Japanese/Chinese action flicks
For those of you that read my last thread and didn't see "Retuner"...sound off here if you have any suggestions for any Japanese/Chinese action flicks that you would reccomend!!
One of my favorite was a movie that I believe came out in 1992 called "Lashou shentan". The American title was "Hard Boiled". This was an AWESOME movie with Chow Yun-Fat doing his double fisted gun action and directed by John Woo. If you're a fan of these types of movies and you haven't see this one...rent it or buy it asap!! |

Hard Boiled and The Killer were both great. Enjoyed Enter the Dragon too.
The Story of Ricky If you haven't seen this movie, it's definitely worth a rental (Netflix has it). It's basically Japanese schlock and has some hysterical action sequences (a guy strangling another person with his own intestines?!) Battle Royale This movie is supposed to be really good, but Netflix doesn't carry it yet, so I haven't seen it. Pretty cool "out there" concept. From IMDB: "Ninth grade students are taken to a small isolated island with a map, food and various arms. They have to fight each other three days long until the last one remains and are forced to wear a special collar which will explode when they break a rule.": Woo's A Better Tomorrow trilogy is supposed to be pretty good from what I remember hearing, and I think I may have seen one early in college, but think I may be mistaken (that would've been 10+ years ago).

I'm tempted to buy Battle Royale just so I can see it since I haven't found any video stores near me that carry it (maybe I should see if one will order it to rent).

I agree Shichinin no samurai is great. That's still the only Kurosawa film I've seen. Keep meaning to see Yojimbo, Rashomon, and others but still haven't. They're halfway through my Netflix queue. Might have to bump a few up.

Movies I like:
"The Legend of Fong Sai Yuk" (I and II) with Jet Li "Lady Snowblood" from 1973 (where Tarantino has ripped of a lot to Kill Bill) "Full Alert" (Ko dou gai bei) from 1997 "Once a thief" by John Woo "The Victim" (Muk lau hung gwong) from 1999 "Hero" with Jet Li

Modern Japanese action means one name my friend Takeshi Kitano.
Violent Cop, Hana Bi (kind of drama but much action too), Brother. Princess Blade which came out recently was mad as well, not Kitano, but cool anyhow. If you want to see where Tarantino ripped Resevoir Dogs watch City on Fire by John Woo. |

PHREDGREEN posted this in my "Returner" thread. It's an upcoming Japanese action flick called "Casshern". It looks amazing!!! You can go here to view the trailer.

I put this in the Returner thread, but it is worth a mention here. It is called Vampire Effect, and it has a very live action anime feel. Jackie Chan has a cameo, but I believe he also produced it. Also, while it really isn't an action movie, I just watched a good Korean crime drama called Friends. Not a bad flic, I was pleasantly surprised.

Battle Royale is possibly the best movie ever made. The only problem is that the actual Japanese version isn't subbed, you you need to buy a Honk Kong or British release of the movie. Chances are, no matter where you buy it, you'll get a bootleg version, so just aim for that, can be had pretty cheap online. I bought both movies at www.battleroyaledvd.com, not sure if their bootlegs, but there good and have english subs.
Battle Royale is an incredible movie, and I higly reccomend it. Read the book afterwards, its worth it to find out more about the characters. Battle Royale II is a good film as long as you don't expect it to be as good as the first one. |

Forgot to mention that the cute Japanese girl in Kill Bill Vol. 1 who is Lucy Liu's bodyguard was seen by Tarantino in Battle Royale and that's what prompted him to cast her in Kill Bill.

The girl who plays GoGo in Kill Bill, Chiaki Kuriyama, plays Chigusa in Battle Royale. According to IMDB, tarentino saw the film and liked it so much that he cast her as an homage to the film. Kinji Fukasaku, the director is mentioned in the credits of Kill Bill, died during the filming of Battle Royale II. The film was completed by his son.
Battle Royale is a great film to watch with friends. I know that the film has spread like wildfire through the campus once I started showing it to people. I know that most people are interested after they hear the plot device (9th grade class abducted and forced to kill each other), and most people actually see what the author, Takami Koushun, was getting at. |

Yeah! That was definitely some of the best fighting choreography I've ever seen! I don't know what's going on with him...but his American films aren't as good nowadays. I saw "The Tuxedo" and "The Medallion" and gotta say....didn't quite like 'em. Way too much wire work which he didn't use to do.

I keep hearing good things about the Battle Royale film.
The Storm Riders is a good one. It's a bit more cartoon action than some, but the fightings good .

There's another one called Ichi the Killer that's supposed to be incredibly violent and have a bunch of really inventive deaths.
I tried to find Battle Royale at a bunch of places in Atlanta today but had no luck. Guess I'll probably go ahead and order from Amazon.
