The worlds toughest movie quote.

I posted this awhile ago before the forum went down so I will try again. This quote has haunted my brain for the past 2-3 years.

It was said with a russian accent (I think)..

"Make you strong, like bull!" or perhaps it was "he is strong, like bull".

It was not "There is Something About Mary". I know Ben Stiller said it but thats not the movie we are all thinking of.

I am starting to believe this quote was embedded into us by aliens because we all know it but nobody ever knows where they heard it. If it helps, I know it was started with the Rocky and Bullwinkle show but thats not the movie we are all thinking of. Please end my suffering.

edit: its not Rocky 4 (100% positive about that)

cherriesue 05-14-2004 11:52 AM

are you sure it wan't an american indian acccent?

Booray 05-14-2004 12:21 PM

Definitely sounds familiar and I can hear the Russian accent in my mind too...

Averett 05-14-2004 12:21 PM

I know this. Grrr...

no...it very well might have been...its not "Dances with Wolves". I watched it recently to be sure.

Averett 05-14-2004 12:24 PM

If I'm thinking about the right thing, I think a woman says it.

Booray 05-14-2004 12:24 PM

I Googled for it and keep stumbling across threads on other sites where people are trying to figure out the same thing...one of whom was yourself!

Lord Humungus 05-14-2004 12:25 PM

I've searched the outer-reaches of the internet and came up with nothing... :( I've been hunting this down for well over 2 years now.... im telling you...aliens embedded it in our brains

Averett 05-14-2004 12:27 PM

This is going to bother me. I'm gonna call up my dad, he's good for this kinda stuff.

Lord Humungus 05-14-2004 12:29 PM

i would be your new best friend if you figured it out...for reals

Averett 05-14-2004 12:31 PM

My dad didn't know :(

Gah, this is going to bother me.

Lord Humungus 05-14-2004 12:32 PM

join the club my friend......

Averett 05-14-2004 12:33 PM

I think it's from a western?

Lasereth 05-14-2004 12:40 PM

It sounds like a quote from a videogame. I'm not sure where the Russian accent theme came from, but I swear Ayla said that quote (or something very similar to it) in Chrono Trigger for the SNES. If it's a movie, I got no fuckin clue!

you know..i swear sometimes I think its a woman too... for some reason i remember some russian chick talking to her friend about some guy she just did and she said "he's strong, like bull"

Averett 05-14-2004 12:54 PM

I'm thinking more along the lines of an older woman giving a man something to heal him.... like a pill or maybe something simple as some stew. And she says "Make you strong, like bull"

Lord Humungus 05-14-2004 01:01 PM

Oooo..thats good...now what movie is it? :P

thespian86 05-14-2004 01:50 PM

theres the princess diaries that says "Your hair is thick, like wolf" in a rusian accent

seretogis 05-14-2004 02:01 PM

edit: nevermind, that's not it! :P

noahfor 05-14-2004 05:29 PM

I have got a lead, not a very good one though. My dad has been saying this forever, in the damn accent, but he doesn't know where he got it. Senility damnit.

losthellhound 05-14-2004 06:24 PM

Im working on it..

Lord Humungus 05-14-2004 07:01 PM

"Ayla: Crono you try?! Special Jurassic pork soup! Good stuff! Ayla fight
Reptites. Their leader Azala. Very smart. All in Ioka village fight. No
fight, go to Laruba village. Don't know where village is. Always hide.
Azala want to destroy Ioka AND Laruba. But Ayla no lose. Only when Ayla
dead, give up! Enough. Meet Crono today. Good day! Eat, party, sing, dance!"

"Ayla: Crono, you look for red rock? Rare, red rock sign of power. Ayla
strongest in Ioka village. So Ayla's rock! You want, you challenge Ayla!
You win, then Ayla give to you. Challenge Ayla? [Yes] Bring plenty soup!
Party now, so eat! Crono and Ayla have soup race!"

*insert insane button mashing here*

cherriesue 05-14-2004 10:49 PM

I keep getting the feeling that someone (perhaps a woman or an older man) is giving someone (that is weak or sick) something to eat and that person doesn't seem to want to taste it and the woman/older man says that it will make him strong like bull...i don't know...this is so annoying

losthellhound 05-15-2004 05:58 AM

Confirmed. Rocky IV

That explains as well how it has become so popular

My first thought was Rocky IV as well. Ivan Drago's wife saying it.

Xiangsu 05-15-2004 07:45 AM

I'm pretty sure its not this movie, but it is a possibiliity. Maybe it was Leon in the professional?

