Firefly

Never got to see the series when it was on TV - but just watched the whole thing on DVD with my roomate. I just about cried when Irealized what a work of art Fox had canceled. Does anyone know the reasons? What will the movie (serenity) be like? Does anyone know why Jane is named Jane?

Probably for poor ratings, the advertising was all wrong and they played the episodes in a poorly thought out order. They are bringing back Family Guy due to it's great success. If this movie, that I was previously unaware of, does very well, maybe...

Firefly is absolutely amazing. I didn't care for it much while it was on tv. It's definately not a show that should be played out of order and in the first time slot of the evening. Luckily, my wife loved it enough to want the dvds, and after I saw them in order, I was blown away. My other favorite being Farscape, I'm lucky in that they're so very different I don't need to worry about being forced to choose :D.

On Serenity: I don't see it being huge enough to warrent a return to the small screen, but if they don't screw over the adverts and such for the movie, then I think it will do numbers profitable enough to warrent a sequel, if Wheadon and the cast want to return. I can't find the numbers for the series dvd sales myself, although I'm sure they're out there, but with a budget of only 35 million, a box office in mid spring of 18 or so million seems very attainable.

I'm a recent fan of the show, too. Downloaded all episodes, including the unaired pilot episodes from a website.

I noticed the DVD cover said there were three extra episodes...to those who've seen the DVD, what are they?

Firefly has only just started to be shown here (Australia) and they have already started playing it out of order  and it's only been two episodes. But I love it so far, and i'm gonna get the dvd's when they come out. I just love the "registered companion", the mechanic is pretty hot too .

Why are they playing it out of order? I've been watching it on Space here in Canada and I'm liking the series.

I dunno - Fox went crazy or something. I watched the DVD's in order and it was amazing.
The two extra episodes? I dunno - I never saw which ones were on TV - I get back to you on that.

*tapping fingers*
Just give me the episode list. I'm sure we could figure it out ;)

Xell101 12-07-2004 12:31 PM

The explanation I heard was that Fox thought it would do better if osmething more catchy to it's audience would go first, rather than the episodes which let you know what's going on, who is who, all that stuff, they dumped you into an episode in which a train was to be robbed. They played em' all out of order thinking it would help.

CinnamonGirl 12-07-2004 06:00 PM

I didn't watch it during the TV run...but I'm a huge Joss Whedon fan, so I'll be picking the DVD up soon (have to get season 7 of Buffy first, y'know :) )

Edit: Oh, and there will be a movie out next year...Serenity. So I'll have to watch the DVDs before then. I'm thinking Marchish, but I could be wrong.

GakFace 12-08-2004 07:24 AM

I watched this show religiously, and thus obviously picked up the DVD as soon as they came out. I'm pissed at fox for dropping this show..... tooooooooooooooooo amazingly good.

I'd love it to come back to the small screen but at least it'll do good at the movies. :)

Good series too bad is was cancelled, movie has been moved back apparently due to an overabundance of movies in the same vein as Firefly coming out at the same time.

Unaired Episodes from the back of the DVDs:

Trash- Involves a bride who's a con and Mal blows her cover

The Message- Old war buddy of Mal and Zoe is found dead in box sent to them

Objects In Space- Bounty hunter takes over Serenity to claim the bounty on River's head.

Enjoy guys and the DVDs are well worth it.

It is a great show. I hope they don't have to backtrack too much of the storyline in the movie so people who didn't watch the show can keep up. Anyone have links with some more information about the movie?

m0rpheus 12-10-2004 08:33 AM

Just borrowed the DVD off of a buddy of mine. I've only watched the first episode and I'm starting to dig this show already. One of the things I just found super cool was the no sound in space thing. :)

Ahh, I didn't realise those weren't aired. Perhaps I downloaded the DVD-rips or something. All good epsides, too!

and gonad, I think there's some information on http://www.fireflyfans.net , (Mr. Whedon posts there, too) -- and the movie will apparently partially consist of the pilot episodes, but I too am hoping that it won't cover TOO much of those episodes.

franzelneekburm 12-23-2004 06:46 PM

The whole out of order thing never really bothered me personally; originally I watched it completely out of order (I, uh, was borrowing it from my internet friends - I bought the DVD shortly thereafter though) and that didn't detract from my enjoyment of it at all.

I think the main reason for cancelling it wasn't ratings per se (they weren't great, but weren't too terrible either), but that the show was so expensive. The figures I've heard put it at just shy of two million dollars per episode - that's a lot for a sci-fi show (and it definitely showed in the quality of the show, but that's not the point).

On the other hand, the network can make a lot more money on reality shows that cost next to nothing to make - business-wise it wasn't a very difficult decision.

Oh, and it's "Jayne", not "Jane".

MahlerIsGod 12-23-2004 09:29 PM

It seems Fox has a nasty habit of canceling their best shows. Family Guy, Firefly and above all Space: Above And Beyond. Personally, I was hoping that the DVD release would generate more interest ala Family Guy but apparently it hasn't.
