So, let's talk about Adult Swim....

I was posting in a Simpson's season premiere thread earlier, like 30 minutes ago and posted this.

I'm glad someone cleared up the Perfect Strangers theme thing, it was driving me crazy.

If you want to talk dismal, try checking out the new Adult Swim cartoons they've tried to pawn off lately. Stoker and Hoop? Squidbillies? And what the hell was that Space Ghost discussion thing?

/thread jack

Carry on.

RedCometChar came back with this...

AS has had the habit ever since the Space Ghost days of mindfucking the viewers, seeing exactly how much they'll tolerate, but that was just way too repetitive and lackluster to appreciate- except Catman.

So to avoid completely hi-jacking the Simpson's thread and well, let's face it, I'm bored as fuck, I decided to start this one on a whim. That's right a whim.

So here goes. What's everyone elses thought on the dismal decline of Adult Swim? How stupid is too stupid? Are there any shows you enjoy?

guthmund 11-07-2004 11:53 PM

Well, thanks guthmund for bringing this to my attention. What a well thought out post.

All kidding aside. I had completely forgotten about that Perfect Hair Forever thing. Couldn't imagine why.... That "thing" was mildly amusing for about 5 minutes, after that, well, it's a memory best forgotten.

I enjoy the Futurama and Family Guy they're rehashing, but I've yet to see any of their new shows worth a shit other than The Venture Bros and that one gets a little tired sometimes. Even the new seasons of old favorites seems a bit off. Sealab, ATHF and Harvey Birdman all used to be funny. Mildly retarded, but entertaining. Now I wonder why I bother spending 15 minutes watching it. Although to be honest, I did enjoy the mooninites episode tonight. I always enjoy the mooninites, but the rest of it was total trash.

Adult swim? What a waste of air time.

I have Anime Network. Not that Anime Network is fantastic, but it's miles ahead of Adult Swim.

Lockjaw 11-08-2004 04:48 AM

Eh...anime now a lot of that is some pointless and annoying crap.

As far as Adult Swim goes, I didn't see the new stuff last night but...ATHF is still amusing to me. Not as funny as season two but it is funny. Sealab...it just lost it after the guy that played Captain Murphy died. He made that show with his wild ass presence. Harvey Birdman...never thought that was even remotely funny so this season sucking isn't a shock.
I DO like the Venture Brothers though. Johnny Quest was one of my faves growing up so seeing a twisted version of that show is great.
Home Movies is also funny too bad they have it shoved way the hell at the end of the night and I typically fall asleep before it comes on.
They need to do some new Space Ghost Coast to Coast episodes cut Harry Birdman, drop Oblongs, move Home Movies up in the line up and leave it at that.

Reese 11-08-2004 04:48 AM

Go Harvey Birdman! The best 15 minutes on TV... I already have Futurama and Family guy on DVD and I don't really like anything else on so....

crossova 11-08-2004 07:32 AM

SeaLab is corny...u may get 1 or two chuckles but the rest of the time you wonder what does it take to make a cartoon because these individuals obviously missed a few lessons.
ATHF is a tad bit better...but not really worth catching everyday.
Family Guy/Futurama/Venture Bros. are the only saving grace to that cartoon time block

asaris 11-08-2004 09:08 AM

I enjoy Harvey Birdman, though it's far from my favorite. Venture Bros is okay, but I've only seen a couple episodes and it seems like it might get old fast. ATHF and Sealab are just a waste of time, as far as I'm concerned. Of course Family Guy and Futurama are great, but I'm getting to the point where I've seen most episodes at least twice. Did anyone have any opinions on Super Milk Chan?

I forgot about that that. It's kind of funny, but only in small doses. I like McGuirk, but after 15 minutes the schtick gets a little old. He's like a cartoon David Puddy, best in small doses.

The Oblongs have got to be the worst idea for a cartoon ever. I can't think of any other cartoon that sucks as bad as this one. Oh wait, the Brak show. Guess I can.

