Need help with a movie quote!! (SOLVED!!) thanks the_marq

This has been eating away at me for weeks and it just popped back into my head today. It's from a movie I think I saw somewhat recently. I think its also from a somewhat new movie. The quote is:

"whats in a number? Maybe nothing's in a number, maybe a number is just a number..."

I think there is something said after that but I don't know what it is. Can anyone here help me out? This has been driving me insane for weeks now.

the_marq 04-13-2004 06:51 PM

Is that from "The Phone Booth" with Colon Farrel?

brandon11983 04-13-2004 07:04 PM

no

Cynthetiq 04-13-2004 07:15 PM

pi?

brandon11983 04-13-2004 07:35 PM

Not Pi. Good guess though, thats what my roommate and the majority of the people that I ask say. The voice saying the quote is more relaxed than Max's in Pi.

This is starting to annoy me.. hehe. I've tried IMDB quotes search.. no go.

I recognise this too... something I've seen recently.. I just can't think of what it was.. and that's what's bugging me so much.

I tried the IMDB quote search too, found nothing even close. Now you know how I feel. I feel like I'm so close.

bond007 04-20-2004 10:29 AM

just a guess... but how 'bout Field of Dreams???

Lasereth 04-20-2004 11:49 AM

Now it's got me too. I've never heard the quote before, but I get really annoyed when I can't find something after searching for a few minutes. This is the Internet, dammit!

brandon11983 04-20-2004 02:30 PM

Not Field of Dreams, it's something I saw recently on DVD.

I KNOW!! I can't believe that the info cannot be found on the all knowing Internet....

MadHatder 04-20-2004 07:20 PM

At first read, I would have to say A Beautiful Mind. But, after more thinking, my final answer will have to be Usual Suspects.

brandon11983 04-20-2004 07:41 PM

Wrong and wrong. Thanks for playing, but NEXT!! I'm about to the point of calling the video store and getting a list of all the DVD's I've rented within the past 6 months.

DO IT!! You think like me. You do whatever the fuck it takes to find out the simplest of questions. I'd probably buy every movie I've ever seen and watch them for a month straight to find out which movie it is. :)

It wouldn't be too much to ask either, as a friend of mine works there. I'm sure he would happily oblige.

True romance

I don't even know what the hell "Lord of Illusions" is. In fact... I'm not entirely convinced that you just didn't make it that up.... ok... kidding. Not that. Not anything Matrix, not 5th E, not True Romance. Keep the suggestions coming guys!!

Spiderman?

JohnnyRoyale 04-22-2004 11:13 AM

Maybe Memento? Sounds like one of those train of thought moments in the movie....

soccerchamp76 04-22-2004 12:10 PM

The movie "Seven" popped into my head for some unknown reason...

rev_skarekroe 04-22-2004 12:15 PM

Bambi?
Robot Jox?
The Unbearable Lightness of Being?
Ice Pirates?
The Johnson Family Vacation?
Duck Soup?
Intolerance?
Koyaanisqatsi?

Aw, I give up.

bond007 04-22-2004 12:25 PM

I think JohnnyRoyale may be on to something. was there some type of voice-over commentary throughout the movie???

brandon11983 04-22-2004 06:11 PM

Not Spiderman. I am not 100% certain that its not Memento. For some reason I'm thinking that the quote is from the end of a movie and its not at the end of Memento. Not any of the list above. Maybe I should watch Memento again.

Rangsk 04-22-2004 09:23 PM

I know this isn't helpful, but it reminds me of a quote from Freud: "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar"

Is it possible you've misquoted it, and that's why you're having so much trouble finding the source?

Mr.Deflok 04-22-2004 10:44 PM

I hate you brandon11983... my brain hurts now, I feel Lasereth's pain, this is the internet! With Google it should only take 2.67 seconds to find out :(

You're right, it isn't helpful. I am 99% certain I did not misquote it. I would not mistake a word like "movie" with a word like "cigar."

I was watching 21 Grams last night and Sean Penn's character was going on and on about numbers. I was just waiting for him to say this line, so I could come back and tell you that I had figured it out. Unfortunately, if he said it, I missed it.

Sorry.

I thought of it like that too. It's a voiceover while they're showing something, isn't it? There isn't a guy on the screen saying it.

We've established that already.

marz 04-26-2004 05:21 AM

You need to change the thread title to "The worlds toughest movie quote." I have looked all over the web, and asked all of my friends, and still no luck. I give up.

