Re: *Obscure Movie Recommendations*

Sadly I wasn't able to save it before the last board died, so if *anyone* happened to save all or part of it and could send it to me i'd be really grateful! Please PM me if so. Here are some cool ones: The Fearless Hyena -- oldschool Jackie Chan flick, and yup that's where I got my name. The kung fu is AMAZING and the comedy is utterly ridiculous!! It's a damn laugh riot! One of the greatest martial arts sleeper films. The Harder They Come -- My favorite movie of all time. It's cool on so many different levels. The music is incredible -- it was made during the time that reggae was still evolving. It's THE definitive movie on reggae music. But to me, the story behind it is even more powerful, it's about a guy who moves from the country to the city in search of a new life with the promise of opportunity and prosperity. He tries to make a record but is only confronted by countless forces working against him, people looking to take advantage of him. The only way he's able to gain fame and fortune is by turning gangster. It speaks volumes...check it out, they should have it at Blockbuster. Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels -- Brilliant film! Already mentioned above. If you liked Reservoir Dogs, you gotta check this out. These guys try to settle a gambling debt by stealing a shitload of weed and trying to sell it back to the guys they bought it from. One of the few DVDs I own. What Do You Say To a Naked Lady? -- 1969 movie by Allen Funt from Candid Camera...incredible film!! I can't recommend this one enough. If you're not doing anything tonite, go to the video store and rent it NOW!! :D Even with youre girlfriend/boyfriend, they won't find it offensive...It explores peoples perceptions of sexuality by filming their reactions to nudity in public and that sort of thing. Like a nude woman will roll up to someone and ask for directions...I don't know how to describe it really, but I'd recommend it to everyone! Double Indemnity -- Classic Billy Wilder film. It's OLD, but one of the best! Another one of the few movies I've actually ever bought. |
I don't know how well known The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys is. Several recognizable actors, with interspersed animated scenes by Todd McFarlane.
|
I'll just list them, I don't want to put a synopsis with each one.
Snatch Dobermann (French) Run Lola Run (German) Taxi (French) [to a lesser extent Taxi2] Memento Requiem For A Dream Pi Dog Soldiers Boondock Saints La Haine (French) Cube Brother (Parts in Japanese) Ringu + Ring 2(Japanese version) Transformers The Movie Anime wise: Akira Ghost In The Shell Princess Mononoke |
Holy Ressurection! Thanks, to whoever :)

I was going to mention Dog Soldiers and But I'm A Cheerleader but I got beat on those.
Anybody ever heard of Desert Blue? It's a tiny little movie about a kid who's trying to finish his dead fathers dream of a water park out in the middle of the desert. The plot is quirky and the acting is EXCELLENT by some of Hollywoods brightest youngsters. Here's a rundown of the stars. Casey Affleck Brendan Sexton III Kate Hudson Christina Ricci John Heard Ethan Suplee Sara Gilbert |
I have to ORDER anybody who hasn't seen it to go and rent, no BUY, "The Big Lebowski". I bought it after I had rented it 5 times, and realized it would be cheaper to own it.
Somebody said "Chopper", and I fully agree. Some Japanese flicks that are awesome: "Sharkskin man and Peach hip girl" -Has a gangster in a white leather suit going down on all four, 50 metres away from a cabin. He sniffs in the air, and says: "He's with a girl. She has just washed her hair. She's got her period". "Sonatine" Gangster realizes he's been taking life too seriously. "Hana-Bi" Beautiful film about a police officer who's wife is dying from cancer. He is in debt to the yakuza since he can't afford her treatment, and robs a bank to take her on holiday for the last time. "Tokyo Fist" Triangle drama. Boxer - Insurance salesman - Salesman's wife. Involves violence, self-piercing, boxing, and an extreme amount of self-loathing. |

Why are people listing "Amélie" and "Akira" as "Obscure movie Reference?" Stop it.
I wholeheartedly second "Cube," "Harold & Maude," "La Haine" and "Chopper." |
What about 'glengary glen ross' with an all stars cast: Al Pacino, Elex Balwin, kevin Spacek, Ed Harris, Jack Lemmon (in his best role ever). It is about a bunch of time share telemarketer who would anything to make a sale. Very sad.....

Probably one of the best made films I've ever seen, but if I ever have to see it again I'll have to kill myself: It's too intense for my poor mind. |
There is a really great Thai film called Bangkok Dangerous. i thought it was so good i bought it...(thats rare for me). another good film is a Korean film called Shiri... great action. One of my fav foreign films is a Japanese film called Afterlife, its super good! funny and sad, it made me cry.

