joss whedon

I knew whedon had some big productions to his name (i.e. buffy and angel, who amazing shows) but it was news to me he also did firefly (which i thought looked really interesting when it was first on TV but never actually watched), toy story (in some form or another), and TITAN A.E.

what else has whedon done? i'm really blown away by the magnitude of his talents. buffy and angel were both awesome shows, but TITAN A.E. was a very entertaining movie, and i hear firefly was almost at the level of farscape-greatness.

IMDb is your friend.

Depends on how you look at it - from a production values standpoint Firefly completely blows away Farscape, it was a highly stylized show that looked (and "felt") absolutely incredible with virtually no "cheese" (a rare achievement for a sci-fi show).

Thematically, Firefly, while very interesting, took great pains to ground itself in it's own diegetic (there's a vocab word for you) reality, with much emphasis on continuity and internal coherence. Farscape on the other hand, seemed to have taken up a one-show genre-busting crusade, consciously trying to get away from what's come to be expected of sci-fi shows (one great example of this is their lack of preachy morality plays that the star-treks and the star-gates are riddled with). Sometimes this worked, sometimes it didn't, but when it did, damn it was good. Firefly was just more consistently "good".

So I couldn't call one or the other "better", they are just different enough not to do that. Just my personal impression, of course.

I was reading through his IMDB biography yesterday. Looks like writing is in his blood. His grandfather wrote for Leave it to Beaver and other classic shows and his father wrote for Golden Girls and a few other well known shows.

I didn't know that... it explains a lot.

He is also writing a damn good run of astonishing x-men right now.

Joss Whedon...is awesome :D

He also wrote the original Buffy movie, but so many things were changed, it came out completely different from how he wrote it (apparently Donald Sutherland changed pretty much ALL his lines)

I was never a big fan of Buffy or Angel, but I really dig Firefly. As a matter of fact, I just got it for Christmas. Think I'll go watch it.
