Best "bad" films

What are your favorite movies that sounded like they would be stupid, but turned out to be real solid films?

A few from my list:

The Sure Thing - John Cusack
Summer School - Mark Harmon
Adventures in Babysitting - Elizabeth Shue
Breakfast Club - well, you know

All mine are "kid" flicks, but don't limit yourself to that sub-species.

-Ever- 04-29-2003 10:44 PM

i liked the frighteners with michael J fox when it first came out :D

Scorpio 04-30-2003 09:54 AM

American psycho

cheese 04-30-2003 11:39 PM

memento fo shure that movie sounded liek pure crack but it owrks out ery nicely

Mario 05-01-2003 05:41 AM

Cabin Boy, yea, nobody saw it in the theater because it was there for only 38 minutes, but it has some great moments.
I love the crew of the Filthy Whore.

fearofmear 05-01-2003 12:17 PM

The original Speed on paper sounds like a cheesy action movie but I really liked it.

The Sure Thing, excellent John Cusack movie!

Resident Evil. Best game-to-movie ever made!

HamiC 05-01-2003 03:31 PM

Starship Troopers -- almost a self-parody
Pitch Black -- visually better than expected and had a better than expected plot
Toy Story -- great kids flick that had a ton of stuff for the grown-ups
Shrek -- not as good of a kid flick as Toy Story, but better stuff for the grown-ups

Cynthetiq 05-01-2003 06:11 PM

Peter Jackson's Bad Taste...

along the lines of cyn's suggestion

MEET THE FEEBLES!

bundy 05-03-2003 11:28 PM

Zoolander.
its really really ridiculously good looking (and funny).

KillerYoda 05-03-2003 11:58 PM

Con Air was pretty bad, yet I always seem to watch it till the end when it comes on TV.

andyc 05-04-2003 11:58 AM

MEET THE FEEBLES! - Very sick film

Dog Soliders was a lot better than I thought it would be

Kadath 05-04-2003 08:09 PM

Deep Cover, Larry Fishburne and Jeff Goldblum. Like the plot of Vice City. Jeff Goldblum is surprisingly intense in it for generally being such a ho-hum actor.

Collateral Damage.....Worst movie EVER

hilbert25 05-05-2003 12:53 AM

It's all about the Last Dragon, the last good Blaxploitation Kung-Fu movie...

the frighteners
the stand

Hycdubg 05-05-2003 02:55 PM

Escape from New York and Escape from LA, both starring Kurt Russell. I enjoyed both of those.

lola218 05-05-2003 06:36 PM

we talk about this at work all the time. One of my favorite bad films has got to be OfficeSpace. bad plot, but everyone can identify with almost all the roles.

metalgeek 05-05-2003 11:10 PM

Cannibal: the musical.
very very funny movie.. if your into that type of thing..
(silly and violent)

MahlerIsGod 05-05-2003 11:43 PM

Favorite Bad FIms:
Long Kiss Goodnight, Highlander, etc

Pheatius 05-07-2003 11:16 AM

Hudson Hawk

Bad film with some good actors...

Bruce Willis, Danny Aiello, Andie MacDowell, James Coburn, David Caruso

(and some bad ones)

Sandra Bernhard, Frank Stallone

Very off the wall...

NoSoup 06-30-2003 09:55 PM

I got it... Crippled Masters

It's an old school kung fu movie about two guys - one with no legs and another with no arms.

However, when the guy with no arms puts the guy with no legs in his backpack thing, they become CRIPPLED MASTERS....

I'm not really sure what the movie is about, I spent most of it laughing my ass off at how incredible cheesy and horrible it was...

rockzilla 06-30-2003 10:00 PM

For cheesy martial arts, you can't beat 'Best of the Best' or it's sequels, 2,3, and 4. One of the stars of 1 and 2 is Julia Roberts' Brother. 3 and 4 are mind-bogglingly horrible.

I still cringe at the dislocated shoulder scene, only 'cause I've had a few of those, and even thinking about it gives me phantom pains.

YourNeverThere 07-01-2003 12:22 AM

Monsters Inc. I thought it would have been crapping and stupid but it was great. Just the fact that the city was powered by the screams of little children had my head spinning for most of the more sappy and not so fun parts. Over-all biggest movie surprise i've had in a while

losfp 07-01-2003 01:02 AM

The Evil Dead. When we were 12 or 13, a bunch of mates and I got into the habit of hiring out cheesy horror flicks to laugh at. Evil Dead was ludicrous, but somehow became one of my favourite movies of all time.

human 07-01-2003 07:13 AM

Babe:Pig in the City, should be utterly terrible, I mean, it's about a stupid little pink pig, but it's got some surprisingly deep ideas. And the chase scene is one of the funniest things I've every seen...

