most underrated film of all time

thin red line

this movie blows saving private ryan away, no question, it's a masterpiece, a work of art, except for the fact that john travolta is in it, and george clooney, even though i like him

Kadath 05-07-2004 05:02 AM

Robocop! A masterwork.

Polyphobic 05-07-2004 05:58 AM

Donnie Darko

noahfor 05-07-2004 06:23 AM

Donnie Darko is not underratted. I think they are releasing it in theaters with extra footage. Any movie that is not released in theaters initially and then is put into theaters because of its popularity is certainly not underrated.

Charlatan 05-07-2004 06:40 AM

Hudson Hawk... hilarious

(Ok maybe not of all time but it's in my top 10 for sure)

iamtheone 05-07-2004 07:19 AM

Wrong!

To humor you:
Star wars then.
How about clerks?
Or titanic?
Or maybe the matrix?

seriously,
Brazil

Pellaz 05-07-2004 07:31 AM

The Hudsucker Proxy, and I'll agree with Hudson Hawk, too.

heccubusiv 05-07-2004 08:54 AM

Roger Dodger, Rounders, 25th Hour

Phaenx 05-07-2004 10:15 AM

The Last Samurai.

Every time I bring it up my friends are like "What?" Makes me want to kick them in the nuts.

madsenj37 05-07-2004 10:45 AM

Mallrats
or
Billy Madison
or
The Big Lebowski

I'm not getting you. That, in no way is humoring me. Whether it is coming out in theaters or not, doesn't matter. Donnie Darko is extremely highly rated by everyone who has seen it.

The irony is that on imdb's top list of movies Donnie Darko is way higher than Titanic and Clerks, and only 3/10 of a point behind the matrix.

It is number 10 on their list of sci fi movies.

Rubyee 05-07-2004 11:52 AM

I agree with you on this one.

I'll add a few:
Toy Story 2 - I like it better than the first one
Fear of a Black Hat - Much better than CB4
Tombstone - May not be all that underrated, but it's still my favorite Western, and I don't hear it talked about much these days.

Ditto, the film made me cry more than ROTK!

Also, any Kurosawa film is underated, sure they're regarded as timeless classics but how many people do you know have actually seen one? SEVEN SAMURAI should be compulsory viewing.

Your right. I'm wrong. I have no desire to get in a flame war over my opinion.
Besides, I'm sticking with Brazil.

Bill O'Rights 05-07-2004 01:20 PM

Omaha (the movie) featuring the talented and lovely Jill Anderson.

Seriously. This is the most Bohemian movie...ever. If you can find it, it's well worth the price of the rent.

noahfor 05-07-2004 01:21 PM

I'm not attacking you. I was just disagreeing with you. It happens.

MexicanOnABike 05-07-2004 07:27 PM

Equillibrium. I thought it was Fucking great! but i only saw it on the crappy payperview channel at 2am... i thought it would completely suck but the action scenes and the acting were almost as good as in the matrix or any similar movies. For those who never saw it, rent it! it's a bit like "1984" and a "perfect world" mixed together.

cherriesue 05-07-2004 08:52 PM

I agree with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Big Lebowski (great movie)
"The Party" (Peter Sellers)

The acting is far superior than The Matrix, Keanu's "dude" acting was neat for the first film since he's bewildered by all that's happening around him but in Reloaded... my God the CG Neo acted better! He did have a fantastic moment in Revolutions though where he allows himself to be "beaten". /RAMBLE

WarWagon 05-07-2004 10:25 PM

American Splendor. It got its credit, but was brushed aside when LotR won everything.

this was a great movie

cherriesue 05-07-2004 10:30 PM

I'd also have to say "All the Real Girls"

rodb 05-07-2004 10:36 PM

agreed with WarWagon and cherriesue, American Splendor is one of my favorites.

matteo101 05-07-2004 10:42 PM

Wow when reading at the top I was thinking about equilibrium, then someone said it. So yeah, equilibrium. Personally I still like the matrix more, but it is still an awesome movie, and is underrated

noahfor 05-07-2004 10:58 PM

13th floor was pretty cool I thought.

Bobaphat 05-07-2004 11:09 PM

I have nothing to contribute other than I own three copies of this movie.

Stephen King's Maximum Overdrive

Jackebear 05-08-2004 01:24 AM

The Man who knew Everything....I believe is the title of that Bill Murray movie about Bill visiting his brother in England and he gets caught up in one of those live theatre productions that you participate in...but it's not.

Bloody funny as hell and I remember there were only the 2 of us in the theatre when it was out. Nobody saw it...but when I tell them to rent it...most people just loved it. I did anyhow.

High Fidelity, when ever i quote from it or say something about people are like "What movie is that, I've never scene it [laughs at his own stupid pun!]". It is by far one of or my favorite film. Another one is Butterfly Effect, people said it was horrible but i thought it was amazing.

