great movies you never want to see again
over the past few days, I've been able to download and watch Mystic River and 21 Grams. Found both to be very good movies with outstanding acting performances. Sean Penn is his usual stellar self in both, while Naomi Watts continues her rise to the top of the game in 21 Grams, and Tim Robbins plays as haunted a character as I've ever seen in Mystic River. If you are a fan of great acting, I strongly recommend both films.
so anyway, here's the problem. Ive got both of these films sitting on the old hard drive and just cant seem to pull the trigger on burning them to disc. as good as they were, I just dont think I ever want to see either again. the subject matter in both is so depressing, and the acting so believeable, that I just cant see subjecting myself to the gutwrenching emotion of either of them again. another film that I thought was tremendous, but felt that one viewing was enough is Gangs of New York, though for different reasons. so, what great movies do you never want to see again? why? |
Well that's a first, someone who don't want to see a great movie again. I always wanted to see any great movie again...only the shitty ones that makes me not want to see them again...

The Ring
I was totally freaked out the first time I watched it, I mean seriously messed up, and I think if I watch it again it will lessen the impact. It's like watching cartoons from when you were a kid nowadays, they just aren't as good as you remember, and I'd rather that didn't happen. |
Requiem for a Dream.
Anyone who has seen it knows what Im talking about. |
All of the films mentioned are certainly not films you want to watch every day for the rest of your lives, but never say never. I can certainly imagine watching these films again in a few years time.
|
Se7en. That film was so good and so wrong.
|
dancer in the dark
|
ugh, id say requiem as well, but only because its lauded as such a great film. personally, i didnt much like it at all, didnt really challenge me at all, just placed a sense of unease for the entire film. its like watching gangster movies like Scarface and Goodfellas, you know the protagonist will meet his end somehow and that it won't be peaceful, so why are people so entertained with watching human life decline? (i will say that requiem was excellently shot, acted, directed, and produced; the storyline is what i dont understand about its supposed greatness)
|
The first two that came to mind were Requiem for a Dream and Dancer in the Dark, but since they've both been said I'll go for... Schindler's List.

In The Bedroom.
I've watched Requiem For a Dream a few times, and rather than being freaked on repeat viewings, I find myself increasingly bored. |
I thought The Pianist was very good, but I couldn't sit through it again.

I feel like a kid saying this...
I'd have to chime-in with the southpark move. I never really watched TV (1-2 hours a month) but have started watching those sort of cartoons latley 'cause my GF really likes them. I watched it lastnight for the first time, it was pretty funny, but there's no way in hell I'd be able to sit through it again. |
"The Passion" Ya know, the Mel Gibson movie.
Very moving and important to me, but I DON'T want to see it, again. Uhg. BB |
Summer blockbusters and other huge movies usually do that for me.
Spiderman, Daredevil, Van Hellsing, Independence Day, and The League of Extrordinary Gentlemen. All are great movies, but if I saw them again, I would be bored. |
Lawrence of Arabia. It's a great movie and really gutsy for the time, but for one thing it's so long, and for another I really doubt I'd pick up anything that I missed on the first viewing. I'm tempted to add The Great Escape too, but now that I reflect on it I might like to see that again someday.

Requiem For a Dream. Two times was enough, but what a great film....

Resevoir Dogs. It would probably be boring now that I know the ending.
|
Silence of the Lambs
|
Dogs of War.
|
Another vote for Requiem For a Dream
|
There's a lot of movies i feel this way about. Jacob's Ladder i think is at the top of my list.
|
Pulp Fiction. Loved the movie, quote stuff from it, have the soundtrack. Saw it once at the theater and thats it.
Oh, and what was the one with the serial killers with juliet lewis and woody harrelson? Great movie. Never saw it again or had the urge to. |
I agree with Jacob's Ladder.
Johnny Got His Gun -- great movie, extremely painful subject matter (blind, deaf war vet with no arms or legs phantasizes endlessly in his hospital bed). Moulin Rouge -- great movie, but total overkill. They packed so much singing, dancing, and spectacle into that thing that I was literally exhausted by the time it was over. Most Spielberg movies. Even the great ones are one-trick ponies. The second time around, you notice how superficial everything is beneath the flash, splash, and loud noises. |
"Seven Samurai". Over rated as all get out, and 3 1/2 hours long. If they make a 90 minute version of it, call me...
|
I think Requiem takes the cake.
|
Schindler's List
American History X |
The Last Samurai - too violent for me
Seabiscuit - too long Road to Perdition - way depressing Gangs of New York - too violent Empire - way intense and sad The Red Violin - the mystery is the whole point Mystic River - ^ Ocean's Eleven -^ Ladykillers - not that great The Ring - ^ fearDotcom - ^ Cold Mountain - had to see it for class, way too long and sad |
Ichi the Killer and Irreversible.

8 MM, I needed to take a power wash after that, and clean my house, good movie, but you feel like you've been dragged through so much filth at the same time.
|
Gone With The Wind. Holy cow, could that have been any longer? Maybe it would help if I saw it again without the (benefit|detraction) of trying to get a girl to make out with me, but I just don't have any interest.
Other films that make the list are the movies from the 60s and 70s that are supposed to be so poignant, but fall down over the generation gap. Movies like Urban Cowboy, Valley of the Dolls, Easy Rider, and possibly even The Graduate. |
Lets see, I never want to see Gone with the Wind again either. I hated Black Beauty. Any movie of Romeo and Juliet isnt worth seeing. Also any movie they show in HighSchool.
|
Saving Private Ryan
I liked it, I just don't think it will ever have the power of when I saw it on the big screen again. The landing scene...shudder. |
Passion of the Christ...its the only movie that ever affected me, but I came out of the theatre physcially hurting, great great movie but I"ll never watch it again.
and Schindlers list |

it was good, but man is it long... |
Beavis and Butthead do America.

Saw the complete Deer Hunter yesterday, and boy is my azz numb!
The good parts aren't worth watching this marathon again. |
