Scariest Movie Ever......

I want to start out by saying sorry if there is already a thread like this. BUT, I am a true horror buff and am very curious on what scares you!

So, gimme a top 3 maybe of what you think the scariest movie of all time is......

1. Exoricst. (by far the best out there)
2. Damn, nothing even comes close for me. Can they not make a good scary damn movie anymore?

What are your thoughts. Maybe you can point me to something I have yet to see.

Redjake 04-06-2004 05:14 AM

Dark Night of the Scarecrow.

That movie freaked me out.

1. Exorcist. (just plain ole fuct up)
2. The Shining
3. Magic (ventriloquist dummies freak me out)

Mothman had me pretty freaked out, although I wouldn't call it scariest ever...

Stompy 04-06-2004 07:31 AM

I was bored by the Exorcist the *entire* time. It's the most overrated horror movie of all time, IMO.

Honestly, I've never ever been scared by a movie, but as a huge fan of the horror genre, I'd have to say either the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre or the Night of the Living Dead trilogy.

Kinda OT here, but if you're like me and are experiencing a lack of truly terrifying entertainment and you NEED something to really scare the hell out of you, I suggest checking out the Survival Horror genre of video games. Games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, etc. The Silent Hill series has to be the most terrifying and disturbing of them all.

I've given up on finding the "scariest" movie, and instead get my creeps from playing Survival Horror games, and they do a damn good job of scaring the hell out of me. If you're up at 2 AM looking for something to do, you'll think, "Well, I could play Silent Hill," and a part of you will actually not want to play it because it's so terrifying.

Charlatan 04-06-2004 07:59 AM

The Ring (or Ringu)

Low on the jump in your seat scale but very high on the creepy scary meter.

Just thinking about it six months later still gives me the willies...

Kadath 04-06-2004 08:09 AM

I know this is going to get the boos, but Blair Witch had me jumpy for a few weeks after. Of course, I had to walk down a wooded, unlit street at 5:00 AM every weekeday those weeks, but it was still scary.
It was pretty effective when I was younger.

But I agree with Stompy about Silent Hill. 3 was pretty tough to even watch my roommate play in the nighttime hours.

I dunno, never saw that one. Doubt it.

Basically theres this retarded guy, and he's friends with this little girl. (It's been awhile since I saw it, forgive me...) I think the guy gets killed, but he really doesn't, he hides inside this scarecrow and goes and kills the guys who were mean to him.

Something like that.... Saw it years ago on TBS after a Braves game. Scared the hell outta me.

Love the survival horror games. Love them. Walking down a dimly lit hallway only to have dogs jump through the window behind you. The 7.1 system is cranked and the lights are out! Yes.

OK, Night of the Living Dead and Texas Chainsaw? Man, those crack me up more than anything.

iamtheone 04-06-2004 09:05 AM

there was a show on Discovery or TLC called "Haunting in Connectcut" - was very good. Family moved into a old funeral home, only to have their kids terroised by ghost. Check it out !

gnort 04-06-2004 09:10 AM

Alien, aliens and the Exorcist really freaked me out....

of course I was a youngin' at the time.

Yeah, I crack up at 'em too :D There's still that certain something about 'em... the realism that makes them so terrifying. I don't see the dead coming to life anytime soon, but they way they portray that situation in the "Dead" movies (with the news broadcasts, etc) is just Grade A horror, IMO.

Actually, there is a movie that scared the hell out of me as a kid: Return of the Living Dead.

Now THAT movie is flat out comedy/horror and is meant to be funny, but even watching it today there's still that certain aspect of it that makes it creepy as hell.

I believe that if you took elements from Return of the Living Dead and mixed them with those of Night/Dawn/Day of the Dead, you'd have yourself one kick-ass zombie flick ;)

iamtheone 04-06-2004 09:37 AM

Did you see the new Dawn of the Dead? Looks great!

I also really liked Blair Witch. It seems to be the film everyone loves to hate. After seeing it my girlfriend at the time and I couldn't go to sleep, so we just got drunk so we wouldn't be so freaked out.

