Scariest movie?
What's the most absolute, juiciest, mind-fuckingly scariest movie you've ever watched?
The Haunting of Hill House (1962 version) - based on Shirley Jackson's novel, the "ghost" is only heard and never seen. It still scares the shit out of me. The 1998 re-make is a piece of shit. |
Day of the Dead was pretty scary, but zombies have always freaked me out.
Rosmary's Baby was scary as shit. The whole movie sounds implausible, a New York housewife having satan's child, but the movie has this tension that runs throughout. Plus there are a couple scenes that make you jump right out of you skin. |
warrrreagl, I like movies like that to. The blood and guts are fun (mostly funny), but the best horror is always psychological.
My vote goes to The Shining. |
Event horizon
|
another vote for The Shining.
|
Uh, the Exorcist is the scariest movie of all time IMO. It is also a true story, scary ass shit.
|
the Exorcist, hands down. the story is solid, the acting is solid, and that demon that pops on and off screen at unlikely times keeps you on edge. then you have the whole 'based on a true story' edge, too.
Event Horizen is the only movie to almost make me leave the theater. i was 18 or so... i hadn't been frightened or made uncomfortable by a movie in about a decade.... but EH scared me shitless. |
yeah event horizon was pretty scary, but I think there are more, but I just can't find them now
|
i don't think i've seen event horizon before.. at least i either havent seen the whole thing, or have mentall blocked it out.
The ring was pretty unsettling, but "In the mouth of madness" is the one that still bothers me to this day.. The man on the bike was too much. |
Quote:
I was scared shitless by The Exorcist, too. Just hearing those opening notes of Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" is enough for nightmares to kick in even today. |
i think event horizon was pretty freaky....i cant think of any other right now though.
|
The Omen - I was 10 years old and at a friends house. His parents were out, and because we were hard men we watched the Omen, which his parents had on video. Afterwards, when I had to go home the 10 minute journey took 2 minutes. I'm sure I was running so fast I overtook a few speeding cars !
The light stayed on at night in my room for weeks afterwards ! |
The Prince of Darkness and the Evil Dead (the first one) are the first ones that come to mind.
Scariest TV show has to be Anna Nicole Smith's. I shudder anytime I see the commercial. |
I liked In the Mouth of Madness. EH made me jump a few times, before that the original Witchboard had it's moments too.
|
event horizon scared the shit outta me. i wanted the movie to keep going after it was finished though. i wanted to see that fucked up other dimension.
|
easy, "The Shining" (the original)
|
Jaws
seeing it on the big screen the first time, fuck, I almost swallowed my tongue |
for me its a couple that have already been mentioned...
the shining. the exorcist. event horizon. but also AUDITION - not really scary, but goddam FREAK-OUT material. |
The Exorcist is the scariest by far. Never have I been freaked out so long after I saw a scarey movie as I was after I saw The Exorcist.
|
The Beast Within and the original Pumpkinhead were both pretty freakin scary.
|
Salems Lot scared the shit out of me when I first saw it as a child. That movie produced many nights of cold sweating looking around my dark room.
I never looked at a mirror the same after the Prince of Darkness. |

I havnt been scared in some time. The only time I can remember being scared by a movie was after seeing Dracula: Prince of Darkness (I was 7 at the time). I even made a make-shift crucifix to keep by my bed :P
|
For some reason Donnie Darko creeps me out.
|
I'd have to go along with the votes for the Shining. I remeber my parents watching it when I was very young and the two little girls standing side by side in the hallway...*shudders*...freaks me the F#ck out to this day.
I recently saw House of 1000 Corpses. I thought it was extremely scary. I can't wait to check out some of these movies...i.e. The Omen, Event Horizon...I looooove scary movies!!!! |
Definitely Event Horizon
|
The American version of The Ring. It scared the living crap out of me, I had trouble sleeping in my room with a T.V. in it after that.
|
kenshee: Donnie Darko does have some pretty creepy moments.
IMO the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the scariest movie. The movie spends a lot of time not showing anything and when the good stuff shows up it doesn't look like the crap that Hollywood glamorizes today. Plus driving through Texas you can see farm houses out in the middle of no where and you can truly see some twisted, fucked up family living in the filth that they do and LOVE it! Scary shit! |
The Ring wins hands down (American or Japanese version; they're equally freaky), though I remember being very scared by Return of the Living dead when I was about 11. The idea of a horror/comedy wasn't too clear to me at that age...
|
Trilogy of Terror
it was actually 3 movie episodes. Two of them were kinda scary but the one with the voodoo doll really freaked me out. It gave me very bad nightmares for several days and I was scared the voodoo doll was hiding under my bed waiting to stabb me with the kitchen knife... |
To this day Salem's Lot gives me the shivers. Man, I had nightmares for years over that one!
