What TV shows do you watch?

I'm sure this thread has existed before, but there doesn't seem to be a recent one.

I have become totally addicted to watching tv shows on Netflix, either streaming (when available) or disc by mail. I watch far more tv shows than movies these days. I realize when watching them that most television dramas are really just glorified soap operas - with better themes, less shlock and the triumvirate of adult programming: sex, drugs and (luckily) many profligate and creative uses for profanity.

What I watch now:

Mad Men
Weeds
Big Love
The Wire
Californication
The X-Files (less devotedly, but have made it to the middle of season 3)

What I was watching and stopped but would like to go back to one day:
Star Trek: The Next Generation
30 Rock

What I have watched from beginning to end:
The Sopranos
Six Feet Under
Sex and the City
Lost (the only show I've been significantly disappointed by)

Reality Shows:
Hoarders
Top Chef
Project Runway
American Pickers

Shows I would like to watch someday:
Arrested Development
Breaking Bad
Oz
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Boardwalk Empire
United States of Tara
The Big C
Hung

I think I have forgotten a few here and there, but I can update later if I remember something.

What shows have you enjoyed/want to watch?

Baraka_Guru 04-08-2011 05:17 AM

I occasionally watch Big Bang Theory. Before that, I used to watch the newer Battlestar Galactica, though I haven't yet seen the final season.

I'm now looking forward to watching Game of Thrones, premiering on HBO on April 17th!

jewels 04-08-2011 05:24 AM

Oh boy! Employee benefit include free cable which has turned me into a total addict. DVR, on-demand, premium channels ... but I'm still more of a film addict than a series person. Here's my list of TV shows I watch regularly. First, the ones I won't miss:

Dexter
Weeds
Boardwalk Empire
True Blood
Shameless
United States of Tara
Breaking Bad
The Big C
Episodes
Parks & Rec

Current mini-series that have me hooked:

Mildred Pierce
The Killing

Used to watch but got bored with after the first season or two:

Big Love
Mad Men
The Walking Dead
Rubicon

Try to catch but not quite as committed:

The Event
V
Men Of A Certain Age
Portlandia
Hung
Californication
House

Reality shows:

Jerseylicious
So You Think You Can Dance

I think that about covers it for me. Past shows I've seen from start to finish? Way too many to name.

noodle 04-08-2011 05:35 AM

House
Big Bang Theory
30 Rock
Raising Hope

Breaking Bad
The Walking Dead
True Blood
Dexter
Nurse Jackie
United States of Tara
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia

Project Runway
The Model Agency
Man v Food (sometimes)
Three Sheets (sometimes)
Bourdain's No Reservations (when we had cable)

I used to watch Weeds, but it became really annoying in season 6, so I stopped. Lost lost me, too. And I hated the last episode. There are some I catch on Hulu when I have nothing else to do, just for background noise... Haven, Covert Affairs, Glee, Royal Pains, Outsourced, Kitchen Nightmares... but nothing there that I HAVE to watch.

mixedmedia 04-08-2011 06:04 AM

thanks for the lists! you see, part of my reason for starting this thread was because I am trolling for new shows to watch, heh heh heh. I have added some of your suggestions to my list :)

---------- Post added at 09:51 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:48 AM ----------

There are also shows that I have seen many episodes of (but not all) that I might like to watch from beginning to end sometime:

Seinfeld
Absolutely Fabulous
Kids in the Hall (I've seen all of these I think, but I am collecting the episodes to own - I have up through Season 5)

---------- Post added at 10:04 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:51 AM ----------

oh, and then there's this show I just discovered on Netflix a few days ago that looks good:

Red Riding - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

noodle 04-08-2011 06:23 AM

S went through a The Whitest Kids You Know phase.

I forgot Entourage. S watched seasons 2 - 5 in two days.
I didn't watch it as fast, but I started it first. I heart Ari.
And Warehouse 13. And Human Target. But Portlandia is not funny.
I used to watch Fringe, but got lost and disinterested when they started the dual universe episodes. I don't like the bangs and the plot line got weary.

Oh and Dead Like Me is a great series to pick up and watch. It was only one season. And the one with the guy from Ed and Kristen Chenowith... that was fun to pick up.

