American Idol

I can't believe no one has started a thread on AI ....

Here's a video of my favorite contestant... this kid can SING!

http://www.jiveturkey.com/~lisa/

Does anyone watch it besides me? :D

Kadath 04-30-2003 10:37 PM

I cared about it when I could say I went to school with Justin. And by cared I mean I acknowledged its existence. The Simon Crowley interview on The Daily Show was pretty amusing, though.

-Ever- 04-30-2003 10:48 PM

I couldn't respond in a positive manner or figure out how to use my back button so I was edited.

mercury-hg 04-30-2003 11:17 PM

flipped by it at random and saw clay perform. he definitely has a voice and seems to have some respect, motivation, and emotion invested in his performances. i watch it every once in a while to see if clay and/or rueben can break the steroetypical mold of pop singers.

I may be "retarted", but I enjoy the show. Clay has an incredible voice, but he reminds me of the lead in every musical I've ever seen. In my opinion, he doesn't have the voice of a pop singer, instead he should be in a community theatre production of "Oklahoma".

However, after Ruben visiting the bottom 2 last night, Clay just might be the favorite.

I HAD actually started a poll and string for American Idol, but that was before the TFP purge....

Anyways... What the hell happened last night??? Rueben in the bottom 2??? WTF??

Before the TFP purge, Rueben was ahead on the poll by leaps and bounds, and Clay as a distant second. Did all the Rueben fans forget to vote?? Was his performance really THAT bad??

Anyways...I think that Joshua Gracin needed to be down there...not Rueben.

I DO however agree with who got let go. Trenyce is definitely the weakest out of the people that were left over.

warrrreagl 05-01-2003 07:49 AM

I'm clearly retarded, and I love the show.

I'm pulling for Ruben, and I've always been afraid that his fans will think he has it locked up and blow off the vote.

I think last night was a wake-up call for Ruben and his fans. I think next week will be a bit more logical. Probably Josh and Kim in the bottom 2, but since there aren't many contestants left, anything could happen.

Bring back Frenchie!

Unknown Poster 05-01-2003 08:18 AM

That's what I was thinking. Everyone assumed Ruben was a lock so they voted for someone else to try and keep them. It would have made for great drama if he was tossed, though.

05-01-2003 08:18 PM

Thanks, SexyCat. ;)

Also, yeah Ruben is great. Clay DOES sound like a broadway star but I think he has the potential to be more of a pop star. I mean, look at his first audition tape. Red hair, freckles and glasses. He's come a long way. I think he can go even farther.

Plummie 05-01-2003 11:00 PM

I want Ruben to win it! Clay can sing, but his weird facial expressions are too funny to watch. :)

Josh Gracin SUCKS and people seem to keep him around because he's a marine and everybody is all into patriotism these days.

I love it that Simon Cowell said "remember this is a singing competition!" I hope Josh gets the boot next, because he is a terrible singer.

neoinoakleys 05-02-2003 06:15 AM

Whenever I hear Clay, I think of a Las Vegas lounge singer. I could totally see him as a future Merv Griffin or matbe even a Frank Sinatra style.

Does anyone else see this?

Loup 05-02-2003 06:44 AM

Ruuuuuuuuuuuben.

greytone 05-03-2003 12:32 PM

I never saw a minute of the first season, but I am retarted enough to be watching this season. I am sorry to say I missed the last two weeks because of work. Once the cute blondes are gone, I guess I have to pay attention to the singing.

PredeconInferno 05-04-2003 01:59 PM

Personally, I think simon is hilarious. If it were me, I'd be saying some of the exact same stuff. But then again, only a dick would find another dick funny. So I guess that explains that.

JoeyB 05-04-2003 07:57 PM

If anyone remembers from last season, one of the favorites (I believe her name was Tamyra Gray) was eliminated much earlier than expected, while someone with lesser talent survived.

I thought Ruben was going to fall victim to the same upset, but I think his scare will really set up the voting this weekend. Josh will likely finally get booted. He represented himself and the Marine Corps very well, but he is a bit more limited than the others.

Kimberly will go next....then it's Ruben vs. Clay in a cage match. Hardcore, lumberjack rules.

Ambition 05-08-2003 05:01 PM

I want Ruben to win, but I have this feeling that Clay is going to reign AI.

