Jessica Biel Signs On To Bash Bloodsuckers In 'Blade 3'

10.03.2003 7:59 AM EDT

HOLLYWOOD — Not only is Blade returning to kill more vampires in a back-to-basics sort of way, but he's bringing some new blood with him as well.

Jessica Biel has joined the cast of "Blade 3," the latest movie about the half-human/half-vampire badass — famously (and fangedly) played by Wesley Snipes — who was plucked from the pages of Marvel's "Tomb of Dracula" comic books.

Last year's "Blade 2" took in $86.1 million in the United States alone, besting the first flick's $70 million haul that helped reignite the comic-book movie genre after the critically reviled "Batman & Robin" seemed to grind things to a halt.

In the first film, Snipes pretty much just knocked off vampires left and right, but the sequel's storyline became a bit more complex. Biel, best known for her breakout role as Mary on the WB's "Seventh Heaven," said "Blade 3" will be back-to-basics.

"We're reverting back to the original idea of 'Blade,' " she said while hanging around Hollywood's famous Chateau Marmont hotel, talking to the press about another of her upcoming films, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (see "Jessica Biel Says 'Chainsaw' Remake Will Retain Original's Spirit").

"I think 'Blade 2' is great, but it kind of had a different vibe, a different feeling to it [and] a different look," she said. "All of the fighting, all of the costumes — this is back to the beginning. It's [a] clean slate. It's going to be very much like 'Blade.' "

One thing that'll help maintain continuity between the three "Blade" films is that David Goyer, who wrote all of them, has now taken over directorial duties.

Biel promised that Goyer's approach to "Blade 3"'s many action sequences will eschew the recent trend of "Matrix"- and "Crouching Tiger"-like theatrics in favor of more visceral fisticuffs.

"The action is gritty," she said. "It's raw. It's real. [There are] no wires, no flying people on trees. We're talking old-school boxing techniques and real-life street fighting. That's what's [really] gonna make it back-to-basics.

"And I think that's what the action genre [and] the action [fan] community is looking for," she said. "It's great, all this cool [wire work and computer-generated] stuff, it looks great, it's different. But we need to go back. It's time to go back."

In the movie, Biel plays Abigail, the tough, vampire-killing daughter of Kris Kristofferson's Abraham Whistler character. She's part of a team of human vampire hunters called The Nightstalkers (which also includes "Van Wilder" star Ryan Reynolds) who join forces with Blade to stop the vampires' latest nefarious plot. Apparently, Biel's team is so kick-ass that there have even been whispers of a possible "Nightstalkers" spinoff flick.

"We're training our butts off to make this movie [look] realistic — to make [it] look like we can do these martial arts and [like] we can carry these heavy guns and these big arrows, these bows that I carry. It's gonna be rockin'."

In addition to Biel, Snipes and Reynolds, the "Blade 3" cast will include Parker Posey ("Josie and the Pussycats") and Dominic Purcell ("Mission: Impossible II"), who'll play the Dracula-like, über-vampire Frank Drake, who is awakened from a long slumber.

"Blade" fans will have to wait until next fall to see the movie, but in the meantime Biel can be seen in the aforementioned "Chainsaw" remake, which opens October 17.

Sounds like a winner. The film could be even better than the original.

I looked on IMDB to see the cast creds. and came across a link to another article about this before they cast some of the players.
Here's the IMDB page, the cast, and the article from the other site:

“Blade III” Getting Sharpened for a September 22nd Shooting Start
Written 07-08-2003 by ChrisFaile

“The Daywalker” returns to the cinema screen yet again and faces an adversary that will be his greatest match yet— a vampire that predates even Dracula. Pre-production for the second sequel in the “Blade” franchise, “Blade III,” is now in full swing, with the lead roles of the new players now in the hands of casting agents (which we have been able to obtain). According to sources close to the production, the New Line film (bringing back Wesley Snipes in the central role, with Kris Kristofferson also set to star) will begin principal photography September 22 in Vancouver.

The storyline for the third film finds Blade joining forces with two vampire hunters, part of a group called the Nightstalkers, as they tackle the powerful and ruthless villain Danica Talos. After harvesting the superior blood of the ancestor of all modern vampires, Talos has resurrected the man now known as “Drake” (notice the modernization of the Dracula name) from a century-long sleep in the hopes of finally getting world control for all vampires. Blade, along with the Nightstalkers must unleash a virus that will kill all vamps— but only are given one chance to make it work.

Among the roles still to be cast and which the film’s casting director is looking to fill are:

Abigail Whistler: A beautiful Caucasian woman in her 20s, Abigail is “cut like an Olympic athlete” and equipped with a walking arsenal of vampire-fighting weapons. Abigail is the daughter of Blade’s old partner Whistler (played by Kristofferson), and, like him, she’s an accomplished, deadly vampire hunter who lives and works with the Nightstalkers. Described in the casting notes as “determined, ruthless and unique (she likes to listen to her own music playlists on an MP3 player as she fights),” Abigail saw her whole family destroyed by vampires and, as she puts it in the film’s script, “Ever since I can remember I’ve had this knife of sadness in my heart. As long as it stays there, I’m untouchable. But the moment I pull it out—I’ll die.”