Now, now hold on there a second. It's really gone down the shitter, but the episode mocking Homeland Security was brilliant. It's too bad the rest of the season didn't turn out that way.

As for anime, I never really did get that stuff. I've tried watching all the "great" movies that are constantly recommended, I've seen it on Cartoon Network and even watched a few episodes of different series on AS. I just don't get it. I really like the names...Akira, Witch Hunter Robin, Wolf's Rain, Ghost in the Shell, Fullmetal Alchemist, but I try watching them and my eyes glaze over and I feel my IQ drop.

Adult Swim is a lot more than anime now a-days.

I am glad that there are organle cartoons American cartoons for adults playing on TV. Simpsons, futurama and family are all really good, but fall into that 80-90s sitcom mood of show. Aquateen, Birdman, brak show take the classic formate of the hanna-barrbara short and twist it into some bizzar artschool orgy of funny

Willravel 11-08-2004 01:40 PM

I suggest watching Venture Bros. This IMO is the single most funny and original show on tv. Harvey takes a little getting used to, but it has it's moments to be sure. I never got Brak, ATHF, Sealab, or SpaceGhost. NOW Adult Swim is airing Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (by far my favorite anime series), Read or Die and Fullmetal Alchemist. Those are some damn good anime series, for those who don't know. Just watch what you like.

RedCometChar 11-08-2004 01:45 PM

I'm not the kind of guy who watches something just so he can gloat when the quality begins to waver, but I have to admit a lot of AS has been off its game lately. Birdman's good- but since it's one of the few shows that actually has any production values, new episodes are few and far between. ATHF, while still the best thing they have to offer, hasn't been as consistent this last season, and too often they're falling back on blood for a punchline. And I've never liked anything about Sealab. Ever. Even if it is just a stupid comedy show, I don't see why I should give a damn about the characters if the writers don't.

Last night's Squidbillies stunt was a big middle finger. I wasn't expecting much from the new show anyway, since it looked more or less like an ATHF derivative, and there's not much sense in ripping off your own ideas. But what they ran instead was just phoning it in. Anime parody? It's been done, and better, by eighth-graders on Newgrounds. And the second half was just an excuse for blood jokes, a Meatwad cameo, and saying "penis" once every fifteen seconds. The whole thing literally gave me a headache.

As for Milk-Chan, I saw some fansubbed episodes a while back, with the original spoofy opening sequence and the foreign pop-culture references explained with onscreen notes, and it was genuinely funny, something like a Japanese Ren & Stimpy. This version feels a lot slower paced, and the whole cast sounds like they're on lithium. It also had the misfortune to premier after AS's bad Squidbillies joke, and I doubt if it'll catch on.

K-Wise 11-08-2004 05:48 PM

I used to always watch Adult Swim. Family Guy, Futurama, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Oblongs (yeah I like it..a lot!), Home Movies (fuckin great), Spaceghost...etc. I never watched Mission Hill cause it looked kinda stupid but then one day I caught the episode where they made fun of "The Real World" and that was utter hilarity. One of the funniest things I'd seen in years. After that I started watching it and it was a pretty funny show. MTV for a short while there started showing cartoons again as well and they were showing this show called "3rd South" that show is fuckin funny. I haven't bothered to catch anything new they've been showing on Adult Swim. I guess i could give some of them a try. I've never really given Venture Bro's a try. I caught one episode once where some hooker was trying to have sex with them and it was so ridiculously stupid, corny and unfunny I no longer had a desire to watch the show anymore.

Asta!!

Nikilidstrom 11-08-2004 06:52 PM

Well, I must be a complete jackass, because to me, ATHF and Sealab are quite possibly the funniest things on TV right now, next to the Chappelle Show of course. ATHF has dropped the ball a little, but the Mooninites will never get old. And Sealab kills me everytime I see it, even in reruns. I will agree that the Perfect Hair and Space Ghost deal was crap, but you had to chuckle a little bit when Uncle Grandfather told Gerald that "Hamburgers should be high." That Milk Chan was a complete waste as well, and I've got to imagine that it won't last very long. Fullmetal Alchemist looks pretty sweet so far, and I'll be sure to follow it from now on.

