The Godfather (Part 1)

I just saw this for the first time on Saturday and I was throughly impressed. The acting was absolutely fantastic. I never really understood why Marlon Brando was held in such high regard as an actor until I saw his performance as Don Corleone. Anyone else really like this movie? What are you thoughts? I am planning on renting part 2 soon. Of the three, which is your favorite?

1 and 2 are so awesome. but i must warn you, the 3rd one is written/made by a different guy and they changed micheal corleone into a wimpy old guy who is tired of being powerful.

i liked the first one alot, but i have to say i like the 2nd one better. it reveals alot of history and he becomes so powerful

I like Brando in I and Deniro in II, both are excellent. III was a 6 out of 10

3 was complete ass because they made the director's daughter a main character and she can't act for shit.

So it sounds like 3 kind of sucks. Is it worth watching or does it have a negative effect over all on your feeling about the trilogy as a whole?

the first Godfather is by far one of _the_ best movies ever. wonderful acting, wonderful everything. I loved it.

everyone says part 2 is better. i love part 2 a lot, too, but the first one is soooooooo great. part 3 is the worse, but you need to watch it. it's not terrible.

I'm not sure which one is better. Parts 1 and 2 are both amazing. IMDB has Part 1 as the best movie ever and Part 2 has the 3rd best.

If you have the time, read The Godfather. Best book I've ever read. There's tons of background information about all the characters thats not in the movies.

kgb,

Congratulations on discovering one of the great movies of all-time and a rare situation where the sequel didn't drop off from the orginal.

Please, I beg of you, don't judge the product by Godfather 3. You can watch it if you're curious, but please don't let it affect your opinion of the first two movies.

Sonny's intensity--leading to his downfall.
Michael's quiet leadership
Fredo being Fredo

Brilliant.

There's a rumor that they're tossing around a script for Godfather 4.

It kind of does have a negative effect, mainly because story in 3 doesn't have much to do with 1 or 2. I can't wait to see how bad the 4th installment will be.

Godfather 3 seemed line a completely different movie, rather than an extension of the first two. Al Pacino was in full "Scent of a Woman" mode in line delivery. When in doubt...yell.

No Robert Duvall was a mistake.

Poor Sofia Coppolla was in so far over her head.

Andy Garcia was one of the few saving graces of the entire film.

I had never seen the Godfather either untill recently. I have always wanted to. So I decided to by the trilogy dvd boxset! Excellent. Havn't even watched part 3 yet. I dont know if im putting it off because i dont want it to be a dissapointment. I loved part 1 & 2. Part one because of Marlon Brando, and part two because it shows the beginning of being the Godfather, and it has de Niro in it. Excellent movies... I'll have to watch part 3, and that bonus dvd that comes with it too soon...

As JoeyB rightly acknowledged, Part III is is a different kind of film. On its own it would be a competent, well made movie, with many positive aspects (Andy Garcia, regretful Pacino). The problem lies in its being the sequel to two of the greatest movies ever made (although Sofia Coppola and an all too hasty ending don't help).

Am glad you have discovered these gems though. The original book by Mario Puzo is well worth reading too. Has all the first film details in as well as the background/De Niro bits from Part II.

I saw all three films for the first time when my dad bought the DVD set. Started with part 1 and couldnt stop so went to part 2....couldnt stop.....part 3 and there went a whole saturday.

Totally awesome.

I liked part 2 the best and even though part 3 was very different (and miss Capolla can't act for shit), I thought it ended the series nicely. (moral story and all) Pacino in pt.2 is God.

1 and 2 are just one big movie to me.

3? What a waste.

I swear, Brando made a whole generation of fairly bad guys look civilized. None of the real gangs and such today come close to such utter cool.

These are my favorite movies of all times. When I watch GF I, I think it the best. Then I watch GF II, then I think that is the best. Its always been a toss up for me.

I agree that GF III was a different movie altogether. It lost the magic and intensity of the first two.

On tv recently they played a version of GF I and II in chronilogical order. (I don't remember what it was called) In other words, they played the older scenes in time from GF II first then the GF I then back to GF II for the ending. It was strange seeing it this way. It kept throwing me off because I know the movies so well. I guess its OK for people who never saw the originals to begin with.

Part 3 was crap. Even as a stand alone film it's crap.
And what the hell is up with the whole incest thing? That really pissed me off. Damn nepotism, Sofia Copolla looks like a damn horse and acts like one too.

Part 1 and 2 I try not to distinguish as two different films, rather just two different parts to the one film. Afterall there is proper continuity. If I had to pick one over the other I'd pick part 2 because De Niro is fantastic in it. Both classic.
Part 3 should be burned.

I've always seemed to have a much different taste in movies than other people. I hated the Godfather Part I and II. I haven't watched the third, probably won't ever.

They were long, boring, and I thought they would never end. The acting was good, I'll give it that, but the directing in the first movie was pathetic. The second the director had obviously learned a lot, but it still didn't help the movie. I believe if they had been done correctly they could have been much better, but as they are I wasted 6 or 7 hours of my life watching the pieces of crap. Part of the reason I didn't care for them so much was because of the predictibility, and that's probably just because the movies have been parodied so much that it was easy to guess what was coming next, but that was only a small problem I had with them. Seriously, I thought the movies were going to end 20 times and they never did, and all I could remember thinking is "when is this PoS gonna get over?"

Like I said, though, I have a different taste in movies than others. Other movies that people view as the great movies I loathe, such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Traffic, and Blade Runner.

*knows he's gonna get flamed, always does when he mentions his tastes in movies*

The problem with completely dissing 3 is that you miss the interesting contrast between the end of Michael in 3 and the end of Vito in 1.

I really loved the book. I really liked the first movie. I liked 2 about as well as I did 3. Call me a phillistine, but 2 just seemed ponderous to me (I need to give it another chance, I guess.)

Good Will Hunting is probably my favorite movie...

Eh, I'm having trouble thinking of many. If you name a movie it's easy for me to say if I like it or not, but it's hard for me to get a complete list of the movies that I do like.
