the proper pronuciantion of "akira"
I was given Akira to me on dvd for my bday. The version I watched pronouced it "Aah-kee-ra" and his friend "Khan-e-da". The previous versions I've seen it prounced it "Aa-keer-a" and "Kan-nay-da".
Anyone know the right English way of saying it? |
I dunno. I've always pronounced it Uh-kee-ra.
On a side note I know a guy who loved this movie so much he named his first kid Akira. |
It's ah-KEE-ra. The japanese language is built more on syllables for what we think of as letters. So "ah" would be one 'letter', "ki (pronounced KEE)" would be another and "ra (which would sound strange to us, because they pronounce their r syllables differently)" is the last.
In short, you were right. Note: I only have a VERY basic understanding of the Japanese language, so I could be wrong, which I'm sure someone will point out if I am. |
From what I know, in Japanese, you end most syllables with vowel sounds, so it would be Ah-Kee-Ra, and not Ah-Keer-a
As for Kaneda, you get the N fault and end a syllable on that, but not extending it on to the next syllable Kan-e-da, or Ka-ne-da. |
Yeah, Ah-Kee-Rah is the proper way to pronounce it, and that's the one they use in the new dub. However, even though I know that's right, I still use Uh-Kee-Ruh when I'm actually discussing it with someone. Just rolls off the tongue more naturally.:)

I think it goes a little something like this- AH-kee-ra. Emphasis on the first syllable. I could be wrong, though.

|
I pronounce it AH-KWEEE-JI-MO.
Seriously, I'm pretty sure it's AH-KEE-RAH |