As far as Harvey Birdman and Venture Bros., I never really warmed up to those, but they have both had their moments when I was laughing like crazy. I guess the only gripe I have with AS is that they pushed Cowboy Bebop and Trigun way back in the lineup, and they keep showing the same damn Inuyashas over and over again. I have seen all of Bebop, but I still love watching the series. I have not however finished either Trigun or Inuyasha, and the backtracking is a pain in the ass.

K-Wise 11-08-2004 07:15 PM

Triguns ending is pretty good. They've shown it several times. I've missed far too many episodes of Inuyasha to know if they're back tracking at all anymore. It pisses me off. What pisses me off even more is sometimes you can find the videos of the episodes you haven't seen at Wal Mart or some store like that.. a fuckin book store ya know? I'm like go out and buy the fuckin movies and show them on Cartoon Network dammit.

Asta!!

That was the very first episode of Venture Brothers and no it wasn't funny. Kind of creepy to be honest. But the later episodes really are pretty good. If you ever watched Johnny Quest or read Hardy Boy novels...you've got to watch this show it spoofs those young male world traveling adventurer shows perfectly.
Killer Moth really hits his stride around episode 3 and 4. And Brock Sampson is pretty funny as well and unlike most of the AS shows it builds upon itself like a good TV show should.

Oh and another show that's not Adult Swim but is on Toonami on Saturday....MegaXLR. That show fuggin rocks!
Maybe it feeds directly into my main loves big robots, cars, and fighting but that show is funny as hell. I mean it's like somebody reached into my mid 80s loving soul and made a cartoon out of it. The episode they spoofed the G-force and Voltron all in one fail swoops was greatness.

K-Wise 11-08-2004 08:59 PM

Damn I never watched Johnny Quest..it seemed so nerdy and un-action packed (new word). So I'd always skip it. Perhaps I shoulda given it a chance I dunno.

Asta!!

VitaminH 11-08-2004 09:05 PM

ATHF cracks me up. I haven't seen any of the new season due to my current lack of cable, but I loved the first two. Family Guy is classic as well.

Tophat665 11-08-2004 09:39 PM

When Space Ghost Coast to Coast was on for 15 mintues a night, that was funny. When they do that same kind of humor for the entire overnight, then it is just plain dumb.

Ultimate_Gohan 11-09-2004 11:56 AM

If you have seen my other posts, I have posted in anime threads before, I think that we can get along with a little anime and little comedy shows. Too much of one could upset the balance. I really like Adult Swim and the comedy shows like Aqua Teens. Aqua Teens came out on Halloween, all of the episodes and were very funny. Especially the "Broodwitch." And Homemovies, can't get enough of that show but I don't think they are making any more and it would surprise me if they did.

skinnymofo 11-09-2004 12:06 PM

maybe im in the minority, but i thought the space ghost talk show thing was rather humorous. The cartoon they had before it was funny but too long so it started to get old after about 6 or 7 minutes. they showed an old aqua teen that was funny but i thought that episode ended with shake completely melting from the radiation.
that cartoon after that the anime or whatever it was, was just plain horrible, i was just listening to it and all i dcould make out was a high pitched "dumb ass" or something like that. I was lokoing forward to seeing brak not that :/

FailedEagle 11-09-2004 05:36 PM

Put me down for ATHF, Family Guy, and Futurama. All three of these are my current favorite cartoons

The original Johnny Quest was before my time, but it came on late nights on Cartoon Network.I'd watch it when I could and enjoyed it.It was pretty much all action, with some mystery thrown in.

The new Johnny Quest episodes were good, too bad they only made 10ish episodes (it seemed that way :| )

Back on topic:ATHF can be hilarious at times, mainly the mooninites, and the spikey alien guys who wear headbands.CARL too,he's gold.

