IGBY Goes Down
So, I just saw this movie last night and I was thorougly impressed with it. I wanted to know if anyone else had seen it and what your thoughts were of the movie.
If you haven't seen it and you like obscure movies, I suggest you rent it immediatly. Susan Sarandon and Kieran Culkin did a fantastic job. I also really enjoyed the banter between Igby and Sookie as well as between Igby and Ali. This movie was an emotionally taxing, freaked out movie that I think is worth a try for anyone. |
I was really suprised how much I liked the movie too. It was freaky as hell watching them kill their mother.

I didn't like it. I don't really have a good reason, but I just didn't.
On a personal note, I'm disgusted by the whole "Gee, I'm filthy rich and you can't possibly understand how much that hurts," garbage, so I guess this movie just caught me wrong. |

I really liked it. It was bitterly funny and bittersweet. Uuudar is right. Igby could easily have been mistaken for Holden Caufield.
|
I didn't care for it. The parallels with Catcher were overwhelming. But I thought there was one major difference between Catcher and Igby and that was Catcher was really good and Igby wasn't. A very technical explanation, I know but it had to be said.

Myself, I enjoyed the movie a great deal. Jeff Goldblum's character was pretty well done, and he is not a very strong actor generally, so it was nice to see. It is unfortunate that Ryan Phillippe was again cast in the role of inscrutable rich kid, as I think Cruel Intentions was more than bad enough.
I think Keiren Culkin developed into a very good actor despite his father. He is also very good in The Dangerous Lives of Alterboys. Though he does appear to have fallen into the same pattern of characters as Jake Gyllenhaal, i.e. the brooding, misunderstood intelligent loner. Of course, I'm basing that off of two specific movies each, so maybe not. |
Might give this a try. Title put me off at first until i read a few reviews.

I thought the movie was pretty good. Nothing to obsess about, but maybe one to add to the collection one day.
I agree with Kadath, Jeff Goldblum was suprisingly good in this film, I'd even go so far as to say that he deserved more screen time. The whole "Quirky, Anti-social intelligent loner" type of movie is a bit tiresome sometimes, but the charectors are what makes this movie stand out. |
