Official Amazing Race Thread (Spoilers will ensue)

Who saw amazing race last night. This is gonna be the first season where I am going to try and watch the whole series, I never had time in previous years.

I must say it looks like fun and entertaining. The fact that teams are breaking down and bickering like crazy during the very first leg of the race just fortells some magnificent scraps to come.

A couple of observations and random questions:-

Who wants the awesome looking twins to stay in the race till the end?

Who takes a midget on a RACE?!? Must be for the comedy factory.

Who think Alison (of former Big Brother fame) is a hillarios control freak and probably wears leather and whips Donny the boyfreind?

Who thinks Donny is just gonna snap one of these days?

highthief 07-07-2004 07:46 AM

I think the Amazing Race is probably the best Reality Show out there. It's usually smart and well crafted. My only gripe about it is that it is often on relatively late (for those of us who have to be up at 5 AM!)

Daval 07-07-2004 07:49 AM

TiVo is your freind.

Derwood 07-07-2004 08:03 AM

I've watched the last 2 seasons and really enjoy the show.

No team has really endeared themselves to me yet. I really like the circus clowns two years ago and the air traffic guys as well. So at this point, I'm not really rooting for anyone yet.

I really like the Amazing Race. It is always interesting to see the different parts of the world, and unlike survivor, it is isn't boring 99.9 percent of the time. Most of the time it is pretty intense

I honestly have no clue. When I watch her run I want to kill myself. They really think she will make it the entire time?

Oh god I hope so.

I think he will, I think there will be lotsa fights.

philosopherking 07-07-2004 09:47 AM

It usually takes awhile for me to warm up to one of the teams, it's hard to tell what they're like from just one episode. Did anyone else find it funny when the little person kept talking about how she could do anything anyone else can, maybe even better, and then she had to be pulled along by her partner when they were running towards the cars at the very begining? She may have some advantages that others don't, but there are definitly some things that she cannot do as well.

highthief 07-07-2004 10:58 AM

I agree the midget is a strange choice. She is welcome to try, just not sure she's the best candidate for a race liek this.

BonesCPA 07-07-2004 12:10 PM

The short-person aspect is interesting, but other than being a slower runner, I think she is the better competitor. She carried the side of beef without whining the whole time.

And if Donny and Alison are still in the race at the end, I think there will be domestic disturbance calls within weeks of the end of the race.

I do agree, she is a lot stronger than her partner - I respected her after the whole side-of beef thing. When I saw her run though I did burst out into laughter - my wife got all mad at me, but I just found it hillarious.

Her 'cousin' is kinda hot too. With her hair up in that tight white shirt with the bloodstains? I dunno - kinda erotic :)

Fremen 07-07-2004 12:27 PM

Awesome season start!

Did you feel a twinge go through your leg, like I did, when they described the older guy's wound? *cringe* Tough bastard. :D

I'd take the little cousin over her whiny cousin any day.
I laughed when they walked right past the butcher. :p

Wtf is Alison doing still on tv??? :o

dirtyrascal7 07-07-2004 12:29 PM

i'm interested to see how the "yield" will play into strategy this season. i'm kind of confused on how it works, though... can you only make teams yield which are behind you? or can you choose a team that is already past the yield point? also, does this mean they won't have any "fast forwards" this season?

thespian86 07-07-2004 01:12 PM

Last year on big brother I watched it with a passion just because Allison "turns my crank"... now that shes on this :D:D:D:D:D:D Good stuff kids, good stuff...

/pigish rant

Looks good. I really think its super cool that the little person wants to prove something but going in a race with a set of twins that look like professional long distance runners isn't the place to do it. I think it sucks that the old guy busted up his knee but the daughter is a great support.

Now, on to the bickering. I predict this year that there will be so much fighting that you wince.

I predicted Ally and Donno to win it because well...

Whats with the Yield?

Hot or not, she is definitely annoying.

It looks like the yield can only be used for someone who is behind you at that point. If you are in first at given point, I don't think you can be forced to wait. It could be interesting if they put a yield at a point where someone needs to catch a plane or boat, and it causes them to miss the departure...

mystmarimatt 07-08-2004 09:34 AM

I loved the couple that are models, they just kept doing stupid stuff. That's quality television right there.