Hannibal King: In his 30s, King is described as “an audacious vampire hunter with a flair for drama and often sporting an irrepressible grin.” He works with the Nightstalkers, having been saved by a scientist there after he was turned into a vampire himself by Talos and is an accomplished fighter with a wicked sense of humor and a seemingly endless supply of pretty good vampire jokes. Courageous and strong, with unbelievable stamina, King is captured by Talos and her henchmen in the film and beaten within an inch of his life—but the one vulnerable point he has (which Danica capitalizes on) is his terror of being forced to become a vampire again.

Drake: The granddaddy of all vampires, not merely Count Dracula but a creature whose origins go back to ancient Sumeria, he’s endured centuries of upheaval and war, and has been summoned from a 100 year long sleep. And he’s not happy about it. An articulate and unspeakably strong “blur of bestial rage and unfettered horror,” Drake has a DNA peculiarity that allows him to be able to withstand the daytime’s sun, unlike modern vampires. He wants to use his blood to improve on their own physicality and ensure their future survival. An accomplished shape-shifter because of his mutable bone and cartilage, Drake wants nothing less than to be a god among his people, and acknowledges a worthy adversary in Blade (who, after all, is a hybrid who shares some vampire characteristics). The producers of the film are looking for an actor with an international presence.

Danica Talos: An “intense, intelligent, beautiful and voracious” vampire with a regal air who appears to be in her early 30s to mid 40s, she’s the head of a band of vampires who’ve resurrected the ancient vampire “Dracula/Drake” in order to harvest his superior blood. Danica (who begins sleeping with Drake upon his resurrection) mobilizes her forces against the vampire hunters and engages in some intense pitched battles with Blade, Abigail and King.

Other roles also being cast include: Edgar Vance, a smooth talking pundit who firmly pooh-poohs the existence of vampires and publicly brands the outlaw Blade as a very sick individual (when, in fact, viewers learn that he believes very much in vampires, and is a “familiar” to them); Zoe, a 5-year-old whose mother is a scientist within the Nightstalker “family” and is watched over by Abigail; Grimwood, a hulking vampire with an imposing physique and an even more imposing set of surgical steel teeth/fangs; Asher, a natural born leader with an easygoing charisma, who is an accomplished fighter that has become a vampire; and Martin Vreede, another “familiar” who, as the chief of police, tells the public that Blade is a deranged individual who is himself the threat to society.

David Goyer, who has written the previous two installments of the comic book adaptation as well as this film’s screenplay, is set to helm. “Blade” and its first sequel earned $277 million worldwide.

The Scorecard
Producers: Lynn Harris, Peter Frankfurt
Director/Writer: David Goyer
Casting Director: Ronnie Yeskel
Start Date: September 22, 2003
Location: Vancouver"

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Mind_Storm.
I, for one, can't wait for this.
I wish they had picked someone besides Parker Posey, though.
She just doesn't strike me as the vampire type.
Who knows, she may steal the movie.

Wow. I haven't seen the second Blade yet, but it's been on my list. I'll definitely have to get it before long. Thanks for the info on the new film.

By the way, how would you compare Blade 2 against Underworld?

I though Blade II was good, a great action flick but Blade 1 is classic, action, story, depth and a whole lot of style. Blade II seemed to focus more on the style.

I really liked Blade, and thought Blade 2 was okay. But this one sounds great! I think Ryan Reynolds is one of the better up and coming actors, and I'm in love with Parker Posey, so this has alot of potential.

AMEN!

Bout damn time I'm sick a these ropes n computer effects. Shit is cheap and they always way overdue it and it looks ridiculous as all hell. I can't wait to see this one now. I've always loved Wesley and his fighting style. He was up there with my favorites back in the day. Him and Seagal.

I thought the original plot for blade two was going to be Blade Vs Morbius? I spose they still didn't secure the rights for it... YET! This looks like a great plot for a third. I love the movies. Now if you think about it, Morbius is no... common Vampire. He was created similar to how spiderman was created. Thus if you follow the "Time Line" thats flowing with these movies. After they third they should have knocked off "Grand Daddy".... kill the leader and it looks freaky and all, but morbius is a loner. Damn, now I'm hoping for Blade 4. I wanna see the third don't get me wrong, but Blade Vs Morbius, how sweet is that?

I was wondering when the fuck they were gonna put Morbius in the fuckin movie. I thought he was gonna be in the first one. Morbius is my favorite character probably he just looks dope as fuck when I saw the first I was thinkin "Blade? Thats the dude who's always tryin to kill Morbius & Spider Man stops him." I thought "Dope maybe he'll be in the movie too" but I guess not. Morbius is the fuckin man. He didn't choose to be that way and he only sucks off the evil people n shit. Blade Vs Morbius would be the battle a all battles right der but I wonder if they'd ever try to put him n Spidey in the same movie.

I think the working title is Blade 3: Trinity.

Parker Posey is also in the cast.

I bought Blade 2 without seeing it in theaters, but wasn't let down. I have no reason to suspect Blade 3 of being anything less. I'm looking forward to it. Wesley Snipes is perfect for the role. Of course I never read anything Blade related in the comics, but he seems perfect to me.
