Manga Recommendations (Not Anime)
Yo folks!
I like Japanese comics but have a hard time finding good ones. Truthfully, I love comedy series more than action stuff. My favorites are: Love Hina Ranma 1/2 Ai Yori Aoshi Kare Kano (recomended to me by a TFP poster) Aria Maison Ikkoku Negima (even though it's nowhere as good as Love Hina) I grew up a Rumiko Takahashi fan so I unfortunately got stuck loving this lovey dovey type stuff. But f*ck it, I like it and I'm proud. I'm interested in Rouroni Kenshin and a series called Dears thats coming out but I wonder if I am missing a classic from my collection of this type of manga genre. (For action comics, I prefer American comics. For anime, I like action stuff like Cowboy Bebop, and the ROD OVA and well done stuff based off my manga I listed above.) So any ideas?! Thanks TFP!

Although I haven't read too many series, I can say Berserk is amazing. The Dark Horse release could probably be a little better, but there are usually accurate translations at Skullknight.net (it's also a good resource in general).

I would highly recoomene BUYING your manga; Good series wont come out in the states unless there seems to be a market for them. With most series made after 1995 being picked up by VIZ, Tokyopop, Darkhorse, et al. there is bound to be something that interests you comming out every month.
For Manga Sources, I usually just check out http://www.animenfo.com and see how the anime is, then look on ANN to see if the manga is comming out soon. Right Stuf's website is awesome for manga reviews and release dates, plus they often have GREAT sales. Off the top of my head here are some good titles i've read lately that you might like: XXXHolic is good and ties in with Tsubasa and Negima Saikoano Now (Korean Manwha) Hana Kimi Girl got Game Boys Be Gravitation Clover I.N.V.U. Peach Girl Snow Drop Actually.. almost 99% of the CLAMP titles should be right up your alley. My girlfriend is the manga nut, im the anime collector.. Together we have been know to keep several storeshelves bare. ![]() Last edited by Ganguro; 12-26-2004 at 07:07 PM.. |

I actually prefer fansubbed mangas or the originals. I have found the mangas released by american companies to be not of good quality. The original illustrations are stretched and not as sharp as they were originally printed.

thanks folks, i do actually "buy" my manga because i read it on my train ride to work and pumps me up creatively to do work. so thank god for viz and tokyo pop these last few years.
i might check out xxxholic and tsubasa. i generally actually do not love clamp. it's weird for me because i walk the line between girls manga almost but i dont love it if it is super girly. i think Love Hina is the absolute best example. kind of love-angsty - but at the same time it's very T&A from a male perspective. i have read some "girl got game" from a friend and it's good but i would not buy it. thanks ganguro for that list...

Surprised no one mentioned "Onegai Teacher" yet. Just read it, very good.

Having said that, if you do like this series, you might also like Naruto and One Piece. While their subject matter differs wildly, their story structure is very similar... |

Midori has been my favorite manga for a while. It's not your "action packed" type you might be used to, but it's hilarious and always makes me laugh. I used to have a link where you could download each issue, but I sadly lost it. Good thing I saved most of them. Check it out!

The problem with a lot of reccomendations in this thread is that people arent familiar with the series named, or simply dont get what kind of manga he/she's into.
It's unlikely that the thread started would be interested in Cowboy Bebop based on the titles listed. ARe you just a fan of drama comedies, or more of a Bishie fan? I think Yumeria would be a good manga to check out. Also check out Da Capo, and Popotan. While i havent read the manga for Green Green, it has a very strong Love Hina feel to it, but with a bit more fanservice.. Has any of these replies helped you so far? |

yes it has, thanks!
i mean, the ones that become read over and over are more of the dramadies. I am not sure what "Bishie" is but if it's like girl's shojo... then not exactly. i need to look into: xxxholic tsubasa and some others but the problem is, some of these look hard to find. One of my necessities is that they need to be printed and sold somewhere like the internet or comic shop. (in other words, i prefer if tokyopop or viz or del rey printed it). especially the ones (ganguro) mentioned. i have never seen them on the shelves. is there a way to buy these somewhere on the net?

You can usually buy manga from any otaku biz site, but I dont like to take my chances over the internet. I have found that large retailers have a somewhat decent selection and usually free shipping.
http://www.rightstuf.com/ http://www.amazon.com http://www.barnesandnoble.com/ http://www.animenation.com If you buy from rightstuf, it might be good to join their member program.. you get some really good deals that way. |