I enjoyed the Exorcist....it was a good movie, but I really didn't find it all that scary. I think it's a case of over-hype though. The first time I saw it was about a year ago. All I had ever heard was that it was the "scariest movie ever!" When I finally saw it I felt kind of let down. I'm sure if I had seen it back when it first came out I would have shit my pants.

Stompy 04-06-2004 10:05 AM

The DOTD remake was actually pretty good! Not as good as the original, of course, but very entertaining if you're a fan of zombie flicks.

I originally thought it was gonna be a cheesy remake with the way they it stood apart from Romero's original series and how they made the zombies more like those from 28 Days Later, but overall it was enjoyable. In fact, I think it was more enjoyable than 28 Days Later.

The beginning is jaw dropping. The amount of chaos and destruction they show in the city before they get to the mall is just amazing.

I agree, my exact reaction in the theater...." HOLY FUCKING SHIT!! :D"

I love when movies start out with chaos and carnage.

micah67 04-06-2004 11:18 AM

I don't like when scary movies take the cheap shot and have something jump out at you. Suspense or a mind-fuck is my requirement.

Exorcist is the top of my list. I know it's silly by today's standards but it still freaks me out.

Lotronex 04-06-2004 11:55 AM

Battle Royale-Not horror scary, but the whole plot device of the goverment abducting middle schoolers and having them fight to the death just sacres me to fuck.
Signs-Scary as fuck until you get a clear shot of the aliens. Seriously great suspense that is missing in alot of horror movies, demons don't scare me if you see them every 5 minutes. When you only see a pale leg or hear a creepy voice, that is scary, M. Night Shamalon(sp?) fucked up a movie with great potential

Ov3rKiLL 04-06-2004 02:23 PM

i would have to agree wiht a few people on this thread and say the exorcist, i have never seen the old one but i saw the last one that came out in the theaters and it was scary.

noahfor 04-06-2004 08:35 PM

i've only ever been scared by two movies, the first one was witches, a comedy, but i was very young, and the second was event horizon, that movie freaked me out for a week, i felt terrible for a week i was so scared, but i was young then too, honorable mentions go to the exorcist, and the new texas chainsaw massacre, dishonorable mentions go to blair witch, which i thought was funny, and the old texas chainsaw massacre for being popular, because it was just a joke to me, leatherface has like an afro

iamtheone 04-07-2004 05:37 AM

Event Horizon? What is this about.

Derwood 04-07-2004 05:43 AM

Event Horizon creeped me out only because Spoiler: The quick flashbacks of the crew mutilating themselves was fucking disturbing. Surprised it wasn't NC-17 because of it

I'll put in a vote for Poltergeist. Shouldn't have watched that when I was only 8 years old.

One of those future spaceship can go faster than the speed of light through some hyperdrive (or whatever you wanna call it) movies. Only it vanishes on it's maiden voyage and then reappears with the entire crew gone. The ship comes back posessed because as it used the hyperdrive it transported to another hell-like dimension. A crew is sent to investigate the ship and find out its whereabouts during the time it was gone. Needless to say all hell, literally, breaks loose.

It might not sound that good, but it's friggin badass, definitely check it out.

Redjake 04-07-2004 06:11 AM

I only saw about 15 minutes of Event Horizon, didn't know anything about the plot, and it was enough to make me turn it. And I don't "turn" movies.

Kadath 04-07-2004 09:35 AM

Event Horizon sucked the ass. I'll admit, it was disturbing; the group had to watch Aladdin afterward to feel better, but the movie was not good. See also In The Mouth of Madness with Sam Neill. The man sucks at horror.

balderdash111 04-07-2004 10:46 AM

The Changeling

To this day, the movie that still freaks me out when I see it.

Booray 04-07-2004 12:53 PM

I still think the first Halloween is a great horror movie. Very creepy.