Can't wait till they start getting all "Jesus-y" on people

onetime2 07-08-2004 10:25 AM

Anybody want to bet that there will be a task where the little person's size is advantageous?

I didn't get to watch the whole thing but I do like the show. Who got eliminated (if anyone)?

Derwood 07-08-2004 11:25 AM

The first one's eliminated were Spoiler: Dennis and Erika

A couple of comments:

The father-daughter team is screwed. That wound will keep opening up. It will probably get infected too.

I loved the team with the little person. They speak 6? languages between them. I loved it when the little woman said "Put the meat on my shoulders!" She's a badass. (Though If they made it to the final leg, they would be easily defeated in the final sprint).

The twin women and the big brother couple were obnoxious. I wanted them to lose, but if they stay on, they will make the show more interesting.

BonesCPA 07-14-2004 06:21 AM

Well, all of the Big Brother fans rooting "for" Donny and Allison can relax now. From first to last, that takes some effort.

It is starting to get interesting in that there is no predictability on who will make a mistake and cost them major time. I was annoyed that everyone was able to recoup their time by making the ferry (although I thought the cousins were going to be left behind - damn human nature of pitying the disadvantaged.)

Daval 07-14-2004 06:51 AM

I was totally shocked and actually quite pleasently suprised that the cousins made second place - the two of them are hopeless!

Who else REALLY REALLY wanted to see the midget chase the cows?

Alison and Donny leaving was a bit of a dissapointment, watching their constant bickering and love-hate relationship is quite amusing and I'll certainly miss that.

I like how Chip got into the scrap with the twins. He did the right thing and cannot forget that this is a game for a pile of cash. No mr. nice guy.

That happens on every leg of the race. They always get bunched up at the airport or train station. Just makes it so one team isn't a day ahead after 4 legs.

That makes sense, but I wouldn't mind seeing one team a day behind. If it happened early enough, it would make the remaining teams work that much harder.

I did, until I realized that she would have been trampled. Although part of me hoped that the other cousin would have suffered that fate. I can't wait for the little cousin to slap the big cousin for being a whiner.

I think that they both over do it in the whining department. The little one always talks about how she can do everything just as well as anyone else, but then she has to go and pitty people into giving them rides. I understand that you gotta do what you can to stay in the game, but for the love of god just admit the fact that you have shortcomings and get over yourself.

Derwood 08-11-2004 06:14 AM

Well, with 5 of the 11 teams eliminated, it's time to handicap the field and figure out who we think has the best shot. I'll rank the team in what I think is the order of most likely to win to least likely to win and why:

1. Colin and Christie: Even though they ruffle the feathers of Charla and Mirna, they seem to have their heads on straight. They've come in first the last 2 legs, and despite the producers' efforts to make us think that the couple is dysfunctional, I think they are smart and fit enough to make it to the final three, where their youth and brains could make them the big winners.

2. Chip and Kim: Though their ages might put them at a slight disadvantage over the younger teams, they have one big advantage: They are having a great time. These guys never fight amongst themselves, and Chip seems to be having the time of his life. Add to that that he is easily the strongest physically among the remaining men, and you could easily see this team win it all.

3. Nicole and Brandon: I think these guys are rather boring, but I'm starting to believe that they aren't as vapid as they first appeared. And when God is rooting for you, you can't lose, right?

4. Charla and Mirna: Ok, I've been rooting against this team from the first episode, mostly because I think the tall one is evil. But their whole "the world is against us and we have to prove them wrong" mantra seems to be getting them farther than I ever thought (or wanted) them to. I still hope they go down in flames.

5. Kimmi and Karli: No team who is this dumb and fights this much is capable of winning the race. Ok, that's not true, as Floe and Zach won a few season's ago. Still, these girls don't even understand the clues when they read them. I have a feeling that a savvy team could easily eliminate these guys by sending them in the wrong direction somewhere.

