What are your must watch shows on cableTV?
i've never had cable tv. gasp!
my wife hates tv and i never really watch that much anyway so we always thought it was crazy to spend 40-60$ a month on cable. now i might have access to some steeply reduced priced cable. what should i watch? 1. I usually watch only 10 hours of tv a week so i try to be selective. 2. there's not a single show i watch with regularity. the last time my wife and i watched a show together every week was the X-Files and early years of ally mcbeal. (both eye candy treats) 3. When i do watch i watch: sports!, the simpsons, married with children, king of the hill, nova, frontline, elimidate/fifth-wheel/blinddate,. i used to watch homicide. ER scares me. i also really enjoy some cooking shows. thanks for any recommendations. |
I watch teh funnies, cartoonish sitcoms. Simpsons, family guy, king of the hill, futurama and such nonsense.
|
Simpsons is a definite.
Only other show I watch religiously is Six Feet Under |
The Shield on FX is pretty good, pushes the limits of television little further.
|
adult swim, sunday nights, cartoon network.
free for all on showtime, friday nights those are about my only must sees atm, I think. |
Friends is a great choice, and theres always something cool on the history channel.
|
The only show I don't miss is Curb your Enthusiasm.
|
adult swim by far
|
Stargate
Dead like me and any anime I can find |
If you're gonna get prime cable and have to choose a between the movie channels, then go for HBO of course.
Project Greenlight Curb Your Enthusiasm Sopranos Six Feet Under THE WIRE (man anyone who hasn't seen it has to get into this show) Plus they got K Street and Carnival on the horizon. Yeah, personally I think one NEEDS cable. Besides the simpsons and few other select shows network T.V. can be launched into space for all I care. (Oh, and I agree with Pellaz, adult swim on sunday night is a must). |
Monk,Lucky,The Shield,Enterprize,Southpark
|
Law and Order reruns on TNT. Thanks, Ted Turner!
The Shield is also pretty damn quality, adult swim is gold... Surfing becomes an activity in and of itself, even if there's nothing on, so long as there are enough channels. |
On Cable? I'm a huge fan of the Monday night lineup on Discovery. Monster House, Monster Garage and American Chopper are quality.
|
gotta be The Daily Show. I don't have a tv this summer, so I just watch all the clips online to get my fill.
|
Parden The Interuption on ESPN @5:30pm EST weekdays
Family Guy on Cartoon Network @11:30pm EST MON-THU Mail Call on THe History Channel @ 10:00pm EST SUN |

Almost ANYTHING on hbo is good:
The Sopranos The Wire Curb Your Enthusiasm Six Feet Under Da Ali G Show Oz Random shows: howard stern dave chapelle show jon stewart show other than that i dont really have any favorite cable tv shows besides the ones that are in syndication from network tv. |
Tech TV
|
Unwrapped for a fun food fix
|
South Park, The Daily Show, and any stand-up on HBO or Comedy Central. I don't watch much tv though.
|
I'll third American Chopper.
Gotta have HBO for the Soprano's, tape Sex & th City for your wife and fastforward for the boobies, they have had several good fights on lately as well. They still show Band of Brothers every now and then as well. You can always find something of interest on the History channel, ESPN, FoxSports and TBS has the Braves. |
what is curb your enthusiasm, dead like me, and adult swim about?
i saw american chopper at my dad's one night. it was the one where they built the 911 memorial chopper. pretty cool. is oz good or just scary eye candy. |
I'll have to concur on Discovery Monday Night....
Monster House; Monster Garage; American Chopper The Dead Zone is alright, but you can't miss Monk Other than selected cartoons on Cartoon Network the only other show I watch religiously would have to The Daily Show....occasionally Colin Quinn's show is funny... |
the sheild
the simpsons, although it's not as good as it was cribs banzai I use to watch oz religiously but it's not on british cable. |
I pretty much watch Adult Swim on Cartoon Network and The Dead Zone on USA. That's about all the free time I have for tv anymore.
|
Simpsons Seinfeld and Southpark are my only must see programs... Southpark is probably my most watched program but now that Seinfeld is on like 6 times a day i am starting to see more and more of that.
|
Dead Like Me has fast become one of my favorite shows.
|
I have been watching dead like me and enjoying it, but I am not sure that I would watch if it were not the summer.
|
Lets see I have Direct TV, but....