"Oh wont you please save us,from all ze money?"

I watch all of the shows, and I watch Family Guy religiously.

Thats hilarious!

Not to get into a quotefest or anything, but Oglethorpe (the spiky alien leader) has some of the best one liners on the show.

"Give me back my eyes so that I can express my anger!"

I've been hooked on that show ever since I saw the episode where the Mooninites had all the villains come to a meeting on the moon.

"From now on, when you say that you are here, it will mean 'here I am, rock me like a hurricane'"

classic

Lockjaw 11-09-2004 08:21 PM

Yeah the villain convention on the moon was probably the best episode.

Hmmmm... lemme make my list...

1) Villain convention
2) 1st Mooninite episode(The Quad laser)
3) 2nd Mooninite episode(With the Winger belt)
4) Dumber Dolls(Happy time Harry and Jiggle Billy)
5) Ol' Drippy(Idle hands spend time at the genitals)
6) Mc PeePants
7) Broodwich
8) The Clowning
9) The Mummy(HUGGSSS!!! CURSE!!!!)
10) Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past from the future

K-Wise 11-10-2004 04:24 AM

^ All great. Also the spike guys are pure gold.

"Yah vhy don't you go over zere? WHERE WE WILL MELT YOU YES"

Mc PeePants: Yeah I know the lyrics okay I wrote em!

Frylok: You like people
Mc PeePants: I like the LIQUID INSIDE people! I'm a giant spider!

then later on they're all in Carl's pool

Meatwad: Well gee I wonder where McPeePan(interupted)
Shake: He's in hell!
Meatwad: Oh well wh..
Shake: It's a firey pit where you burn and die forever!

"The drummer for Foghat.....Thats MY drummer!"

Too many to list in one sitting. Family Guy too they have like 2 threads dedicated to them.

Asta!!

Master_Shake 11-11-2004 01:09 PM

Super Milk Chan.
WTF?
I think it's coming back next week.

Asshole Lover 11-12-2004 04:21 AM

I LOVE SEALAB! it's supposed to be like that.

anyway, yes adult swim is lackluster. futurama used to be on at 7 or 7:30, so why is it "adult swim"

sadistikdreams 11-12-2004 12:35 PM

Super Milk Chan rad really rad.
Acid trip, man.

YOU DUMBASS!!!

Lockjaw 11-12-2004 02:05 PM

I woke up in the middle of the night to that Perfect hair crap and I was sick to my stomach.

Catmandu 11-12-2004 02:24 PM

Harvey Birdman on DVD in 2005. The superfriends episode was lame, but the unibooboo episode was classic. Most of these shows are hit and miss.

Esoteric 11-13-2004 06:06 PM

I like quite a few shows on Adult Swim. ATHF is hilarious, Sealab is always a good laugh, The Venture Bros. is great. Also, they've added Fullmetal Alchemist and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, both of those are great imo. Adult Swim is really the only reason I watch Cartoon Network anymore.

guthmund 11-13-2004 11:44 PM

Okay.

I watched a new episode of Full Metal Alchemist and I think I might like it. Ghost in the Shell was a little better this week.

So, maybe the influx of shit to Adult Swim is just their way of finding out what's good and what's not.

I still think the Oblongs is stupid and there is no way I'm getting on board the Super Milk Chan (or whatever the fuck it's called) bandwagon.

Da Munk 11-14-2004 03:09 AM

I tend to avoid the anime on Adult Swim because most of the dubs are horrible. I do watch it for Family Guy and Futurama though.

guthmund 11-16-2004 12:12 AM

And again, my hopes fall into the shitter.

Did anyone watch that "Tom goes to the Mayor" crap? The English language has no known words to cover the scope of my disgust.

I should've known it was retarded crap when I saw both Tenacious D and Bob Odenkirk (whatever...from Mr. Show) making appearances.

I think I would've preferred another 'Perfect Hair Forever' skit....