Actually, it was called "The Man Who Knew Too Little". :)
I agree with you, though. I liked it, myself.

-----------------------

I think the Chevy Chase and Daryl Hannah movie "Memoirs of an Invisible Man" was a pretty entertaining film.
It had a film noir feel to it that appealed to me.

kalashnikov 05-08-2004 07:57 AM

Definately "Death to Smoochy". The critics hated it, but it was absolutely amazing and hilarious, not to mention incredibly well shot. Plus an all-star cast! Robin Williams, Danny Devito, Ed Norton...

"I'm just trying to maintain my dignity...AHH! MY BALLS!!"

Batman976 05-08-2004 09:49 AM

Ahhh... good calls with American Splendor and Death to Smoochy. I agree with those 100%.

I don't think Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or The Big Lebowski are underrated. Not with the huge cult following both of these movies have.

Equilibrium and Starship Troopers. Equilibrium because that movie is fuckin' cool, and Starship Troopers because it's just fuckin' funny.

I'm going to have to agree here. It's a shame the movie was very poorly, if at all advertised. I remember seeing ONE tv spot back when it was released and I wanted to go see it; I then went with a friend to see it in the theater and loved it. I thought it was great. Too bad it didn't catch on.

seretogis 05-09-2004 08:45 AM

Deep Impact, Equillibrium, Dark City.

CSflim 05-09-2004 11:56 AM

Can't really think of any. Most films that I think are "underrated", aren't really underrated at all, they just didn't get the audience that they deserved.

BigGov 05-09-2004 03:40 PM

Orgazmo

The creators of South Park in a movie they wrote about a mormon breaking into the porn industry. What else needs to be said?

wrongfullyaccuzd 05-09-2004 10:39 PM

I really liked Butterfly Effect.
Training Day.

Nimbletoe 05-09-2004 11:17 PM

The Girl Next Door.

...What?

grayman 05-10-2004 08:31 AM

I agree with Equilibrium, Hudson Hawk, and Supertroopers. Equilibrium was not quite as good as the Matrix, but better than Reloaded. Hudson Hawk was just a fun movie, I guarantee that they had a blast making that movie. Supertroopers was hilarious. I thought for sure that it would disappoint because my friends raved about it, but It was better than I ever could have imagined it would be. I hope Club Dread is as funny.

Ace_O_Spades 05-10-2004 08:34 AM

How is super troopers underrated?

man, almost everyone I know has seen that movie at least once... I didn't think it was underrated at all... fuckin hilarious

pdxhicap 05-11-2004 10:38 AM

The single most underated movie has got to be "Pump up the Volume"

grayman 05-11-2004 09:18 PM

pdxhicap, are you Christian Slater? :D

CSflim 05-12-2004 11:26 AM

Ok, I thought of a film which I think is truly underrated.

Mulholland Drive.

This film is absolutely incredible, yet it seems so many people hate it so much. And its more than just not liking it. It seems some people viciously attack this film and anyone who actually liked it.
Ok, so its not for everyone, and it is quite a "difficult" film, but I don't see the need for people to attack it.

noahfor 05-12-2004 11:33 AM

Legends of the Fall, maybe it's just the indian singing at the end, but I really like this movie and don't hear too much about it.

I go to a movie to see a thrilling plot, amazing screenplay and incredible acting. This movie literally had no plot. The director literally said "its an abstract painting in movie form". I can't watch a movie that isn't really a movie.

Meow what is so god dang funny boy? Do I look like a cat to you boy? jumping all nimbley bimbley from tree limb to tree limb? Drinking milk from a saucer?

Also, I think that Billy Madison is very underrated. It is one of the funnist movies ever!

Get off your ass and find that effing dog!

kurtisj 05-16-2004 08:11 PM

the man with one red shoe, featuring tom hanks. or how about....the burbs, also featuring tom hanks. maybe even big. or maybe even joe versus the volcano? both once again featuring tom hanks

Rodney 05-16-2004 08:16 PM

Hudsucker Proxy and Dark City, definitely. To enjoy Hudsucker Proxy, you had to have seen the right movies ('50s movies about the big bad city and big business), and a lot of people haven't. Dark City I actually liked better than the Matrix -- more style, more mysterious.

What else?

Kelly's Heroes, the Clint Eastwood Movie That Time Forget. Really good, cynical movie about war, bureaucracy, and just saying "screw it all." It is the "Office Space" of war movies

UHF, Weird Al's only movie. Damn funny.

From Dusk 'Til Dawn. Yeah, people like it, but I like it better than anything else Tarantino ever wrote or Rodriguez ever directed. Again, damn funny.

guinnessgurl 05-16-2004 11:04 PM

Power of One.....
or any of Kevin Smith's movies :)

striderkevin 05-18-2004 05:40 PM

As soon as i saw this thread title, i thought of TTRL. Its perhaps my favourite film of all times. Though id like to see Mallick's original cut of it, which is a shitload longer.