Monday Night Raw Baseball Tonight Sunday night baseball/football Howard Stern I'm with Busey The Sopranos NFL Sunday Ticket Adult Swim Larry Sanders on Bravo [didn't have cable when it was on HBO] |
The only show on cable TV I look for is Curb Your Enthusiam.
|
Family Business on Showtime is a good "reality" show about a porn producer.
Cold Case Files on A&E is cool if you are into detective and police stuff. Same with Forensic Files on court TV. If you are into celebrity sightings, Celebrities Uncensored on E! is pretty funny. I record most of the stuff on my PVR Dish receiver and watch it later. |
The Wire
American Chopper |
Curb Your Enthusiasm
|
I love the Daily Show with John Stewart. Insomniac is good too.
Also, as people have mentioned, The Simpsons, Adult Swim, Seinfeld, The Shield, and Forensic Files are all quality shows. But if ER scares you, Forensic Files may not be for you. |
sportscenter....uhhh that's basically it
|

Sports Night, now that was a funny show. |
These days, the only things I go out of my way to watch are Samurai Jack, Dead Like Me, Iron Chef, and Gary the Rat, but I'll add football to that once the season gets rolling. But not on Monday. Madden blows goats. I have pictures.
|
Sopranos
|
I've been watching dead like me recently, and I thought it kinda sucked up until recently when they added that blonde chick from 24 to replace the noxzema girl. Another good Showtime series is Family Business --
|
Dead Like Me (Showtime)
Acme Hour (Cartoon Network) Sportscenter (ESPN) |
Cable TV? Only one real show I've been watching, The Wire on HBO. There isn't much else because everything else now is repeats.
|
Stargate SG-1 if you get the Sci Fi channel. It is the best sci-fi show ever. Like most sci-fi though, you need to watch it all from the beginning to actually know what's going on.
Family Guy on Cartoon Network (i think that's the channel) is hilarious. Skip the reality TV stuff, its like 99.5% extreme crap. |
Monk
American Chopper Monster Garage Sportscenter JAG reruns on USA Real World - It's a bad show, but I can't stop watching! |
Family Guy
|
Old thread, but what the hell...
Monster Garage -- they do amazing stuff to people's houses, and I like watching blue collar types bicker together. Discovery Good Eats -- best food show on television. Funny and educational. Food Network Stargate SG-1. I like science fiction anyway, but this is also almost a comedy at times. Like somebody said, you have to watch it from the beginning to understand it. But Sci-Fi shows the first five seasons in four-episode blocks each Monday evening, in order. So just wait until the beginning rolls around and start there. Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Like it a lot, but I think they need new gay guys. The current ones use the same schtick every week, and it's getting a little old. Bravo The Dead Zone, when it's on. USA Trading Spaces, but mainly for Frank Bielec. TLC. Garry Schandling reruns on Bravo -- never saw them before. I don't have pay cable, so I have to skip all those. Used to like Junkyard Wars, but the American version now officially sucks. |
Quote:
Monster Garage is great, as well. They take stock vehicles and transform them to make them perform tasks, like a doughnut maker, a lawnmower, a streetsweeper, and other more cool things. The deal is, they still have to look stock. |
South Park
The Chappelle Show Tough Crowd Daily Show With Jon Stewart Crank Yankers Friday Night Stand-Up On Comedy Central Family Guy Monday Night RAW Simpsons King Of The Hill Those are the only shows I look forward to, though I rarely get lucky enough to regularly tune in for many of those shows. |
most of the shows that air from 10-11 on comedy central
I have lost all faith in other chanels, sometimes catching some spike tv goodness. The appeal of the average sitcom has faded for me, too much bullshit piled into most of them for my likings |
The Daily Show with John Stewart, Crank Yankers, on Comedy Central
Johnny Bravo, Adult Swim and Space Ghost Coast to Coast on Cartoon Network Sponge Bob Square Pants on Nickelodeon Anything on the Discovery Channel |
At the moment the new series of Roswell
|
The Shield, the OC, and Friends are the only shows I watch on TV.
