FRINGE

Fringe - Home

Holy cow! The series premiere was intense and well done. I was on the edge of my seat for the most part and the twist was a good one, not one that I expected at all.

Lots of little hidden things to pay attention to, and some good humor at points. I'm looking foward to seeing just what this show develops into.

It's a bit of Lost, X-Files, Alias all tossed together so far.

USA TFP members can watch it online here:

I thought it was pretty decent. Seemed kinda silly for an FBI agent to let a guy from a mental institution give her LSD, hook her up to some machine and throw her in a tank with the expectation that she's going to communicate with someone in a coma though. I mean with just the info she'd gained up to that point, there wasn't a ton of obvious sci-fi shit happening.

Meh, At least she isn't as hard headed as Scully... 100 seasons and she still didn't believe.
We'll see where the season goes, I'm not recording anything else in that time slot so I'll probably catch the whole season.

jewels 09-10-2008 02:27 AM

It was definitely engrossing and enjoyable. I totally look forward to the next episode.

noodle 09-10-2008 03:18 AM

I liked it.
I was expecting House, so I crashed on the couch for a bit and realized that I got a whole 90 minute slot with some minimal commercials.
I can't stand Mark Valley, so I spent most of the time hoping that he'd just DIE, but we'll see if he's finally learned how to act.
The cast seems a little unknown to me other than Joshua Jackson but I hope they can pull it off.

I'm very excited to see this thread. I really enjoyed this pilot. Great quips and one liners - I loved the sarcastic humor, especially from Joshua Jackson. And the cow... I don't know why, but it was highly enjoyable. I'm looking forward to seeing how this show, and these characters, develop throughout the season.

Excellent first episode, lots of great possibilities for this show. I was thinking it would be more like an x-files version of CSI where the FBI girl solves unrelated mysteries each episode and then BAM! they throw the twist at you!

I already hooked up the season pass on the DVR.

japhyryder 09-10-2008 08:23 PM

I agree that it was a good first episode. I just don't know if I can get into it. It is such a mix of Lost and Alias, I don't know if I want to pull my hair out for 4+ years or just wait for the DVD. But it was well done (except for the LSD thing)

THANK YOU!!!!

I thought the first 20 minutes or so were awesome, the plane, the explosion, etc. Then it just kinda put me in my "WTF, I know this is TV/Movie but WTF, make it SOMEWHAT reasonable that this MIGHT happen" (see above) but the twist was pretty cool, I'll set it up to record and see how each episode turns out and go from there. The GF has yet to watch it thought.

Leto 09-11-2008 02:14 AM

it lost me at the scene where she went to the mental institution. Up to then, not bad at all. I understand that I missed some good stuff, but there were chores to be done.

GASP! You don't dig Keen Eddie?

I thought it was pretty good. I especially liked John Noble. Who knew he was funny?

I really only watched because I wanted to see Andrew Kramer's work. He does phenomenal stuff and is an effects genius.

Well, I gotta say, the effects were excellent.

The show? Meh, so far anyways. The lead actress can barely, you know, act. That Dawson's Creek guy is also not such a fine actor. And much of the dialogue was bad in that zone in-between enjoyably campy and downright miserable. There were just waaaaay too many coincidences (main character's lover is also a major part of some as-yet unknown conspiracy, and she happens to be assigned to cover the one case, with the one particular motivation, to uncover said conspiracy? Okay...).

That being said, A) The cow was actually pretty funny, and B) The actor playing the crazy scientist, the one whose name I forget but was in LoTR, is really good.

Also, one thing this show should have made clear is that it exists in a sort of parallel universe to ours, where technology is perhaps a little more advanced. The producers of La Femme Nikita (the TV show, not the movie) described the universe in which the show takes place as like ours, but just different enough to allow them to do some fun stuff. I think Fringe is going in the same direction, but they didn't establish that until the lady took off her fake skin to reveal the cybernetic arm underneath. We'll see though - its only been one (albeit long) episode.

sapiens 09-16-2008 04:01 PM

The first half of the show drove me crazy. I enjoyed it more once I fully suspended disbelief (and once a character played by a certain bad actor got hurt). I did enjoy the actor from The Wire.

I'll watch the second episode.

