Men vs. Wild

Is anyone going to watch this, this Tuesday?

Bear Grylls, survival dude, is teaming up with Will Farrel, funny dude.

heres the clip off of youtube:

It does look pretty good. I've always wanted to see him or Survivorman bring other people out into the middle of nowhere that didn't know what they were doing.

djtestudo 05-31-2009 04:23 PM

This is a shameless ploy to get people to watch both the show and Ferrell's movie.

I will be seeing both :D

Looks hilarious.

I have probably not laughed at Will Ferrell since SNL.

You have probably not WATCHED Will Ferrell since SNL...;)

I hate most of SNL's stuff, even when Ferrell was in it. All of their sketches are the same, end the same ways, and are always centered around one joke; so I usually get the point by the time 1/3 of the sketch has passed.
I liked Ferrell in Stranger than Fiction, Anchorman, and Old School. His other movies have been meh. It seems he spends a lot of his acting career acting crazy and yelling loudly, just some of the characters are better written.

Bear Grylls is a tool. I hate him and his fake ass, dangerous show... which I guess is why an A-list Hollywood actor is on his show, as opposed to a show with an actual survival situation (like Survivorman).

they had it on at the bar last night, i watched a bit. looked interesting, but i had to question the validity of the situation. first off, not a fan of bear. he takes every opportunity to strip and show his body, and some of the shit he does don't make sense. second, would whoever owns will ferrell actually put him in any real danger? if he dies, they lose cash. big name actors are often not allowed to do shit for fear they get hurt and hollywood loses money, so really, how much of a survival situation could they be in?

if i could get past the lack of "realness" and just watch it for entertainment value, a comedian and a model fucking around in the snow, then yeah, it was a good show.

interesting thing - will ferrell played Marshall Willenholly in Jay and Silent Bob strike back. and of course, it was a nod to land of the lost, marshall, will, and holly.

i laughed at him in that.

I don't think Man vs Wild is trying to fool anyone that he's out there alone. There's a disclaimer at the top of the show and after commercial breaks and he can get away with doing risky things just to show you because he has a rescue crew nearby. It's an edutainment program on Discovery channel, not a sports program with a rulebook and a scorecard.

That said, I watched the Men vs Wild episode. Will Ferrell had a couple of funny little jokes and he was totally willing to participate in what was going on and I believe he was taking it somewhat serious because he was legitimately nervous, especially when repelling down the cliff with only 2 stick as their anchor. It didn't have a lot of shock value, there was no squeezing elephant dung to get water out of it or eating a rotting zebra raw but it wasn't a bad episode.

Yeah, I have always wanted to see Les kick the crap out of Bear. I would pay money to watch that.

PulpMind 06-08-2009 04:28 PM

They should trade hosting responsibilities for a show and see who can last longer.

biznatch 06-09-2009 12:04 PM

Les Stroud is smarter, calmer, exactly what you'd wanna be in a real survival situation. If you were trying to stay alive, you wouldn't risk hypohermia by climbing a waterfall, instead of looking for a safer way up.
Survivorman gives you useful advice, not how to jump off a bad ass looking cliff while yelling, after making a ridiculous flotation device by tying your pants in a knot.
I'm pretty Bear Gryll's nights "in the wild" are often spent comfortably in a hotel, and flown back by helicopter for the next day of filming.
"Oh here, look, some bear shit. How much did Discovery say they'd pay me if I ate bear shit?" What a moron.

Ha. I'm not a fan of either, but I think it's funny that people bust Bear's nuts because he has a crew. Anyone who climbs everest at 23, is a member of the British Special Forces and a second dan black belt in Shotokan is still badass.

but yeah.. he needs to learn to keep his clothes on.

Actually the International Badass Society recently published an updated charter, which made it clear that douches are barred from admittance into their club.
Douches are douches.
Bear is a dangerous one, because he presents his stupid little show as if it provides useful info on how to survive, when most of his suggestions will actually lower your chances of survival.

n0nsensical 06-12-2009 11:34 PM

Actually I was wrong, I've seen and laughed at him in Oblongs :P

They, of course, only started putting the disclaimer after the show got into a lot of hot water for deceiving it's viewers.