05-08-2003 10:31 PM

Ambition:

I feel the direct opposite! I want Clay to win but Ruben seems to be the big teddy bear that everyone loves. (On a side note, why didn't Simon tell Ruben to lose weight but he had no problem telling many other girls much smaller than Ruben that THEY had to?) Anyway, Ruben LOOKS like a pop star whereas Clay doesn't really. I am hoping Clay will make it, however. *sigh*

P.S. Ruben is a great singer, there's just something about Clay I like more.

Because Simon is the one sinking his own cash into whoever wins, so it's just business. A fat man can be viewed as a sexy singer, but a fat girl can't. Simon isn't debating whether or not that's right or wrong in today's society; he's paying the bills, and he knows what sells.

I've watched every episode for both seasons, and I have a particular interest because I spent some years in the recording industry as a studio musician. The things that Simon tells people are exactly what they would hear every day in the business. No different.

05-09-2003 12:58 PM

warrrreagl:

Yes, I suppose you're right about Simon's remarks on losing weight. I just can't stand the double standard... but that doesn't mean it still exists, right? :(

chiefslappajo 05-10-2003 08:22 PM

Finally Josh Gracin's sorry ass got the boot. That's all that matters.

warrrreagl 05-10-2003 09:11 PM

Ruben was back in Birmingham on Friday, and the local stations and papers reported that he had an entourage of five police officers for protection (even though he's 6'3" and 360 lbs.) and a lady carrying a tray of ribs!!!

Tech 05-20-2003 05:09 PM

Clay or Ruben?

you all know you watch... ;)

my vote is for Clay.

i would much rather hang out with Ruben anyday, he's a cool guy and he sings very well, but good God clay sings with some of the best performers i have ever heard. i think he goes beyond britney/justin/kelly clarkson quality. he is amazing, especially coming out of no-where, think of where he could be with training. that last performance of Bridge Over Troubled Water gave me chills, and it takes a lot for another man to give me chills...

so 1) who would/did you vote for and 2) who do you think will win? (because they don't always match up)

phredgreen 05-20-2003 06:55 PM

huh?

am i missing something here?

meanSpleen 05-20-2003 07:17 PM

Whoever that big guy is, because I'm not rooting for the guy with the bad haircut.

VirFighter 05-20-2003 08:09 PM

Ruben

I have slowly grown to hate Clay more and more each day, maybe its because I live in Raleigh and am saturated with this crap everyday even though I don't even watch the damn show!

I saw a 4runner the other day with "Vote 4 Clay" written in its windows and I had thoughts about running it off the road. I just can't like the guy.

EDIT: To answer the part of the initial post: I didn't vote and I hope Ruben wins but unfortunately I think Clay will win.

05-20-2003 09:52 PM

Tech: There's already an American Idol thread. Check it out, I have a link of my favorite performance of Clay's.

Clay owns this competition, no question.

05-20-2003 10:02 PM

According to amazon.com Clay's soon to be released single is at #1 in sales and Ruben's is at #26. A foreshadowing into the future? Let's hope so.

Check it out for yourself:

Tech 05-20-2003 10:17 PM

my favorite performance for Clay was the last one tonight. does anyone else think his face looks lopsided in the pic on the cd though?

05-20-2003 10:19 PM

I don't see it being lopsided... hmm... His last song tonight was phenominal. I got goosebumps.

Mr.Deflok 05-21-2003 12:43 AM

Since you guys seem to watch the show could someone tell me why everyone boo's Ruben off the stage once he's finished performing a song?

I've watched the show a few times and can't see any connection.

Oh and that Clay dude freaks me out with the facials, looks like the kinda kid that sailors would love to have in the shower using powdered soap.

Unknown Poster 05-21-2003 04:45 AM

They aren't booing. They are saying "ROOOOOOOOO-BEN".

Tech 05-21-2003 08:59 AM

i figured they were clay fans booing *shrug* i can't say everyone is gonna be a sport and i thought it was kinda mean too, but the "rooooooooooben" comment sounds reasonable.

05-21-2003 10:48 AM

Mr. Deflok: Yeah I thought they were booing too but Ryan even said that it was Ruben's fans saying "ROOOOOBEN!"

