Cult Classics

I adore cheesy movies! Does anyone else like cult classics? Some favorites of mine, although some need some type of distraction, choose yours, to watch, are:
Plan 9 From Outer Space--Ed Wood
Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death
American Gothic-- it's just so bad
Living in Oblivion
can't think of more c.c. names now,
but other favorites are
Waking Life
The Fisher King
Patch Adams
Monster's Inc
Blair Witch Project, when everybody thought it was a "documentary"- or was that just me?
Harry Potter!
lots, I guess favorites is silly :)

Take care

shalafi 11-19-2003 03:53 PM

wow i thought i was the only one who had ever heard of Canibal Women of the Advocado Jungle of Death. How bout Hell Comes to Frog Town http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093171/

Lunchbox7 11-19-2003 04:50 PM

I like quite a few cult classics:
Armys of Darkness
Monkey
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking barrels
Snatch
Desperado
Donnie Darko
Rocky Horrer Show
Empire Records
Mallrats
Dogma
Most Jackie Chan movies
etc

bundy 11-19-2003 05:00 PM

bring it on
zoolander
American Psycho

are films that have attained cult status amongst my friends.

Ferris Bueller, Empire Records, Mallrats, the Breakfast Club, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, all Rockys, Audition, Jeanne et le garçon formidable, Les Misérables, Astérix & Obélix, Amelie, Le Libertin, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Lantana, the Castle and are just a few more.

although Kill Bill has only been out a little while... thats definitely a Cult Classic already.

Lunchbox7 11-19-2003 07:08 PM

Yeah I forgot Breakfast club, and the Rockys

Psivage 11-19-2003 07:09 PM

What makes a movie a Cult Classic? Some of movies that been mention are pretty popular. I always thought a Cult Classic is an movie that is release and doesn't gain much attention, but on video word of mouth gets out.

Bloodslick 11-19-2003 07:33 PM

I'm as confused as Psivage. I wasn't aware that half of those movies were considered "cult classics". Apparently, cult classics are nearly the only films I enjoy.

Tophat665 11-19-2003 07:52 PM

I've heard of but never seen Cannibal Women in the Avacado Jungle of Death, ditto Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell and Surf Nazis Must Die. Troma just has the best titles ever.

Another one that I'd like to see at some point is "Night of the Blood Llama" if only for the line "Does everything from Texas spit toxic cud?"

Not sure if "They Call Me Trinity" and "Trinity is Still My Name" count for cult, but, if they do, they're up there. "The Advenures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the Eight Dimension" is almost certainly cult, and that's a great one. "It's Big Boo-Tay! Big Boo-Tay!"

Rocky Horror probably counts as does Army of Darkness.

Donnie Darko might count if it is merely a matter of lack of initial popularity, but I was under the impression that most cult flicks aren't good because they're good stories, but because they're so bad that they're funny. Ed Wood's opus is the benchmark. If that's the case, then Donnie Darko is not in that category.

Let me make it perfectly clear that no John Hughes movie is a cult classic, and no movie that tries to be a John Hughes movie is a cult classic. If it's largely about teens or tweens acting adorably angsty, then it ain't cult. Think less John Hughs and more John Waters, less Rob Lowe, more Divine.

Conan the Republican was never in a cult movie, nor was Sly Stallone. Try Roddy Piper. Another one I haven't seen, but I've heard good things about: They Live.

diergray 11-19-2003 08:54 PM

They Live should definitely be on the list.

Amazon Women on the Moon
The Kentucky Fried Movie
Shaolin Master Killer
Omega Man

Xiangsu 11-19-2003 11:33 PM

How about Fight Club? If that isn't a cult classic I dont know what is.

RedCometChar 11-19-2003 11:41 PM

I dunno... Sixteen Candles is pretty cult-y. And a personal favorite cult flick is The Villain, featuring Ah-nuld, Ann-Margret, and Kirk Douglas. It was a comedy western, about Douglas trying a bunch of Wile E. Coyote type-tricks (like painting a tunnel on a cliff-face) to kidnap Ann-Marget. She kisses him at the end and he hops around like Daffy Duck. :D

They Live is a great movie... there's a scene in the middle where Roddy Piper and Keith David beat the shit out of each other for fifteen minutes, over David's refusal to wear alien-spotting sunglasses. Utterly hilarious, because every time you think they've had enough, they start up again.