Talk to Her and anything else by Almodovar.
The 10th Victim is awesome. |
I'll second that recommendation for Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky. The effects are so phony-looking yet so hideous at the same time... the movie also features a fat, iron-claw handed warden who keeps Tic-Tacs in his glass eye. It's one of the most unforgettable Kung-Fu movies I've ever seen (although that classification may be misleading- Ricky doesn't usually need to hit anyone more than once).
Five Deadly Venoms- great fight choreography, cool characters, and a plot that keeps you guessing until the end. Six String Samurai- A post-apocalyptic movie about a sword-swinging Buddy Holly as he battles cannibals, rockabilly Communists, and Death (in a Motley Crue wig and hat) on his quest to take over the late King Elvis' throne. |

Because most people I know have never heard of it. I don't think it's availible to buy or rent here, you have to import it. There was no cinema release here either. A lot of people know nothing about anime. It's possibly the most well known anime out there but fuck all people know about it. Hence, obscure movie reference. :D |
hey you cannot talk about Army of Darkness with out saying something about the prequels evil dead and evil dead 2 (same movie 2 had a little more money than 1 though)
|
I don't know if you'd consider it obscure, but one of my favorite movies is Being There wither Peter Sellers. It's a comedy, but it's sort of subtle. Not for everyone, but I laugh my butt off at it.

Shall We Dance? (1997)
From his seat on a commuter train, a respected but downtrodden Tokyo office worker espies a beautiful woman in the window of a dance studio. Mesmerized, he signs up for ballroom dance instruction at the school, despite the threat of losing face by participating in such an "undignified" public spectable. However, he soon discovers that he has a natural aptitude--and a natural love--for dancing, much to the dismay of his perplexed wife and daughter. ----- Great story and very likeable characters! |

Visitor Q
Dead or Alive: Hanzaisha Fudoh: The New Generation I'm a huge Takashi Miike fan. |
I kind of liked The Tao of Steve and eXistenZ, of course it's up to you guys to decide if those really count as obscure. Plus, as mentioned upthread, Run Lola Run and Free Enterprise are great!
|
Another Donnie Darko vote here
|
I'm gonna agree and say Battle Royale, too bad the buzz for the second one is less than stellar
Rashomon is awesome. If you've ever seen a movie that showed an event from the perspective of different characters, it's a throwback to this flick. Kind of like how Basic tried to be. Also Hard Boiled, The Killer, Ran, Yojimbo, Ichi the Killer...sorry to only recommend asian cinema, but I find those are the ones that draw the most blanks among my friends. |
just watched a movie that went straight to video called Dust produced by Lion's gate films... very good, not your typical western story.
|
La Haine
A French Indie film about a day in the lives of 3 friends the day after a riot. It won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival in '95. It's a brilliant film, I'd recommend it to anyone |
"Obscure" is a relative term. Some people called "Harold and Maude" obscure, and now it probably is. But it was a huge cult film in the '70s, almost as big as Rocky Horror for a while.
Of course I gotta laugh when I read these lists, not because they're not good films nor obscure, but because they're mainly less than 20 years old. There are a lot of great and obscure films from the 60s, the 70s, and especially the black-and-white era. When I was a kid, movies from 1940-1960 were all over the channels , and I got to see a lot of cool stuff. Now that stuff exists only on video, or in the vaults of Turner Classic Movies, when anyone cares to show it, and you all are missing out on a lot of off-trail stuff -- some well-known in its day, some always obscure. Some movies to look for in the dusty corners of your video store: Three Strangers -- a Humphrey Bogart movie without Bogie, but _with_ Petter Lorre and Sidney Greenstreet (the fat man). They don't even miss him. Murder, He Says. Black comedy from '43 about murderous hillbillies trying to off an insurance adjuster. Any horror movie fromVal Lewton and his disciples from the '40s and '50s: Cat People, The Body Snatcher (with Karloff), Curse of the Demon. The Loved One. Black comedy about death from '64. David Lynch has got nothing on these guys. Carnival of Souls, '62. What if you made a cheap ghost/haunting movie in your hometown in Kansas with 16mm film and dubbed sound and it was REALLY GODDAMN CREEPY? The President's Analyst, '68 or so -- kind of obscure now, but one of the best comedy/satires made in the last 40 years, and still pretty damn fresh. The part about being kidnapped by the Canadian Secret Service really makes me laugh. Dreamchild -- '80s Brit film about Lewis Carroll and the real person who was Alice in Wonderland. Great movie, actually, and also very spacey, complete with giant grotesque Muppets. Diva, '80s French new-wave movie that's all chase (except for the opera). Better than Run, Lola, Run in my opinion. The Lady Eve, or anything directed by Preston Sturges. He did great '40s comedies with lots of great dialog and stuff happening on the screen every minute. The first ten minutes of LE are a bloody scream, and the rest is nearly as good. Weekend in Havana. 1940s musical with Alice Faye that is absolutely surreal --- kind of a 90 minute technicolor music video. Absolute Beginners. The same, only made 30-odd years later in England starring David Bowie, with rock music. Repo Man -- shouldn't be obscure, but it is anymore. LA punks, radioactive dead aliens, car repossessors, a Chevy Malibu -- what more do you want? All the good old film noir from the '40s and '50s; great stuff, 'way more cynical than most things we have today, and with better gunfights and chases: D.O.A The Big Heat The Killers Kiss of Death Murder, My Sweet Phantom Lady Touch of Evil Grim Prairie Tales -- anthology of supernatural stories of the old west, told around the campfire by a bounty-hunting psycho played by James Earl Jones. Not all great, but nothing else like it. Local Hero, Comfort and Joy (Scottish comedies from the '80s, good stuff) Masque of the Red Death -- Edgar Allan Poe, Vincent Price, Roger Corman, Technicolor -- what's not to like? 1962 or so. |
Treed Murray
Very intense movie, I found the site for it accidentally while surfing the net and thought the idea of a movie about a guy stuck in a tree was interesting. Is a good movie, kind of hard to find though, I totally advise you guys to try and see it. |

