Most Under-rated Movie
Which movie do you think is the most under-rated movie. I think the movies done by Kevin Smith w/ Jay and Silent Bob. If you actually pay attention to the movies, they all have good morals hidden in them.
Your thoughts please. |
Flash Gordon. I think that this is the BEST movie ever. It's got everything a great movie needs and more! Plus, Ornella Muti is hot as fuck.
|
Trick or Treat. If anyone has seen this you are my new best friend.
|
I think Jackie Brown never really got the respect it deserved.
|
Hudson Hawk baby!!! :)
|
The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai and The Black Hole. Both movies were great and ended with a setup for sequels that never happened.
|
Laurel Canyon, great movie...not much publicity.
|
Final Destination 2. It did 50million at Box office and should have done 150 million.. At least I think it should have...
|
A personal favorite that everyone loves and no one remembers: Remo Williams. Would've made a great TV series.
|
Psivage. Yes m8 i remember trick or treat around 1986 watched it on vhs. Cant remember much about it though.
|
Dreamscape; I thought the concept was awsome.
Creepshow. . .I wish they would make more of them. |
I think The Prodigal Son gets my vote. It's basically about the son of a rich man who has been scammed by his Kung Fu masters and ends up thinking he know Kung Fu. In other words, his father pays them for teaching his son jack shit (he's overprotective, and don't want his son hurt or roughed up)
To make it worse, everyone in the town is being paid by the guy's dad to get deliberately lose when they battle him, thus making him believe that he is the Kung Fu king. So there he is, thinking that he's really good, when everyone in town knows he's shit. Then he challenges some guy who whoops his ass (he refused to be paid to lose) and what entails is this guy's quest to learn Kung Fu properly.... Ok, so it's a shoddy summary of the movie, but hey... Oh, and Fist Of Legend also gets my vote....I don't even think it made it to the UK cinema screen. |
Buckaroo Banzai, definitely. John Lithgow is Hi-larious.
Krull. Oh wait, that one wasn't good! Neuromancer. Great book, movie has been stalled for years by general stupidity. I for one would love to see it! The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Actually one of my favorites of all time (like all Terry Gilliam's movies), but a complete box-office bomb. And people hate it. I can't comprehend why! |
Almost forgot the current one:
THE HULK! Panned, and for some reason disliked by almost everyone I've talked to, it's actually an amazingly well-done movie. Some of Ang Lee's directorial effects are unexpected, and perhaps less than completely successful, but what makes it great is that you're watching a comic book! Except even more developed. Kind of like Neil Gaiman's Sandman series...come to think of it, what a truly awesome movie you could make out of those! Or actually, series, because Gaiman's storytelling is good enough that there's just too much content for one movie. |
OMG Psivage, I don't know anyone else who's even HEARD of that movie!!! I love Trick or Treat, and actually just got a copy of it on DVD at Walmart after losing my video copy. :) Ozzy and Gean Simmons in a horror flick rock!
|
I have to add No Retreat No Surrender. Jean Claude VanDamm as the bad guy and a kid who is trained by the spirit of Bruce Lee!
|
Brisco County Jr....
...Bruce Campbell rulzors |
Suicide Kings
|
I agree Jackie Brown was underrated. Also the 25th Hour was panned by most critics, but was an amazing monologue.
|
Eh, The boondock saints, its such an amazing movie, but like noone it seems, knows about it, Other than us cool internet/forum junkies). :)
Also, lock stock and two smoking barrels. |
Jay & Silent Bob is one of my all time favorites. It's funnier than Old School, IMHO.
Others - The Jerk, October Sky, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, The Endless Summer.... |
Although its got a pretty huge following on the TFP, in the mainstream, I would definitely say Equilibrium. As many of us know, that movies amazing.
|
Hard Boiled featuring Chow Yung Fat (however u spell it).One of the best movies that I have ever seen. I would suggest seeing this movie if you already havent.
|
Jackie Brown, yes.
There are some teen movies that are actually funny, like Bring it On. There is a great movie called "But I'm a Cheerleader" that everyone should see. The comedy is so dark it's almost black. |
Oh, and if you want to piss your pants laughing, go get "Shakes the Clown".
Stars Bobcat Goldthwait, Julie Brown (the white one), Adam Sandler, and some others. Alcoholic clowns beating the shit out of mimes. Classic. |
Heyyy... you clowns are on dope!:D
Hard Boiled is definitely Chow Yun Fatt's best (that awesome shootout in the hospital), but The Killer and A Better Tomorrow are also pretty awesome. If you see them subtitled, that is... Killer's passable, but the dubbing on A Better Tomorrow is atrocious. |
What about Killer Klowns from Outer Space! An all time classic.
Remo Williams is great "You move like a pregnant yak." |

Hudson Hawk... definately one of my favourite movies. Watched it obsessively a few years back. Brisco County Jr. while excellent isn't a movie... it was a TV series. |
Mystery Men gets no love? I personally LOVE this movie. It's so great, because not alot of people recognize the heroes. And Janine Garafflo(SP?) is teh r0x0rs.
|
UHF with Weird Al and Michael Richards (back before he was uber-famous) Is hilarious. For some reasons the critics really hated it though (apparently one of them even said that anyone who enjoyed the movie was simpleminded)

I agree with boober about Hudson Hawk.
What about Equilibrium, in my opinion, it was much better than Matrix Reloaded and only made $1 million at the box office. |
Big Trouble in Little China is one of my all-time favorites. Only made $12M in 1986.
|
Ishtar???