Midnight_Son 05-21-2003 06:08 PM

American Idol

So big Ruben won the show...any thoughts?

well BBtB, American Idol is a show on TV...the TV is that other monitor looking thing in your house.:D anyway, I know it's a shit topic but I was bored.

clockworkgreen 05-21-2003 07:05 PM

my girl said I have to learn how to "slow blink" like the skinny white kid from Road Trip --- errr --- American Idol.

I'm not surprised the black guy won the competition, but the white kid will sell the most records....

Neotokyo 05-21-2003 08:23 PM

Checking some American idol forums, Clay fans are fanatical.
This kid will sell a ton of records, more than Ruben.

Tech 05-21-2003 09:27 PM

Clay = better
Ruben = easier to relate to.

i think that is why Ruben won. he's more of a "people's person"

05-21-2003 10:10 PM

Well Ruben is a good singer and performer no doubt... but there's something about Clay that Ruben doesn't have. Not sure what it is... but it's magical. Congrats to Ruben!

seretogis 05-21-2003 10:41 PM

Rigged!

:D

05-22-2003 09:19 PM

Ok, I'm confused... why does Clay still have the #1 selling single on amazon.com when Ruben has been proclaimed the Idol?

/me is suspicious

Mr.Deflok 05-22-2003 09:41 PM

You see, I have a theory, we've always known that God and Satan are supposed to come back to earth to duke it for ownership of the human soul, so where else better to do so than on American Idol? Ruben and Clay I believe were God and Satan but one question remains unanswered, which one was God and which one was Satan?

ShaniFaye 03-13-2007 12:48 PM

So....anyone watching the new season? if so, what are your thoughts on Haley and Sanjaya making it to the top 12 over Sabrina and Sundance?

Derwood 03-14-2007 09:54 AM

Sabrina got jobbed. I think there are a few sites out there that are pushing people to vote for the horrible contestants this year to try to ruin the outcome of the show. Pretty pathetic.

I don't think Sundance would have lasted long in the Top 12. I can't imagine him singing a Diana Ross song well. Sanjaya is just bad. That big stage ate him up. I think the cute/nice thing will only last so long. he's this year's Kevin Covais.

Redjake 03-14-2007 02:27 PM

man last night sucked really bad. the only one worth a shit was the backup singer girl. the rest sucked hard.

hambone 03-14-2007 02:33 PM

Yeah, last night did suck. I really like Blake though. His aren't always the best, but they are unique and he is a great entertainer.

Plus, beatboxing is just cool :)

thespian86 03-14-2007 05:57 PM

What the hell is wrong with you Americans! I am Canadian, I have my own Idol to vote for, but if somehow Canadians could set up some sort of veto voting system where we could take one vote away from someone... I would have payed good money to see Sanjaya go home. I can't believe that. He is SO bad.

Jove 03-15-2007 10:24 AM

Yeah, I agree with you punkmusicfan21, sanjaya is terrible. But, I think votefortheworst.com is voting for him just to see the kid struggle on stage each week.

imouseone 03-16-2007 09:15 AM

Well I hope unique and talented win (Blake mainly). Many of the girls are similar to other contestants, hell one of them sang Jennifer Hudson's song the same exact way.

Xazy 03-29-2007 08:15 AM

Sanjaya Malakar I wonder how long he will continue. I find it interesting that Howard stern & Bubba the love sponge are both telling their listeners to vote for him.

Now if I was a conspiracy theorist I would say all the other channels want him to get to #2 so that the show would lose face to the public.

I predict that Sanjaya will win thanks to this site.

warrrreagl 03-29-2007 09:58 AM

Saw on the internet yesterday that FOX is getting $700,000 for each 30-second commercial spot during American Idol. Those are Super Bowl numbers, and the show is on twice a week. As long as people keep tuning in to see if Sanjaya survives, FOX keeps raking in. I'm just saying......

Jove 03-30-2007 07:20 AM

It looks like Chris Sligh stopped caring about singing several episodes ago, when he started getting ahead of the beat. I thought he was the the funniest guy on the guy on the show.

shortynickel 03-30-2007 08:37 PM

I loved last years but i cant watch this years, partly cause good singers keep going off and cause sanjaya(and his many hair styles).