Willravel 11-16-2004 09:10 AM

You still have to admit that they are taking chances - something very rare in entertainment. Of course a lot of it is crap, BUT some of it is good. Shows like Venture are going to come out of this clusterf**k after the dust settles, and that gives me hope. I hope other networks catch on and try actually hiring innovative writers instead of pushing another reality show.

FoolThemAll 11-16-2004 05:00 PM

Oblongs is good. ATHF has very annoyingly been alternating between great stuff and utter shit as of late.

Family Guy and Futurama reruns are by far their best offering.

RCAlyra2004 11-16-2004 05:03 PM

Not sure I agree....

Yeah, I do have to admit that. :)

Did anybody think "Tom and the Mayor" was funny? It's not that I didn't think it was funny, more like did anybody think it was funny?

It's one thing to run a whole bunch of odd stuff and see if anything sticks. It's quite another to run utter shit just because you can. Build, build, build anticipation and then run crap that you know is crap and laugh at all the idiots who tuned in.

Funny once. Maybe. They've got a track record of pulling this same schtick and that's what's aggravating.

Nikilidstrom 11-17-2004 08:18 PM

What amazed me was who was attached to that Tom/Mayor piece o' junk. Odekerk, Jack Black, Kyle Gass, and I could of swore I saw Patton Oswald during one of the previews. These are all guys I think are hilarious, but I can't imagine why they waste their time with this crap.

Lockjaw 11-17-2004 09:00 PM

Best thing about Adult Swim now...the bump music.

evilbeefchan 11-21-2004 10:51 PM

I thought some parts of Tom goes to the Mayor was funny. Like when they showed the clip of his stepkids throwing stuff at him and yelling "You're not our daddy!!" Everything else kinda made me sad, actually.

I've kinda gotten sick of Sealab and Inyuasha as well. It's just like the whole Dragonball Z thing again, where they restart so many times that it's not worth watching anymore. I'm only excited about Saturday's lineup, now. And I was really angry that they got rid of both Case Closed AND Lupin.

hawkeye 12-03-2004 03:52 AM

Adult Swim is almost like a small cult around here.

Warning: Opinions Ahead:

Family Guy and Futurama are always good for a watch, and Mission Hill and the Oblongs are solid too. Sealab has always seemed to be hit or miss, and ATHF usually just pisses me off. (same w/ space ghost, brak show, ...)
Venture Brothers seems pretty good, but I havn't watched enough to form an opinion yet, and Squidbillies is just horrid.
I watched 3 minutes of Tom Goes to the Mayor tonight, and I wanted to kill something.

and RE: anime,
tropple: yes, AN is probably better, BUT, it's a premium channel. you have to want (and pay for) it to get it.
Adult Swim has done a great job of getting some stuff out there where people who aren't fans can get ahold of it, albiet in a edited form.

Bebop is good, Trigun is good, Case Closed (Detective Conan, for you IRC people) seems fun, I nearly wet myself with glee when I saw that they were airing FMA, and Inuyasha is enjoyable, if slightly repetitive (I'm not sure where AS is, I've been watching the Jap subs as they come over)
I just wish they'd bring back Outlaw Star
:-)

Hiya,

AN is free for me with comcast's on-demand (NJ). Comcast has recently added what they call Anime Selects. It has a number of titles I've heard of before, mainly older things, judging from the art and animation.

I saw a few outlaw stars, I wish it would have been on at a better time for me.

Being a Canuck, i don't have an opportunity to watch Adult swim, but Teletoon, the canadian cartoon network, plays some Adult swim shows and from what ive watched, ive got two words for ya: Home Movies
season one sucked, and teletoon has a very limited number of episodes, but from what ive seen, its one of the funniest shows on tv. i believe that it puts seinfelds "show about nothing" idea to very good use, the way the characters mumble and studder for the whole episode is hilarious without being that obnoxious. in conclusion, I love Home Movies

alarment13 12-04-2004 02:35 PM

dont have cable anymore so im behind on what adult swim shows now, but I really enjoyed sealab2021 (haven't seen any since capt murphy's voice died) some ATHF like the episodes with danzig or the mooninites

but my favorite is home movies, glad to see it come out on dvd, I can finally deleat the episodes on my hard drive