I had a dream where that was my answer too, except I couldn't remember the name of the film and kept calling it "that Call of Duty film".

Lord Humungus 05-15-2004 06:35 PM

if i put money on the table, would that make anybody actually find out what movie this was in? hehe..im at that point of torment... :(

bond007 05-15-2004 07:10 PM

Blazing Saddles???

dirtyrascal7 05-15-2004 08:23 PM

i tried doing a quote search for the keywords strong, like, and bull on imdb.com and here's what it came up with:

link to results.

no matches, unfortunately... not even rocky IV. i'm not sure what to tell ya at this piont... imdb has never failed me before.

Lord Humungus 05-15-2004 11:01 PM

take my word for it...you will not find it on the internet (ive spent hours and hours sadly enough). someone has to know someone that knows where this quote is from. but thanks for trying.

losthellhound 05-16-2004 07:42 PM

I used askmenow.com and they havent steered me wrong yet. Hell, they helped me find a hotel I was supposed to go to with only "It has a Timothy's coffee shop in it"

Mr.Deflok 05-16-2004 09:22 PM

Does the lady get the guy to drink something foul after saying "Make you strong, like bull"?

Kostya 05-17-2004 04:10 AM

Damn, this thread just made me want to watch Rocky IV...

BonesCPA 05-17-2004 06:18 AM

There is a movie called The Comrades of Summer. It "stars" Joe Montegna as an American baseball manager who gets recruited to manage a group of Russians in baseball. At one point during the movie they all get drunk, and I believe the strong like bull line is said. However, I don't think this is the original usage. Plus I don't think anyone could possibly have this in their video library. You just have to wait for HBO to replay it.

HugAPug 05-17-2004 10:55 PM

http://listserv.linguistlist.org/cgi...206b&L=ads-l#2
http://www.phrases.org.uk/bulletin_b...sages/671.html

Both these sites make reference to Rocky and Bullwinkle, although that seems to easy.

pancakerabbit 05-18-2004 02:38 AM

In a Futurama episode, they might have made a reference to this when the robot mafia guy says to Bender "Ho ho, this guy's an ox! He's got oxon-like strength! Hey, he needs a nickname right? Let's call him Clamps."

Lord Humungus 05-18-2004 08:24 AM

yea...I found all that awhile ago. there is a movie we are all thinking of maybe from the 80's or 90's that it was said in. I never watched Rocky and Bullwinkle so I know that it not what we are all thinking of.

Averett 05-18-2004 08:53 AM

That was a good one :D

Kostya 05-18-2004 03:41 PM

'Hey Clamps, maybe you should give em the clamps'

Clamps: 'Gee ya think? Ya think maybe I should use these clamps that I use every day? At every possible opportunity?'

Xiangsu 05-19-2004 03:01 PM

Have known of you seen The Professional aka Leon and your not sure. I am pretty sure thats it, someone please look into it because I don't own it.

Lord Humungus 05-19-2004 05:48 PM

i have seen it..dont recall hearing it in that movie..not sure but i would have your baby if you were right

cockmonger 05-19-2004 06:48 PM

I'm watching the Professional tonight (out of coincidence oddly enough...though, the movie is too new...the quote is legendary. but i will check anyway...I think Leon may be too cool to say that cliche anyway.

cockmonger 05-19-2004 09:04 PM

nope...not even in the movie...though leon does some memorable lines..."don't hang around that kid...he looks like a werdu (weirdo)." and the Milk Quote he uses is "no discussion" as she refuses the milk.

Gimli 05-23-2004 08:54 AM

My mind immediately lept to "Little Big Man"

Xsas 05-23-2004 01:59 PM

I'm going to make a movie with "strong like bull" in it so there will be a movie with that in it!

But, I think it could have come from Rocky and Bullwinkle, with that Russian baddy saying it.

My other thought was Zoolander, but that's too new.

maleficent 05-23-2004 02:03 PM

I have used this expression forever - I am pretty certain it's got a Russian accent - at least when I've said it - I've used the accent.

Are you sure it's a movie quote? and not maybe a tagline from a commecial? Though I am drawing a blank on the commercial.

Lord Humungus 05-23-2004 02:22 PM

ive always said it with a russian accent as well. Someone else asked me if maybe it was a commercial but I couldn't tell ya. Maybe? *shrug*

Xsas: From what I've found it was used from Rocky and Bullwinkle but that isn't the reference we are all thinking off. It was also used in Theres Something About Mary but that is also not the reference we are all thinking of.

