I just read that the Director's Cut for Donnie Darko will be released on DVD Feb 15, 2005 :D

Thanks for the DVD info Secret, I was literally about to ask that very same question. I put off buying the DVD after I heard the Director's Cut was coming to theaters. Gonna have to snag that one up on DVD when its released!

I'd recommend seeing both before deciding which you prefer. They're quite different IMO, but both excellent.

Me? I'm keeping both DVDs :)

Hrmmm... I guess I'll have to check it out then.

Interesting; this came out in Australia just before christmas last year (ie an apt stocking filler). Good to see we occasionally get some things before the USA :p
The guy in the "Darkomentary" is insane - funny though :)

SecretMethod70 02-04-2005 04:51 PM

oh yes, it's been out in Europe for awhile as well. I'm guessing that's because the US was not Donnie Darko's strongest location in terms of box office sales.

It comes out Tuesday Secret! To Best Buy!

I don't know. Is the director's cut all that different from the theatrical?

I'm asking because it has been awhile since I've seen the theatrical. I did watch the Directors Cut yesterday but didn't really see any huge changes other than the addition of a few deleted scenes and guiding of the viewer to help explain what's going on. There were other small things too. But the movie still contains the same message and story and everything, unlike some other Director's Cuts do.

I'm questioning whether or not I should just buy just the Director's Cut or if I should just go ahead and buy them both (the theatrical and director's cut) since I have yet to even buy the theatrical version.

Sadly, nope. I'm going to have to wait until it shows up used on ebay. I'm not going to needlessly give the MPAA any of my money. Not anymore.

So let's see a list of what's different.

Below I will post a link to a pge with Mega-Super-Ultra Spoilers. If you have not seen the theatrical version yet, I BEG OF YOU do not click the link below until you have seen it. That said, the link will provide what I think is a fair review of the Director's Cut DVD and a pretty detailed description of what's different (although I think it's much more substantial to see it than it looks on paper).

Before I post this link, however, I will quote a paragraph from the page that is safe for even those who have not seen either version to read:
Quote:

Having said that, I'm glad I experienced this new director's cut, in the spirit that its director has intended it. Kelly, in his commentary, refers to the new cut as "an extended remix," not as any sort of preferred cut. In fact, he admits that the theatrical cut is his preferred cut. This is an alternate Donnie Darko for those who require further clues about the film's mystery—and there's nothing wrong with admitting that you need those clues. As I've said, the original version is inscrutable without supplemental information. Indeed, the film's official Web site contains a lot of the information that appears in this cut. What this director's cut provides, finally, is all that information within the film, where, some may argue, it actually belongs. I don't necessarily agree, but Donnie Darko remains a fun, oddball ride in either incarnation.
And, without further ado, the link (BUT ONLY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT SEEN THE THEATRICAL VERSION!!!):

Donnie Darko is an awesome movie. One of my favorite songs that I listen to frequently is Mad World by Gary Jules. It's a movie that you may have to watch more than once to understand exactly what is happening and it's collective purpose.

I actually like the Tears for Fears version better, but it's still a great rendition.
