Death of the Buffyverse

(I know there are SOME Joss fans around here...)

So, the WB decided to cancel Angel. Bleah @ them...I was pretty surprised, the ratings seemed to be rising. And after seeing a list of shows that WILL be coming back...well...I just don't get it.

And from Joss? This was posted at www.bronzebeta.com:

Some of you may have heard the hilarious news. I thought this would be a good time to weigh in. to answer some obvious questions: No, we had no idea this was coming. Yes, we will finish out the season. No, I don't think the WB is doing the right thing. Yes, I'm grateful they did it early enough for my people to find other jobs.

Yes, my heart is breaking.

When Buffy ended, I was tapped out and ready to send it off. When Firefly got the axe, I went into a state of denial so huge it may very well cause a movie. But Angel... we really were starting to feel like we were on top, hitting our stride -- and then we strode right into the Pit of Snakes 'n' Lava. I'm so into these characters, these actors, the situations we're building... you wanna know how I feel? Watch the first act of "The Body."

As far as TV movies or whatever, I'm not thinking that far ahead. I actually hope my actors and writers are all too busy. We always planned this season finale to be a great capper to the season and the show in general. (And a great platform for a new season, of course.) We'll proceed ahead as planned.

I've never made mainstream TV very well. I like surprises, and TV isn't about surprises, unless the surprise is who gets voted off of something. I've been lucky to sneak this strange, strange show over the airwaves for as long as I have. I don't FEEL lucky, but I understand that I am.

Thanks all for your support, your community, and your perfectly sane devotion. It's meant a lot. I regret nothing (except the string of grisley murders in the 80's -- what was THAT all about?) Remember the words of the poet:

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the road less traveled by and they CANCELLED MY FRIKKIN' SHOW. I totally shoulda took the road that had all those people on it. Damn."

See you soon.
-j.

That's too bad for the fans.
I can't get WB, but I've watched Buffy on FX for years and liked it.
I didn't get into Angel though when it came out on TNT or TBS or whatever.

The one I was pissed off about them cancelling though, was Firefly.

Angel is turned into a puppet in the next episode
I'd say it's time to put that sick dog to sleep...

Well...yeah...that's lame  I'm thinking it has something to do with Lindsey saying he was a corporate puppet, or something to that effect, a few eps back. Still...I cringe at the thought.

Other than that ep, though, things have been pretty good. "You're Welcome" (with Cordelia) and "Damage" (with the psycho slayer) especially...

diergray 02-16-2004 09:08 AM

That sucks. Angel has been really funny this season.

brianna 02-16-2004 10:46 AM

let's see recently we've had a dream episode and a nazi episode... the dog is dead, burry it already.

moonstrucksoul 02-16-2004 04:07 PM

never really got into 'Angel' , seemed like it had a succesful following though,

as long as they don't cancel 'Smallville' , then i won't have beef with the WB.

Charlatan 02-17-2004 08:21 AM

I was (am) a big fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but oddly enough I started watching it after I had been watching Angel.

I've been a fan of Angel but have been frustrated time and again with the direction the show has wandered. I loved the first two seasons but the last two were a jumble. There were some real problematic turns (IMO).

However, I still like the characters, the universe they are set in, and have faith that at least 75% of the episodes will be good.

This season has been an interesting reboot of the show and it seems to be going somewhere interesting.

It is the only show (I used to watch Angel and Buffy back to back) left that I watch on a regular basis.

This sucks...

Cynthetiq 02-17-2004 08:34 AM

:(

oh well, another 1 hour freed up from the Tivo line up.

gilada 02-17-2004 09:03 AM

I just rent buffy and angel on dvd anyway. so it's just good to know how much more I'll be renting.

Vilkata 02-18-2004 03:06 AM

So far they have 5 episodes left to film for the season. I hope Sarah Michelle Gellar changes her mind and agrees to appear in at least the Series Finale. She owes them that much.

actually I'm hoping that the franchise goes movie.. and then there can be Buffy in the movie since she's not interested in doing a BTVS movie at all.

Charlatan 02-18-2004 08:35 AM

...an Angel movie... that would work for me. It's already a very cinematic tv show.

