Favorite TV Theme Songs

I don't know how it got brought up, but my wife and I were discussing the best TV theme songs a few days ago. I wasn't able to narrow it done to just a single theme, so I'm curious what others have to say on the subject.

Here's my nominations so far (in no particular order):

1) Odd Couple
2) M*A*S*H (Bonus points if you know the words)
3) Buffy the Vampire Slayer
4) King of the Hill
5) Dick Van Dyke Show
6) Cheers
7) Secret Agent Man

I'm really tempted to nominate The Golden Girls theme, because I'm positive that if you started singing it in a room filled with 25-32 year olds everyone would join in. But, I just can't bring myself to do it.

Arc101 10-07-2004 03:00 PM

I always liked Hill Street Blues (showing my age here), Fraggle Rock, Mission Impossiable and Angel.

Tophat665 10-07-2004 03:34 PM

Barney Miller, WKRP, Animaniacs, Looney Tunes.

Semi Interesting Sidenote: When I was in high school I spent a quarter on home study. I pretty much spent the entire day watching TV while I did my class work. I still remember the schedule I watched:
 • The Price Is Right
 • I Love Lucy
 • The Andy Griffith's Show (another deserving nominee)
 • Gomer Pyle, USMC
 • Barney Miller
 • Perry Mason
 • Various afternoon cartoons

ratbastid 10-07-2004 05:50 PM

The Night Court opening theme is pure funk jazz brilliance!

Also, thanks for exposing me to MyThemes.tv! What a great site!

Fremen 10-07-2004 06:56 PM

Hmm, pretty hard to pick the best ones...

Let's see...
Grizzly Adams---------------------------------Magnum P.I.
Eight Is Enough (the second theme song)------Wonder Woman
The Brady Bunch------------------------------McGuyver
Mary Tyler Moore Show------------------------Hawaii Five-0
Monkees--------------------------------------Sanford and Son
Branded--------------------------------------The Lone Ranger
High Chaparral--------------------------------Fall Guy
One Day At a Time----------------------------The Andy Griffith Show
Jonny Quest----------------------------------Airwolf
Green Acres----------------------------------Charmed
Greatest American Hero------------------------Buck Rogers In The 25th Century
Dynasty--------------------------------------Bonanza
Family Ties-----------------------------------Welcome Back, Kotter
Facts of Life----------------------------------Gilligan's Island
Star Trek-------------------------------------Incredible Hulk
Star Trek: The Next Generation----------------Newhart
Battlestar Galactica---------------------------Mystery Science Theater 3000

So many more rattling around in my skull...;)

Jimellow 10-07-2004 06:59 PM

Fraggle Rock and Alf had nice theme songs.. They come to mind off the top of my head..

Also, the theme song to Doogie Howser is pretty memorable.

espi 10-07-2004 07:21 PM

Wow. I can't believe I forgot Hawaii 5.0 and Jonny Quest. Both of them were my computer startup sounds for awhile.

Although, I gotta say, the JQ theme loses something without the accompanying visuals. So, that may be a mark down in the "greatest theme song" ever scoring. (I mean, if you can't see crocodile men, what's the point?)

heyal256 10-07-2004 07:53 PM

Unless I missed them here are some more themes to throw in:

Growing pains
Knight Rider
The A-team
Miami Vice

I wiill say that Greatest American hero was the first theme to come to my mind when I saw this subject

alicat 10-07-2004 08:02 PM

Damn! There are so many and I know my brain won't recall them all. When I have time to think, I'll edit and add more.

Little House on the Prairie
The Waltons
Courtship of Eddie's Father
Land of the Lost
Gilligans Island
Family Affair
Shazzam!
Captain Caveman
I Dream of Jeannie
Leave it to Beaver
All in the Family
Barney Miller
Silver Spoons
Benson

I'm guessing only Gen-Xer's (I hate that term) will remember some of those...
O'kay, to tired to think beyond the mid 80's, I'll have to post more tomorrow.