Nostromo 07-01-2003 08:07 AM

The critics hated it, but for some reason I liked "Big Trouble in Little China".

drawerfixer 07-01-2003 11:22 AM

Tremors

It's certainly not an 'A' class movie, but I watch it almost twice a year on TBS, and I've flirted with buying it on eBay.

crow_daw 07-01-2003 01:51 PM

Movies that I thought would suck but I really liked:
Cube
October Sky
Movies that I realize are really bad movies but I still really like:
Tremors
Evil Dead series

The_Dude 07-01-2003 02:50 PM

put hulk down there

Porkchop 07-01-2003 06:37 PM

I know dakness falls got slated. But i quite enjoyed it. usually hate this type of movie.

Gortexfogg 07-01-2003 08:52 PM

When I saw the previews for that movie "The Recuit" I thought it was another cliche spy film. I saw it when it came out on DVD and it turned out pretty good.

boredjerk 07-01-2003 09:02 PM

Inbred Rednecks

phoenix1002 07-01-2003 09:20 PM

Gotta love Evil Dead 1 & 2, and Army of Darkness...

Also Ghosts of Mars, not really a good bad film, just a sucky film, but it seemed really funny at the time, for some reason...

Nikilidstrom 07-01-2003 11:23 PM

Is it sad that many of the movies you guys have mentioned are my favorites?

Momento (pure genious)
Escape from New York (classic)
Evil Dead movies
Cube (not so much the sequel though)
Big Trouble in Little China
Office Space (hilarious)
Deep Cover (any Fishburne movie rocks)

but the king of them all is Dead Alive. That movie is the funniest, and quite possibly the goriest, movie I have ever seen. The monster make up is great, but the acting is so very bad. I mean, where else can you hear a line like "I kick ass for the Lord!"

classic :)

XenuHubbard 07-02-2003 03:09 AM

I second "Tremors".

And I have to recommend the extremely gory kung-fu movie
"Story of Ricky". It's excellent. A lot of splatter, and the plot is kind of ridiculous. Ricky goes to prison, and kills, well, kind of everybody. A lot of ridiculous "bosses", and sadistic wardens.

Cannibal the Musical (I've lost my spedoinkel!)
Logan's Run (You don't have to die! You can live! Live!)

also

Tombstone
Spaceballs

Nyenrodian 07-02-2003 02:31 PM

About a boy
Billy Elliot
Le grand bleu/the big blue
Triple X (Never seen a movie with a story line that's worse. But a lot of entertainment)

gov135 07-02-2003 04:06 PM

Showgirls
Tin Cup

BonesCPA 07-03-2003 11:12 AM

Guess the connection:

The Whoopee Boys
Quicksilver
Born in East L.A.

Q:What's the connection? A: AKA Pablo. (Not that I have any special attachment to Paul Rodriguez, but three movies that I can't turn off when they are on. [Of course, try finding the first one on tv. Ever.])

monkeydriven 07-07-2003 06:26 AM

Showgirls - It's the worst "serious" movie ever made....it is hilariously bad. Acting, writing, directing, everything is awful, that's why it is so great watching it.

livewirerc 07-07-2003 12:05 PM

I thought Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion would blow goats but it turned out to be a great little flick! Sure it was cheezy but the soundtrack kicked ass, the ladies were hilarious and Alan Cumming fucking rocks.

livewirerc 07-07-2003 12:06 PM

Oh, and I've got to agree that Showgirls is another of those GREAT "bad" movies. The dialogue is just horrendous, the acting is terrible, the plot stinks, but it all ends up being a blast to watch.

rodimus 07-07-2003 12:54 PM

Army of Darkness, I'm watching it now...:)

cronopio 07-07-2003 04:41 PM

I know it is crap but I really like Hackers. I think the whole movie is extremely hokey, but the chemistry between Angelie Jolie and Jonny Lee Miller is unbelievable.