Tophat665 05-23-2004 06:59 PM

Could it be from "The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming"?

ronan 05-23-2004 08:04 PM

DUDES! i swear its out of kirate kid.

mr miagi just seems to come to mind.

Lord Humungus 05-23-2004 08:57 PM

somebody watch The Karate Kid and let us know. :)

beerman 05-27-2004 05:07 AM

Austin Powers

Ivana Humpalot?

amonkie 05-28-2004 10:16 AM

I have a shot! There's a movie called Heavyweights, early 90's, and Ben Stiller plays this crazed out personal trainer guy who trying to shape up the guys in a so called "fat" camp. He's got a little bit of an accent, as well. I don't specifically remember him saying it, but he does get on the guys about eating the right food to become strong.

Lord Humungus 06-21-2004 07:10 PM

bump

Mikado 06-22-2004 11:30 AM

This is as close as I could get.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...roduct-details

maleficent 06-22-2004 01:03 PM

I posed this question to a few other people, this answer sounds good, but I don't think so, I'm still thinking commercial -- but maybe this will jog your memory.

Makes you strong like bull was said by Uncle Tonoose on the old Danny Thomas sitcom, at least some seasons of which were called "Make Room for Daddy." Uncle T. was played by Hans Conried, who also did some of the voices on "Rocky and Bullwinkle".

Most of y'all are too young to remember Make Room for Daddy, I only remember it from reruns, I don't remember the character but it's possible.

Lord Humungus 06-22-2004 01:21 PM

yea...i've read that before but thats not the movie we are all thinking of. im thinking maybe 80's early 90's. Its probably some off the wall movie too.... *sigh*

MR_WALLACE 06-24-2004 06:26 AM

Isn't it from CLERKS? The scene where Jay and Silent Bob are talking to this russian "would be rockstar".

Seer666 06-25-2004 05:50 AM

No, I'm pretty sure it isn' clerks. This is going to bug me all night now

Lord Humungus 06-25-2004 09:01 AM

join the club my friend...ive been on this for 3 years now

kofspades 06-27-2004 09:42 AM

How about Bullwinkle? Does the Russian chick say it in any of those cartoon shows?

analog 06-27-2004 08:01 PM

Oh fuck fuck fuck fuck FUCK I CAN HEAR IT IN MY HEAD!!!! NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I'm so good with ones i've heard before, and I've definitely heard it before... but from what???

Ah SHIT. *goes off to wrack his brain*

Jeff 06-27-2004 08:58 PM

I've heard it too, I have no idea where'd it'd be from. Quite the stumper.

Lord Humungus 06-27-2004 09:34 PM

ill sweeten the pot.... if anybody can figure it out and actually give me the movie its from, I will send you $20...paypal..cash..check...whatever the hell you want

Journeyman 06-27-2004 11:11 PM

Lotta Russian Americans in Deer Hunter.
But, it's a long, long movie and I don't own it.

highthief 06-29-2004 04:34 AM

I had 2 suggestions made beyond what has been posted.

One person said it may be from Practical Magic. I don't think so, but the guy is a movie buff.

The other said it was from Red Heat - again, I don't think so.

My thinking is - and me and my buddies have been using this for years to describe certain people "strong like bull... smart like streetcar" - is that it may have come from a skit, maybe SNL or Kids in the Hall.

Lord Humungus 06-29-2004 08:15 AM

yea Red Heat was on TV a short while back and I watched it but I missed some parts. The parts I saw wasnt it. I wonder if its from snl...... so many possibilities. Everyones heard it....everyone uses it...but nobody knows where its from. I think aliens implanted it into our brains and it doesn't really exist.

Booray 12-02-2004 05:25 PM

anyone ever figure this out?

Lord Humungus 12-02-2004 07:17 PM

I've been looking and posting on lots of message boards. Nobody knows.

Jonsgirl 12-02-2004 08:03 PM

Hrm.... Someone said "Strong like bull, Smart like streetcar" and that really rings a bell for me.
Still, I don't recall where it came from :(

Luck, man

TexanAvenger 12-06-2004 03:49 PM

Really, I'd side with either the Danny Thomas sitcom, Rocky IV, or Zorba the Greek... That's the best I can do... And man, I already have a headache from trying to find it.

By the way, why is it that you you think it comes from the 80's/90's? My grandparents and parents seem to know it pretty well... Maybe it comes from farther than that. However, you've been at this longer than me. You surely know better than I. Good luck on this quest.