Oh, one recent...Malcolm in the Middle..."Life is unfair....!"

Ali

Willravel 10-07-2004 09:10 PM

Frowning Budah 10-09-2004 03:33 PM

Muppet Show sure, but does anyone remember the Banana Splits theme songs or is it just me. For some reason I think about that one all the time.

farcryer 10-09-2004 06:29 PM

Yes it's stupid, and yes it's probably very cheesy, and yes you'll probably laugh, but I kinda always liked the "Space: Above and Beyond" theme. I have a soft spot for martial themes.

former newt 10-09-2004 07:03 PM

The Angel theme is awesome...very mellow and almost haunting.

MikeyChalupa 10-09-2004 07:22 PM

My vote goes to McGyver.

Dingo2879 10-10-2004 05:48 PM

Airwolf, Great American Hero, Boston Public, those would be my top 3!

t3m3st 10-10-2004 08:25 PM

How about Smallville? I love 'Save Me'

bundy 10-10-2004 09:01 PM

doubt many of you would know it... but McCallum (starred John Hannah).

it used a really really sexy version of Cry Me A River (no, i don't mean that Timberfake crap, i mean the original).

that and Cowboy Bebop are the only ones that immediately spring to mind.

oh... how could i forget... ASTROBOY!!!... hands down...

gondath 10-10-2004 11:20 PM

I'll add a few I didn't see mentioned here- Highlander (can't believe this one wasn't listed), Band of Brothers (even though it was a limited run), Six Feet Under, and Oz. I'm sure I'm missing big ones, and I'll add them if I remember them.

tokaok 10-11-2004 12:31 AM

byesman 10-11-2004 11:16 AM

I can't believe no one mentioned:

Green acres is the place for me.
Farm livin' is the life for me.
Land spreadin' out so far and wide.
Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside.

New York is where I'd rather stay.
I get allergic smelling hay.
I just adore a penthouse view.
Dah-ling I love you but give me Park Avenue.

...The chores.
...The stores.
...Fresh air.
...Times Square

You are my wife.
Good bye, city life.
Green Acres we are there.

Hehe...I think that's one of the songs I ended up singing with my wife when the original conversation came about.

Glory's Sun 10-12-2004 08:14 AM

I'd have to go with Fraggle Rock and the Smurfs for cartoons and for real tv shows Cheers is tops for me

trickyy 10-12-2004 09:54 PM

while i think knight rider is one of the coolest, another theme caught my attention because of it's brilliant expository function.

renegade.

lorenzo lamas motorcycles his way to foil plots of many a pastier-skinned villian. unfortunately i don't have a link for this musical gem (renegade fansites seem to be dead for some reason!) but imagine a gravely voiced man uttering the following words:

http://www.angelfire.com/nc/bobby6k/images/Mainlogo.jpg

"He was a cop, and good at his job. But then he committed the ultimate sin, and testified against other cops gone bad. Cops who tried to kill him, but got the woman he loved instead. Framed for murder, now he prowls the badlands. An outlaw hunting outlaws, a bounty hunter, a RENEGADE! "

i'll admit this raises more questions than it answers, and sounds like it was written by a fourth grader. but he's a renegade. he makes his own rules and looks damn good doing it.

ok, i admit i've never seen this show. but those are words from the actual theme song.

this song ranks right up there with stan bush's "the touch" from transformers: the movie. covered by dirk diggler in boogie nights, "the touch" offers wholly unprecedented self-assurance. (not techincally a tv theme, but certainly entertaining)

RedCometChar 10-12-2004 10:06 PM

Wow, most of my favorites are already here.

The Munsters
The Incredible Hulk (the closing theme, mainly)
Get Smart
Galaxy High School (just watched a tape of this the other day. The Eagles' Don Felder composed the opening theme)
Spider-Man (60's version, not so much the 90's one)

Cartoons used to have great opening themes. If you watch Fox toons lately, there isn't one out of the bunch that isn't a crime against humanity.