|
I dare not miss "Coupling" on BBC/America. This is the original that was copied to US network show. 100% better, in my opinion.
|

They are replaying the first two seasons every tuesday night at 10pm est. Check it out. Season 3 begins sometime in early 2004, and I can't wait. :) Other cable notables: MI-5, HBO shows,nip/tuck |
Well since this thread has been brought up, I have some new ones to add that I like now...
Nip/Tuck - I'm not sure why I like it, but it keeps me interested. Third Watch - Not necessarily only on cable, but it is a good show |
Nip Tuck, Monster House, Monster Garage, Law & Order, American Choppers.
|
Monster Garage
The Screen Savers Call for Help Most Extreme Challenge WWE Raw WWE SmackDown! The Sopranos Six Feet Under Carnivale Uranium Motor Trend Television MotorWeek Seinfeld The Man Show Insomniac with Dave Attell |
Southpark, Chappelle Show, Simpsons, Family Guy, Daily Show, Futurama, and 24.
Gotta love my tivo. |
Free-for-all and Family Business (showtime)
Adult Swim (cartoon network) Monster garage, house, American choppers, and myth busters (discovery) |
I can live without food and water, but I can't live without watching Sex and the City on HBO. I have every episode on tape, and have watched them all multiple times. Call me a SATC fanatic!
|
if you get tech tv with your cable package, i don't think you should ever have to watch anything else. I mean
Robot Wars - gotta be the best, grungiest show to have a good laugh at X Play - a good show for gaming, not much for t3h funny though TechLive - good for news about stuff going on in the world of technology The Screensavers - these guys are awesome, they're teaching the world not to be so fuckin stupid about computers and related items. I love it. |
Robot Wars -- 3 2 1 ACTIVATE!!! Ok, sorry. I love the show!
Junkyard Wars -- Rigged, but still entertaining! X-Play -- More entertaining that useful. Real TV -- Need I say more? :) -Lasereth |
Sunday - Simpsons and Alias
Monday - Everybody Loves Raymond, Monster Garage, Monster House Tuesday - 24, MI-5 (this is a much watch show!) Wed - Smallville, West Wing, Enterprise, South Park Thursday -> Saturday - Use Tivo to watch any of the above A lot of people mentioned some good shows on Tech TV, I would also add Invent This to the the list. |
The OC and Friends are the only shows that I have to watch each week. Otherwise, lately I've been trying to watch 30 minute meals on the Food Network.
|
the sheild
24 Sex and the City Hope and Faith ER Judging Amy I have started watching the Simple Life only cause it is funny The Osbournes |
The only thing I ever watch on TV is the history channel--and I dont watch any particular show, just whatever is on at the time.
|
Oz when it was on and the Sopranos.
|
Curb Your Enthusiam
The Shield Nip/Tuck |
Monster Garage, until they ran out of ideas...and American chopper. Too much good stuff for one channel!
|
I'm addicted to Monster House. Also I love "Penn & Teller: Bullshit!" on Showtime.
|
The Sopranos, Oz, Chappelle's Show, Kids In The Hall, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Miami Vice, The A-Team, Knight Rider, Seinfeld, Monster Garage, anything on the History channel, The Daily Show, and whatever I've TiVo'ed.
|

American Chopper, well every chance its on Monster Garage American Hotrod Good Eats, always Unwrapped Viva La Bam, always thats really about it |
Cable:
American Chopper Chapelle's Show The Realworld WWE Raw Network: 24 Enterprise Hope and Faith Joan of Acradia The Late Show WWE Smackdown |
Alright if someone was holding a gun to my head asking me to choose between either The OC or American Idol I don't know what I'd do. Don't laugh! haha
Along with those, it's definately The Real World, Newlyweds (funny shit), American Chopper, Forensic Files (and the fact that I don't get CourtTV right now is killing me) and The Apprentice. |
Sigh...I miss cable TV. We get AFN here, and all the shows are a season behind.
