They Came from Toho: Godzilla and the Kaiju Eiga
The local independent theater is holding a Godzilla Film Festival here in NYC. Some new prints and some new films that haven't been shown on the US shores in theaters. Hopefully interest will help bring it to other theaters around the country.

Destroy all Monsters is fun for the all-star cast, but my favorite would be a tossup between Godzilla vs. Mothra (the tiny Mothra chicks!) and Godzilla vs. Monster Zero. I've got a soft spot for Gamera too, even though he ain't a Toho monster.

Definitely Godzilla vs. Monster Zero. Damn those extraterrestrials! (Planet-Xians?)

Though not really a 'monster' movie, Matango (Attack of the Mushroom People), was also made by the director of the early Gojira films, Inoshiro Honda.
I saw it on TV when I was about 6 - some 35 years ago. The memory of its dark fungal creepiness, which scared me more than any fire-breathing nuke spawn, has stuck with me ever since. I finally found and bought a copy of it, and though the bootleg print isn't very good quality, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it again after so long. |
