best comedy show on tv (non animated)

what non animated show on tv now brings unique characters and storylines on a consistent basis as well as tickeling your funny bone? i know theres a whole bunch of shows out now that '
try' to be funny...ie cbs's monday lineup...but dont really cut it.

some of my faves now is malcolm in the middle, scrubs, and friends.

kgb 05-05-2003 09:33 AM

I really like Scrubs closely followed by That 70's show, allow i only watch reruns of that so I don't know if the new ones are any good.

meanSpleen 05-05-2003 10:35 AM

COUPLING

Its on BBCAmerica out here, and its probably the most consistently funny show I've ever seen. Sure, most of the storylines revolve around sex, relationships, and the difference between how men and women view the world - but after 3 series (aired in the US), I see no signs of it stopping.

How good is it? Well first off, they are currently in production of the American Version. The pilot has already been shot, and i believe they have the cast finalized.

Sun Tzu 05-05-2003 11:31 AM

Even though I would not want any friends close to being like this:
Seinfeld

Third Rock from the Sun is good

M.A.S.H of course

apetaster 05-05-2003 01:42 PM

NBC Nightly News when Brokaw says 'Cu*t' by accident.

godowomen 05-05-2003 01:53 PM

seinfeld

fuelmyfire 05-05-2003 02:43 PM

i've said it before and i'll say it again- "Curb Your Enthusiasm"

Hycdubg 05-05-2003 02:55 PM

Oliver Bean is hilarious. Trust me, you need to watch this sitcom.

RubberSouls 05-05-2003 02:57 PM

MONTY PYTHON reruns on the BBC or BBCamerica! Seinfeld, Everybody Loves Raymond and Coupling.

TRDSupra 05-05-2003 03:22 PM

Ali G for shizzle, blackest white man on telly
too bad first season was only 6 episodes

heccubusiv 05-05-2003 06:18 PM

Flying Circus is funny if you can find it, Malcom, and Oliver Bean are my favorites

Troublebot 05-06-2003 08:27 AM

I look for good ensemble casts that work well together.

Friends

News Radio (God bless Phil Hartman.)

Drew Carrey (at least the first few episodes)

Actually, the cast of West Wing does comedy pretty well too, even though it's billed as a drama.

trent98 05-06-2003 08:40 AM

when i used to have hbo curb your enthusiasm was great. has anyone seen some "office" type show on bbc america that ive been hearing about but not seen?

teflonian 05-07-2003 11:35 AM

I have to chime in for Malcom in the Middle and That 70s show as well. Coupling sounds good, when is it on?

TheIceMan 05-08-2003 12:16 AM

"Friends" - funny and cute
"Will and Grace" - OUTRAGEOUSLY Hilarious and the characters, like Jack, are so FUNNY and Talented! :D

bundy 05-08-2003 04:22 AM

COUPLING!

i love that show!
i'm amazed that it was mentioned here though.
it was on every thursday night here, but then mid-season, the ABC decided to postpone the rest of the series indefinitely.

needless to say that i complained. but nothing has come of it.

Atropos4 05-08-2003 11:58 AM

That 70's Show is number one in my book, Malcom In the Middle follows up with 2nd

OranjeDrank 05-08-2003 12:44 PM

Trigger Happy TV is the best, old SNL's are good too - the new ones are pretty lame though...

WildZero 05-08-2003 06:10 PM

Taxi was the best.

For shows still on the air, I like Insomniac on Comedy Central.

Uuudar 05-09-2003 09:56 AM

all about the scrubs. then, uhhh, i like insomniac and trigger happy tv

dvanzeel 05-09-2003 12:10 PM

There are a few. At the top of the list for most unique, interesting and 'Makes me Laugh out loud' is Curb Your Enthusiasm. My wife always says that she thinks she lives with Larry.

Other funny shows are The Bernie Mac Show, and Lucky (FX)

Those two plus Black Adder and Faulty Towers. :)

l_o_c 05-10-2003 12:49 AM

Curb Your Enthusiasm is hilarious. The Daily Show is my daily dose of humour. Mr. Show is great. As is Kids in the Hall, though they don't seem to be airing either as much as they should.

HBO has a lot of fantastic comedies-The Larry Sanders Show and Sex and the City are funny.

Best live action comedy show (not a variety show) still going is probably Curb Your Enthusiasm.

kenshee 05-10-2003 03:10 AM

Friends and That 70's Show

nebbugvrok 05-10-2003 05:27 AM

The office is really growing on me.