Swirlie 04-17-2007 07:29 PM

I haven't really watched before, but am this season - mainly because I want to see how far VFTW can get Sanjaya in this thing.

This show (and others like it) is nothing more than a popularity contest - it's not about who the best singer is. Until that happens, the show is a bit of a farce I think.

Plus, from what I understand, it's a lot more beneficial to NOT win first place, as you then have a lot more choice as far as your management team and what label you sign with, etc.

I still refuse to vote though. And Sanjaya was HORRIBLE tonight. I doubt he'll make the bottom 3 tomorrow though!

warrrreagl 04-19-2007 04:21 AM

hambone 04-19-2007 06:31 AM

about time

Jove 04-19-2007 06:45 AM

I am not sure why Sanjaya was so upset when he found out he was going home, since, I hope, he was aware that he could not sing, at all..

Daval 04-19-2007 12:23 PM

I wish Sanjaya was still on, I thought the whole vote for the worst and howard stern thing was freaking hillarious.

I think the producers rigged it though this time, there was a new statement at the end of the show saying the producers reserve right to make changes based on power voting methods.

Willravel 04-19-2007 12:26 PM

I find the show especially artificial, and it makes me kinda sick to watch it knowing that more people vote on the show than vote in our elections. Maybe Simon Cowel should dress down the candidates.

Edit: I watch crappy TV, like Cheaters and such, but somehow American Idol rubs me wrong. It's not a condemnation of anyone who watches the show.

I'm not so sure thats new, I've seen something worded pretty much the same many times before

yeah, that has always been there. I would actually guess that the producers kept him on for several weeks after he should have been voted off just because he was good for ratings. As soon as the "charm" of Sanjaya was gone, they cut the dead weight. These votes aren't audited, so they can basically boot anyone they want

ShaniFaye 05-21-2009 03:05 AM

ok, no one has posted in this thread in years...but geez after last nite I had to revive it

I have been an Adam fan since the audition shows, the boy is not only hot but an amazing performer...WHAT ABOUT THAT FINALE LAST NITE

OMG

for the first time I didnt want the show to be over

Kara in her bikini (I didnt think they would outdo the year Clay Aiken showed up to sing with his "biggest fan" as a surprise)

Adam with Kiss, I absolutely hate the song Beth, but Adam made me like it, and I do believe he outshone the rest of them during his performance with them

Cindi Lauper, who is still one of the most beautiful women in the world to me (and Dave, he'd have married her if he could, but he got stuck with me)

Rod Stewart (even though he didnt sound/look that great....I love him)

Adam and Queen oh man oh man oh man Can you just hear Adam and Freddie in your head singing together.....just another moment for me to really mourn the incredible loss of that man

I KNOW Im not the only one that watched it....I wanna hear what you thought

they are gonna be hard put to out do this finale in the future (IMO)

The best thing about Adam not winning is that I dont have to hear him do that god awful "idol song" and kudos to Kris for his first words (after "really?") being Adam deserves this

mrklixx 05-21-2009 04:35 AM

IMO the top 2 should have been Allison and Adam, which would have made the final result less disappointing. I think 2 things did Adam in. 1) The gay factor. 2) Bieng from California.

ShaniFaye 05-21-2009 04:39 AM

I agree on that pairing, Allison is great for her age, she will surely do great things

Glory's Sun 05-21-2009 04:52 AM

I'm just glad this crap is over so So You Think You Can Dance can finally start ;)

my wife loves Idol but I haven't seen even a minute of it since the Ruben days and that was only like 10 minutes.

Runningwater 05-21-2009 05:41 AM

I'm glad Adam lost - I didn't like him from the beginning. He's got an OK voice but he is really annoying imo. Kris he's also an alright singer but he really didn't get into himself until the last few shows. I believe he only won because he was the "underdog". I liked Danny Gokey a lot, I was very surprised when he was voted off instead of Kris, a few episodes ago. The performance last night were pretty good.

You can tell that Adam loves being the center of attention...and even though I hate to say it I know he will go far as an entertainer. I forget who the judge was that said they don't see people buying his albums as much as wanting to go see his shows - I can see this. He loves the atmosphere and that's what drew people to him.