The Shining is an all time great and The Ring freaked me as well. |
i'm with the "exorcist" crowd. i was 9 the first time i saw it and didn't sleep the whole night. i kneeled in my bed and prayed to god all night that he wouldn't let that happen to me! the part where she scratches "help me" from inside scares the hell out of me still today.
|
I watched Halloween III when I was 8 years old. Couldn't sleep for over a month afterwards. I was afraid robot monsters were going to come into my room in the middle of the night at poke my eyes out, and crush my skull. The only thing I could think about was how much I wanted a knight's helmet so the bad robots wouldn't be able to poke my eyes out.
|
Maybe not too scary, but to me very creepy and disturbing was David Cronenberg's "The Fly," especially when Jeff Goldblum is in the process of changing into the fly thing and has sex with that woman. It gave me goosebumps. A very dark movie.
I saw the Exorcist when it was in theaters rereleased a few years back, my first time seeing it, the part with the kid crawling downstairs backwards was pretty frightening. Also the beginning, when it's all loud with the dogs or whatever howling, nothing was even really happening, and it was STILL scary. |
Ringu and I suppose Ring 2.
The Exorcist was crap. So over rated, I watched it and hated it, did nothing for me. Event Horizon is freaky but not scary. I really like the film but I dont see why everyone is so scared when they watch it. |
hmmm, scary movies......the scene in the exorcist with linda blairs character crawling down the stairs backward made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and i broke out in goose bumps all over.
the mouth of madness was excellent, well crafted psychological horror e.g.; the woman with her husband handcuffed to her ankle naked, later on he turns into a tentacle thing and she is hacking him up with an axe, but it only gives you a quick glimpse. pyramid of fear (young sherlock holmes) scared the hell out of me when i first saw it at the theatre when i was about 9. but in recent years, i havent really been scared by movies, silent hill the video game did what no movie could, it was by far, the most disturbing experience brought to me through a visual medium. Middle of the night, lights off, headphones on, playing the intro where he walks down that alleyway behind the buildings, suddenly it is getting darker, you come across this wheelchair , then a little further on, a hospital gurney with bloodstains on the sheets and an air raid siren going in the background, go through a gate and there is a couple of corpses strung up on the fence, suddenly there are these little midget things with claws attacking you, PANIC STATIONS!!! immersive and di-fucking-sturbing |
THE RING!!! Creepy as hell, especially when they would show the people that had been "scared to death"! I loved that movie, awesome concept, does annyone know where I can get the japanese version?
The Halloween series is my favorite when it comes to older classic horror. House of a 1,000 corpses was good and had some freaky scenes but didn't give me night mares, thats how you can tell if it's a good horror flick... The worst horror flick ever!!!??? Jeepers Creepers... It had some freaky scenes and had a lot of potential, but there were sooooooooo many holes and dead ends to certain plot twists, that it just pissed me off..... It did have an eerie end though, not very many horror flicks end like that. |
The only horror movie I've ever watched that scared me even a little bit was the first time I watched Evil Dead. Other than that, I've never seen any horror movies that did much for me.
|
I rented the Japanesse version at the local big name video place (Hollywood video).
But I have to say, after being bombarded with all the hype I was ready to be scared out of my pants and was sadly disappointed. I heard the Japanese version was scarier than the american version, the American version was out so I pick up the Japanese. I waited and waited for this overwelming fear and it never happened. The movie did absolutly nothing for me. And since I was so let down from the original I have yet to watch the re-make... which is the exact same story with better effects. The original relied only on psycological fear and nothing visual.... it was all implied. |
The Ring scared me a lot, and Halloween scared me but i was 7 when i saw it
|
It may not be the scariest movie I've ever seen, but "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" could certainly rock my world when I was a kid.
|
Some favourites:
Ringu, and the same director's "Dark Water". Another cool Japanese horror film is "Hypnosis". It's wierd, but I strongly recommend it. Otherwise I actually like the Dark Castle films. They're not classy or original, but they're perfect popcorn-films. I'm really getting sick of all the sudden "cat-in-the-closet"-effects nowadays. A sudden loud noise just kills the mood in a horror film. It just makes me sit there and wait for the next loud noise. |
Wow. I can't remember the last movie I was truly scared by. <u>Darkness Falls</u> took advantage of my lingering fear of the dark; there are times even now when I feel like opening my eyes at night and don't, fearing what I'll see.