6. Linda and Karen: These girls have moxie and are definitely smart, but you can't keep coming in 2nd to last and hope to hang around long. Somewhere along the line, I foresee a roadblock or detour that is going to get the best of these ladies. They are still fun, and I'd rather see them win over 1/2 the other teams in the race.

BonesCPA 08-11-2004 08:20 AM

I have to agree with your standings. Although the producers do whatever they can to keep it close (see:let team with 7 hour lead leave 6.5 hours before the first challenge can be performed.), the teams do have a tendency to fall into the same order.

Derwood 08-17-2004 06:57 AM

So who goes tonight? I'm betting the bowling moms. Unless it's another stupid "non-elimination leg". I hate those. I would rather they have 4 more teams if they want 4 extra episodes. Non-elimination is teh suck.

brianna 08-17-2004 08:06 AM

i think there's a good chance that dumb+twin or dwarf+bitch could fuck up at anytime and be eliminated -- both teams seem to have been living on luck from the begining

BonesCPA 08-17-2004 11:42 AM

The best part of last week's show was when Charla was yelling at Mirna to move quicker. Part of me wants them gone now, while another part of me wants them around a little longer so I can yell at the TV more.

Right, my wife thinks they are "inspiring", but i've hated them since day 1. But you have to let the team you hate stick around a long time, or else the show is boring.

BonesCPA 08-18-2004 05:34 AM

I was worried that losing team and 1/2 might have made things less interesting. But at this point I think we are now left with teams with a real chance to win (at least almost all of them).

My wife and I came close to celebratory sex we were so happy that we wouldn't have to deal with the continual whining.

Derwood 08-18-2004 06:20 AM

Yeah, I'm glad those two lost. Well, the little person was fine, it was her cousin that I'm glad to see gone. She was delusional about how people treated her. And why, after the first food road block of having to eat 1kg of caviar, did she make the little person eat AGAIN for the Ostrich Egg? Yeah, let's have the person with a stomach the size of a 6 year old do another eating challenge. Great strategy.

GO CHIP AND KIM!

So true, so true, Der.
The best part about watching the egg-eating experience for me was watching that petulant idiot Colin, lose two eggs, almost lose his lunch trying to choke down his lunch, and then lose all that time. :p

I'll miss Charla, but Mirna can take a long walk off a short pier.

Derwood 08-24-2004 09:46 AM

I'm guessing tonight's episode is going to be "non-elimination". They have 3 such legs left and only 5 teams (with the final episode being the final 3 teams), so you figure the non-elimination's will be every other week from here on out

Derwood 08-25-2004 01:13 PM

And I was right. good episode though.

Church 08-25-2004 01:21 PM

Yeah, I was laughin pretty hard when Colin almost got arrested. He had no respect for the people and their culture, he was ignorant and an asshole. I think $100 for a 2 hour cab ride is pretty damn decent if you ask me. He needs an attitude check, and Christie defintely needs to find someone new. I have a feeling she's only still with him out of fear for leaving him.

If I were the local police, I would have detained him for public mischeif when he just threw the money. And I've got a funny feeling they didn't take him in the back and beat the crap out of him was because there was an American camera on them.

And go Chip and Kim! Chip is an awsome guy, and I really hope that couple wins.

Totally, I think they're the best people on the show.

I was sort of supporting Colin and his girlfriend, but after Colin's hissy-fit on Tuesday, I could care less about them. That was so immature and ignorant.

And definitely abusive. I was leaning towards them up until that point. I understand trying to fight for the extra $50, especially since they had three hours to kill, but there is a point where you cross the line from standing up for yourself to being a jerk. He crossed that line early on.

At this point I am rooting for the mom's. No matter how bad they do, they seem to pull things out. And I bet they cook a mean meatloaf.

Fremen 08-26-2004 02:20 PM

I wonder if it was Colin's idea to stop for the Moms on the side of the road, or the cab drivers.

brianna 08-26-2004 02:54 PM

dude if there had not been a tv show and a camera guy involved colin would be having his ass beat on a daily basis in some prison in africa.

in my dream version of the hsow christi would have dumped his ass on live TV.

