Calvin & Hobbes.....NOT
I don't think we'll be seeing Calvin and Hobbes anytime soon, more likely never. I had to post the link since the article is rather long. Is he going nuts?

old bill said he'd said all he wanted to say with calvin & hobbes.
you're right, the article is really long, so i didn't read too much of it, but this is all i need: "But if you can offer the world a strip like Calvin and Hobbes, don't you have a responsibility to keep working?" he doesn't owe anyone anything. and i say it's good he stopped. i mean, just look at peanuts. as for the disappearing into the woodwork, nothing crazy about that =). |
I love Calvin & Hobbes. When it and the Far Side left, the paper has never been the same. I own all the anthologies and books.
This article is kinda worthless in my opinion. Comparing Bill Watterson to JD Salinger is ridiculous. The guy just wants his privacy, not be a crazy hermit. I love his crusade against crappy merchandising of his characters. My uncle is a local artist here and I know how cheap art becomes when it's put on coasters, ashtrays, and other items. Calvin and Hobbes has always been my favorite comic, and will be forever. |
That's a pretty good article, but I agree, the wishes of the creator are the only ones that matter. Besides, many of the greatest things in the world are limited- like Fawlty Towers, or James Dean.
|
i miss C&H but why make it eventually jump the shark? He set out to do what he wanted to do and then some.
|
Very interesting article, Dano. We sit around and mourn the loss of something we loved to see all the time, but better to mourn it than to have a bitter taste, remembering the moment when it all went downhill.
Still, I miss that comic. |
Yeah, me too. I have all the anthology books too. It was a great comic.
|
Calvin and Hobbes was my favorite strip, even as a kid. I have all of the books, and still read them about once a year. While part of me wishes he would start drawing again, another part of me respects what he did and is thankful he killed it in its prime, rather than waiting for the strip to wane before he stopped.

I love Calvin and Hobbes, in fact that makes me want to go and read them all again.

Calvin and Hobbes was awesome and I miss it, but I'm sure it would have really dipped in quality had Waterston not stopped it when he did. I also loved; The Far Side, Bloom County and several others that stopped production in the late 90's.
Today, every strip my paper carries (The Globe and Mail) sucks. There is not a single exception, complete garbage. A couple days ago one especially crappy strip called "Drabble" I think made a joke about how hospital food is bland. Oh. ho ho ho. Really pushing the old envelope there aren't ya? You fkucing twit. There are a few good online strips out there "Sinfest" and "Get Fuzzy" for example. But the newspapers just run this spoonfed garbage from the "Syndicate." What an appropriate name that is. Anyway, I don't know what my point is...oh "Garfield sucks!" |
Get Fuzzy, The Norm, Pearls Before Swine, Monty, Dilbert, Boondocks, Zits, and Foxtrot I always find consistently amusing. There are some others that are worth a read as well, like Mutts, One Big Happy, Baby Blues, Stone Soup. sk

I like non sequitor, especially the fat balding superhero Obviousman. His costume's logo is DUH!, drawn in the barred circle.
|
I find Zits and Foxtrot to be pretty good, but for the most part, nothing else consistently delivers.

Cynthetiq - as I understand it, "jumping the shark" is a term used for a show or series that starts doing crazy things, just to get ratings or more readers. Watterson never did that to C&H. He retired for a reason, partly because of the problems he was having with the syndicates, partly because he was having problems with the size and templates which comics were being reduced to, and partly because he accomplished what he wanted to. Read C&H: Tenth Anniversary Book, and you'll understand what I mean.

Cynthetiq's question was rhetorical ;)
