Horror challenge: give me a good scary movie recommendation!
 

I'm bored with horror movies. The genre has totally been pissing me off lately because it seems that no matter what comes out, if it claims to be "horror", it utterly sucks and seems to cater to 13 year olds (like The Ring).

Does anyone have any good recommendations?

I love stuff like Evil Dead, Return of the Living Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original), The Shining, and the Night of the Living Dead trilogy (the remakes were good too).

The Exorcist was boring to me, so don't recommend that or anything like it :)

I want something hardcore terrifying. Something that really makes you feel scared... something that will make an impact, and more importantly, something that will give me a creepy feeling if I watch it in the dark.

So far, the only things in the entire history of entertainment that have been able to scare me are: Silent Hill 2 and Doom 3. Maybe Resident Evil remake for GameCube, but after the first 2, it seems kinda dumbed down.

In other words: I want pure, raw horror. It can even be an older movie, just as long as it's truly HORROR.

I've really been scratching my head at this and researching movies for a while, and I'm just at a loss. For example, Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things... I don't know whether to see that or not because IMDB rates it as a 4.2, which means it's not really good at all.

I normally trust IMDB, but looking at http://imdb.com/chart/horror makes me laugh. There isn't ONE movie in their top 20 that's horror to me with the exception of The Shining. The rest of em are jokes. Silence of the Lambs? Nice crime movie, not scary. Alien? Good sci-fi, wouldn't call it horror. Jaws? Hahaha... that's about as scary as Jurassic Park :o

And nothing PG-13 :D

Bah I'm 22 and found The Ring scary as hell. Other than that though I haven't been scared by a movie since I was really young, so I got nothing.

Regarding the IMDB list, I'll admit some of them are pretty weak, but for out and out horror, you might want to take a look at Repulsion. Watch it late at night in the dark. It's pretty messed up.

But in regards to IMDB, the ratings are junk. Brain-dead 13 year olds. The "discussion" forums are even worse.

My friends used to go on and on when I was younger about a movie called Beyond The Door..said it was the scariest thing they'd ever seen....I looked it up...kinda sounds like Rosemary's Baby.

Check out Ju-On (The Grudge), it's been remade by an American studio with the original Japanese director too.

The original is fucking freaky and disturbing, excellent acting and just plain creepy. You've got to see it if you're a fan of horror flicks.

I've thought hard about this, but I've drawn a blank. The only movie that I can think of that scares me is Jaws, and that's only because I saw it when I was 5, so it was kind of traumatic and whatnot. I can recommend a film that will leave you sick to your stomach at it's brutality thought (atleast, that's what it did to me). Check out Cannibal Holocaust. Pretty realistic gore effects, and they actually kill animals onscreen, including a monkey whose brain is eaten, and a turtle which is gutted and cooked. It's a bit disturbing to think that they killed these animals for a movie. In general, it's just a mean spirited movie with no likable characters.

Yeah Susperia is good horror. There's an edited version that's not as good though. I'm not sure if the 'Standard Edition' DVD is edited or not.

man, you have some tough criteria for movies. I swear you have to watch horror movies alone to really get scared, otherwise, you'll probably just laugh them off.

"The Thing" is a pretty good staight up horror flick, though not terrifying. I like the Kurt Russell version. Horror movies don't seem able to terrify anymore...they go too much for the gross-out. The real scary shit nowadays seems to be in the psychological/thriller type film.

Stephen King movies weren't terrifying, but they did the job.


Mother's Day - This came out when I was still in high school, so figure on 80 or 81 - I remember coming home from this movie, and where I parked my car was in the barn about 150 yards from my parents house. A very dimly lit 150 yards.. I think I sprinted it in less than 10 seconds... Scared the shit out of me.

AFI's list of 100 Thrillers, isn't all about horror movies, but it's got some good ones on the list...

Without question...no doubt...unbelievably...the scariest movie I have ever watched...

"Haunting of Hill House" made in 1963 with Julie Harris and Russ Tamblyn. NOT the piece of shit remake in 1999. It's based on the damned creepy Shirley Jackson novel.

The only caveat I can give you, though, is that you must bring your imagination with you. This is NOT a passive experience, and the ghosts are only heard and never seen.

I guess I have the same guidelines as you do, I didn't find the ring scary at all.
The first few Hellraisers were good in that sense.
I'd also recommend the traditional, Halloweens, Nightmare on Elm street, and Friday the 13th series.
Cube was alright as long as you let yourself get into it

Stephen Kinds IT- but that one only freaks me out cause it scared me as a kid.

I saw IT for the first time since I was a kid a few days ago and it simply failed to scare me because I smiled every time I saw Tim Curry ;)

The silence of the lambs set of movies i found to be kinda scarry. They are more like thriller/horror movies. But the best horror movies I have seen are the lepracon, camono (probally misspelled), dawn of the dead original, re-animator, Lord of Illusions, and night of the demons.

If you are bored with American Horror. I recommend Itailian Horror. Susperia is a good one, but look for a director called Lucio Fulci.

New York Ripper is a good flick.

Event Horizon scared the crap outta me the first time I saw it. Other than that, nothing really scares me anymore, unless my girlfriend tells me she's pregnant... I'd be terrified...

Agreed on Event Horizon. Isolation is a pretty scary thing, and it's a great horror element.

John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness also scared the bejeezus out of me.

I think I'm the only one who wasn't scared by Even Horizon...just seemed like a sci-fi space thriller to me...I didn't find anything really all the scary about it though...maybe a little creepy at times.

Event Horizion is definatly worth a watch, the effects are rather creepy. Good flick

One good movie is the 70's Legend of Hell House with Roddy McDowell. It's got a very good eerie feel to it. Not a jump out and grab you scary but it's damn good at giving your the creeps.

Hmmm... Do you want just zombie movies? The Italian horror movies are supposed to do that as well as anybody. Also check out their cannibal movies.
I haven't seen it since I was about 8, but the asylum stuff in Jacobs Ladder was really creepy.

On video games, if you liked Doom III, you should check out the old (1998?) game System Shock II. The first time I saw/heard the midwives I almost cried like a school girl.

Maybe it's just me but I loved 28 Days Later (although the theatrical ending was cheesy, the alternate ending on the dvd is perfect)

I've seen a good portion of them, well, the more famous ones like Gholies, IT (all Stephen King), Event Horizon (more sci-fi though), but will definitely check out some of the recommended Italian horror flicks.

Psycho was alright for a thriller/suspense, but I don't know if I'd classify that as horror.

Susperia looks very interesting, as does Session 9 (from the thread you just linked, iamtheone)

Session 9 was horrible in my mind. It knows how to creep you out, but fails to deliver overall. And the fact that the main actor gains and loses his fake Scottish accent throughout the movie makes it even more unbelieveable. :lol: :rolleyes:
