Boy doesnt get girl (SPOILERS)

This is a kinda weird thing to post but I'm strange so go with me. In almost every movie the guy gets the girl and they live happily after. There are a handful of movies that don't end up like this. The only two I can think of are
My Best Friend's Wedding and Chasing Amy. If anyone can think of other movies that end with the two characters who don't end up happily after, feel free to post.
Later,
Amber

maleficent 10-22-2004 07:21 PM

The most famous of all -
Rick didn't get Ilsa in Casablanca

Or in the movie Now, Voyager...

Bette Davis didn't end up with Paul (why reach for the moon, when we can have the stars) Henreid

MPower 10-22-2004 07:37 PM

Gladiator.
Any batman movie.

Fremen 10-22-2004 08:23 PM

If I remember correctly - "Muriel's Wedding"

/loves ABBA

wario 10-22-2004 08:41 PM

The Terminal.
Tom Hanks doesn't end up with Catherine Zeta Jones.

Butterfly Effect

Although it is not a love story - Serpico. She leaves him and is never heard from again.

Zubon 10-24-2004 07:07 AM

"White Men Can't Jump"?

amonkie 10-24-2004 10:03 AM

If you watch the alternate ending to the Prince & Me, they go their seperate ways.

A lot of movies...

CityOfAngels 10-25-2004 02:37 AM

I can't believe no one has mentioned "The Great Gatsby."

CityOfAngels 10-25-2004 02:38 AM

P.S. I think "SPOILERS" should be added to the title here.

You're my favourite for mentioning this movie. It's hilarious!

I agree, completely.

The point of this thread: I have no idea; all of mine were mentioned already, Pretty in Pink maybe? She ends up with one of the two guys madly in love with her (oh that we all had such problems....) :hmm:

Grace, Too 10-25-2004 07:43 AM

Mel Gibson in What Women Want. A superb ending that saved the movie.

Kadath 10-25-2004 01:41 PM

Heat.
Out of Sight(though that is left somewhat open).

I disagree with Gladiator. I put that in the same realm as Braveheart, where the boys DOES get the girl, in the afterlife. In both it is made very clear that the heroes are going home to their wives.

CityOfAngels 10-25-2004 11:19 PM

Another one I can't believe no one has mentioned yet: Romeo and Juliet

Although I am kicking myself for the not even thinking of it, I might lean towards this not counting for this topic. My take is that in [i]most/[i] cases, death doesn't qualify for not getting the girl/boy. (As previously mentioned - Romeo and Juliet type deaths would qualify.)

And for another thought, although he always "gets" the girl(s), James Bond never seems to keep them. The only girl he "keeps" is Moneypenny, and that is unrequited love.

I don't know if it counts because it's an unrequited, but Bateau doesn't end up with Kusangi at the end of Ghost in the Shell.

I can't remember now, do they end up together at the end of An Affair to Remember? (Obviously, it wasn't an affair to remember, since I can't recall the ending). I'm guessing they probably do since the end up together at the of Sleepless in Seattle which is basically the same movie.

Ok yes this is a spolier - but a new brilliant British film called Layer Cake. Would recommend this film to anyone. Lots of twists and turns and a very good ending.

Fremen 10-26-2004 07:38 PM

espi jarred my memory with 'Ghost in the Shell'...

Boy doesn't get girl in 'Ghost', with Swayze, Moore and Goldberg.

In the movie 'Shane', there's a great dynamic going on between Shane, and Joe and Marian Starrett.
Marian meets a friendly, but mysterious gunfighter that's the opposite of her laid-back farmer husband.
Shane meets a pioneer lady who represents all that he's wanted and yearns for in a woman, but can't have, because of his respect for both husband and wife, and his lifestyle.
Joe realizes Shane and Marian have developed strong feelings for each other, but he's a man sure of his and his wife's love for each other, plus he also has a deep respect for Shane and realizes Shane wouldn't do anything to hurt them.

In the end, Shane doesn't get the woman.
(this is my take on the movie, yours may vary) :)

dksuddeth 10-27-2004 06:08 AM

Pearl Harbor. Josh Hartnett ended up dead so the OTHER guy (affleck) got the girl.

A walk to remember - mandy moore dies at the end. Ok, so he got the girl, but he lost her too.

It's been ages since I have seen that movie, but the ending assumes that Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant do end up together... Nice happy ending I think...

Wayne's World.
(The first ending, I think)

But Mel does get the girl - as he's leaving she chases after him.

Speed_Gibson 11-01-2004 08:24 AM

Have to mention the best screen version from 1936 of the play Petrified Forest. Bette Davis is gorgeous, the younger Bogart is great, and Leslie Howard is fantastic as well.

Speed_Gibson 11-01-2004 08:30 AM

and of course Bob Hope's character in nearly all of the road films. There are exceptions like The Road to Utopia (The Road to Rio involves hypnotism and would be suspect on 'winning the girl') but The Road to Bali is more typical where Bing walks away at the end with both Dorothy Lamour AND Jane Russell with Bob alone.

edit: spelling error

Fremen 11-01-2004 05:16 PM

I'm surprised CityofAngels hasn't mentioned........."City of Angels", with Nic Cage and Meg Ryan. ;)
I didn't particularly care for the ending, but it certaintly makes an impact.

Actually boy gets part of the girl. :D

MikeyChalupa 11-02-2004 11:44 AM

The original ending to "Eurotrip" that's on the DVD... I'm actually glad they didn't go with it. It sucked.

The Legend of 1900 (See this if you haven't yet. I know I just told you a part of it but there's much more going on.)

Just thought of another: Some Like It Hot. Osgood doesn't end up with Daphne (Jack Lemmon). Of course, it was a little ambiguous...maybe they do end up together after all.

MovieNut 11-14-2004 07:19 PM

Dude, excellent point. Funny, until reading this thread I would have agreed with you, thinking the bland Hollywood machine is so set in cranking out it's mindless nauseating carbon copies; where we should subconsciously believe our lives should parallel the shallow and predictable lines they draw over and over again. Alas, I digress...

In the Journey of Natty Gann, John Cusack (Harry) and Meredith Salenger (Natty) don't end up together.