MontanaXVI 09-17-2008 11:30 AM

Just got done checking out the 2nd episode off the DVR and I think things have slightly improved. I felt myself more into the whole episode this time instead of being into it the first 15-20 and the last 15-20 with mindless filler in the middle.

One thing that is bothering me though, last week Dr. Bishop seemed totally normal and now this week they "regressed" him and made him almost a mad scientist type of character with all his memory problems and scatterbrain antics.

Other than that the season pass on the DVR will stay and I will finish out the season.

Reese 09-17-2008 12:00 PM

I didn't think Dr. Bishop was too different between episodes even though I wouldn't be surprised if after initial reviews of the pilot they added a little more of his illness for comedic effect. It's not uncommon for pilots and the next episode to be different. I've seen actors get replaced and other major elements get changed in the episode after the pilot. I think his memory and other problems were existent in the pilot though. The 2nd episode just focused on his character a little more outside of his solving the problem.

House season premiere was better than 2nd episode of Fringe imo :P

anti fishstick 09-17-2008 12:11 PM

I wonder if this show will last. I enjoy it so far. It is kind of cheesy but that's my style. I was never into the X-Files, but I think I would have enjoyed it.

I don't think there was a lot of character development at least so far into the show. I get more out of Walter's character than any one else.

Derwood 09-20-2008 06:04 AM

I'll continue to watch, but the show needs some fixes. I'm perfectly willing to suspend my disbelief with all of Dr. Bishop's "science", but there are a lot of all-too-easy solutions to problems (mental image camera? sure, we have one of those, and you can just borrow it if you like! Girl in cardiac arrest? Just wrap wire around some metal and juice her back to life! Oh look, she's already awake!). Also, Joshua Jackson is a terrible actor who is further hampered by terrible writing. They need to stop making him be shoddy comic relief and start making him someone who helps solve the mysteries.

fresnelly 09-20-2008 04:02 PM

I'm going to give the show a chance and looking forward to the "Pattern" story arc and am likewise able to suspend my disbelief for the sake of my own enjoyment.

All of these aspects almost make the show a throw back to 80's adventure shows like McGuyver, The A-Team, Rip-Tide, Probe, Misfits of Science and so on. Everything gets tied up neatly and a little hokiness is par for the course. This is the most accessible J.J. Abrahms production to date.

I wonder if he's taken some criticism about Lost's tangled web to heart?

thespian86 09-20-2008 04:33 PM

I actually don't think Joshua Jackson is a terrible actor. I think he is playing a type though, and the type they have him playing is very poorly written.

I've watched both episodes and it's trying very hard to be the x-files meets criminal minds/csi-ish kind of show. Very strange.

yeah he did all the effects and he did the 3d text (places etc) most of it done in AE.. but I digress..

the show is kinda.. well.. boring. The writing isn't great and the acting certainly doesn't cover this up. I feel like I'm watching a really bad Twin Peaks or something.

sapiens 09-24-2008 07:33 AM

It look me awhile to recognize Dr. Bishop as Denethor, the Steward of Gondor, from Return of the King:
http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV...485_SY324_.jpg

alicat 09-26-2008 08:54 PM

I don't recognize any of the actors, but I am liking it so far. I was an adherent fan of X-file's, so it's pretty much a given that I had high hopes for Fringe to give me a fix.

Count me among the numbers that got tired of the convoluted/conspiracy shit in the X-files and are weakening but still fan's of Lost because of the same.

I'm enticed by the "pattern" aspect but not if it becomes completely convoluted. I'd rather each episode is "encapsulated" and the rest is a minor part of the whole. It seems so far that that is what JJ is doing, but there is so much hinting at a "Lost" or "X-files" mythology that I'm a bit off-put.

I'm not a J.J. Abrams fan (because I don't know his work), although I love "Lost", so I can't comment on the aspects from his other shows like "Alias" that element's of "Fringe" might reflect.

Call me weary, or tired, I just want to be entertained and have to think/ponder a little bit on the shows I watch, not devote precious mental energy on my entertainment/down time. My brain is constantly engaged, I want it to be a bit less so when I'm relaxing for cripe's sake!

I'll keep giving Fringe a chance for awhile and see what comes. I'm getting worked up watching the Debates and as I don't foray into Politic's and there's no place for that here, I'll bow out.

P.S. As a parting thought, I really like Dr. Bishop.