Derwood 04-26-2004 06:08 AM

I think it's pretty clear that the quote isn't accurate or else someone would have been able to find it by now

brandon11983 04-26-2004 09:16 AM

If I still can't find it after I get a list of all the movies I've rented recently, then I'll concede defeat. But not before! If you guys want to bail, I do thank all of you for your help and suggestions.

bond007 04-26-2004 06:16 PM

hey Brandon, any help on who you think the actor/actress is that's doing the quoting???

brandon11983 04-26-2004 09:20 PM

Well, I am certain that the voice is male. No idea of who though.

Mr.Deflok 04-26-2004 10:53 PM

Is the guys voice slighty gruff with a little accent, sort of like Willem Dafoe?

brandon11983 04-27-2004 06:21 AM

No, no accent. The voice is very smooth. It does remind me of Leonard from Memento. Just the tone of the voice.

SmileyG3 04-27-2004 02:20 PM

I'm not trying to say it was misquoted but it sounds a lot like...

"whats in a name? Maybe nothing's in a name, maybe a name is just a name..."

bond007 04-27-2004 05:36 PM

except... replace the word "name" with "number"!

InTeGrA77 04-30-2004 06:38 AM

you're getting obsessed brandon:)...i'll have a chat with your buddy at the video store sometime in the near future to see if he would have any clue...

crow_daw 04-30-2004 08:13 PM

OK, at first I was totally lost, but after reading the posts, I'm now almost completely certain it was indeed Memento, during one of those cut-scenes in which Leonard is talking on the phone with an unknown listener, in black and white. I can almost see it in my head completely.

But I could just be convincing myself of all this, but I'm pretty damn sure.

You REALLY need to watch Memento man, I think thats it.

Also, I have one of these of my own, and I don't think it would be best to start an entirely new thread. My quote can wait til after brandon's to be indentified if need be, but it goes like this:
"...then you wake up one morning and the President is making decisions without your permission, that son of a bitch, how dare he..."
and what's messed up is that I know that Gene Hackman said it, but I can't place the movie to save my life and it's driving me insane. And my quote may be a LITTLE off, but not much at all.

Derwood 05-01-2004 05:23 AM

Well I just read the entire script for Memento online and it's definitely not that movie. Sorry.

I've been following this thread for a while, and while I'm sure that I've also heard the quote... I think that it sounds like something Kevin Spacey would say in a movie..... Although memento really sounded like it could have been it...

crow_daw 05-01-2004 06:21 PM

Maybe American Beauty? That's the only Kevin Spacey movie i can think of off the top of my head where he does voice over.

Kevin Spacey it could have been. "The Life of David Gale" maybe?

I dunno, but I still think it is from Seven.
Spoiler: Kevin Spacey is in Seven, as the killer in the end

I still adamently think it is from Seven.

Just to get this one outta the way, its Jon Voight from Mission: Impossible. He says this in the scene where he meets back up with Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), and they are discussing who could have turned traitor and killed off the entire IMF team. Its the scene where Ethan realizes that it was actually Phelps (Voight) who was the killer.

As for the quote to end all quote threads, i don't think it is from Momento. I just searched the script for anything even remotely close, and it didn't pop up. I've seen that movie many times, and it seems too isoteric(sp?) to come from the Leonard character. The majority of his voice overs in the film are of him talking on the phone to someone about Sammy Jenkis, and about ways he deals with his memory affliction.

Actually...I think you might be right. It might even be the scene where "Snow" is talking to George Clooney about killing his other self but he is in fact the clone. It might even have been the scene where George first meets him but I'm pretty sure it was his character that said it.

MahlerIsGod 05-14-2004 10:11 AM

Booray 05-14-2004 12:17 PM

This is irritating the hell out of me. I posted the quote on another message board I frequent, hoping someone would have an idea.

Just posted it a minute ago and one person guessed 'Adaptation'. I didn't think that had been suggested yet in this thread. Another one that popped in my head was the movie 'Cube' , kind of an independent scifi movie from Canada. I remembered they were trying to guess what the numbers indicated when they were going from room to room to escape. But IMDB and Google don't seem to point to either of these as answers. Just figured I'd throw those out there to see if you might've recently rented either of them.

Lord Humungus 05-14-2004 12:24 PM

Real Genius

boom29 05-14-2004 10:09 PM

Just searched the Adaptation script, not there. Also searched the Cube script, and althought there's lots of numbers, it is not it either.

Not Real Genius either.