I agree that Signs was really good/creepy up until near the end of the movie. Shyamalan's got a new movie coming soon called The Village that looks like it's got potential to be pretty good. You can see the trailer here:
http://www.apple.com/trailers/touchs...age/large.html

I remember seeing that same Dark Night of the Scarecrow too when I was a kid (probably on TBS too). Haven't seen it since then, but still remember how creepy it is. Looked on Amazon and it's not out on DVD and the VHS is out of print. They have some used ones for sale. I'd love to see it again.

I think Jacob's Ladder, while not exactly a horror film, was a pretty freaky movie.

Stompy 04-07-2004 12:57 PM

Jacob's Ladder was sweet. Ditto on that, wasn't really "horror", but it reminded me a lot of Silent Hill in that it was just... odd :) (The rapid head shaking left and right)

Final Destination

Jaws

mattevil 04-07-2004 04:45 PM

Man none of these films have scared me, Entertaining? yes. Scary? no. I can't think of anything except maybe NOES but I saw that when I was three and it was only the idea of a guy in my dreams haunting me rather than the actual movie.

teph 04-07-2004 08:08 PM

The Omen freaked me the fuck out. I had to take a break in the middle and turn the lights back on. Granted, I was 13 at the time, but my roommate couldn't stand it, either, and he saw it last year :)

Roark 04-08-2004 03:52 AM

Only movie which really scarred me when I was little was Witchboard. Haven't seen it in awhile. For me now it has to be more psycological than gore to get under my skin & I haven't seen a movie in awhile do that. Although i'm told the Original Ringu series is very good if you can stand the subtitles.

iamtheone 04-08-2004 04:04 AM

Session 9 was pretty good. More psychological than anything, if ya have not seen it, it is worth the rent. Blair Witch was good when I downloaded the shitty version off the net and before anyone knew what it was..... I did not get into the Ring that much. I bought the Japanese versions before I seen the American cut. Cabin Fever was pretty cool, a different spin on things. That Darkness Falls was not too bad either. What can I say, I watch all the horror flicks...
The Gates of Hell. Good for a classic horror flick. Salem's Lot was great, the lost boys... But still, Linda Blair growling tops it for me. Truely a masterpiece!

I saw this at a drive in theatre when I was 11 or so... very creepy movie.

George C. Scott is a great actor.

Stompy 04-08-2004 08:25 AM

I hated the Ring. Way overhyped. Everyone's all: "It's scary! You should go see it!!" But... I noticed that it was PG-13. Something was amiss there.

I saw it... wasn't scared. Didn't find one second of it to be remotely terrifying. It was entertaining, sure, but the overwhelming disappointment from the fact that it was overhyped and marketed to be the "scariest film in years" will forever ruin that movie for me.

Sorry, but I don't think any PG-13 movie can be remotely considered scary :D

Spanxxx 04-08-2004 11:39 AM

I have to agree that Event Horizon was a freaky movie. The Ring was also a very creepy movie, as was Mothman Prophecies. That damn movie had me freaked out for days. I got to doing some research on the net about it afterwards, and that just made it worse.. /quietly locks those memories back into the vault.../tosses key. Another movie that had me jumping was The Others. It wasn't scary at all, it was just one of those BOOOM make you jump kind of movies in places.

I've never been a huge fan of the genre. Particularly the "hack and slash" freddy/jason style movies, so I can't give much comment on those.

Those slasher flicks are never scary, just good clean fun if you enjoy gorefests

On a side note, Mothman phenomena has been reported in a small town in Texas within the past few months. I don't remember where exactly, I just remember reading about it briefly, I'm curious as to what might have resulted because of it, hrm, I might have to do some research.:hmm:

Booray 04-08-2004 01:36 PM

Thanks for the mentions of The Changeling. Looked good enough that I added it to my Netflix queue and it'll be coming in a day or two.

Arc101 04-08-2004 01:42 PM

The Omen – I was about 10 years old and at a friends house. His parents were out, and because we were hard we watched it. It was in the middle of winter and very dark and I have never ran home so fast since. My bedroom light stayed on for weeks afterwards. I’m in my 30’s now and I still refuse to watch it.