Hmm lets see....here are a few DEFINATLEY worth seeing:
Amelie Trainspotting Memento The Rocky Horror Picture Show To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything Donnie Darko About a Boy ....to name the ones off the top of my head |
I'm going to second those who recommended 'The Quiet Earth', 'City of God' and 'Schizopolis'.
Happiness is a very good character with some of the most fucked up characters imaginable. Watch with an open mind, very black humour. 'Naked Lunch', anyone? Any movie that involves a giant cockroach that talks out of its arse has to be good... 'Crime 101' ain't bad, good independant Kiwi film about a bunch of uni students who get in way over their heads... |
If you liked Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, you might want to check out "Where the Buffalo Roam", it's an older move starring Bill Murray about the life & times of Hunter Thompson, the main character of F&L..lots of strnageness.
Also, "Attack of the Mushroom People" It's an old Japaneese horror movie, about a group that get's shipwrecked, and is forced to eat "foreign" mushrooms that turn them into...mushroom people (it sounds corny, and it is in large part, but it's also a cool look at how the Japaneese view outside influence) On the animated front, "Graveyeard of the Fireflies" is one of the best films I've seen in a long while. Very upsetting story of two homeless children in Japan during WWII. Not your traditional anime, by any stretch of the imagination. Finally, I've heard of, and had recommended (but haven't seen) the Japaneese version of the Ring. It's supposedly better/scarier than the american version. Saw it at an anime convention I went to, but didn't pick it up..damn. |
Most of mine have already been said but a few werent:
Project A (Jackie Chan) Dragons Forever (Jackie Chan) The Castle (Aussie film) Castle of cagliostro (Manga) The great Muppet caper (Muppets) The muppet movie (Muppets) Gladiator (The proper one with cuba gooding jr) Escape to Victory (Football/war movie with micheal Cane and Sly Stalone) Star trek: First Contact (Any star trek will be considered obscure due to the stigma associated with star trek fans) Willow (Fantasy film with Val kilmar) MAd Max beyond the Thunderdome (Mel Gibson) Two Hands (Heath Ledger) Starship troopers ( I seem to be the only one who liked it) Hercules Returns (one of the funniest films ever) Superstar (Molly Shannon) Best of the best (old school martial arts film) Blazing Saddles (Old school Mel Brooks film) Memphis Belle (old war movie) Fantasy Men ( Because Im in it) They Call me Bruce ( old school martial arts satire) In retrospect there is a hell of alot more than I had previously thought... |
I forgot Empire records with Renee Zellweger and Liv Tyler before they were famous.