(also: nevermind the twins can anyone tell christie and nichole apart?)

BonesCPA 09-01-2004 06:06 AM

Damn, it is so annoying that this was not an elimination round. And double damn that they didn't shave their heads. When they first mentioned the head shaving I was rooting for the "models" to take the plunge. And I thought the incessant whining would end with the demise of Charla and Mirna. "People are staring at me." Boo f-ing hoo.

And am I the only one who thinks that all of the first place prizes that Colin and Christie win are going to be split between them evenly when she finally gets a backbone and dumps him.

(Bad night - needed to rant.)

Derwood 09-01-2004 10:49 AM

I'm still cheering hardest for Chip and Kim, with the Bowling Mom's second. The other 3 teams annoy in various ways.

Fremen 09-01-2004 09:26 PM

Half of the Mom's team is annoying as hell. (especially the high-pitched whine.)
I can't figure out which half, though.

I too, was disappointed the models didn't shave, but I was more annoyed by their religious remarks throughout the race. (it's like they were trying too hard to sell it to us)

When are the producers gonna quit getting their rocks off by sending these women on crappy overcrowded 3rd world conveyances to be fondled by every hairy-assed local letch?

(you likey my long-assed sentence?) ;)

Go C&K!

Thank you. I didn't want to think I was the only one with that mindset. I can appreciate you having faith, but the Lord did not keep you in this game - the producers did.

brianna 09-03-2004 08:06 AM

ok, a little defense of the models -- normally christian+models is a recipe for me to hate you -- but honestly brandon and nichole have grown on me. the're relationship actually seems pretty healthy (especially when viewed in the harsh light of "colin and chirsti") and they seem to genuinely care about one another. though i am an atheist and (some might say) hyper-sensitive to people trying to convert me i don't get that vibe at all from brandon and nichole. In fact, it often seems that the've somehow found the best of christianity -- they use it to prop each other up and to find acceptance in their situation ("we are where god wants us to be" instead of "we were screwed!" or "this is all your fault you bitch" (shut up colin)). i wanted to hate them from the beginning but the best i can do is occasionally roll my eyes in a good natured way, they seem like a caring couple.

in other news: ain't no way i would shave my head either -- i can't much blame them, especially since without hair both would have a hard time making a living as models (imagine if someone temporarily took away your ability to do you job.).

p.s. yes i'm still rooting for chip and kim.

http://www.tcn.zaq.ne.jp/ako/muscle/tyson2.jpg

Excception to the rule, obviously, but it can be done. Her situation is a little different. My point is that by not doing it, they showed that they don't have the killer instinct - as far as the game goes. If you want to win, you have to be willing to go for it.

That being said, as long as Colin and Christie don't win, I'll probably be satisfied with the result.

brianna 09-04-2004 02:06 PM

i think it's a bit naive to imply that either of their careers (to whatever extend they have modeling careers) would be unchanged by shaving their heads. Fact is that models have to meet a ridiculous set of socially imposed standards for looks -- honestly i think most of them are ridiculous and the entire beauty industry rubs me the wrong way -- but reality is that white models under the age of 50 in america have hair (in fact almost all female models have hair though i believe there's are some exception -- mostly black women). also, as a woman a lot of stock is placed in ones hair and shaving it off would be MUCH more difficult for her then for him.

If your standards for killer instinct is "willing to do anything regardless of cost to your life outside of the race" then sure, they don't have it -- but i'd argue that the only people who do have it are jackholes like colin.

BonesCPA 09-04-2004 02:19 PM

The two things I was trying to suggest is that he could find plenty of work with a shaved head - a lot of men can pull that look off. She was the one who made a big deal about his hair being his "look" and it would cost him work. Sure, she would be out of work for a while, but that leads into my next point.

If you are going to play this game, you have to either be willing to play it all the way, or expect to leave early. I don't like Colin, and I think his a SOB. He does go all out for the competitions, but unfortunately it is at the expense of Christie. For that, I want him to lose - but I wouldn't be suprised to see them win. He does risk it all (and guaranteed both he and Christie would be bald right now if they went there first.)