Surf Nazis is a movie you're better off reading about than actually spending money on. :D I fell in love with the title, and ended up disappointed. Much better movies from Troma include Sgt. Kabukiman- NYPD, Nuke 'Em High, and Terror Firmer (features Ron Jeremy, as a mangled incestuous child molester. In a cage, in his son's apartment. ).

Jeff 11-19-2003 11:50 PM

Slackers and Office Space I suppose could count, eh?

im2smrt4u 11-20-2003 12:25 AM

I'd say the Jersey Trilogy and the Mel Brooks' movies rank up there.

anti fishstick 11-20-2003 12:42 AM

i'm not sure if i know the right definition of cult classic but

rocky horror definately
kevin smith films (especially clerks, mallrats and chasing amy)
mel brooks films (history of the world part I, silent movie)
better off dead
cavemen
edit: also monty python movies. esp. meaning of life and the holy grail

Batman976 11-20-2003 08:37 AM

I agree with Tophat665's definition of the cult classics. No Kevin Smith movie is a cult classic. Ed Wood's movies, on the other hand, are definately cult classics. Troma movies (probably with the exception of Cannibal! The Musical) are cult classics.

I'd say any movie with a fan base larger than Rocky Horror Picture Show shouldn't be counted as one. That's probably as big as cult fan bases get.

Averett 11-20-2003 11:11 AM

The Princess Bride

sleepingbeauty 11-20-2003 12:10 PM

I really was tired yesterday, a lot of the movies mentioned are freaking great! I watch office space on a weekly basis.

SabrinaFair 11-20-2003 01:13 PM

To me, Rocky Horror Picture Show will always be the DEFINITIVE cult classic.

EbolaVirus 11-20-2003 01:32 PM

Army of Darkness and the Evil Dead 1 and 2

wrongfullyaccuzd 11-20-2003 02:45 PM

ok i agree with a lot of the movies, american psycho, lock stock, etc etc, but now that i'm clear this thread is full of weirdos like me who like unheard of movies...not that the ones i just named are in any way unheard of...anyway i don't mean to offend with the name, but has anyone heard of "Gay Niggers from Outer Space"? a friend of mine told me about it, and it has a freakin entry on imdb, but like...there's some stuff on it online...but i want to hear about it from someone who's seen it. from what i gather it's a comedy...
again, sorry to offend if i did.

Plan9Senior 11-20-2003 07:09 PM

A lot of the movies listed on here arent even cult classics :p

By the way, the Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead are the ultimate cult classics :)...oh and Clockwork Orange too!

I love Adventures of Baron Munchausen. I haven't seen it in years, but I always thought it was great. I need to rent that, but I wish I could rent the dvd:( .

Neato 11-20-2003 11:48 PM

Anyone ever see "Death Row Dinner"? :D

A group of my friends of one of my friends watches really bad B movies all the time. I started going after they had been doing it for quite some time. Death Row Dinner is the worst movie we watched while I was doing, but they seemed to like a few...
Meet the Feebles is one they always talked about.

Man, I hate that movie. I talked about it in one of the three or so LOTR threads going right now.

strife 11-21-2003 05:45 AM

Boonddock Saints. (Really suprised this hadn't been mentioned)
Donnie Darko (Unclear if that's a cult classic or not)

Those are probably my only two real cult classic favorties.

Gortexfogg 11-21-2003 06:06 AM

The Abomidable Dr. Phibes
Local Hero

diergray 11-21-2003 07:13 AM

What about Death Race 2000!

Damn, I fogot about that one too. that was one of the first DVD's I bought.

djflish 11-21-2003 11:31 AM

If you like cult classics, then you must have heard of Withnail & I.

Or is it just a cult classic in the UK?

JazzmanAl 11-21-2003 08:03 PM

Hedwig and the Angry Inch. If you haven't seen it, you should.

rockzilla 11-21-2003 08:33 PM

Me too, I was reading through and thinking of it and it never came up! Congrats to you for picking it out.

I'd have to add A Clockwork Orange for definite, and I've not seen it on this list (i don't think). Also The Crow, and Dark City.

anleja 10-20-2004 05:04 PM

Reviving an old thread here, but...

John Waters' "Polyester." This movie is so bad and strange I can't help but to love it.