Ganguro 12-07-2004 06:43 AM

Home Mobies is in squigglyvision, right? just like that one show about the dentist..
I believe it originally aired on ABC saturday mornings in the kid block.
I find it quite humourous, but besides family guy and futurama.. I dont really watch Adult swim that much.
The anime i've already seen..and evem though i want to support english voice actors.. I cant stand the dubbing..
Though super milk chan is so retardulous, it doesnt matter what language it's in. Why didnt they pick up Excel Saga or something instead.. Warner Brothers has enough money..

Oh and the squidbillies idea was the CEO's brainchild.. that's the sole reason it got made. He's a big hick, and it's semi autobiographical (sp?)

I'm at a hotel right now watching AS while on the hotels wireless net with my notebook computer. I don't usually watch TV but the internet was getting boring so I turned on the tube and flipped through channels. I come to AS playing a show called Robot Chicken.. Jesus, that show cracked me up! It's a stop-action type of cartoon, and it just has a whole bunch of stupid funny shit. It goes really fast too, for instance I just saw a scene with a Teletubbie smoking a joint and smiling which only lasted 2 seconds. It even says on AS's website that it's a show for the ADD/ADHD generation ;) :D

skinnymofo 02-24-2005 10:25 PM

AS has some serious problems with how they are scheduling things right now i think.
they show family guy 7 times a week, and 6 and 7 are 15minutes apart. they need something more for sunday than family guy that chicken show and then family guy again. they have a lot of good cartoons but seem to save them for past 1 am.
and i really hate that milk chan shit. sigh

FngKestrel 02-24-2005 11:56 PM

I used to watch Jonny Quest and the Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, so Venture Bros cracks me up.

Lockjaw 02-25-2005 06:29 AM

If you liked Robot Chicken it's done in part by the people who do Twisted Mego Theatre in ToyFare Magazine. The older Twisted Mego Theater was hillarious.

I used to be entertained, but after a while complete and utter randomness isn't as funny. It never seems clever to me, just wacky.

Cycler 02-25-2005 03:27 PM

Who knows what people will like anymore. Yeah I watched Tom a few times but it just seemed painful to me. But who would've ATHF would have stuck? I mean 6 of one half a dozen of the other who knows?

K-Wise 03-01-2005 08:31 PM

I watched Robot Chicken the other day and was thinking "Hmm this isn't very funny" then next thing I knew I was laughing my ass off...partly due to "Most one sided fist fights" and the clumsy robot actors. Especially the final robot haha.

Asta!!

the_dave 03-31-2005 10:32 PM

I watched Robot Chicken the other night, the only funny part was the star wars scene where they eliminated the need for the other movies. Other than that, very not funny.

heccubusiv 04-02-2005 04:22 PM

Robot Chicken, the funniest show on tv, the darkest clip ever was extremely funny

Cycler 04-02-2005 05:02 PM

Yeah I just watched the one where Darth took care of all the potential plot lines, overall a pretty good off-beat show.

Willravel 04-02-2005 06:33 PM

The first episode of Robot Chicken had me rolling. Somehow the cylons falling on each other just got to me. Since episode one, it has been dissapointment after dissapointment. I wish they'd play the first one again.

Zeraph 04-02-2005 11:02 PM

The first episode of Robot Chicken I liked, some funny, some not, but I havn't been able to catch any of the recent ones. I can't see it lasting long though.

RedCometChar 04-02-2005 11:20 PM

My biggest apprehension with Robot Chicken, after seeing all the blood-as-a-punchline stuff on the early ads, would be that the show would turn out like an average Newgrounds flash. It's still violent and crass, but a lot better than I expected. It's also awesome that Dom DeLuise and Burt Reynolds played themselves in the Cannonball Run parody.