<u>Event Horizon</u> is pretty disturbing, but only somewhat scary. What I'd really LIKE to see is a good film retelling of one of the <u>Ringu</u> stories/sequels, in which a single man is alone in a world of Sadakos. THAT would be scary. (<u>Ringu</u> is good, by the way; you simply can't listen to all the hype. The more you read about the back-story and the original novels, the better it gets.) |
The first time I saw Poltergeist
The first time I saw Evil Dead Prince of darkness anytime I watch it And for a week after watching the ring I couldn't sleep if there was a TV left on anywhere in the house. |
Event Horizon and Twelve Monkeys
Has anyone got the DVD of Event Horizon and paused it on the snapshots that get flashed up - to see what actually happening? Part of the scariness is that they flash up so quick it's just enough to get your mind playing tricks on you and your imagination going on what you just saw :) |
scariest movie for me pooti tang "shudders"
|
The Ring, japan version. I saw at a theatre couple of years ago at a festival in Montreal and it was creapy as heel.
Blair Witch project, cause I saw a pirate version way before the movie came to theatre. |
I have just realised that I have seen very few scary movies. Did see The Exorcist and Poltergeist -Yikes, both freaked me out.
Exorcist was the first scary movie I ever saw, I think that is why I think of it as the scariest, that initial freak factor. Might have to check out some of the above mentioned flics now that my curiousity is peaked. |
Barney's Great Adventure.
|
Definitely The Shining.
-Lasereth |
I still think the original texas chainsaw massacre is THE scariest movie EVER. but a close second would be the black n white night of the living dead. it rocks too.
|
The Shining was the scariest by far........especially the bathtub seen.
I also still think The Hitcher with Rutger Hauer and C. Thomas Howell was the best suspense/scary movie ever made, but not too many people have seen it.............AWESOME FILM!! |
im getting spooked just reading over all these scary movies :( :shit, what was that..?: :D
|
I don't really get too scared by too many movies; "Society" really turned my stomach inside out though! On sheer mutant horror "Class of Nuke'm High" is both very funny and pretty gross. As far as scary concepts... the Japanese filck "Battle Royale" is pretty thought provoking in a terrifying way - can't wait for the sequel.
|
I'm extremely happy that people mentioned Battle Royale, The Hitcher and Society here...
Rutger Hauer is the King. |
oh i also forgot to mention C.H.U.D. that one gave me nightmares when i was a kid. the ring 2 and the other sequals to it suck, they weren't scary at all, they just get progressivly worse and more sci fi than horror. sorry, just my opinion...
|
Xenu: I forgot about The Hitcher. Not only is that a pretty scary movie but it was visually very beautiful. Lots a great desolate landscape shots.
|
Another vote here for the ring...
|

Could you please point out the Science Fiction parts to Ring 2 because I must have missed them. Granted it's not a patch on the original, but the little boy in it makes the film for me. He did a great job imo, really built up the atmosphere and he didnt even say anything. Well he did a little bit, but not much. Ring 0 is pretty bad, but really only because it drags out and very little happens. It's pretty boring, but it gives an insight to Sadako's life, which is just interesting enough to get you through the film. All my opinion of course. |
weīre leaving out many movies:
1.- The Others specially when you (and them) havenīt realized they all are dead 2.- Stiring Echoes when kevin bacon sits in the couch and the girl is standing right next to him, it makes me jump every time i watch it 3.- Nightmare on Elmīs Street A TOTAL CLASSIC, i specially recall this scene where this girl runs searching for help and then she realizes sheīs running back in time again and again, it puts you right on the edge of a total breakdown! Though, Event Horizon scared the shit out of me, the shinning was good but it really didnīt scared me, but i surely laugh when the guy with the pig custome is sucking on a nude dude. When i first saw the exorcist (i was 8), i couldnīt sleep with the lights off for about a year. Finally, sice i saw The Sixth Sense, i freak out every time i feel cold and shiver when iīm alone. |
the ring...zzzz... i was extremely disappointed.
poltergeist.. scared the shit out of me. first saw it when i was 10 or so, with the lights out... still freaks me out to this day. |

Speaking of clowns...
