Eddie Murphy. What went wrong?
Ok, private life aside, just focusing on comedy and acting here, what the hell happened to Eddie Murphy?
I was watching Coming To America tonight and it's a really funny film. Not only that, it's a good film too. How can a man that did films such as Trading Places, Coming to America, Beverly Hills Cop 1 + 2 (not 3) and to a lesser extent The Golden Child be churning out crap like The Adventures of Pluto Nash and Daddy Day Care? I don't know what happened to him, but he really fell off. When I was younger he used to be my favourite actor (mainly because Beverly Hills Cop 1 + 2) were 2 of my favourite films, but all his newer stuff is pretty bad. Nutty Professor is alright, and I kind of liked Metro, but NP 2 and the two Dr. Dolittle's are bad. I reckon he should go back to his roots of stand up comedy and get his shit sorted out. Then maybe he'll give us something decent to watch. Life wasnt too bad either, and although it's pretty lame, I kind of like Vampire In Brooklyn, but another one of late, I Spy I think it's called was shite again. |
I Spy was bullsdick, hid old school stand-up is classic. I think that his comedy of late is an attempt to appeal to a wider audience, and a younger one.
|
Yeah, I think his problem is that as he is growing older he is moving into a more family-oriented comedy area. In other words, he needs to fire his agent about three years ago...
|
I think he grew up! I remember the good ol days listening to cassettes of Eddie Murphy Raw and other greatest hits. I had to listen to it in my walkman at home besause my mom would kill me if she heard me listening to it. (she had a difficult time of it when she heard 2 Live Crew for the first time).
I just think his old "raw" performances that made him famous, also made him want to disassociate himself from that image when he aged. Basically, because there is no more money left in it for him, his movies got tamer over time. |
same thing that happened to Prince, Madonna, and Vanity. They all matured and realized something precious about life.
|
He got married and had kids.
I actually watched Raw again for the first time in ages last night. Still hilarious and classic comedy |
his movies are still making money, so why should he change.
|
Pluto Nash wasnt THAT bad...It was just a different comedy. I kind of enjoyed it.
|
Nutty Professer.
|
What happened to eddy murphy? He stopped stealing material of richard pryor and tried to do his own thing, which is why he aint funny no more.
|
He was 21 when he did his stand-up routine 'Delirious' - which was some of the greatest comedy ever written, and his career has been in free-fall ever since.
Seems he's content in just getting those big pay-cheques for making crap kiddie movies. |
I actually liked Dr. Doolittle 2, but mainly for the animals. The raccoon and bear are fuckin' hilarious.

I think WE changed and he stayed the same. You have to move your talents and comedy to reflect society. How funny do we find guys like dice clay and joe piscopoe(?). They are still '80s comics
|
one of the more funnier skits from SNL is david spades hollywood minute...
eddie murphy picture comes up and spade says "look children, its a falling star" (this was around 93-94, and oh, how right he was) |
He needs to go back to stand-up to get that edge back.
Beside I'd like to see all the new material he would have, now that he's lived a few more year and he's a father now. That and he needs to stop playing to the camera, just be cocky and do his stuff. Get his sarcasm back. |
He needs to retire, so he can keep at least some of his dignity.
|
|
I really wish he would go back and do a couple of new stand-up movies. Raw and Delerious were funny as hell. I can still remember him talking about the ghetto hamburger with onions and stuff mixed in it. The poor kid just wanted McDonalds! :p
|
just donīt mention his Trannie fetish...
oh dammit - i just did... |
He can still be funny. I thought he was hysterical in Bowfinger (an underappreciated film). He did the smart thing and allowed himself to take a slightly more supportive role. He didn't have to carry the film, he found a solid script and it was funny.
His successful work now is based on gimmicks. Talking animals, animation or lots of makeup =success for him. Dr. Shrek Professor IV should make a great deal of money for him. |
It's a shame, coming to America and Trading spaces are two of the funniest movies out there.
|
DELIRIOUS DELIRIOUS DELIRIOUS
|
Coming to America was funny????
I thought it sucked. |