Frosstbyte 05-21-2009 11:46 AM

Kris Allen is a joke. I have no idea what he was doing in the final five, let alone winning. I heard better people singing in coffee shops in college-and that's exactly what he is. The average good looking frat boy douche with a guitar singing songs and having chicks fawn over him. A fact solidified by his joke of a Kanye song. Ah well.

I would've been happy with any of Allison, Danny or Adam, but I guess there's no accounting for taste.

Leto 05-21-2009 11:51 AM

so.. I saw bits of it... Halfway through Kiss and (?) Adam ? And then some part where a girl forced her way on stage to take an award, and then tried to sing a song. Was that staged? I couldn't tell. I don't think Seacrest would allow such an unscripted thing to happen. Does anybody know?

I just accidentally saw Idol, because I was channel surfing looking for the fricken Hockey Game that wasn't on. WTF???? It's Stanley Cup playoffs, the best time of the fricken year for TV, when there should be a game per night. And?????? Nothing. My guess is that because there are no Canadian based teams playing, the American networks are playing fast and loose with the schedule. What's next? No hockey on Saturday nights??? Oh ya, that happened last week. Sacrilege. what else? Sunday Afternoon Hockey games? Oh ya, that's happened too. Nice. Televise a game when everybody is outside being active. Do they think this is football???

Ended up watching the rest of Criminal Minds instead. Now that's entertainment!

dohrk 05-21-2009 01:46 PM

I read on fark that there were 38 million votes from Arkansas (Kris's home state) which might go a loooong way to explaining his win.

I have heard that Adam was already signed by RCA before the show even aired last night. Smart hedging on their part (unless they knew the result before it aired).

Grancey 05-21-2009 01:50 PM

I've been an Adam fan since the beginning when we watched the auditons. I knew either he or Danny would win. Unfortunately, the twit brains somehow managed to text their way with this. I voted and had problems. Did anyone else? For the first three hours I got busy signals, and got through maybe 9 times. The last hour I got through almost every time with only 2 busy signals. This was really strange. I also found it strange that Ryan stated, " I know some of you had trouble getting through". Seems like something quirky happened, at least where I live.

I did check on it, David Cook has RCA records on his website, so my guess is that RCA is the corporate behemoth that runs the AI singers.

ShaniFaye 05-21-2009 04:58 PM

The way I understand it the 19 Group has first refusal on the top 5 (I think its the top 5 might be 4) if they pass on Adam then he can go to whomever he wants, but if they decide to keep him, he's stuck
I've never tried to call, I always text...no busy signals and I can get all my votes in lol

Charlatan 05-21-2009 05:30 PM

19 Entertainment is more of a management group than a record company. In earlier seasons, Simon Cowell had first dibs on signing talent. He is affiliated with BMG. He lost that right when he settled a lawsuit with Simon Fuller (creator of the Idol franchise and head of 19 Entertainment). Cowell, the lawsuit suggested, had ripped off the Idol format with his British series X-Factor.

Fuller, signs many of the contestants to his management company and then gets them placed with the right label.

Fremen 05-21-2009 07:01 PM

Adam should see if Queen needs somebody. (;-P) I kept hearing bits of Freddie, like Shani said.

Should have watched the Memorial Cup on Sportsnet, good game Drummondville beat Rimouski to go to the semi's, Rimouski played in the tie breaker tonight against Windsor, Windsor won, so they play Drummondville tomorrow in the semi's. I know what you mean about Sunday hockey games, they fuckin blow, not the thing I want to be watching on a Sunday afternoon, especially if it's nice outside.

Only Canadians can turn an American Idol thread into a hockey thread.

so, yes, I forgot to mention, I did take in the Drummondville / Oceanic gameand, as you said, yesterday Windsor Spitfires defeated The Oceanic in the tie-breaker!

so, it was a good hockey night (watching Malkin get his hat trick in Pittsburgh as well).

didn't have to watch any of the other television...

I think Adam is more talented, but I'd more likely buy a Kris record. Kris seems more likely to write his own songs, and could do well if he goes with a John Mayer/Jack Johnson/Ryan Adams vibe. You don't have to be an amazing singer if you've got great songs. Adam grew old to me after awhile.

I can't believe Kris won. He's so generic. I don't even remember his first half of the season because I kept confusing him with Matt Giraud. Even though Adam was a little theatrical, he took familiar songs and made them almost completely original and it worked. 0