Locobot 04-08-2005 08:02 AM

I no longer watch the first hour of AdultSwim as I've seen all the Family Guy and Futurama episodes they show. I don't think Futurama was that good to begin with, seriously formulaic. Futurama feels like an add for "bite my metal ass" merchandise that never hit store shelves because no one cared, hollywood team writing at it's most mediocre.

Sealab has been my favorite because of the dark humor, especially the "Stim-u-tac" and "Bizarro" episodes. "Bizarro I love you Bizarro"

A lot of the anime imports alienate me at first, but then once I figure out the characters I generally end up liking them. I've even come to appreciate Case Closed which I hated at first. That show features an adult in a child body who knocks out the detective he follows around to with a dartgun to solve crimes in his voice. That's great!

Inuyasha is probably one of the most creative shows I've ever seen. The arc of the plotline is amazing once you get in to it. The various characters and monsters that populate that world all seem so unique to me. It's sad that most Americans will never get beyond their knee-jerk reaction to the show's Japanese-ness (the names, quirks, etc.).

I agree that Tom goes to the Mayor is a little disappointing so far, but I still want to see more. Robot Chicken is hilarious-again really dark humor. Robot Chicken panders heavily to my inner geek.

Milk Chan hasn't really done it for me yet. I really liked the teaser ad for it and I was excited about it but turned out different than I thought it would. I thought it would be really spastic and fast-paced, like an anime-themed Madame Chao (epileptics beware, seriously). Instead it's more off-kilter and slow-paced. It should probably be a :15 minute show.

Stompy 04-08-2005 08:08 AM

All ATHF episodes are awesome.

I love some Sealab (especially the Bizarro episode), haven't seen much the Oblongs.

Family Guy is great, of course... so is Robot Chicken.

I hate the Anime.

Adult Swim usually has something for everyone, though.

Apokx 04-08-2005 09:24 AM

Fooly Cooly was an awesome little anime series.

I wish they'd shore more short series, like Hellsing etc.

Kadath 04-08-2005 09:34 AM

The bumps keep talking about an all-adult swim network, which seems completely untenable. Their ratings for the first two hours are pretty solid, but guess what the first hour is? You got it, Family Guy and Futurama, which, as others have mentioned, they've run through about 15 times by now. I enjoy Venture Brothers and am looking forward to season two, but I never got that into ATHF, Sealab, Tom Goes to the Mayor and the other "let's just slap crazy shit together and maybe people like it" type shows. We'll see what the upcoming new shows are like, but Robot Chicken is generally pretty good, and that's the bottom line: most AS concepts work only as 15 minute shows (at best) and it's hard for them to fill the several hours they have, let alone 24 hours a day.

snowy 04-08-2005 09:42 AM

I love Adult Swim for the most part. Like everyone here (or so it seems) I've seen most of the Family Guy/Futurama episodes so the first hour can be hit or miss for me. I LOVE Venture Bros.!!! I can't wait for Season 2! I also really enjoy ATHF and Sealab--especially Sealab. I like some of the anime but not much. I don't know how I feel about any of the new shows--I haven't had much time to watch television lately what with school and all. It's hard to stay up that late!

Bacchanal 04-09-2005 08:27 AM

I'm slow evidently.

I just saw Robot Chicken for the first time the other night, and laughed my ass off. Great, great show!

As far as all of Adult Swim, I don't really like it. I love the same ones that everyone seems to love; Family Guy and Futurama, but I have all those episodes on DVD too, so I don't usually bother watching TV for them.

I love ATHF, and The Venture Brothers, and sometimes can get into Tom Goes To The Mayor, but sometimes it's terrible as well.

I don't like the anime they show at all. I had a friend that told me I had to watch Cowboy Bebop, so I did, and I didn't like it at all. At least I tried it out, I guess.

Also, I never got into Brak, Sealab, Space Ghost... I tried, believe me, but they just aren't for me I guess.

guthmund 04-09-2005 11:57 PM

Okay, after settling down into their latest schedule there's not quite so much crap.