Fremen 09-04-2004 03:01 PM

http://alltrek.torlanth.com/merchandise/10043682.jpg

brianna 09-04-2004 03:24 PM

ok, i'll grant that it's possible that the best way to win this race is to risk everything -- often those who have no care for anything but winning do in fact win -- but i have no desire to root for them.

i'm not going to continue the bald model talk cause i'ts rather pointless, no one can realistically argue that nichole could occontinue her beauty pagent career with a shaved head.

Fremen 09-04-2004 03:39 PM

I agree with you about her career being affected by her being bald.
I wasn't arguing, I was just posting one of my favorite pics of bald actresses. ;)

Go Chip and Kim! Boo Colin!

Derwood 09-08-2004 07:48 PM

Wow, I was sweatin' that episode out. I really didn't want to see Chip and Kim eliminated. The twins deserved to lose, picking the mud over the obviously faster rapids challenge. Say what you will about Colin and Christie, but they always make the right decisions and have consistently come in the top 3 all season long. I don't particularly like them, but wouldn't bet against them either.

my friend and i were discussing this last week -- sure, the're good at the race, the very well might win, assholes win in life all of the time. doesnt' mean i have to like it or respect them or in anyway root for them ;).

BonesCPA 09-14-2004 07:38 PM

Why do I get sucked in every time. I finally think that there going to kill off a team that I want to see gone, and they save them again. I was feeling sorry for Christie before tonight.

Gotta give it to the moms and Chip and Kim. Their gonna ride it until the end.

Troublebot 09-15-2004 05:56 AM

Watching Colin and Christie implode last night was wonderful. I know I'm going to hell for enjoying it so much, but I'll happily burn for all eternity. When Colin yelled, "My ox is broken!" I almost wet my pants.

However, all my fun ended when Phil told them it was a non-elimination round. WTF? These two deserve to be gone for all the nasty things they've said to the locals, the other contestants and each other. My only hope is that, with so much pressure on them, they continue their implosion next week on the two-hour finale.

Amen, brother. As the show started and they got on the first plane, I hated myself for changing my opinion on them. They have been consistently the most competitive team. I did get some pleasure over the yield and watching him start to boil. But when she went nuts and he actually had to calm her down, I lost any desire to see them advance.

Oh, and the ox thing was hilarious. Of course the producers should have made sure all of the oxes actually "worked".

A little more than 24 hours to go. So who you picking?

I want the moms to win, but I am picking Chip and Kim. Colin and Chrisite seem to be imploding by the second and the models just don't seem to have "something". As I have said before, as long as Colin and Christie don't win, I should be satisfied.

I'm still voting for Chip and Kim, they're rad, and seem like nice folks.

Here's the thing about the head-shaving incident: Models could've either shaved their heas, or not, and yet, either way, it makes for fucking awesome television, it could've been funny and ironic, or funny and so fitting. it was win-win.

Anyone want the Bowling Moms to win? hahaha

Yeah, but just for the underdog factor.

If it came down to them and C&C Dumbass Factory, I'd go with the former, but if it was the Moms vs Chip & Kim, C-K gets it.

Screw the pansy no-haircutting-models. :D

It would be nice to see Chip & Kim win it, although I think Colin & Christie will do it - although they are dysfunctional, they are the strongest team.

Imagine what would happen if they started working together cohesively?

Daval 09-22-2004 05:18 AM

Well, first of all, congratulations to Chip & Kim - the nice guys won!

Anyhow, my thoughts on the show:-

- Wasnt that comeback in the first leg by Colin/Christie just amazing? When I saw that I almost wished they won the million dollars, they were truly amazing.
- Who didnt forsee problems with baggage when they spent so much time subtely pointing out they were packing it up?
- Who was getting really annoyed with the constant god talk from Brandon?
- Who thinks Brandon is going to get dumped soon as his girlfreind isnt nearly as 'pure' as he is?

Well, if anyone didn't see it this morning, on the CBS Morning Show they had the major players all on. We got to meet the "Bowling Dads" and Chip and Kim got their check. And in the mode of all reality couples must apparently now follow, Colin proposed to Christie on live TV. Of course she accepted (a life of continued verbal abuse imo).