ToiletDuck 05-10-2003 06:35 AM

All in the family, Sanford and son, The Jeffersons for me.

Narcissus 05-10-2003 07:15 AM

Tough Crowd makes me laugh on occasion

as does SNL (its been getting worse and worse though :( )

Minx 05-10-2003 10:30 PM

Monty P. Flying Circus is always good (mind you there's some animation but we won't count that even though it is great), I love 70's show (Red is the best) and I like Frasier for the dude that plays Niles. Love the character.
There is a bizarre show called Trailer Park Boys....I don't think I'd necessarily call it funny but it's sorta warped! :p

Cuball 05-11-2003 07:06 AM

Friends on top !

I liked the Fresh Prince also :-)

soccerchamp76 05-11-2003 07:55 PM

That 70's show

preluder 10-02-2003 07:32 PM

SCRUBS!!! no question about it! stupid me, i missed the premiere. <kicks self>

fugue_life 10-02-2003 09:00 PM

Tough Crowd is funny becuase every now and then they say some f#cked up sh*t.

Daily Show is consistently funny

that 70's show is freakin hilarious as well.

JohnnyRock 10-03-2003 05:36 AM

certainly nothing new this season...have to agree with '70s show nd Curb Your Enthusiasm [keeping it to current shows so Honeymooners, Odd Couple, etc. are not here]

Prophecy 10-03-2003 06:32 AM

For more recent shows, I'd say:
Rock Me Baby
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire
Seinfield
- its always good for a laugh or two.

For older shows, i have to go with The Cosby Show and Sanford and Son.

RAMONES!!! 10-03-2003 06:36 AM

Reno 911!

MadProphet 10-03-2003 07:58 AM

It's not exactly a "comedy" but Gilmore Girls is one of the smartest and funniest shows on television.

orangeaidcow 11-23-2003 05:29 PM

Come on, no one for Trigger Happy TV?

SabrinaFair 11-23-2003 05:45 PM

Fraiser and Friends, particularly the older episodes.
I enjoy Will and Grace, although the title characters aren't as good as the supporting cast.
I like Scrubs a lot, too. I guess I watch NBC more than any other network.

Baldrick 11-23-2003 05:49 PM

For shows not on any longer - Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, and Black Adder (hence, my nick :))

For shows currently airing, there is really none that really make me laugh consistently. I chuckle most often at Coupling and Scrubs I guess. I watch King of Queens every now and then as well, but that's more to oggle Leah Remini. :D

meepa 11-23-2003 10:11 PM

I think the Daily Show is my vote for funniest non-cartoon... Not the sketches/interviews so much as just Jon Stewart doing the news updates. Man that is some good shit every time.

When it comes to sitcoms, I think Scrubs is the only one that I laugh out loud at consistantly!

lordjeebus 11-23-2003 10:15 PM

The Daily Show
Seinfeld
That 70's Show
Spin City

Are basically the only current-ish ones I watch.

JoenOcoee 11-24-2003 09:18 PM

Older

Young Ones
Mr. Bean

New
That 70's Show
Reno 911
Cops

DonnieBoy 11-24-2003 10:16 PM

Scrubs... highly underrated show IMO this is the funniest sitcom since seinfield... and right now Tara Reed is guest starring... man that chick is HOT!!! I also enjoy friends but the show has been on for too many years now..

DB

Skifter2 11-25-2003 12:42 AM

Seinfeld

Some of the episodes are pure genious.

Cycler 11-26-2003 07:20 AM

Scrubs all the way. I try not to miss it.

rider6061 11-26-2003 01:14 PM

Curb Your Enthusiasm is my favorite

The Office on BBC is also up there

I like the BBC Coupling but can't get over how bad the US version was...Who did the casting for that? Thank God they cancelled that one!

dragon2fire 11-27-2003 11:04 PM

best show on tv

married with children

i still laugh at it

new stuff

that 70s show is fairly funny

the daliy show is one of the few shows i make it a point to see as often as possiable

amonkie 11-30-2003 09:21 PM

Daily Show
News Radio
Friends

Batman976 11-30-2003 09:29 PM

Most of the good ones have been mentioned already.

Seinfeld
That 70's Show
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Etc...

But one show that hasn't been mentioned yet is

Sports Night

Moskie 12-01-2003 12:15 AM

Malcolm in the Middle.