Hmmm, may have to watch this again tonight, since I own the DVD. |
Boondock Saints.
An amazing example of cinematography. |
Short list off the top of my head:
Boondock Satints - reasons already mentioned Magnolia - amazing ensemble cast, great soundtrack, awesome story 25th Hour - one of Ed Norton's best performances and just a great movie in general that deserves more recognition |
Drive, with Mark Dacascos and Kadeem Hardison.
It kicks the crap out of Rush Hour and Lethal Weapon and any other buddy film! The fight scenes rock!! |
25th hour was almost flawless. the killer with chow yung fat..
|
SLC Punk. I really liked that movie for some reason. It was just well done I think.
"Only posers die" |
The Transporter starring Jason Statham and SHU QI (Lai)
|
amadeus. It won about 5 oscars but it's still underrated.
|
Boondock Saints was underrated, but I have heard more people talk about it than I have about Equilibrium, which I thought was better.
|
Drop Dead Gorgeous - I love Kirsten Dunst most anywhere, but this one is hilarious. Ellen Barkin, Kirstie Alley and Allison Janney were too funny.
Hudson Hawk - I loved this movie and can't understand why people didn't. Freeway - Reese Witherspoon was excellent in this one. |
Not the most underrated by any means, but Resident Evil always gets dissed despite being the best video game -> movie conversion ever.
|
Donnie Darko is a truly fantastic movie
|
Hudson Hawk yep
Big Trouble in Little China big yep Payback gotta love a movie without a good guy So I Married An Axe Murderer " Head, Pants, Now!" Lock.Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels Ronin wth was in the case? Adventures in Babysitting |
matrix reloaded...
no really, its genious. |
Sexy Beast
Cube I wouldnt say Donnie Darko is underrated. |

Boondock Saints!
-Lasereth |
Oh, and Donnie Darko. Just saw that comment and it reminded me. Very good movie!
-Lasereth |
Equilibrium: underrated
I stayed away because of the generally unfavorable reviews, then rented it one night recently when I was hankering for some fresh sci-fi. It rocks! Maybe not too deep, but it has some amazing action and some great dramatic scenes. If you like sci-fi and action, give it a go. Definitely worth the cost of a rental, at the least.
|
battle field earth
|
Starship Troopers, best movie ever. If you pay close attention, you might realize the movie is really a metaphor for the transition of our society into fascism. Everything that happened in that movie is relevant today.
|
I have to agree with Starship Troopers--GREAT movie...alsoRemo Williams: The Adventure Begins is another classic that nobody knows.
|
Dunno where everyone stands on this, but i absolutely loved "Punch Drunk Love". PT Anderson being one of my favorite directors, i saw it immediately upon release dispite horrid user reviews, and mixed critical review..
COMPLETELY new take on romance genre as we know it. Adam Sandler was stunning playing in one of his more serious roles, and it was nice to see he could include at least some of his schtick in the film, but with some meaning behind the actions. Might be for the younger generations, anyone I know whos 30 or above thats seen it, hated it. Another that was completely panned, was Basic. It seemed the critics, check rottentomatoes and youll see, just couldnt understand it. Upon seeing it the first time i was in the same boat, but with a funny sense of satisfaction after being completely confused :) second time around, if you really try at it, all the puzzle pieces fit together, even if the movie wasnt quite as flowing as it could have been. |
I always get abuse hurled at me when I admit the DUNE is one of my favorite movies.
Great story, great acting, great atmosphere. I don't know what the problem people have with it! Irish |
Dune was great, I'm glad you admitted it.
|
Home Fries...............just bullshittin. Usual Suspects is dope.
|
Van Wilder
Hudson Hawk Tigerland |
I think The killer is the best chow yun fat/ john woo film. Try to find the Criterion version to watch. The subs are much better. Hard boiled is great also.
Basically anything with chow yun fat / john woo is freakin' amazing. |
MST3K the movie, My kids and I laughed till it hurt!!
|
there's a MST3000 MOVIE???
oh and Tank Girl is one of the greatest flicks ever. |
snatch was an awesome movie.......... then second would be lock stock and 2 smokin barrels
|
Trainspotting...... that is just the coolest movie...
|
life as a house and made are 2 movies that are really really great movies that you dont hear alot about.
|
Shallow Grave
Mallrats- was panned by everyone but its my fave |
Another vote for Hudsen Hawk, I loved that movie.