Family guy and Futurama (meh? Entertaining, but I've seen a lot of them)

Of the new stuff, I really like Full Metal Alchemist and have watched the last few episodes of Ghost in the Shell and was pleasantly surprised.

Robot Chicken is pretty much hit or miss. Just like ATHF and Sealab.

The milk chan shit still has to go as does Tom.

Nikilidstrom 04-10-2005 08:33 AM

Please Cancel:
Milk Chan
Tom/Mayor

Worthless:
Futurama

Great:
Full Metal Alchemist (best anime series I've seen)
ATHF
Sealab
Harvey Birdman
Family Guy
Cowboy Beebop (although it is time to move on to another series)
Trigun
Inuyasha

Still Not Sure:
Venuture Bros.
Ghost In The Shell (getting better though, loved both movies)
Robot Chicken

ariekitten 04-11-2005 02:18 PM

I personally enjoy Futurama, Family Guy, Sealab2021, ATHF, Home Movies, The Venture Bros, and then some of the anime shows they have, but the ones i hate the most are Super Milk Chan and Tom goes to the Mayor. absolute pile of steaming pony loaf if you ask me.

Some of the episodes of the Brak Show were ok.

DownwardSpiral 04-12-2005 10:46 PM

Only real show I tune in to on Adult Swim is Aqua Teen Hunge Force, lol. I absolutel loved the episode with the Happy Time Harry doll.

snowy 04-12-2005 11:03 PM

Heehee...

On World of Warcraft, my guild is called the Happytime Harriers. :D

We even have action bills.

Nikilidstrom 04-13-2005 02:18 PM

Was that David Cross doing happy time harry's voice? If not, whoever did sounds just like him. When he convinced the hillbilly doll to kill himself was freakin hilarious, as morbid as it sounds.

Yes, it was David Cross performing under a pseudonym.

DownwardSpiral 04-13-2005 02:26 PM

Lol yes, Happy Time Harry convinced Jiggle Billy to shoot himself, and it was funny. I also enjoyed the whole thing with Shake wanting to become a Highlander at the end of that episode. Another good one, I think, was the one about the Bus of the Undead, where Shake was talking about reverse vampires and such lol. Yes, Aqua Teen is a great show indeed.

Lockjaw 04-13-2005 08:06 PM

Boxy Brown is quickly becoming my favorite on that show.
Nothing funnier than a jive talking Box with a fro that only Meatwad can hear.

Nikilidstrom 04-14-2005 06:43 AM

ATHF is definitely top notch. Two of my favorite quotes came from the Bus of the Undead episode.

Master Shake: When did you get a cloning machine? I command you to answer me!Wait, no, clone me, and answer my clone!

(Carl is all tied up and hanging upside down from the ceiling)
Frylock: What did you do to our neighbor?!
Mothmonsterman: Oh, yeah, I laid my eggs in his esophagus. You know, I gotta propagate my species and... he's being a real baby about it.

Really there are some good episodes, they are well hidden, very well hidden. I don't like many of the episodes they have done except for the Mooninites, a good episode is called "The Last One", it is the episode with all the vilians on the moon.

RedCometChar 05-05-2005 09:51 PM

I love ATHF, but I personally think that one's a little weak. The Aqua Teens only make a token appearance, and for the most part, all the laughs come from "Oh, I remember that guy". My own favorite used to be the one with Happy Time Harry, but now I like the Halloween one best (Blood Feast Island Man!).

I'm a little surprised the subject of Sealab's cancellation hasn't come up here. I never liked the show, but I think of it like Dracula- I'm glad it's dead, but it was so much fun to hate when it was around.

Master_Shake 05-06-2005 07:29 AM

Ignignot: "When we call your stupid name say here, which we shall take as short for 'here I am, rock you like a hurricane.'"

ATHF: Funniest show ever.

Cycler 05-06-2005 07:59 AM

I hadn't heard about Sealab getting the axe. "Daddy needs his medicine!"

Darn, I liked that show.