Lunchbox7 02-18-2004 08:37 AM

I was greiving over the end of Buffy for quite a while. Angel had gotten pretty sad though not quite as bad as Buffy's Initiative series. I saw the first episode of this last series last week and it seems to of fixed itself quite a bit. Im excited for a good series. But now that excitement is tainted as I know it will be the final series. I hope it at least goes out well like Buffy did.

Rodney 02-18-2004 09:16 AM

Angel has had its problems, like Buffy -- too much unremitting grimness, among other things -- but it was perking up this season. One of the great things they did early on is show how the whole demon/magic world could exist in LA and just be ignored by "normal" people, accepted as some kind of cultural background noise that looked kinda weird but that nobody wanted to spend time looking at too closely.

That was actually the great metaphor of Angel -- all the stuff that's happening around us everyday, that we don't pay attention to. Sure, in the real world the stuff we ignore is not demonic -- but it can be pretty strange, and pretty harmful.

I liked the first year or two best, but I liked more shows than not this season, especially the one about the Mexican wrestlers. And my favorite Angel episode, from the second season, will always be "Are You Now, or Have You Ever Been..." about Angel in the '50s. A brilliant piece of work.

GSRIDER 02-19-2004 11:15 AM

Its a great series and I'm gonna hate to see it go. I even liked this last puppet episode.

Strange Famous 02-19-2004 12:58 PM

I dont think Angel ever got to the level Buffy was at, especially Series 1 - 3 of Buffy, but it was still a really good show, it sucks that it is getting cancelled. I cant believe the Buffyverse is really dead though, maybe a new slayer show could come out, with a different angle? I heard they were pushing an animated show based around Buffy in Junior High...

I think Angel always struggled to find its stride or make up its mind just what sort of show it wanted to be, but it still had great characters and a great potential to work with.

losthellhound 02-19-2004 01:29 PM

That sucks.. Joss is a kickass TV showman.. I think that Buffy and Angel were great shows. (Angel not so much at first but its gotten amazing)..

Too bad

Bill O'Rights 02-19-2004 01:58 PM

Buffy hell. Get Willow on there...now! Every single episode that they have left! Quick...it's their only hope!

Yeah...I'm biased a little. :)

I always prefered Faith and Glory, but Willow is pretty hott too.

Charlatan 02-19-2004 02:46 PM

I can see Joss getting another show off the ground in a few year's time... The Buffyverse is too rich a souce to not mine it.

As for the animated buffy (used to have it as my avatar but lost it when my laptop was stolen) it died on the vine.

In the meantime I get my rocks off watching the DVDs of old eps, watching Angel (the puppet episode was great BTW) and playing the video games on my X Box...

hehehe...then we could see what would happen with the Willow/Fred chemistry :D

GSRIDER 02-20-2004 10:41 AM

theres talk about an Angel movie of some sorts.

NeverBorn 02-20-2004 11:14 AM

I happen to fucking love Firefly..my buddy bought the dvd set Its fucking genius

CinnamonGirl 02-20-2004 08:23 PM

An online friend is helping out with http://www.savingangel.org/index.html ...great site, if anyone would like to help out. The focus is getting Angel to another network, rather than trying to convince the WB to keep it.

Church 02-22-2004 11:16 PM

Sorry to disagree, but in my opinion, Joss Whedon = bleh.

On another teen kicking ass note, I still miss Dark Angel. :( I know the show kinda sucked, but that's not why I watched it. ;) lol

so then I don't see why you didn't watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer to see, Buffy, Willow, Faith, Glory, Darla, Anya, Tara, Harmony, Cordelia, and even Dawn. All of them were great to look at and Joss' writing made them much more interesting characters than Dark Angel had.

And along those lines, watching Angel for Fred, Cordy, Lilah, Darla, and Kate :)

Charlatan 02-23-2004 07:11 AM

Ditto on that Cynthetiq...

Because the only character that was worth looking at was the one that Eliza Dushku played. I wasn't really into any of the other girl.