I haven't seen Equilibrium, but have heard lots of good things. I have a birthday coming up, and I'm thinking about asking for it. What movies might you compare it to? Is it one I should rent first, or can it be enjoyed by most people?
|
John Q, Denzel Washington
|
Finally, I was wondering if anyone was going to say John Q.
Great movie that for some reason just didn't take off. Provides a realistic story with great acting, what more can you ask for? |
I'll go with Hudson Hawk, as well. SLC Punk was great. Now I want to see it again! Also, The Pentagon Wars. Hardly anyone one has seen this and I think the John Q. Public needs to know how thier tax money is spent, lol!
|
The Bradley is the very rare exception, not the rule.
Abrams, F-14, F-16, F-18, F-117A, B-2, Humvee All the best in the world. |
Quote:
Been looking forever for it also. |
The Believer. Nothing beats a Jewish Neo-Nazi.
|
I think "The life of David Gale" is underrated by today's standards. The movie got little press, but it was a very solid movie in my opinion. Also, as far as being in the category of the "best movies of all time" The Shawshank Redemption doesn't get mentioned too much. That movie is outstanding.

I'll second Jackie Brown. I also think Gattaca doesn't get enough credit as being one of the better Sci-Fi movies in recent years. For me, Equilibrium is strictly an action movie with a futuristic, "Big Brother" type setting thrown in for good measure. For it's budget though, it was very well done.

I agree with the comments about Kevin Smith's movies. Sam Rami has also done some quite good films (Darkman, Evil Dead Trilogy, Crimewave) I even liked "For love of the Game" but my all time underrated movie has to be "Office Space", it's so much more than a comedy, this movie really changed my life. I worked in an office for 10 years, watched the movie, and now I'm at work at Home Depot, I will never work in an office again. True story.
|
Oh, where do I begin????
Let's see..... "Better Off Dead" (CLASSIC CUSACK!!!) "Dogma" - it's GREAT! Nothing is too sacred to be poked at. Thank you Kevin!!!! "PCU"...You just can't knock Jeremy Piven in this movie! "I'm Gonna Get You Sucka'" (Keenan Ivory Wayans' stab at the Blacksploitation movies of the 70's.) "Strange Brew" (I could comment on this, but I'd need a whole new thread to get it right). "Goonies" (Call it a quirk....I love that movie even now). "The Ref" (Denis Leary rocks!) I'm sure I could come up with more, but why bother? |
Valley of the Dolls.
Oh, wait. I thought I was on the Worst Movie thread. Sorry. |
I'm glad I'm not the only one here that thought Hudson Hawk was funny.
Also I think that movies by the Cohen brothers in general get overlooked, Fargo, Barton Fink, Millers Crossing. The last 2 were just released on DVD like a month ago..geez. |
I just really enjoyed this movie:
Inside Moves (1980) http://entertainment.msn.com/movies/movie.aspx?m=31803 maybe it had something to do with me loving basketball. |
Yuen Wu Pings' Tai Chi Boxer is amazing!
The Matrix coreographers film kicks arse, quality final fight! A must see for any martial arts fan |
Joe vs the Volcano with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. One of those movies that you don't have to think a lot about, just sit back and laugh with.
|
Event Horizon - bad acting but a sci-fi fright flick that scared the crap out of me.
|
Heavy metal a ok movie wiyh a very good sound track.
|
MIRACLE MILE
The movie's not just underrated but forgotten. It's been on cable the past couple nights otherwise I probably wouldn't have thought of it. I'm not saying it's the best movie, but it has a uniqueness that deserves to be recognized. The director did the higher profile but less than mediocre Cherry 2000 which I'm betting is why noone remembers this one. |
Cube absolutely blew me away when I first saw it. Fantastic film! Too bad the sequel didn't come close to living up to it, but how many do.
Election is way under-rated too. One of the few movies that after it ended I was glad I got dragged to it! :) |
Boondock Saints, Dogma, Office Space, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
|
Quote:
Hong Kong Legends do the best R2 versions. I havent seen any Criterion versions but I would certainly recommned HKL. |
i don't understand why office space got such poor reviews. it wasn't an incredible movie or anything, but more funny than recent martin lawrence crap and rated just as poorly.
|
Dark City was a great movie. The storyline is truly original.
|
The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai,
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The Gift Welcome to the Dollhouse The Killer Embrace the Vampire (Alyssa Milanos best work) |
Event Horizon -- Yes! This is my favorite sci-fi movie that-makes-no-sense. Highly underrated.
Meet the Feebles -- brought to you by the maker of LOTR Gigli -- heh, I just kid. |
THE FUNNIEST movies would have to be freddy got fingered and Strange Brew...Bad Boys 2 was a kick ass movie, whoever the hell thinks that movie is thumbs down is crazy!