Unless I missed it, I can't believe there were no mentions of
"They Live" and "Hell Comes to Frogtown" Two classics with former WWF wrestler "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. "They Live" has the best line ever. "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass...and I'm all out of bubblegum." |
Rodney... great list of Film Noir titles... I am a huge fan of this genre (if you can call it that).
My addition to the obscure titles that must be seen is George A Romero's vampire film "Martin". One of the most underrated vampire films of all time. |
Have to agree with PI and Lola Rennt.
Office Space is alright to. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas |
Movie i saw not to long ago.
Manic. Was very moving and reminded me of childhood days with my buddies. :< Needless to say it wasnt very pleasant. |
Is that the film Maniac where the killer takes women's scalps and puts them on maniquins?
If so, very twisted film. |
No not at all. Its about a boy dealing with anger control in a half way home. With other kids with similar problems to deal with.
Its more of a story telling film then some crazy killer movie :> And its Manic :> not Maniac. |
Mars Attacks!
It kind of pokes fun at B sci-fi, but never in a snobbish sort of way. I saw this just the other day and was surprised at how many famous actors are in it. jack nicholson, natalie portman, glenn close, jack black, the girl from "Jacky Brown", sarah jessica parker, pierce brosnan, michael j. fox, martin short. all directed by tim burton and scored by danny elfman. |
Being John Malkovich
|
SNATCH = best movie ever created
the prequel is good to, lock, stock and 2 smoking barrels |
So many great movies to choose from...
13 Conversations About One Thing - Not much action, but great if you want something to talk about after. Series 7: The Contenders - A spoof on reality television where people have to kill each other and the last one standing wins. Actually written before Survivor and the current reality TV fad hit. Waking Life - Great philisophical animated film, explores what reality is. If you have trouble following such films, the animation is phenomenal to look at. |
Dont know if anyone's mentioned it yet but
Suicide Kings - Christopher Walken and Dennis Leary how can you go wrong? Free Enterprise "Young filmmakers (Robert Weigel, Eric McCormack) trying to hawk a movie titled "Bradykillers" about a serial killer who goes after victims Marcia, Jan, and Cindy meet their screen idol, William Shatner. Shatner, appearing as himself, has fun poking fun at his own image. The two young men, who idolize him and in their fantasies have seen him as a shadowy fairy godfather figure, are alarmed at the reality of the middle-aged non-Captain Kirk man that they meet. However, their relationship helps anchor the two more into reality." (from IMDB) fun fun stuff. William Shatner's best role job ever, nope that isnt a joke. Also one that no one seems to remember Logan's Run. I just love that movie :) |

A lot of good films have been mentioned. I don't know how "obscure" this movie is, but I thought I'd throw in Spirited Away. Amazing anime about a young girl who ends up in a world she has to come to terms with. It was theatrically released for a short while and has found its way to Disney DVD.
Every time we watch it, we're amazed at how many turns the story takes in such a short amount of time. Seek it out. |

One of the best lines to come out of a bad movie ever.... |
A few I like.
Avalon, about an outlawed VR game that has a bad habit of leaveing the players brain dead. A Japanes director, a French cast, and filmed in Poland. REALLY good. Baise Mio(sp) French. Think Thelma and Lousie with hard core sex and more violenc. Mr. Frost. Jeff Goldblome doing the scariest Satan I've ever seen. British film Verses. Japaness zombie move. This movie is SO worth just for the ending. And the fights in it are pretty kick ass. And if you are like me, and love bad films, here is a true classic piece of crap. Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS. If you have eveb seen Hogans Hero's, you will reconize the set right away. They would sneak in to film after they got done filming the show. This movie is so bad the director pulled his name from it. I'm sure I'll think of more down the line.... |
Quote:
I killed your cat, you druggie bitch!... I thought it would bring closure to our relationship! |
I'll have to recommend the movie
Wasabi with Jean Reno. It's a French-made action movie set in Japan in which he discovers he has a 19 year old daughter. You really have to watch it in the original French with English subtitles to get the right feel for the movie. Did I mention you can see Jean Reno attempt to play DDR? For that scene alone it's worth the rental fee. |
Roger Dodger and a bit less obsure but i thought it was a teen movie till I saw it, a great dark comedy, Rules of Attraction

try looking up "Cold Dog Soup"