1. The excorsist
2. The Ring

The excorsist is the scariest I've ever seen. I've only seen it 2 times and I don't think I'll ever see it again. It freeks me out too much :(

iamtheone 04-12-2004 03:24 PM

See, I could not get into the ring. The first scene was good. After that, it was kinda so-so.....

Two similar flicks in plot, The Haunting and The House on Haunted Hill had amazing ES sound that really made the movie.

gorilla 04-12-2004 05:43 PM

I've seen alot of these movies and they had no effect on me. The only movie I've ever seen that had me sleep deprived was... you're all gonna laugh at me but... it was Edward Scissorhands. I know, its pathetic. My brother, babysitter and me watched it when it came out on video. I was scared shitless. Just the thought of Micheal Jackson with knives, its not right!

cherriesue 04-19-2004 05:26 PM

Crossroads with Brittany Spears. And anything with Ben Affleck. That guy can't act his way out of a wet paper sack!

Anyone ever catch those little scenes in The Exorcist when in total darkness that scary-ass face just pops up and then goes away? You really have to be paying attention. But when you see it for the first time you just want to cry and be held.

re: scariest movie/show ever...

it's so subjective as to when you see it. if you see movies like the Omen and Exorcist when you're only 10-11 years of age... they'll scare the crap out of you! if you see a scary show when you're 17 or older, it just doesn't have the same effect.

fwiw: I thought Kolchak: The Night Stalker was about the scariest thing ever. but then again, I think I was still in about 3rd grade at the time.

Heh, that's so true. When I was a kid, ET and Arachnophobia both scared the crap out of me. More recently the Ring and Event Horizon got me good. Silent Hill has already been mentioned but I'll also throw in System Shock 2, I almost soiled my pants once when I was playing with the lights off at around 2 am. It's a great game and there's even an updated graphics mod.

Polyphobic 04-29-2004 01:17 PM

When I was a kid it was Thriller (I know not a movie). MJ scared the crap out of me. Now it is more of the excorcist.

cherriesue 04-29-2004 03:46 PM

I'd have to say that MJ just flat out scares me

crow_daw 05-02-2004 06:47 PM

Well I just saw Gothika, and it was fucked up big time, but not the scariest ever.
I also was scared to death by Jeepers Creepers(I know, I know).
Most movies don't really scare me, but one on the list I have to agree with is Event Horizon, that movie fucked with my head.

Jadedfox 05-03-2004 12:23 AM

Yeah, you'd think that after their oldest son went nutso and the two(?) younger boys were reporting all sorts of crazy shit in the basement they would have acted quicker.

They did eventually call some sort of ghost agency though, correct? This is about when I turned it off and fell asleep, so I'm a little hazy on certain details.

Yes, I remember something happening to the father. They brought in a priest but I think was unsuccessful and they moved from their house. Did I remember them saying that it followed?

Let me find some details.

1. the Exorcist
2. Parts of the Sixth Sense
3. The Ring
4. Signs (parts of)
5. The first Nightmare on Elm Street. Then again, I was really stoned when I saw it.

amonkie 06-14-2004 12:36 AM

Can't get scared by the exorcist, saw it with a friend who had not completely watched the entire movie after starting it 3 or 4 times because he would get absolutely freaked out. So I was spending half my time laughing at him. We also had the lights on, which automatically make movies less scary.

The Ring and Signs got me right to the bone.... I *just had* to leave during the part when the dad was getting into the one house... .

fhqwhgads 06-14-2004 04:44 AM

Pet Semetary freaked me out, only because I hate movies with freaky kids in them! Gage freaked me the hell out. It wasn't a scary movie per se, but put a freaky kid with a scalpel in a movie and I'm gonna seriously have some issues with it.

