American beauty maybe a bit old, but just saw the film today and it's messing with me. i was wandering if anyone could give me some help on the symbolism. for example: red roses is the sign of beauty. |

You don't think roses are beautiful? Its a pretty universal sign of beauty. F'rinstance, if I asked to think of a beautiful flower, a first response would most likely be a rose. |

the plastic bag is life? |

This is one of my favorite movies. also with the beauty is everywhere motif, there is the theme of material possesions are not important. My firend noticed this one - Every time something is red, (flowers/door/dress) it represents the dream/lie that their family is living. |

One of my favs. The plastic bag, to me, represents beauty in the mundane that is so often overlooked in the hustle of life. |

^^^^ what he said,^^^^ that's one of the best movies ever, matter of fact, i am gonna watch it again this week. |

It's my most recent favorite of the best picture winners. I think that movie shows what the award is all about. I like all of the symbolism of enjoying your life. And I like when he dies smiling. Very buddhist-ic. |

 Thanks, moonstruck but I'm a she. :) |

One of the best movies I have ever seen. I just love when he tells his wife about the car... |

Regretably, I have never been good at symbolism. I've always been a sort of a "frying pan over the had" kinda guy. I know that something has to mean something else...but, I'll be damned if I can ever figure it out. I do like the movie, though. I'm just not one to disemble things. It gives me a headache. |