Vaultboy 04-08-2011 07:32 AM

Fringe
House
Cougar Town
Modern Family

snowy 04-08-2011 07:40 AM

We stream most of the TV we watch over Hulu and we have an antenna, but I'm just not a big TV watcher anymore. Usually, these shows get watched in huge blocks as marathons, except for Warehouse 13 and Eureka; those we usually watch right away. I was watching Human Target, but one poorly written episode really irritated me, and I've yet to catch up.

30 Rock
Warehouse 13
Eureka
Portlandia (I think it's funny, but that might be because of where I live)

And on actual TV we watch:
Nova Science Now
Nova
Nature
Antiques Roadshow
the Simpsons

Last week I got sucked into watching Wallander: One Step Behind on Masterpiece: Mystery!, but I didn't get to finish it, so I've put the DVD on hold at the public library, because DAMMIT, I want to know what happened. They have all the other DVDs, so I expect to get those too at some point. Kenneth Branagh is fun to watch.

Zeraph 04-08-2011 11:48 AM

I officially don't watch TV anymore. Haha, well live TV anyways. Now that I have netflix, bye bye cable. That's all I watch now. So far I'm not missing it.

mixedmedia 04-08-2011 12:32 PM

I don't have cable, either. My tv series watching habit has been developed exclusively through netflix.

---------- Post added at 04:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:30 PM ----------

I've just watched the first episode of Season 6 of Weeds. And I have to agree that this show seems to have lost its way along with Big Love.

I felt the same way at points with both Six Feet Under and The Sopranos.

noodle 04-08-2011 12:50 PM

It just lost its spunk, mm.
When a dryer becomes an integral part of your show (unless it's possessed and a serial killer), it's time to let it go...

fill23ca 04-08-2011 04:25 PM

There are so many networks and so much to choose from now-a-days it's hard to see everything I'd like to watch. But I do watch the following.

The Walking Dead
Big Bang Theory
Modern Family (my fav)
Mr. Sunshine
Bob's Burgers
SNL
Cops
Parks and Recreation
The Office

I'll watch these in reruns

M.A.S.H.
Seinfeld
The Simpsons (only first 6-7 seasons)

Jove 04-09-2011 05:44 AM

Late night with Jimmy Fallon
House
Glee
Bones
Parks and Rec
Archer
Community
The Soup
The Big Bang Theory
30 Rock
The Office

Through Netflix
Spartacus
Sons of Anarchy
Californication
Eureka
Dr. Who
Buffy the vampire slayer (spent 4 months watching 7 seasons)
Skins
Weeds
The League

Fremen 04-09-2011 06:58 PM

I still watch all the crime drama shows...
CSI and its spinoffs
Criminal Minds and spinoff
NCIS and spinoff
etc.,

We've been getting into the auction/antique shows...
American Pickers
Pawn Stars
Hardcore Pawn
Storage Wars
Auction Hunters
Auction Kings
Big Brian: The Fortune Hunter

A lot of the cooking shows, too...

Diners, Drive-in and Dives
Good Eats
Iron Chefs America and the original Japan one
Restaurant Wars
Man vs Food
The Challenge series on Food Network
and Chopped

Plus other too numerous shows to list, that I record on dvr.

filtherton 04-09-2011 08:44 PM

Fuck.

Dinosaur Train
Wild Kratts
...

Fuck.

WhoaitsZ 04-10-2011 05:24 PM

welllllllllllllllll this is tough. most shows I watched were with the wife due to a very hectic schedule.

over six years from start to finish:

Battlestar Galitca - I -loved- this show
The Shield - tied with BSG. I absolutely love Vic...
The Sopranos - was a great show but the ending was the single worse ending I ever saw
Six Feet Under - even though the last two seasons screamed /wrist
The Wire - by far the best cop drama ever. i don''t compare this with The Shield.
Buffy - after 8 or so episodes of season one I really liked it. very fun show.
Angel - very good. bit more emo/serious than buffy but fun
Queer As Folk - an absolutely fabulous (ha ha I made a funny) show.. very, very well done drama about being gay
The L Word - not nearly as good as QAF but four words : Extremely Hawt Lipstick Lesbians -- my wife got annoyed cuz omfg Marinna... so yummy
Babylon 5 - it took my wife years to get me through season one because the caracters looked so goddamned retarded.. I got hooked in affer 3/4 of S1.
South Park - although the last few seasons left a lot to be desired there were a few great episodes still
The Tudors - great show despite the sommetimes grueling pace
Rome - needed more than two seasons!
Carnvale - same as Rome

and much more. too busy to continue

Reese 04-10-2011 11:40 PM

Here's my DVR's entire list of programs set to record.
MY DVR   click to show

Most of these are still running series.. I'll spare you the list of about 100 cancelled shows that I'm still working my way though on netflix and dvd.

