'Coupling' is awesome and fully justified my netflix this month

I'm sure this is old news to most, but I finally got around to watching it, and I love it!

All four seasons of Coupling are available to stream straight to a pc to any one with a netflix account via their 'watch instantly' service, and the wife and I took advantage of that this past weekend and basically watched the whole run of the show continuously.

It was (and is) the most consistently funny show (a few very minor bobbles in season four due to casting changes excepted) that I've ever watched--my wife agrees, and our tastes don't always coincide, so this is saying something.

I read it accurately described as the sharp writing, comedic timing and clever back-and-forth dialog of Seinfeld added to the relational dynamics of Friends, with the subject matter and frank sexual attitudes that evoke Sex and the City.

I've laughed harder at a few of their setups and plotlines than I have at any other show ever, I think. Their ability to take a single gag or concept and drive a whole laugh packed episode with it is unrivaled, as is their ability to craft unpredictable plots that come together for glorious win in the final moments.

Any other fans?

Coupling (UK) was everything that Friends wasn't. It was surprisingly very funny, churned out a million and one quotable quotes, and the cast were all capable actors. And then there's Jeff. Oh, Jeffrey. Jeffery and his imaginary, miniature, emasculating guillotine. Jeffery and the giggle loop. Jeffery and the jar of eyes.

Yes, I'm a fan.

I'm going to heartily miss their 'multiple perspectives of the same scene played back to back from different people's perspectives, each funnier than the last and adding context to the previous ones that make THEM funnier' bits.

Sally's Bar and Grill is probably my favorite example of that, but there were many.

Edit...oh yes, and Jeffry. I was glad he got laid eventually, I felt so bad for him after The Girl with Two Breasts and the Man with Two Legs.

Also also, my wife and I found it HILARIOUS that Steve started using Hippo as a nervous expletive after Jeffery explained about 'pulling out in the middle of an H' and have taken to saying "Hippo!" ourselves at random times.

Quote:

Jeff "There's a lot in Hi."
Steve: There are two letters in hi.
"Yeah, and I hit both of them like a crazy fool. It was like a disaster movie, halfway through the H, I'm thinking "no, no pull out now!". Have you ever tried to pull out during an H?
Steve: Jeff the world in all it's fabulous diversity is entirely populated by people who have never tried to 'pull out during an H'
"Do you know why? Cos it isn't a proper letter. It's just a, just a 'huh' noise. Once you've started on the 'huh' you've basically 'huh-ed' so what could I say? Hello? How are you...hippo?"
Patrick: Hippo?
"You can't say hippo. You don't want to come off sounding like some surreal cupboard loitering lunatic."
Steve: It's just so ironic that you should have that as a specific ambition
"So I said 'hi'. Suddenly it was out there, suddenly that little word was hanging in the air pouting"
Steve: Pouting?
"Like a scantily dressed prostitute reclining on a street lamp."

The Sock Gap.

That is all.

I have the first series on DVD. Definitely one of the best things in my DVD collection. The last series (without Jeff) just didn't seem to work. Nowhere near as funny.

This is by far one of my favorite series.

I think that over the last 4 years I have turned on more than a dozen people on to that show.

More mad props to Coupling and booing of the 4th season

Also,

I've got the key to the gates of Paradise, but I've got too many legs!

Coupling (UK) was very witty, intelligent and entertaining. If I catch a re-run and I have the time, I will stop and watch the same episodes countless times. Steve, Susan, Jeff and Jane are some of my favourite characters.

Here is a quote from the ever quirky Jeff:

"You know, when I was a kid, I used to write the word 'naked' hundreds of times on a piece of paper, and then rub my face in it." *cue cheeky grin from Jeff with hand gestures*

Ok, I had to add this clip of Jeff, it's one of my favourites (NSFW!) :p

I'm not sure why most people didn't like the fourth season (sans Jeff). I thought it was well written and good acting. True Oliver is no Jeff, but it still has my favorite episode ever.

Circus of Epidurals.

Patrick, Patrick, Patrick, Patrick.

So this is where you all end up.

I could wax on about Coupling UK, but here is something out of the "Hey thats way too much of a coincidence thing" thing. The log is dated August 29, so it was probably right around when the show premiered or something.

[22:25] <me> okay
[22:25] <me> so i'm flipping through a the tv
[22:25] <me> there is a guy on here who was in the BBC's coupling
[22:25] <me> so. he has an english accent, fine
[22:25] <me> on this swhow, swingtown, he is faking an american accent
[22:25] <me> WEIRD
[22:26] <me> and
[22:26] <me> apparently he is related somehow thorugh marriage or whatever to somone named susan
[22:26] <me> on Coupling, the main storyline was his relationship with someone named Susan
[22:26] <me> AND
[22:26] <me> his name on the show is Bruce.
[22:27] <me> there was an ENTIRE episode (sort of) related to him p[retending to be an australian
[22:27] <me> named bruce
[22:27] <me> who owns the only australian bar in england
[22:27] <me> named Bruce's
[22:27] <me> WEEEIIIRRRDDDD

There was way too much time devoted to Oliver. I didn't care about oliver, he wasn't interesting, and I wanted to see more about the people I cared about...instead they just 'wasted' time on this minor character in several episodes. I think if it went on for another 5 seasons ('series') noone would be complaining but I can't help but think all the oliver screen time could have been put to better use with the core cast.

Nisses 12-12-2008 12:41 AM

little_tippler, you managed to link the most cringe-worthy scene of the whole show (at least to me).

Oh Jeffery!

They wasted time because they tried to make him a new jeff, but it didn't work so had to spend more time establishing him as a new character. Just as it was getting going it was cancelled.

Should have done a movie.

ASU2003 12-13-2008 10:46 AM

It is one of my favorite shows. I highly recommend it.

I wish I could get my SO to sit through a couple episodes. I used to watch it on BBC America, and tried watching it when he was around, but he wasn't interested. I think it's hilariously funny; maybe I'll show him what you males here think and hope he'll give it another try.