"It" (Stephen King) is #1 on my charts. The first time I watched it, there's a part in the movie when the power goes out...my power actually went out 2 seconds after that. Whenever I see on TiVo that it's playing... I avoid it. Don't even want to catch a glimpse of that friggin clown. |
My vote is for the exorcist. While I was watching it, I thought it was funny, but that night I was the most frightened I have ever been. I also agree with the guy somewhere up above that said Silent Hill is scarier than any recent movie. The horror video games are very scary, because you're rapped up inside of them, and it's much harder to distance yourself from it and tell yourself
"it's not real." |
I must say that The Eye is probably the scariest movie I've seen so far. There are a lot of great horror movies coming out of Asia lately. Kaïro, Dark Water, The Eye, Ringu, etc.
|
Poltergeist gave me many nightmares when I was younger..
|
A movie that scared the crap out of me when I was a kid was a movie called "The Last Man On Earth" (or something similar). Others that scared me shitless when I was a kid (in no particular order) were Evil Dead, Deadly Blessing and Salem's Lot.
|

i would have to say Omen, Exorsist, and The Shining. Wholly crap...when i was little i thought that I could handle them. I thought wrong. Nightmares continued for weeks.
|
A movie called Ghost Story. Also, Jaws. I still wont go in the water.
|
The Exorcist scared the heck out of me when I was a kid. I rewatched it mroe recently and thought most of it aged badly and wasn't as scary now (mostly because it's so obviously fake compared to today's special effects). The Shining also scared me as a kid, and still scares me today. I think it's aged better.
|
Definitely "The Exorcist". I saw it for the first time when I was 12 years or so, and I have a vague feeling that it might have done quite some damage to my young psyche. Just thinking of that voice used to scare the shit out of me and I had recurring nightmares about being obsessed myself.
Also it has spoiled the genre for me, because in comparison all other horror movies are at best entertaining or, wich is more often the case, ridiculous and pathetic. |
My vote goes to The Shining. I watched it without knowing much of anything about it, and it started at around midnight. My brother and I watched it (we were 16 and 17 or so) and were so scared neither of us said a single word through the whole movie. I stayed up for another full hour watching Sportscenter to try to get my mind straight again.
Another one that has only gotten one mention is The Blair Witch Project. It's the kind of thing where you love it or you hate it, and I loved it. Totally freaked me out. Rosemary's Baby had its moments but overall I wasn't impressed. Too slow. Although whoever mentioned the tension was right - it was tense the whole way through. Just not tense enough for me, or not enough payoff or something. <shrug> One other scary thing I saw recently was Sofia Coppolla's performance in Godfather III. Frighteningly bad. |
While I agree with The Shining and The Exorsist, I don't think I was ever so frightened by a movie as I was when I was 11 and watched Salem's Lot. That movie had me sleeping with the lights on for weeks. Scared the shit outta me. My parents took my TV out of my room for months because of it.
On the bright side though, I don't think I would have discovered Stephen King without having seen that movie. The guy is a horror genius. |
"The Changeling" with George C. Scott is my favorite ghost story. It will scare you without all the blood and gore.
|
Jaws has damaged me when Im in salt water diving. Especially when on the surface and the visibility is bad.
|
Quote:
Chills, chills, chills...... Also, after "Jaws," every crab, rock, and empty can I stepped on in the ocean instantly became a killer great white shark. |
Quote:
Here's some freaky movies to check out. The Last House on the Left - First Wes Craven flick How about some Itailian Horror: New York Ripper!!! -Fantastic Susperia! - Now thats cool cool shit! But ones that really scare me the most!!! Crossroads and Glitter!! j/k!!! Later, V. |
Ring 1 & 2. The remake didn't do it for me.
|
Jaws has that ability to stay with you. Years later I was swimming in a lake somewhere and out of the blue I started thinking abt sharks freaked me out. I think it depends on the mood your in when you see it. I have seen a couple that weren't that scary but I sure had nightmares that night.
|
Hm, I think I'd have to say Ringu and Ring2. But I saw them both in the theater, and that's always scarier. The american version scared me because I can't believe anybody could ruin a film so effectively.
For everybody who's saying the Excorcist, you should really see Excorcist, you should try Excorcist 3. Excorcist 2 was possibly one of the worst films ever made, but 3 makes my top ten horror films every year. Um, I guess I would rate Evil Dead 2 higher than Army Of Darkness, just because AoD was funnier than it was scary. The Legend of Hell House used to creep the shit out of me when I was a kid, but I was a kid, so who knows. I can't seem to find it on video. I still get kind of freaked out by Planet of the Vampires and Cannibal Holocaust. Those films with random madness and no explanation appeal to me. |
Aside from the usual suspects (Exorcist, Jaws, etc.) I found that these movies creeped me out pretty good.