Irishsean 10-20-2004 07:20 PM

Evil Dead
Evil Dead 2
Army of Darkness
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Mars Attacks
Top Gun

MoonbatKillah 10-20-2004 07:36 PM

The original "Willard" from the 70's is pretty good.
Now and forever "UHF"

tropple 10-21-2004 11:52 AM

Rocky Horror Picture Show and Kentucky Fried Movie are good examples.

I also feel that in the fullness of time, Lone Star State of Mind as well as Super Troopers will achieve this exalted status. Besides, I'm hot for "Baby."

mkultra 10-21-2004 01:01 PM

All I have to say is: Six String Samurai

Alternate history where the bomb dropped and world is a wasteland except 'Lost Vegas' where Elvis has been crowned king? CHECK

Buddy Holly traveling the wastes with a six string guitar and a katana fighting off scavangers, a bowling team turned assasins, and the invading Russian army so that he can claim his place on the now dead Elvis' throne as the new king of rock and rolla? CHECK

Death and his minions personified as a black tophat wearing metal band? CHECK

Bad-ass true rock and roll soundtrack? CHECK

"Now bow before the might of heavy metal!" - Death

espi 10-21-2004 02:01 PM

I'm gonna second Hedwig and the Angry Inch, although I don't know if it's old enough to be a "cult classic" yet. But, it does get the same audience participation and shadow actors that you see at RHPS screenings.

I'm also going to have to disagree with a lot of the nominations here. If the movie was released in the past five years, it certainly can't be considered a "classic" yet. (Thus my reservations about Hedwig). And, if the movie was released in mainstream theaters with mostly mainstream actors (Old School, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Office Space, etc.), it can't be cult.

TexanAvenger 10-21-2004 07:56 PM

Mine're:

Donnie Darko
Do The Right Thing
The Evil Dead movies
Incubus
Office Space, though I doubt it's really considered "cult"
Breakfast Club
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
12 Monkies
Pi

They Live is a favorite of mine. that fight scene never ends!

they've probably already been mentioned, but in case they haven't, i'd throw in peter jackson's pre-LotR movies in the mix, particularly Meet the Feebles, Bad Taste and Dead Alive.

i think anything with Bruce Campbell in it would qualify as a cult classic (and, in my opinion, worth watching), particularly if it was directed by Sam Raimi.

oh, wait... i may have to take that back. he did have a cameo in at least one of the Spider-Man flicks, didn't he?

anyway, just voicing my agreement with the fact that the ED flicks rock! :D

walkerboh4269 10-22-2004 05:13 PM

Eraserhead....Best.....Cult......Movie......Ever.

Also don't forget el Topo, Holy Mountain,And Santa Sangre. Alejandro Jodorwsky rocks.

runtuff 10-22-2004 05:16 PM

What a great list of movies. Cool, I've got to check out a few of these I missed.

Redjake 10-22-2004 06:08 PM

Boondock Saints
Desperado
Army of Darkness (I have the t-shirt)
Princess Bride
Blues Brothers (fav. movie of all time)
Breakfast Club

Baldrick 10-22-2004 07:39 PM

I don't consider half of these movies as "cult classics", as they have become so cool that they're now mainstream.

However, some favorites of mine are Blood of Heroes, Master of the Flying Guillotine (best martial arts movie EVER), and Final Countdown. :D

Val_1 10-23-2004 12:45 PM

The Wicker Man
Bitter Moon (disturbing)
Blue Velvet (and any other Davis Lynch film for that matter)
A Boy and His Dog
Reefer Madness
Altered States
Motorama
Zardoz

My all time fave, The Lair of the White Worm (one Hugh Grant doesn't put on him resume

Johnny Pyro 07-23-2005 06:26 AM

A Clockwork Orange is brillant. Stanley Kubrick is a genius.

Coppertop 07-23-2005 08:47 AM

Meet the Feebles. And how about:

Man With The Screaming Brain?

Acornbud 07-23-2005 02:19 PM

And before LOTR
Braindead
Bad Taste (a very well named flick, indeed!)
(along with) Meet the Feebles

And another that should be a cult classic, imo
The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb

Bad Taste is an awesome early Peter Jackson movie!

Also his other one which is better is Dead Alive. Real Classics! :D