bagatelle 04-11-2011 01:33 AM

From those MM mentioned I've seen LOST and Six Feet Under from start to beginning. I don't currently have a show to follow. Oh, I did watch ALIAS, too.

mixedmedia 04-11-2011 03:57 AM

On a whim I started re-watching Twin Peaks yesterday. I forgot how great it was.

filtherton, I remember those days. but for me it was Pokemon, Captain Planet and the Ninja Turtles. and when boohead was little, she was into those frightening Teletubbies.

After you've finished Twin Peaks and remember what a betrayal the second season was, please look into AMC's The Killing.

It's a 13 episode mini-series centered around a single murder, not unlike Laura Palmer's. This week was the 3rd episode. It's based on an original Danish series and is great, adult TV; much closer to Twin Peaks than CSI. The Killing - About – AMC

mixedmedia 04-11-2011 09:51 AM

Ha, my sister said the same thing about The Killing when I told her I was watching Twin Peaks again. I will definitely check it out.

levite 04-11-2011 11:34 AM

Watching now (mostly guilty pleasures, nothing of serious quality except for the first two):

Doctor Who
How I Met Your Mother

Sanctuary
Warehouse 13
No Ordinary Family
Hawaii Five-0
Detroit 1-8-7
The Chicago Code
Family Guy
Robot Chicken
The Simpsons (it finally got funny again)

Watching on Netflix:

Law and Order (various spinoffs)
That '70s Show
Sherlock Holmes (the original BBC series w/Jeremy Brett)

Classics I have watched through and often go back to:

Buffy
Angel
Firefly
Battlestar Galactica
DS9
Doctor Who
CSI (through like season 6 or so)
X-Files (through season 5 or 6)
West Wing (through season 4)
Sports Night
Seinfeld
ER (through around season 7 or 8)
American Gothic (anyone? anyone?)
Friends
The Practice
Picket Fences
NYPD Blue
Nip/Tuck
NewsRadio
Robin Hood (the recent BBC series)

mixedmedia 04-12-2011 05:06 PM

and I thought I watched a lot of shows. :)

The second disc of Mad Men Season 4 arrived today and I'm about to cocoon myself comfortably in bed and start watching it. While Weeds has indeed turned out to be a bit of a disappointment (thank god for Andy, that's all I've got to say), I'm still hanging in there with this one. I like the quiet nature and pacing of this show. The actors fill their roles pretty seamlessly. It's like the dark side of Funny Face on morphine.

stellabella1978 04-12-2011 05:18 PM

I don't have a whole lot of time for TV, but I will watch any of the Stargate shows whenever I find them.

Meditrina 04-13-2011 04:40 AM

When I get to watch TV, I try to catch up on the HBO shows I have fallen behind on.

True Blood is my favorite.
Boardwalk Empire was good.
I will watch Game of Thrones as well.
Mildred Pierce is a mini-series that I need to finish watching this weekend.

I love HBO on Demand. I don't really watch much else.

Reese 04-14-2011 11:25 AM

Ack! I forgot to put Southland in my list! How could I forget Southland!? BTW, Watch Southland plz.

telekinetic 04-14-2011 02:00 PM

Lately it has been:
My Little Ponies: Friendship is Magic
Magic Schoolbus
Yo Gabba Gabba

But I also like trash reality TV:
Survivor
Amazing Race
Top Chef
(not as much this season for some reason)

And I love HBO series:
The Wire (finished it, sadly)
True Blood
Boardwalk Empires

Trying to get into Treme but it's just so slow...