Coronaboy72 10-13-2004 12:55 AM

The Wonder Years
M*A*S*H
Hawaii 5-0
The Dukes of Hazard
The Sopranos
The Fall Guy
Monster Garage
Charmed
The Simpsons
Roseanne
Andy Griffith Show
Who's The Boss?
Step By Step
Smallville
WKRP (the song during the credits too)

shadowalker 10-13-2004 12:53 PM

Have to agree with the frist post M*A*S*H and the theme song is Suicide is Painless.

Through Early morning fog I see
Visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see

(chorus)
That Suicide is Painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

Try to find a way to make
All our little joys relate
Without that ever present hate
But now I know that it's too late
And (chorus)

The game of life is hard to play
I'm going to lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
So this is all I have to say
That (chorus)

The only way to win is cheat
And lay it down before I'm beat
And to another give a seat
For that's the only painless feat
'Cause (chorus)

The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works it's way on in
The pain grow stronger watch it grin
For (chorus)

A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
Is it to be or not to be
And I replied "Oh why ask me."
Cause (chorus)
And you can do the same thing if you please

for the rest i would have to say

Transformers
G.I. Joe
Las Vegas
Evangelion (import anime)
Theme from Macgyver.

OOOH! Bonus points! Too bad I don't really have anything to award.

Of course, it should be said that the words were only used in the movie version, and were never part of the TV theme song. (Probably too depressing).

Tophat665 10-14-2004 06:30 PM

Well I'm not the kind to kiss and tell
but I've been seen with Farrah
I've never been with anything less than a nine, so fine
I've been on fire with Sally Field
Gone fast with a girl named Bo
But somehow they did not end up as mine.

It's a death defyin' life I lead
I take my chances
I die for a livin' in the movies and TV
But the hardest thing I ever do
Is watch my leadin' ladies
Kiss some other guy while I'm bandagin' my knee

I might fall from a tall building
I might roll a brand new car
'Cause I'm the unknown stuntman
that made Redford such a star.

I never spend much time in school
But I taught ladies plenty.
It's true I hire my body out for pay, Hey Hey
I've gotten burned over Cheryl Tiegs
blown up for Raquel Welch.
But when I end up in the hay
it's only hay, Hey Hey.

I might jump an open drawbridge
Or Tarzan from a vine
'Cause I'm the unknown stuntman
that makes Eastwood look so fine.

Who'd'a thunk it? Lee Majors could sing. Sort of.

Cowboy Bebop - It's going to bring back Jazz single handedly!

bus trips while a senior in Band. (Yes, we were nerds.)
Spongebob Squarepants? :P

Ultimate_Gohan 10-16-2004 05:19 PM

Oh yes, ROSWELL. I can't belive no one said it.

gondath 10-20-2004 07:44 PM

I just had to add one I forgot- Walker, Texas Ranger. Any song performed by Chuck Norris makes the list for me.

poopermcgraw 10-21-2004 02:54 AM

Hate to be a party pooper but are we just listing our favorite tv shows, or the shows we grew up with now? Seems they'd be the themes we remember/like the best; i.e. for me it's macgyver/murder she wrote as they were on together when i was a kid. nowadays i geek it out with ds9 being my favorite star trek theme...and stargate sg-1's is cool too. all the old school disney cartoons...haha ducktales, woo-ooo. the late-80's sitcoms like cheers, cosby show, growing pains, night court, etc i can all remember too. ah the good ole' days...now everyone just uses the pop song of the month.

BonesCPA 10-21-2004 08:24 AM

What's Happening - I can still picture Roger, Dwayne and Rerun bouncing the ball down the block at the end of the show.

Fat Albert - Hey, Hey, Hey

There's a new show called Rescue Me that has an AWSOME theme song!