Bubba Ho-tep!
http://www.bubbahotep.com/ Check out the trailer, it's a very goofy movie. Bruce Campbell plays Elvis, and Ossie Davis (a black man) plays JFK. It's basically about how Elvis and JFK are still alive, but holed up in an old folks home. Patients start dying left and right, and they find out that this Cowboy Mummy, Bubba Hotep, is sucking the souls out of the elderly in the home. It's up to them to stop it. :D Very good, but insanely goofy, movie. |
Delicatessen - v funny french black comedy surreal but great
Versus - japanese, reasonably popular cult wise i think, it has everything, zombies, vampires, yazuka, bit of a anime style to it, although live action Cube - Entertaining movie about people stuck in a giant cube heh, done on a low budget if i remember correctly, its good fun Spirited away - anime, had to go to a arthousy cinema to see this on release over here (uk) but seems to be advertised more main stream now, good for kids as well as adults, brilliant anime, Naked lunch - semi biography of william S burrough, the guy seems to be tripping all the time, cockroach typewriters etc, 4 rooms, - almost 4 short films in one about a hotel on new years eve, directed by 4 different directors, including tarentino and robert rodriquez funny in parts, and a interesting experiment Lock stock + 2 smoking barrels + snatch, very popular over here, dunno bout anywhere else, but exellent britsh style gangster films/black comedy Battle Royale - japanese - School Kids forced to fight to the death on a island, classic stuff Donnie Darko - Big fav of mine, Why are you wearing that stupid man suit? Equilibrium - So-so movie, but the action is above average, gun kata = win Pi - Dark, about a scientist trying to find the universal pattern in everything, i love the way its filmed Brotherhood of the wolf, - french, saw it in the cinema in french, heard it has been translated/dubbed for the dvd, martial arts/action/period drama? heh but good all the same Snake in the eagles shadow - classic young jackie chan 24 hour party people - a docu-film, but with steve cougan and peter kay, if your a fan of british style humour see this - the rise of factory records and hacienda club, joy devision etc, The filth and the fury - all bout the sex pistols City Of GoD - amazing film about kids growing up in rio de jeneiro , violent + shocking probs some more ill throw out later, but these are what i can think of off the top of my head |

This is a great movie, in and of itself... I would also like to recommend, Donnie Darko. One of my personal favorites. :D Let me know what you think, ok? :) |
you can tell alot about people from the movies they consider "obscure" recommendations...
a couple of mine, which are, by far, not even close to a complete list: Baraka - a more recent film, but not as good as: Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, and Naqoyqatsi (a trilogy) Ichi the Killer Happiness of the Katakuris and for something slightly less obscure... Triplettes of Belleville (sp?) Waking Life |
Hawk the Slayer
Me, Natalie The Scarlet Pimpernel (The one starring Leslie Howard) Kull Are on my list, I love nothing better then watching these on a lazy Saturday afternoon. |
Cube
Death Race 2000, where the idea for Carmageddon PC Games come from Those are 2 of my fave obscure movies. |
If you like Run Lola Run, you might try "Heaven". It's by the same director, and is, IMHO, much better. It's also in English (IIRC -- oddly enough, I sometimes have trouble remembering what language a movie's in).

The Gods Must Be Crazy (hilarious!)

"La Jetée". A movie made up entirely of still photographs with a guy narrating the story. Unique and beautifully poetic.

Just saw this yesterday:
Cavedweller - "A traumatic event sends a musician (Sedgwick) back to her hometown in an effort to reunite with the daughters she abandoned. To do so, she must confront her abusive ex-husband (Quinn), from whom she fled years ago." With Kyra Sedgwick and Aidan Quinn (nominated for Independent Spirit awards for Best Female Lead and Best Supporting Male) and (very briefly) Kevin Bacon and Sherilynn Fenn. Pretty decent slow paced drama (the slow pacing works for the small rural town setting). It's set in Cairo, GA (south Georgia town a good friend of mine grew up in), but, unfortunately, they went and filmed the movie in Canada (like most movies do these days so they can save money). |
Well I think I'd have to say Whale Rider. I was kind of forced to watch it at the time, but I came out of the movie really liking it and am seriously considering buying it.
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...1.LZZZZZZZ.jpg Description There is a legend that Paikea rode on the back of a whale and led his people to New Zealand. Since that time tradition has decreed that the first-born male descendant will become chief of the tribe. Then Pai is born...and she is a girl. She grows up within a close-knit village which retains the tribes traditional spiritual relationship with the sea and their warrior values. Although loved by all, Pai faces rejection from her grandfather, Koro, who is brokenhearted that there is no grandson to carry on the line. |

Re: Aguirre. I just thought it was the most boring film ever (and I enjoy 'artsy' movies, so it's not just philistinism). For those who don't know, it's about a group of conquistadors who get trapped in the Amazon jungle and have to take a raft back down the Amazon. I thought they captured the boredom of being stuck on a raft for weeks and communicated it to the audience very well.
|
Metropolitan by writer / director Whit Stillman has some of the best dialog ever recorded on film.
The Vanishing, original Dutch version has the creepiest ending I've ever seen. Wages of Fear, a French movie about a group of men driving trucks filled with nitro glycerin up a dangerous mountain road. Real white-knuckle stuff. |
Maybe Delicatessen by Jeunet, that has been already mentioned. Hungarian Kontroll was great, but I suppose it is hard to find. And Asian movies, just about anything by Takashi Miike is pretty bloody obscure. The last one I saw was Gozu and it was...well, weird. But great.