For non-HBO drama, it's just Breaking Bad. Weeds started sucking WAY before season six (DEA agent? Uhhh, sure), I lost interest in Dexter after season 1 (though I'm told it gets better), Lie to Me had tons of potential but just got SUPER repetitive (NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO BE PERSONALLY INVOLVING A TEAM MEMBER GAH *NERD RAGE* STOP FORCE-FEEDING HALFASSED CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT).

But yeah, mostly My Little Ponies. It's seriously a great show, I'm not being sarcastic.

Grasshopper Green 05-02-2011 08:18 AM

Lost is the only show I've ever been completely faithful to and watched every week without fail.

Hubby and I watch House, but we tend to watch 2-3 episodes at a time and then skip it for a month. We watch House online.

I'll occasionally watch Criminal Minds or American Pickers (if I haven't already seen the episode) if I'm actually watching TV. I also like History Channel stuff (none of this Swamp People/Ice Truckers/Ax Men bullshit) when it's actually about history. My son and I will watch PBS Nature shows together on Sunday nights, if we aren't doing something else.

dain524 05-02-2011 09:18 AM

GAAAHHHH!!!

That is a hard list to make. I watch a LOT of TV. Not that I dont do anything else, but I routinely get by on 4-5 hours of sleep. I'm an insomiac with a HD DVR, not a good combination.

Right now, I'm watching, with a 5 star scale:

Celebrity Apprentice - *** (just to watch Gary Busey was hilarious)
Game of Thrones - **** (now I have to go back and read the books again)
Big Bang Theory - *****
How I Met Your Mother - ****
The Event - ***
NCIS - ****
NCIS: Los Angeles - ***
Stargate:Universe -** (just have to watch it since I have watched everything else in the stargate franchise)
Sanctuary - *** 1/2
Justified - ****
Modern Family - **
Grey's Anatomy - ***
Private Practice - **
30 Rock - ** 1/2
Outsourced - ***
Archer - ***
Psych - **
Burn Notice - ***
Eureka - ***
Mad Love - **
Criminal Minds - ***
Marcel's Quantum Kitchen - **
The Clone Wars - **** (They do some amazing stuff with tying in storylines to Star Wars canon)
#!$@ My Dad Says - **
The Simpsons - ***
Family Guy - **
Futurama - ***
Camelot - **
Merlin - **
The Big C - ***
Doctor Who - ****
Torchwood - *** 1/2
Sherlock - ****
Big Brother - ** (Strictly for the screaming and yelling, I get some much needed stress relief watching those idiots)
American Pickers - ***
V - **
Shameless - **
Warehouse 13 - *** (I'll turn my wife into a sci-fi junkie yet, she loves this show)
Mr. Sunshine - **
Sons of Guns - ***
CMT's Next SuperStar - *** (My wife got me hooked)

and this is only the current stuff on the DVR, not the series I want to watch or the stuff I have seen in its entirety like OZ, Battlestar Galactica or Lost.

I also have the DirecTV premium access package with all of the movie channels included, along with HBOGO and CinemaxGO online on demand access.

I'll have to edit the list if I can think of any others not in season right now.

Edit: I knew I would forget a few
Being Human - *** - BBC reboot for America
Covert Affairs - **
Haven - ***

pan6467 06-11-2011 02:06 AM

NCIS is a great show, who cannot love Paulley Perrette as Abby? One of the best ensemble cast chemistries I have seen in a very long while.

Monk

House

King of the Hill

Night Stalker

Night gallery (with Rod serling)

Buck Rogers (w/ Gil Gerard and Erin Grey)

Chiller marathons of the 80' - early nineties B horror tv shows like Monsters, Freddie's Nightmares, outer Limits, Friday the 13th, Monsters, Tales from the darkside, Tales from the crypt. Cheesy spec. effects and story lines but still watchable for me.

Enterprise on the syfy channel.

There's a lot more but I need sleep.

snowy 06-11-2011 07:45 AM

We have cable again, so we've been able to watch a lot of shows where the latest season isn't streamable, as is the case with Discovery's Mythbusters and Deadliest Catch. Cartoon Network's streaming also left something to be desired, so we got all caught up on our Metalocalypse.

Mssmartypants 06-11-2011 11:08 PM

All the shows I watched were cancelled like Heroes and Flash Forward.
Not true. There's also True Blood and Modern Family. They are still going strong.
But generally I enjoy watching films and reading books more than watching television.