The Blair Witch Project : I thought the movie itself was only semi-creepy, but it just so happened that I went deer hunting the very next day. I really don't scare easily, but sitting in a treestand, in pitch blackness at 4 am, I started to think about that movie and was absolutely TERRIFIED. If I didn't have a flashlight I probably would've gone insane waiting for the sun to come up. Signs : Once again I only found this movie semi-creepy, but once I got home and had to sleep at night, my imagination made the concept of aliens invading my house a little too real. Especially since I live in a rural area. Alien vs. Predator 2 : This is the scariest game EVER. Turn off the lights, slap on some headphones and play that Marine campaign. Probably the only game that's ever truly startled me while playing. |
Alien vs Predator was even scarier and a better game. :)
But yeah, playing as marine will have you crapping your pants. Another scary game is Silent Hill . |
|
The Exorcist was the scariest movie ever made I think.
|
fire in the sky
|
Prince of Darkness definitely has my vote for scariest. In the Mouth of Madness was pretty scary too. But then again, I really like John Carpenter movies.
While the film itself was marginally scary, I found the isolation aspect of Event Horizon to be very frightening. The first Halloween was very scary to me. Donald Pleasance definitely helped set the creepy factor on high in that one. I don't care much for any of the other films. Your standard rip em up fare (the Friday the 13th series, the Nightmare on Elm Street series) bore the hell out of me (Jason X was laughable). Most of them are far too predictable. |
Quote:
|
1. Exorcist
2. The innocents (adaption of "Turn of the Screw", 1961 B&W) 3. The ring (japanese original) :) |
Quote:
That was an awesome movie, it didn't try to hard, and it scared the crap out of me, especially what they say at the end. |
I dont get scared at movies as a general rule. They just piss me off. Why dont they just pick up a big stick and belt the crap out of the bad guy. Sometimes they do. They have the bad guy down and vulnerable. The smart thing would be to keep going untill all fear and adrenalin has been played out. But noooo. They drop the big stick and run away like a lunatic. Just stupid.
A few years ago when Blair witch came out I went to see the midnight session. It freaked me out so much that I had goose bumps on my arms for 2 hours after the movie. That was the first time I had ever been scared by a movie. A couple of years ago they brought the Exorsist out at the movies again. I had never seen it but heard some pretty good stuff so I went to check it out. It freaked me out heaps. It was such a good movie. |
I found "The Omen" to be the scariest. Not a lot of blood and guts. I look the horror movies are based on religion.
|
What -no Clive Barker fans here?
I'm going to go with Candyman but I best not say it three times in front of a mirror. Also Philip Glass does the score... http://www.clivebarker.com/images/movie/candy1/c1.jpg http://www.clivebarker.com/images/movie/candy1/c3.jpg |
In no particular order:
Poltergeist. I saw it in the theaters with my older sister and dad when I was 13 or 14. Seriously screwed me up for a long time. I picked up the DVD last Halloween and it's still scarier than most of the crap that passes for horror these days. The Shining. Jack Nicholson + Stephen King + Stanley Kubrick. What more do I need to say? Exorcist 1 and 3. Both great. I found 3 scarier. If you're a zombie fan, check out Della Morte Della More (spelling may be wrong). It was released in america as Cemetary Man. It's more artsy than scary, but worth watching. Honorable Mentions: Alien (the first one), The Cell (great visuals), Jacobs Ladder |
I was 8 years old when I first saw The Shining. Scared the living shit outa me and to this day I still shiver even thinking about those twins.
|
Alien scared the hell out me as a kid. I remember seeing that at the drive in. It was freaky becuase you never saw it. No one had ever seen the alien before. Not until the end. And then when you finally saw it, it was mean as hell looking! The original Halloween was scary. Before all the sequels. At least you think the kids have a chance. That maybe Michael Myers is human and can be killed or at least they can get away.
|
Im going to have to say the Exorcist i was freaking out when i saw it
|
*****SPOILER FOR "THE RING" DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT*****
The Ring is the scariest thing I've seen in awhile. It's the only thing on screen that's made me jump since this one episode of the X-Files when I was 8 or so. Especially the part at the end when that fucking girl crawls out of the tv and fucking transports 10 feet forward. And that one girl's face, the girl from the beginning, remember? Fucked up. Loved it, though. *****OK DONE***** |
Blair Witch Project: Got my father to go with me to see it when it was in limited release, before all the hype. First time in my life I couldn't sleep because of a movie.
Audition: Maybe not horror, but definatly one of the darkest and most disturbing movies I've sad through. To this day just thinking about it makes me uncomfortable. Session 9: Underrated little film that is chilling at times. |
