Shutter Island

So. What did everyone think?

I loved it. Great head trip. Very creepy scenes. Also very involving--there wasn't the typical distance from the story line.

In short, IMHO, it was like playing FEAR (First Encounter Tactical Recon) again with all the creepy flashbacks and hallucinations.

Excellent, but predictable story. I think if I didn't watch a trailer, it wouldn't have given the answer.

Began to figure it out about half way through it, but it was a fun ride to get there anyways.

Just saw this the other day.
Liked it a lot.

I thought it looked/felt like a horror video game too.

I was a little disappointed. I was expecting a little more "horror" than what was actually there. It was a decent thriller though. I figured it out about part way through and thought it was kind of predictable, but I still enjoyed it.

Plan9 03-22-2010 03:41 PM

Predictable. It was a Memento ripoff with a bigger budget.

The book was a LOT better, and it wasn't even a particularly good book.

Vaultboy 03-23-2010 11:46 AM

The soundtrack in places where they were building suspense was a bit overwhelming to the point of being jarring and out of place. Definite overkill.

Other than that, it was a predictable storyline, well executed, with some iconic visuals in some scenes. On the whole though, Scorsese's last few uotings leave me jaded. Nothing new on offer.

Boggy 03-26-2010 01:15 AM

Hey Boss.

I thought it was awesome. Some very memorable scenes. I had it sort of figured out halfway through as well, BUT the very end and what he did, that I did not see coming. The look on the "guy sitting beside him on the stairs"'s (to avoid spoiler) face explains it all.

Better to die a hero, than live as a monster.

I dunno, I didn't really like the movie to be honest.

The opening, before they get to the gates, had me aghast - that BUUUH!-BUUUH!-BUUUH!-BUUUH! music and that insane helicopter shot. No problems with the ending either and the middle was mostly fun too. DiCaprio is totally magnetic no matter what he does and Ruffalo was an ideal number 2 man. Kingsley was clearly having a ball as was Ted Levine. Lip-smacking performances which is exactly what a film like this needs. And it's always a pleasure to see (and hear- that voice!) Max Von Sydow. It was maybe a little bit longer than it needed to be. 8/10

Lol, as I said, the score was a bit jarring at times.

I've yet to see a movie based on a book that was anywhere near as good as the book itself. For a start, unless the book was very very short, they have to leave so much out.

IMHO the best transfer from book to film was Lord of the Rings, and even then, they left out some significant sections. At times I wonder if the best idea is not to make films from short stories, like The Green Mile.

Sorry to change the subject.

Yes, Jazz makes a good point. Short books or stories are often better to adapt because there's less to cut.

I think people's opinions about this will be down to if you're a book person or a film one. I'm a film one (I figure since I see more films than I read books, though I like to read) and some films that were better than their books, I guess (not read them), are The Godfather, Jaws, The Shawshank Redemption, Gone with the Wind, About Schmidt, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Trainspotting, A Clockwork Orange, Cold Mountain, The Talented Mr Ripley, Gone Baby Gone and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I have read The Lord of the Rings though, and those films were better than the book, and the same goes for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and ...The Goblet of Fire - not because the books were bad, they weren't - but because those two films were so, so brilliant. The other HP films are on the same quality level as their corresponding books, pretty much, though the next one(s) probably won't be as good as the last book. The Bourne films are better than their books (based only on having read the first one). American Psycho and A Clockwork Orange are films that are exactly as good as their books.
