Rumor on the interwebs this morning is that Johnny Depp is going to play the Riddler in the next movie and, although less likely given what Nolan has said, that Philip Seymour Hoffman will play Penguin.

As for Hoffman... doesn't he have more dignity? |

I wouldn't mind seeing Depp in the Batman series.

I've been thinking about what I would like to see for the next Batman movie. And pretty much one thing keeps popping into my head. Worlds Finest. I would love to see Nolan handle Superman and Luther. No need for casting. All the major roles are already filled.

Bat/Supes was put on hold indefinitely. It would be totally awesome... but it'd violate the realistic universe Nolan has created.

Hoffman is my favorite actor. Next to him would be Paul Giamatti, Joaquin Phoenix, and Heath Ledger. All amazing method actors. Hoffman is tops though; by far.
And Will, I'm not sure what you mean by lowering himself; he's not some pompous prick. I think he could do to The Penguin (a british arms dealer or a mob boss) what Ledger did to the Joker and bring it some legitimacy. Paul was my first pick for this actually. But Hoffman. Wow. |
I'm saying that the Penguin isn't a good enough character for Hoffman. He, being such an outstanding actor, deserves a better character. He'd be much better off as a Rupert Thorne.

hahaha you were just waiting for me to jump on that.
Forgiven. |
I could really see Black Mask being done. But I have so many ideas about what could be done for the next film, I can't think of which one would be best.
Here's one: Two-Face is alive and thriving. Harvey Dent is dead to the public, but Gordon's department and Batman know he is currently dominating the criminal underworld of Gotham. Batman continues to work in the shadows as a vigilante, though he has lost his connection with Gordon due to the events in the finale of The Dark Knight. Bruce Wayne has some random rich-person event reuniting him with a (forced) childhood friend, Roman Sionis, secretly Black Mask. Black Mask and Two-Face go in league at some point for a yet undetermined reason (possibly they discover the Wayne-Batman connection and each attack a different aspect of the character). While this wouldn't exactly be cannon (at all), I could see it fitting in the Nolanverse. And my second idea: The movie focuses less on Batman himself and more on the events around him. It is mainly told from the perspective of the police (Gordon), the villain(s) (Riddler is the best choice for this telling, IMO), and the people of Gotham. While the police chase Batman, Batman investigates crimes by the Riddler, taking the "clues" from the scene before the police have the chance, and leading to a cat-and-mouse type film. I don't wanna see The Joker come back. He needs to be acknowledged as a character, but I personally don't feel any other actors could do Ledger's Joker justice. |
I think Mr. Freeze would be a bad idea for the next movie.
I would love to see The Riddler. Maybe not as the main villain because he is so much like The Joker, but more of a supporting villain. I think Harley Quin would be awesome. I was hoping she'd make an appearance in TDK. Bane is a wonderful idea, and he definitely has enough presence to be the main villain, if done right. I'd also love to see Two-Face and Scarecrow return. They've always been my two favorite Arkham inmates, and I don't think either of them had a real conclusion. |