I was satisfied with the results, and although I dislike Colin, they were the most dominant participants. I am half disappointed that in a sense the worst remaining team got an advantage becuase they were so late in the competitions. Who'da thunk it would work out to their advantage to be so slow.

All I know is that AR6 starts soon. Not much down time. Now that's how you do a reality show.

When does the new season start? Seems I should be watching this show :)

Looks like it starts on Saturday. Cool!

I think that Saturday is just the repeat of last nights show.

New season probably wouldnt happen for a couple of months I would guess.

sherpahigh 09-22-2004 07:41 AM

Loved to see my hometown and one of my most frequented ski hills on the show. It was interesting to know how long the taxi rides and all that were and how long it would actually take snow-shoe up the mountain. That would of been a killer climb if they actually started where it looked like they did cause they ended up at the gates to one serious extrem ski area that's near the top of the mountain.

CBS is retarded. This is what I've learned. One spot of their website shows Amazing Race as airing on Saturday. Then it says that the Season Premire for the new season is on Thursday October 2nd at 8pm. Well, October 2nd is a Saturday. And Thursday is Survivor night.

Then here is the CBS fall schedule. Which shows that it's on Saturday. So umm... I guess I'm just going to have to keep my eyes open for it :)

Man, CBS sure does have some shitty programming...

mystmarimatt 09-22-2004 08:11 AM

Whoohoo! Yay for Chip and Kim! I would have been happy with them, or the models winning.

But the best part, the very BEST part...was the look of failure in Colin's eyes when they came in second. Goddamn, that was the most satisfying thing EVER. Shows cockbites don't always get what they want. HA!

bastard.

Great ending to a great race. :)

I think it's Saturday (although I was really surprised they didn't hype it on the finale). I think I read it in Entertainment Weekly and wrote it down on my calendar so I wouldn't miss it.

That's not too geeky, is it? :p

Averett 09-23-2004 10:32 AM

Nah, not too geeky ;) And yeah, I know with Survivor they hype the new season like crazy during their season finale episode. Weird.

I've read so many conflicting things on when the new show premiers. This Saturday, October 2nd, not until the beginning of November... Stupid CBS needs to get it together and figure out when the show is really airing!

BonesCPA 09-23-2004 10:50 AM

I just was reading in the newspaper (go figure) that they had planned to start Saturday October 2nd, but then realized that this is a ratings winner, and they didn't want to banish it to Saturday nights. They appear to be holding off on the premier of AR6 until they can find a weekday slot.

I live in Calgary too and spent 5 years living on the mountian at Sunshine Village, and what was most interesting to me was seeing all the stuff that was edited out of the show.

First, when they left the Calgary airport they got into a local Calgary Cab (Advance Cab Company), however when they arrived at the base of SSV, they were in a Cab from Banff Taxi (you could see the phone number on the rear fender). A cab ride from Calgary airport to SSV would be about 2 hours and would probably run the meter up to just over $100. I know from experience that Calgary to Nakiska is $45. So my question is, did they take a cab the whole way or was there an 'edited out' bus ride in the middle? Not because of the cost, a hundred bux isn't that much, just where did they change cabs?

Secondly. They didn't really walk that far. If you refer to my diagram below, you can see that they only walked a short distance from the top of the Angel Express Chair to the top of the Continental Divide Chair. I have walked it myself and it takes about 30 minutes to get up and about 5 minutes to (walk/slide on your ass) down.

Anyway, I just thought it was interesting to see what really happens on this show, how I have to wonder what else they are not showing me when they are in places I am not so familiar with.

Ya I was thinking about all that stuff too. I noticed the different cab and wondered if they swtched in Banff or what.

Thanks for pointing that out about the walk. I don't know why but I assumed that they got off the gondola and started the hike from the bottom of the Angel chair. But you're right, from the top of the chair it wouldn't be that bad.

I thought it was really interesting like you said to see something you're familiar with, puts it in perspective how the editing alters what it's really like quite a bit.
