Good horror movies
My girl and I want to rent some real horror movies for this halloween night. Does anyone have some suggestions for some? We have a small list, we're only going to rent about 3 I think. Got them mostly from IMDB's Top 50 Horror Movies.
The Evil Dead (She hasn't seen it but I have) Night of the Living Dead The Thing And as backups incase we can't get those - The Shining Silence of the Lambs Are these good picks, or should we go for something different? Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

I have been watching through the Friday the 13th series and really enjoying them I don't know that I would actually call them scary, but the first few especially are quite good.
Nightmare on elm street on the other hand, wasn't very good at all, the only good scene involves johnny depp and about 500 gallons of blood.

While the Thing is a classic, its not really a great date type movie. I own it, but I think I've only watched it twice. Not really scary in a sense that you should sit and watch it with your girl.
Not a classic, but I just watched it and rather enjoyed it, its pretty new: Wrong Turn. |

You gotta get out Ring, Ring 2 and Ring 0 (they're japanese with subs, but visually, freakin scary). if you can't find the japanese Ring series anyway, you could get "The Ring" which is a half-decent american remake.
You could also go for Alien, and Aliens, which are masterpieces. And Event Horizon. Oh, another good japanese movie is "Dark Water" if you can find it anywhere, and a Chinese (?) one called "The Eye" - I tend to find these far more frightening than the mainstream western horror movies...

I'd put in a vote for "28 Days Later" Not your typical horror movie but still pretty good.
If you'd like some humor with your horror, I'd suggest either "Dawn of the Dead" or "Return of the Living Dead"

I wouldn't exactly call Silence of the Lambs horror. More of a suspense flick.
The original Children of the Corn is a pretty good one.

The Thing is definitely a good choice. My favorite movie of all time. You are right, it's not really a date movie but it is downright scary.
I would also recommend Sphere the movie , however it's not really horror and more Sci-fi. Some very intriguing and scary moments though. Have fun. |

Not real horrifying. Not real deep. Lots of action. Prophetic. Decent movie. -Identity- Old storyline. New twist. Respectable amounts of gore. Better than expected. -Ghost Ship- Different. Excellent FX Good gore. Don't miss the beginning. Good movie. |

oh God, don't rent Ghost Ship...that was probably one of the worst movies I've ever seen. And yea, Silence of the Lambs is more suspence...me, House on Haunted Hill scared the shit out of the me the first time. Also 13 Ghosts, but then again, I scare pretty easy, just check it out if you want.

I just saw the original version of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and was completely amazed and fucked. It's amazing how many other movies since this one have obviously been influenced by it... and for just being sheer fucked up and scary, it does it so damn well. Aside from maybe the first Friday the 13th no movie has set the tone so well and gotten me into the mindset to piss my pants so well...

Watch the original "The Haunting" - a creepy haunted house movie.... fear is enhanced by what you don't see as apposed to overdone FX.
Also, I recommend a lil' dark horse 70's film called "The Changling" starring George C. Scott. Once again, another creepy house movie. Overacting aside and a few campy "experimental" shots, it's a very effective movie that gets frights from a well paced storyline and opts for audio instead of FX. Want a smart horror flick? Ya know, the type where you're not yelling at the TV? Rent "Dawn of the Dead." Best. Zombie. Movie. EVER.

No, no, no.... don't rent The Changling. I just watched it a couple of days ago. That movie's terrible. And scary for all of 3 seconds and then it just gets stupid. Maybe I just had a bad copy of it, but I thought the audio was ill timed and poorly done, not even remotely scary sounds. The begining was cool and well done, but the ending was just plain dumb. I mean, not to ruin it for anyone, the "ghost" was just stupid and random in it's actions. It kills people in spectacular ways for no reason, then people it should kill, it does nothing against.
Like I said, I don't want to ruin it for anyone that may want to watch it, but if you're looking to be scared go rent something with Winona Ryder in it.

Final Destination. Thought it was cool. It was a good deviation from the teen slasher flick, and the characters weren't idiots.

the Shining Event Horizon 28 Days Later Silence of the Lambs The Exorcist The Ring not sure if the Omen has been mentioned... but thats a pretty good old classic. and i also suggest Audition... it´ll leave you cowering... just like it says it will...

I personally love the Shining. Glad to see it is on your list, its a good one. It (like all Kunrick films) has many layers to it, and may be a bit confusing the first time through, but it is a quite scary movie. The superb acting really brings it out--Jack Nicholson is *perfect* for the part. It is not only my favorite horror film, but is one of my favorite films period. It really is a masterful work, and is one that you can watch many a time.

The Shining, The Thing, and The Omen are all definitely great choices. The first Puppet Master was actually very good, and you really can't go wrong with The Exorcist or Exorcist III. Skip Exorcist II though...

I like House on Haunted Hill any version.The 1st Friday the 13th,The Exorcist,Ya'll probably will think I stupid for this one,but The Blair Witch Project I liked it because it reminded me of the old movies that didn't need all the blood and gore.

I'm glad so many other people like, or atleast were scared by, Event Horizon. Such a funny movie in places, the things some of the characters say are just absurd, but the movie is actually very scary. The circuit-board tunnel scene is one of my favorite of any movie.
I'm glad someone mentioned The Thing (John Carpenter's version) I'd forgotten about that frightening gem. I'm glad that no matter how many times I watch these staple horror movies and no matter how old I get they still remain scary as hell. There's nothing worse that remembering some movie that scared the hell out of me when I was younger and then watching and finding it to be not only not scary now, but stupid. Runaway (with Magnum PI and the dude from Kiss) scared the hell out of me as a kid, but in all actuality it's a dumb ass movie. Speaking of which, does anyone remember a movie where kids would walkout into a "fog" and then their fingernails would turn black and they would go all zombie and attack people? Burning them with their hands? It's not The FOG, that's a different movie. But anyway this "fog" movie scared the crap outta me a kid. I wonder if it's actually stupid..... help me out if you can. |

I'll second whoever mentioned 'The Eye' (yes, it was a Chinese movie). It is far, far scarier than the similarly-themed Sixth Sense and more entertaining too. Don't wait for the yankee remake that's going to come out and ruin it, definately get the original.
28 Days later is also fantastic.
