Buying an IMPORT Anime? You got Experience?

I am thinking about buying a few ANIME sets. Escaflowne & Evangelion. In the US they run about 200 bucks and 130. Thats a bit much for me.

Searching around a little online, I was able to find IMPORT sets for about 50 bucks each on half.com (no site plug here, just trying to find out some info :P ) These DVDs have the entire series AND they all ALL region coded....

My question is...

Do I lose out on sound and picture quality buying the import?
Are these "illegal" copies...if so I won't buy them.

If you have experience buying import DVDs..please post and let me know....

Thanks!!

Trust me, It's happened to me before, don't buy it. I know the temptation is strong but resist. If you really want it buy it somewhere legit.

From what I paid for imported anime, I can say for sure 50 for Eva and Escaflowne mean they are illegal chinese copies.

www.cdjapan.co.jp and www.amotokyo.com should give you an idea of what it costs to import legit anime.

Well, let me take another side to this. I accidentally bought what probabaly is an illegal Chinese box set of every Studio Ghibli movie up until Monoke Hime. I say accidentally because I SWORE it was legit. And from Japan.
As it stands, however, it was done very professionally. VERY professionally. I've watched half of it, and the subs are all very well done Plus it even has some extras! The same with a Spirited Away DVD I bought last year!
Bootlegs, but quality ones! So, do a little research first.

Why are they illegal copies if they are from China? Excuse my ignorance, but that is why I am asking the questions before I buy.

I thought these are "legit" asian versions with Japanese language and chinese/english subtitles.

I'll check out the links USERNAME gave...keep the info coming..thanks.

even if they arne't illigal dupes, there is the whole region thing. ie you CAN'T play a DVD that is sold outside your region.

Almost any anime with english/chinese subtitles that are imported and under about 30-50 USD per Disc are illegal. It's very easy to get the raw files from a satellite, and translate them, then run through DVDSP or something and athour a DVD. After that you can make as many copies, or get the fanciest gatefold boxes ever.. If it's region 0 it's generally fake.