C'mon C'mon Lyrics by The Von Bondies
url=http://www.warnerreprise.com/asx/vb_cmoncmona_128-a.asx

On another day c'mon c'mon
With these ropes I tied can we do no wrong
Now we grieve cause now is gone
Things were good when we were young

With my teeth locked down I can see the blood
Of a thousand men who have come and gone
Now we grieve cause now is gone
Things were good when we were young

Is it safe to say? (c'mon c'mon)
Was it right to leave? (c'mon c'mon)
Will I ever learn? (c'mon c'mon)
(c'mon c'mon c'mon c'mon)

As I make my way c'mon c'mon
These better nights that seem too long
Now we grieve cause now is gone
Things were good when we were young

With my teeth locked down I can see the blood
Of a thousand men who have come and gone
Now we grieve cause now is gone
Things were good when we were young

Is it safe to say? (c'mon c'mon)
Was it right to leave? (c'mon c'mon)
Will I never learn? (c'mon c'mon)
(c'mon c'mon c'mon c'mon)

Is it safe to say? (c'mon c'mon)
Was it right to leave? (c'mon c'mon)
Will I never learn? (c'mon c'mon)
(c'mon c'mon c'mon c'mon)

And know this day these deepened wounds don't heal so fast
Can't hear me croon of a million lies that speak no truth
Of a time gone by that now is through

Helpher811 11-05-2004 02:51 PM

Hawaii Five-O (The bongos are great!!!), Miami Vice (the place of Miami feels like Miami and Miami.....and some more Miami), DS9, cause I'm a geek and the Defiant rocks, and of course...
Space Ghost Coast to Coast. (I dunno why).

thanks for the MP3 earlier and the lyrics to Suicide is Painless. Classics, dudes!

LLL2 11-05-2004 05:08 PM

silent_jay 11-05-2004 10:10 PM

Three's Company, I have no idea if it's been mentioned.

pocon1 11-06-2004 09:22 PM

Woke up this morning,
got yourself a gun,

Only two other people mentioned the sopranos. I am three.

TheWalkinDude 01-16-2005 07:12 AM

I love the Firefly opening song:

Take my love, take my land,
take me where I cannot stand.
I don't care, I'm still free,
You can't take the sky from me.

Take me out into the black,
Tell them I ain't coming back.
Burn the land and boil the sea,
You can't take the sky from me.

There's no place I can be,
Since I found Serenity.
But you can't take the sky from me.

Absolutely awesome, and it captures the feel of the show exactly. Understandable, really, seeing as the song was written before any real work began on the show

Charlatan 01-16-2005 09:23 AM

Spiderman (60s version)... a groovy classic
Angel... moving and moody
Gilligan's Island... gives a perfect plot synopsis in a catchy tune.
Barretta... you can't go wrong with Sammy Davis Jr. singing The Sparrow (Don't do the crime if you can't do the time, no... Don't do it!)

Bauer_Power 01-17-2005 10:28 PM

Magnum P.I. and Hawaii 50

Moonlighting Theme

Catmandu 03-04-2005 02:36 PM

Oh man, my faves have to be Beverly Hillbillies, My Three Sons, and Andy Griffith. Everyone I know can sing the BH words. And that whistling on Andy Griffith? Classic.

Grasshopper Green 03-04-2005 03:34 PM

Cheers was the first one to pop into my head. I also loved the Animaniacs one.

Also, the theme to Sanford and Son. It was so groovy and catchy.

boom29 03-04-2005 04:42 PM

Fresh Prince of Bel Air - one of the few intros I know by memory.
Anamaniacs - Why doesn't anybody show reruns of this show?
The O.C. - Californiaaaa...homer pick, I live in the OC.
CSI and CSI Miami - pretty cool

Booray 03-04-2005 05:58 PM

CHiPs

Gotta love the funky bassline and the chintzy keyboard effects.

I really like Randy Newman's theme song for Monk, but I also really liked the jazzy guitar-driven theme song they had the first season for the show.

Grasshopper Green 03-04-2005 06:14 PM

We're Animaniacs! We've got baloney in our slacks! Yakko packs away the snacks while Bill Clinton plays the sax, we're Animaniacs!!!

I'm sorry, I've had it stuck in my head since I first posted in this thread.
