Man.. I was going to try to name just one movie for each decade, but some of those are just too good! I'm gonna have to limit myself to three. I was born in 81, so I'll start with the 70's and go back. I know I'm going to leave a lot of great ones out too.
1970's: Apocalypse Now The Godfather One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest 1960's: 8 1/2 2001: A Space Odyssey Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb 1950's: Seven Samurai (Wow, I need to see more 50's movies!) 1940's: Casablanca Citizen Kane Spellbound 1930's: King Kong Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs The Wizard of Oz |
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938 version). In my opinion, the single greatest movie soundtrack EVER, by Erich Korngold.
Starring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, Basil Rathbone, Claude Rains, Alan Hale (better known on Gilligan's Island), and the fabulous Una O'Connor. My God, what a movie. |
I've just bought The Hustler on DVD. Classic!
Spartacus and Captain Horatio Hornblower with Gregory Peck |

http://www.factmonster.com/ipka/A0761529.html I agree with you, this version of Robin Hood is my favorite, the music pulls you in and makes your blood start pumping through your veins. You feel like you're in the forest or fighting the Sheriffs' men with a deer thrown over your shoulders. Spectacular! |
Midnight Cowboy I saw as a fetus.
|
theres so many... so iŽll just list a few.
Dr Strangelove. The Third Man Citizen Kane To Kill A Mockingbird Arsenic & Old Lace Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory Roman Holiday (all Billy Wilder films) and so on... |
The Ten Commandments is one of my favorites. I try to watch it every few years when they play it before Easter. Yul Brenner is just too cool.
I saw The Agony and the Ecstasy with Rex Harrison and Charlton Heston once, it was great. I would love to see that movie again. Of course, I can't forget to mention Ben Hur. Hmm, I seem to have a thing for Charlton Heston movies :) |

Many people will also remember a Bugs Bunny cartoon where Bugs somehow goes back in time to medieval England (must've been that left turn at Alberquerque). During this episode, Bugs keeps running into a bloated Little John who keeps saying over and over, "Don't you worry, never fear. Robin Hood will soon be here." Finally, in frustration, Bugs snaps at the poor guy, which is followed by (of course) an appearance by Robin Hood. However, the Robin Hood that appears is Errol Flynn as he swings like Tarzan and lands on the limb of a tree in Sherwood and is about to welcome the Lady Marian to his hideout. Wonderful scene! |

That wasn't him, it was his father, Alan Hale, Sr. :) |
Cool Hand Luke and I'll second The Great Escape.
|
Casablanca was a great movie of course. I've yet to see Citizen Kane, its on my list...
I always liked Vertigo (Hitchcock). Very weird movie, and that music... |
An underrated but very good Coppola film that I think everyone should see is The Conversation. Pretty damn good direction.
|
The General (starring Buster Keaton) must be the best silent movie ever. :D And he actually does all the stunts himself!