Jesus Malverde 07-07-2003 05:11 PM

Zoolander was the first DVD in my collection, its funny in a REALLY stupid way.

frankx 07-20-2003 04:31 PM

Dead Alive
Hudson Hawk

sportsrule101 07-21-2003 08:46 AM

Resident evil, couldn't believe i actually like it

3 words is all you need to know that you should see this move:

TECHNO MUSIC ZOMBIES

dim5 07-22-2003 08:47 PM

Some "bad" movies with the MST3k (Mystery Science Theater 3000) treatment have a second life as a "good" MST3k episode. I thought that "Mitchell" is a classic...

frankgrimes 07-22-2003 09:00 PM

you're right, livewire," romy and michelle" is very good- funny. How about "wild things"?

th0r 07-26-2003 07:07 PM

"The People Under The Stairs" - Wes Craven

This horror movie was so crap that it was funny!
Check it out here: http://us.imdb.com/Title?0105121

djflish 07-27-2003 10:48 AM

Tremors 3: Back to Perfection

I though this would really suck but its actuall quite enjoyable!
And Tremors 4 has just been finished, set in 1800! im not gonna raise my hopes about this one though

bryce1131 07-27-2003 10:54 AM

2 of the greatest movies ever that some of my friends cant stand are

Airplane
The Kentucky Fried Movie

dy156 07-27-2003 11:15 AM

Some of the movie ya'll have mentioned I don't consider bad movies, like About a Boy. I thought the critics liked it, and so did I.

good bad movies:
Major league-classic
Gremlins2-the whole Clamp/Trump thing was probably better in the early 90's and the video version is different from the one in the theaters. you'll see.
Amazon Women on the Moon (If you can find a copy of this, I highly recommend it. It's several short segments, many of them are extremely funny)
UHF -weird al, and I laughed in spite of myself
the Rock/Con Air

Speed_Gibson 07-27-2003 12:59 PM

Airplane 1&2 are two of my favourite movies out there. And these do not fall under the "bad film" category in any respect, but Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein are right up there on that list of classics on my list.

Quote:

hell yeah, have it on DVD - "Blacks with no soul" cut to David Allan Grier singing "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" :D

Speed_Gibson 07-27-2003 01:01 PM

One bad movie (cliched plot/ending, so-so delivery, etc) I liked was Passenger 57 with Wesley Snipes

Fisher 07-27-2003 08:55 PM

I agree with "October Sky" Can't agree with "Memento". A weird story told in a weird way does not make it great. "Groundhog Day" surprised me.

ComfortablyNumb 08-11-2004 03:07 PM

Yeah I though tGroundhog Day would be lame but I've lost count how many times I've watched it from beggining to end .

Ace_O_Spades 08-11-2004 05:12 PM

Zoolander is the only movie that comes to mind

saw the previews... thought "What a fucking retarded premise, and it looks awful"

then.... well... the rest is history

Don't forget, you get to see a lot of good looking girls running around naked. That's always a bonus.

I wanted to like Resident Evil, I really did. Not that I'm a fan of the games, but commandos vs. zombies is a kick ass idea. But the way they did it left a bad taste in my mouth. My biggest gripe, which ruined the movie for me is: The laser chamber.

A bad movie that I enjoy, while I wouldn't say is the best, has to be Zardoz. It has Sean Connery wearing a red speedo, riding people down on a horse and shooting them, and a giant flying stone head that tells it's followers "The gun is good. The penis is evil, the penis shoots seeds!" Absolutely bizarre, and the finest in 1970s british trash sci-fi.

roachboy 08-12-2004 04:49 AM

i have been watching sctv's network 90 dvd this week.
it is a whole series of really bad, really funny films.

Dwayne 08-12-2004 11:31 AM

Every Tremor Movie. :)

repeater 08-12-2004 11:56 AM

I thought zoolander looked like the stupidest movie when it was being advertised. Now it's one of my favorite movies of all time.

Lotronex 08-12-2004 03:27 PM

pauly shore movies, I love "In the Army Now" and "Biodome", even though they are incredibly stupid.
Also, not a movie, but I think "Iron Chef" fits the bill of "sounds stupid, but really good".

ShaniFaye 08-12-2004 03:34 PM

I have to add my votes to the others for

cabin boy
zoolander
Highlander

and add

Muriels Wedding
Willard (the remake)

thesupermikey 08-12-2004 05:37 PM

MANOS: The hands of fate. This movie so bad that 3 members of the cast killed themself within 6 month of the film being made.