I've unfortuantely haven't seen any episodes this season. But I've seen most of the past ones, and they're consistently hilarious. Dewey is awesome!

Anomaly_ 12-01-2003 12:38 AM

They don't seem to even be playing in late night re-runs anymore, but I love Kids in the Hall and the Upright Citizens Brigade. Who can forget all the memorable characters? : Chicken Lady, Cabbage Head, Head Crusher, Gavin, Danny, etc. Leave it to Comedy Central to cancel or not air good comedy. Battlebots was cool for a few shows but not worth UCB's slot by a long shot.

Batman976 12-01-2003 12:57 AM

Kids in the Hall has been on recently. I think it shows at about 1pm Central time.

ironchefkorea 12-01-2003 11:25 AM

Conan.
Chappelle.
Insomniac.

12-01-2003 05:24 PM

FRIENDS. period. end of story.

John Falcon 12-02-2003 03:34 PM

RENO 911.... funny stuff. The charaters all remind me of people I know or knew, too. Lt. Tangle is my immediate supervisor, so I find him really funny.

teshadoh 12-02-2003 06:56 PM

I like that new Ron Howard show w/ David Cross - tis funny hoohah stuff

Dreadful - my only exposure to this is on American Airline flights. AA must have bought up the whole series. It's enough to try and keep my dinner down when this comes on. I've not met a single Brit who thinks this is funny. To be fair on the travelling American public most I've spoken to think it stinks to.

hklong741 01-02-2004 09:56 AM

There is a wide spectrum, but that is a good thing.

Coupling - the UK version is great, but more importantly the lead actor (dunno name) was in a shortlived vampire drama Ultraviolet which kicked serious ass. It's on DVD in the UK and it's my plug of the week. The female lead in Coupling is damn hot as well...

Seinfeld - because the show about nothing often hits closer to home than we wish.

Sports Night - i may have the title wrong, but it was also short lived half hour comedy in the US that really earned ESPN Sportcenter fans proper.

MTV News - they just need to add Dennis Miller somehow and today's opportunities at sarcasm will not be completely wasted.

Rodney 01-03-2004 09:45 AM

Current:

Daily Show (only thing currently in production that makes me laugh out loud)

Insomniac

Gilmore Girls -- some of the cleverest wordplay you're ever going to see.

That 70's Show -- but mainly for Red.

Past:

Python

The first six-eight episodes (original summer 'season') of Northern Exposure. Carl Jung in the cab of a semi is an image that'll stay with me forever.

Police Squad -- of course.

I'm going to put in an honorable mention for a very unfashionable show from 30-40 years ago, The Beverly Hillbillies. Mostly it wasn't anything special, but occasionally it reached heights of absurdism that were positively Pythonesque.

bbb 01-03-2004 11:21 AM

For a current new show I have to say Arrested Development. Very funny show.

sherpahigh 01-03-2004 03:17 PM

That 70's show
seinfeld
will and grace

I haven't seen many episodes, but the 2 that I did see were hilarious so I'll vote for Curb Your Enthusiasm too.

Flying Circus
Red Dwarf
Most Extreme Elimination Challenge (MXC)

high_way 01-06-2004 03:08 AM

i dont watch much tv

but i do like:

that 70s show (only get the second season here in oz but i have read up on it a little)

MASH (classic... no one can do any better)

red dwarf (not on the box at the moment but my aunt and uncle have a heep on video)

seinfeld (can never get enough of it and i still get a little tingle of nostalga when i hear greendays - good ridance (time of your life)

flamingdog 01-06-2004 06:57 AM

friends, coupling, will and grace and any other comedy by committee are all awful. i state this as fact because there is documentary evidence to prove it. i don't even know how some of you can put will and grace as the best comedy show on tv. i consider myself to have a reasonably good sense of humour, and i can sit through will and grace without cracking a smile.

curb your enthusiasm on the other hand is the definition of good comedy. the office, scrubs, mash, seinfeld, people like us... all much much better.

frankx 01-08-2004 07:32 PM

Mad TV with the current line up.

BigGov 01-08-2004 08:01 PM

Seinfeld
Jimmy Kimmell
Conan
Tough Crowd
Howard Stern
Maximum Exposure (even though it's really just home video clips, the editing makes it just so damn hilarious.)

Kaos 01-08-2004 08:50 PM

Right now, I would have to say Arrested Development

01-09-2004 05:34 PM