Mr. Mojo 02-23-2004 09:26 AM

From IMDB-

Fans Protest the End of 'Angel'

Fans of Buffy, The Vampire Slayer spin-off Angel have joined forces on the internet to protest the axing of the supernatural show. Last week, bosses at America's Warner Bros (WB) TV network announced Angels fifth and current series would be its final, which has prompted more than 45,000 Angel devotees to sign an online petition at <a target=new href="http://www.Petitiononline.Com"><b> [url]www.Petitiononline.Com - LINK</b></a> to keep the drama alive. And a representative at WB admits the fans' efforts may not be in vain, explaining, "It (helped) Roswell. It was as good as gone and the big fan campaign brought it back."

Lassus 02-23-2004 10:50 AM

...... maybe someone with some money an power will relize Joss's genius and make another series in the same world or carry on angel..... but luck isnt that nice
I personally would like to see a willow series so far alot of focus has been on vampire/slayer but this world is perfect to see a good witch series <though I want to see a vampire series as well> lmao anyway I hope things work out cause right now I really really really DISLIKE WB and thats being diplomatic

Charlatan 02-23-2004 11:50 AM

Maybe they will finally get Ripper off the ground at the Beeb...

Vampire Willow was one of the sexiest women of all time.

m0rpheus 02-28-2004 05:37 PM

*sniff* I'll really miss the Buffy-verse. Some buddies and I used to gather every Tuesday specifically for Buffy and it's made my Tuesday's seem a little more bland this year.

Now to lose Angel too...

Guess it's time I checked out the comic series, I need some kind of Buffyness...

CinnamonGirl 03-14-2004 12:43 PM

hmmm...Angel got 85% of the votes in the Save One Show Campaign.

Damn...I can't believe I forgot about "ghost" Willow. Symbolic, in that no one could "see" the sexiness of Willow.

CinnamonGirl, you're a girl after my own heart. ;)

Charlatan 03-15-2004 08:57 AM

Did someone say Willow?

Damn, I was truly disappointed when on the last episode of Angel they couldn't track her down... I was hoping for a guest appearance...

Oh well.

mastboyx 03-15-2004 10:02 AM

bummer angels out, well im just gonna say it was great while it lasted...

See...they shoulda brought in Willow. ;)

On a serious not, though...that sucks. Is this truly the end of the...whadid CG callit...the... "Buffyverse"?

She couldn't see her sexyness either. She just seemed akward the whole time. Vamp willow was sexier b/c she "knew" she was hot. Confidence means a lot to me when it comes to hotness.

I thought Fred was cute, but for the most part Cordellia was much hotter (on Angel, I wasn't into her in Buffy). That electricity chick was pretty hot too.

Overall, I'd take Buffy over Faith. Faith tries too hard to be the hottest.

I'm bummed that Angel is going. There is hope that it will continue, but it's not likely. Adding insult to injury, I think they might be replacing it with another vamp show!

CinnamonGirl 03-15-2004 04:54 PM

Yeah, the rumor is the WB's taking on ANOTHER remake of Dark Shadows...grrrrr.

well, not if you count books and "graphic novels" --neither of which I've gotten into, but I guess I will now that the shows are over. Sigh.

There's also rumors of a Buffy movie, but Joss Whedon has said he won't do it without Sarah Michelle Gellar.

What would be the point? It just wouldn't be Buffy without SMG...

I'd love it if Mutant Enemy did a new series... A series that focused on the stories of the young slayers that were created at the end of the the series.

It could be a very cool anthology where each episode is a different slayer. You could have guest appearences by some of the old cast.

I know it will never get made because anthologies typically don't do well but it would be so cool.

CinnamonGirl 03-16-2004 09:12 AM

Oops...I meant to add "and she doesn't seem interested in doing a Buffy movie right now."

A slayer anthology would be nifty...but...there wouldn't be any real connection to the characters, which I think is one of the things Whedon does best. Still, I'm sure it would be one of the better shows on TV if it DID happen.

t3m3st 03-16-2004 10:29 PM

Fray is awesome. That should be made into a show! But yeah... getting rid of Angel... CANCELLING IT... I've lost all faith in television

holtmate 03-21-2004 06:56 PM

I was really enjoying this new reboot, too. I loveds the fact that Ben Edlund was working on the show, and I could see some of his humor in the writing. Yet another show I'll miss...