I don't trust small kids with knives.

ultra_agent9 06-17-2004 07:00 AM

The Ring really got me. Loved the idea of watching a video tape and having seven days to live. A girl, with black scraggly hair hanging over her face in a white dress COMING OUT OF THE TV- fuck! I couldn't sleep for a week. Although when I watch it now, it's not that bad at all. Will check out the Japanese version.

Event Horizon also scared the crap out of me. Can't watch it again. Probably same with The Exorcist.

Like some of you others, when I was a kid I watched Evil Dead and was absolutely terrified. Now I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Kind of disappointed with horrors today. It seems they rely more on SFX than a good story and edge-of-seat suspense. Still waiting for a good one to come along...

Deliverance

I'm another vote for Event Horizon. Especially the self mutilation stuff. Ugh that was a creepy creepy movie. I only saw it once when it first came out. I want to see it again just to see if it has the same effect on me now that I am older. At any rate, that is one fucked up movie...

Got to be The Shining. Kubrick's film style and the erie silence in some parts are just really creepy....and those freaky fucking little girls!!

Exorcist is the top of my list. I know it's silly by today's standards but it still freaks me out.

Its not silly by todays standards, most horror movies of today cannot even touch it. Crap like House of the dead, Cabin Fever, Jason X and House of a 1000 corpses, embarressment to horror.

1) Tale of Two Sisters

(Honestly, you haven't seen horror till you've seen this... and it's so much more)

LARGE LARGE GAP

2) Ringu

3) Ringu 2

ANOTHER LARGE GAP

4) Exorcist

IMDB doesn't think so -- 2.6...unless Ace means "Janghwa, Hongryeon" which seems more likely, considering the inclusion of Ringu. Qualify, Ace!

Ace_O_Spades 06-18-2004 04:55 PM

yes, its the korean one

Keedo 07-11-2004 07:34 AM

John Carpenters remake of "The Thing" was the one that got me when I first saw it.

wrongfullyaccuzd 07-11-2004 12:52 PM

First of all, I want to thank everyone on here for giving me lots of titles to put on my list of movies to be seen. Unfortunately I don't have anything really original to add.
The Ring was pretty good, got me pretty creeped out at the end. I've never seen a movie that had me really freaked though. In fact, the last time I can remember anything on a screen that scared me so bad that I couldn't sleep was an X-Files episode when I was like 9...go figure.

Sargeman 07-14-2004 11:55 AM

I love all zombie movies and all the evil dead movies (second one was freaking hilarious, especially that eyeball flying through the air  )

But when the exorcist first came out, I remember going to the drive in with my parents and the whole bed jumping scene...... to this day it still scares the shit out of me, figuratively of course.

The shining and the original Hellraiser have to take honorable mentions.

Rosemary's baby and It's Alive (that monster baby movie. Although not at all scary by todays standards. That whole creepy baby monster hand hanging out of the basinette thing scared me. Again I was a little kid) also creeped my out

Todays movies aren't really scary just creepy, gory, and make you jump. Maybe because most it has been played out or I'm just older and have seen most of the "scary" stuff out there.

Porkchop 07-15-2004 07:03 AM

Couple of people have mentioned these. Omen and The changeling, not so much now but when first seen when they came out as a kid was frightening, the banging on the side of the bath in the changeling had me hearing it for days when on my own.

iamtheone 07-15-2004 08:49 AM

The Entity is a good one to check out.

braindamage351 07-18-2004 10:20 PM

The Ring. Mainly because the TV coming to life has always been one of my irrational fears.

NoSoup 07-22-2004 10:43 AM

I would have to say that I really think that Scream was one of the best horror movies in recent times. The realism is what really moves it up on the creepy scale...

sailor 07-22-2004 11:42 AM

The Shining freaks me out every time. Kubrick was a master.

This is a joke right?

whocarz 07-23-2004 05:39 PM

The only movie that still scares me today is Jaws. Fuck all that other nonesense about serial killers or monsters or ghosts. A big fucking shark will do it for me. Every other movie that scared me as a kid doesn't scare me anymore, except this one.