When I'm visiting home, though, I'm all about VH1 (huge Behind the Music and I Love the 80s fan), Comedy Central (especially the stand-up), and the Discovery Channel. I'll usually catch a few Buffy reruns as well, but fX cuts them all to hell to make room for more commercials. :| |
South Park
Adult Swim Angel Smallville |

West Wing- Bravo reruns!
I have to admit to enjoying Trading Spaces when it is on (used to be a huge fan but not so much anymore). Clean Sweep is cool, too. Rich girls was pretty funny. Any reality show on cable pretty much works for me. Love the Sopranos but I don't have HBO. I buy the seasons on DVD and I borrow tapes of them from my parents during the seasons. |
Can't miss these:
30 Minute Meals (Racheal Ray = Hot) Most Extreme Elimination Challenge Good Eats Curb Your Enthusiasm Kim Possible (Disney) |
MONK on USA, funniest show put on in a very long time
and I try to watch(I tape but sometimes miss) the Nick@Nite shows: CHEERS WINGS ROSEANNE And I watch Simpsons Drew Carey and the SCIFI network |
My must watch shows are sports, mostly soccer, football, and baseball/hockey when in season. The fact that I watch so much sports, makes my non-sports programming "valuable" in the sense that I rarely watch non-sports programming.
Seinfeld is one of the funniest shows I have ever seen, and I will watch re-runs whenever I catch them on. I occasionally have news kicks, where I will watch the 24 hour news networks, but generally this only occurs after a national disaster or high speed chase on FOX news. I also have watched Imus when I woke up earlier for morning classes. Most recently, I have been watching Charlie Rose. I've been reading The Economist a lot lately, to the point where it is such a good magazine that I look forward to spending time with it, and enjoy reading it immensely. It's hard to describe really, but it's a really rewarding experience. Anyway, Charlie Rose features no frills interviews with people in the news and media. I love the fact that the show is on PBS, and thus able to focus on content and not advertising and commercial spots. The Economist + Charlie Rose is a superb combination for a reason that is hard to describe. I really enjoy both immensely, and find them enlightening and life bettering. I have only been reading The Economist seriously/consistently for a month, and have just started watching Charlie Rose this week, but I can feel myself becoming more cultured and informed as a result. It's a really neat feeling, and adds to the excitement that comes from experiencing the said media. Also, on a side note, Bryce Dallas Howard was on Charlie Rose tonight, and she is quite beautiful. I had never seen or heard of her before, but wow, she's gorgeous! I'd also like to start watching Monk, as I remember the protagonist from Wings, back when re-runs were being aired a few years ago. I believe his characters name on Wings was Antonio, and he was easily one of the funniest characters on the show. UPDATE: I just noticed Google is hosting Charlie Rose's shows for online viewing. From what I gather, the previous day's episode is available for free, and the other episodes cost $.99 to download/watch. The link can be found HERE. |
Definately the Simpsons. Been watching them since I was small. But haven't got a chance to really watch to much tv lately.
|
Blow Out......
|
Good Eats.
And that's about it. |
The Shield and Battlestar Galactica are my favorite TV shows.
|
These are the only two I can think of off the top of my head:
Daily Show Colbert Report |
Sopranos
Lost Entourage Prison Break Battlestar Galactica Stargate Stargate Atlantis Big Love Rome Dr. Who |
Netflix to the Rescue?
Quote:
were on cable but like you did not want to pay so much for cable. I pay $20. a month ,get 3 dvds per week.(If you send back too quick, Netflix will start to send you only 2 per week.....but still charge you $20. a month.) I think you can order just one DVD a week for $9.95. Not as many programs as cable TV but it is cheaper and YOU get to see what you want. (When I had cable TV a few years ago; the movies were mostly ones I had seen years before.) My favorite stuff on cable were: "WINGS", "A&E", "MAIL CALL", History programs and SCI-FI shows. IF I had cable now my favories would probably be "The HISTORY Channel", "SCi-FI Channel" and HBO. |