Lord Humungus 12-06-2004 05:35 PM

well...it's very possible that it comes from the Danny Thomas sitcom, I've heard the before. I know for sure its not Rocky IV, I watched it specifically for that. I am not looking for where it originated but from the movie it was used in. I am positive it was used in some movie probably during the 80's or 90's. That is where everyone is remembering it from. Some goddamn forsaken piece of shit movie that I will never figure out. It was probably like "Cant buy me love" or some stupid-ass movie like that too. *whimpers*
Thanks anyway.

Xell101 12-06-2004 05:57 PM

Son of a bitch, I'm stuck on this too now. Well, if I find it I'll tell you, in the mean time, I'm off to seek the primary origin for that commonly used phrase, damnit.

FailedEagle 12-06-2004 10:17 PM

Is it The Golden Child?

flamingdog 12-07-2004 06:51 AM

Why are you so convinced that it's not one of the many suggestions you've already had?

DDDDave 12-07-2004 12:50 PM

My vote is Blazing Saddles.....

Alex Karras' character 'Mongo'.

" Mongo strong, like bull "

When you mentioned "Can't Buy Me Love", I pictured in my mind someone saying the quote in what I, for a second, thought was that movie, but then realized that I was thinking of a different Patrick Dempsey movie: "Loverboy". The one where he's delivering pizzas and basically working as a male prostitute every time someone orders one with extra anchovies. It seems like either he might have said it himself or that his "surfer dude" stereotype friend said it, or the Italian guy who's trying to make it with his mom. I'm probably wrong though.

Lord Humungus 03-28-2005 10:28 AM

just so you all know...I have still never figured this out. Pretty lame huh?

Charlatan 03-28-2005 11:19 AM

I'm thinking Gotcha! with Anthony Edwards and Linda Fiorentino (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089222/)

or maybe

Kindergarten Cop (but I don't think the film is old enough)...

I too have been saying this for ever... since definately the 80s and definately with a Russian acccent...

Personal Best? no.

Lord Humungus 03-28-2005 11:32 AM

that is funny that you say Gotcha!
It is one of the movies I have always wondered. I guess I need to rent it and watch it again and see if its it. I think its an 80's movie too....sob...this is killin' me

dirtyrascal7 03-28-2005 08:43 PM

haha... i just did a quick google search and i didn't find the answer, but i did find at least a dozen websites/message boards where you've asked this same question. :)

Lord Humungus 03-28-2005 09:53 PM

lol
you know its bad when google search come up with message board posts you've posted

asudevil83 03-28-2005 10:03 PM

alright.....i'm voting more Austin Powers.

but another one that hasnt been mentioned has hit me. could it possibly be from 50 First Dates? their was a crazy German chick in that who said some pretty funny shit once and a while.

They may have used the quote but they didn't originate it... I've been using this quote since the mid 80s at least. My brother also uses it...

jwoody 03-29-2005 06:43 AM

I just read three pages of this while racking my brains - fully expecting to find the answer at the end.

The quote is so fucking familiar.. I have a vision of a blond haired, Russian/Eastern European woman saying it, I just can't put it in context.

That was the prostitute you visited last week... really Jwoody, stay focused.

jwoody 03-29-2005 07:23 AM

I did go to Prague on a stag-weekend last year.

My only memory of that is the Strong-like-bull hotel manager demanding money to clean his jacuzzi... I did offer to do it myself but when somebody has your passport you're in their pocket.

SysteMatiC 03-29-2005 09:23 AM

The few suggestions I found are either
Bull Durham or Spies Like Us

Lord Humungus 03-29-2005 11:38 AM

I watched Spies like Us recently. All of it. Its not it. :( Friggin' torture

liquidlight 03-29-2005 11:49 AM

Why in the name of all that's holy would you start a thread like this where so many obsessive compulsive people like me would read it!? YOU DIRTY BASTARD. . . alright, now back to searching. . . You wanted me to hate you, didn't you?

liquidlight 03-29-2005 11:58 AM

I've just had a moment. . . what about the movie Major League? Either the little japanese guy, or the guy that's into voodoo?

Lord Humungus 03-29-2005 11:59 AM

Because I was hoping that someone might more obsessive compulsive than me and actually know the movie we are all thinking about. *cries*

Lord Humungus 03-29-2005 12:02 PM

I dont know if its Major League. Doesn't ring a bell but that doesn't mean its not it.

maleficent 03-29-2005 12:19 PM

Major League is too current... it's older than that...
