High Fidelity

I don't know if you've seem the film High Fidelity (or indeed read the book), but one sub-plot that crops up regularly in it is the fact that the three main guys who work in a record store - Rob (John Cusack), Dick (Todd Louiso), and Barry (Jack Black) - regularly challenge each other to come up with great playlists for certain situations.

So I'm challenging you:

Great comeback albums.

(It's got to be a great album, by someone who previously produced at least one great record, and was written off into obscurity before coming back with a fabulous album).

My thoughts:

Cash - American Recordings
Aerosmith - Rocks
Fleetwood Mac - Tango In the Night
George Harrison - Cloud 9
Elton John - Songs From The East Coast

Anyone else got any?

If this works, I hope to put up other ideas from time to time...

Two scenes in High Fidelity were filmed in my house. John Cusack was very nice and played catch with my little brother in-between takes. Just thought I'd get that out there.

The Wrens: Meadowlands

After they released Secaucus, they were screwed over by an evil label owner (who later unleashed Creed upon the world). Seven years later, they finally released another album and it happened to be their masterpiece. I freakin' love that album.

The living legend and icon of entertainment for decades managed to create his own requiem with his interpretation of NIN's Hurt. It managed to communicate a brilliant career and a tumultuous life, bringing all the raw power that we've seen in days gone by. I have to admit, before hearing this I thought the Man in Green's career had long been over, replaced by flashier and more shallow acts, but this proved once and for all there will only ever be one Kermit the Frog.

Will - that's not a true comeback - Kermit was never written off!

How could anyone forget his masterful Unpigged set?

Read the book. Didnt like it much, the guy was a bit of a wimp.

As for comeback albums

1 - Nas - Stillmatic
2 - Johnny Cash - American Recordings
3 - Sinatra - Songs for young lovers
4 - Slick Rick - The Art of Storytelling
5 - Portishead - Third

Agreed on Cash, and had forgotten Sinatra.

My list would include:

Cash - American
Pink Floyd - Momentary Lapse
Yes - 90125
Madness - Wonderful
George Harrison - Cloud 9
