if this counts as a cult, but "Hell comes to Frog Town" with Rowdy Rodney Piper is one I always look for.

"Alright, let's go!"</a>

Transformers, gotta love Orson Wells and Leonard Nimoy together bringing on the Decepticons!

but the japanese version is soo much better. is this going to be a cult classic do you think?

Eiresol 06-09-2003 12:56 PM

Ring is the Japanese version, "The" Ring is the crappy American version.
Already is a bit of a cult classic, after the American remake a lot more people will be aware of it.

Future cult classic - Dog Soldiers
"There is no spoon" ha classic line.

Roark 06-09-2003 01:28 PM

Howard the Duck and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

livewirerc 06-10-2003 06:37 PM

While it's not my favorite, Phantom of the Paradise is an AWESOME cult classic. It's got a little bit of everything in it, and the guy who plays "Swan" is a freak! Plus, it was directed by Brian de Palma (of Scarface fame)! Good stuff.

Sparhawk 06-10-2003 06:46 PM

Save Ferris!

paddyjoe 06-10-2003 07:06 PM

Check this one out sometime. Get your head right first.

bob32 06-11-2003 11:54 AM

Assuming these are counted as cult movies (I believe they are), my favorites are Animal House and Mallrats

DHS 06-12-2003 06:55 PM

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a good one, Boondock Saints is a great movie... and I don't know if these are considered classics let alone cult classics, but I have to say Goonies, Barry Gordy's Last Dragon, and Leon, The Professional.

bigdub 06-13-2003 04:54 PM

Army of Darkness, Barbarella, Kentucky Fried Movie, and Amazon Women on the Moon

Lastly: Better off Dead
